The look: Start menu and apps

Windows 7 holds on to tradition from previous releases, such as Windows XP and Windows 98, and features a familiar, simplistic, and easy-to-understand user interface. Want to find your program? Aside from a fancy Aero Glass look, there are no distractions that get in your way. All the essential information and settings you typically want are right there, front and center.
Along with changing its colors and further customizing Start menu elements, Windows 10 shakes up things and reintroduces a feature from Windows 8 known as Live Tiles. Some Windows 10 apps can install directly as .exe files and download through the Microsoft Store platform. These apps will have Live Tiles on the right side of the Start menu.
By default, some Live Tiles are pinned next to the list of your desktop apps and intend to show you quick information about weather, sports, and more at a glance. Windows 10’s Start menu and Live Tiles are also heavily optimized for newer touchscreen devices, and Microsoft is planning some improvements for the experience.
Like the App Store on your iPhone, you can download Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Netflix, and more to your PC from the Microsoft Store.
These make accessing some of those popular services quicker and easier, and the overall UI is a bit more optimized for newer touchscreen devices. That’s something Windows 7 can’t do at all.
The features: Notifications, search, and Cortana
Also slightly similar to your iPad, Windows 10 has a dedicated notification center known as the Action Center. If you’re on Windows 7, notifications typically appear in the taskbar, but Windows 10 steps that up and puts notifications in one clean and concise environment. The Action Center in Windows 10 will show notifications about important system information and emails. It also has quick toggle switches for screen brightness, sharing files, network settings, and more.
Another significant difference between Windows 7 and Windows 10 is the addition of Cortana. This Windows 10 voice assistant is more or less equal to Apple’s Siri and can assist you in specific tasks like keeping up with sports scores, weather, and sending emails.
Cortana is a big part of the newest version of Windows and comes integrated with several core areas, including the Microsoft Edge web browser, exclusive to Windows 10. That web browser is also more modern than Internet Explorer 11, which was bundled in Windows 7. It comes with support for ad-blocking extensions, continuing web pages from your phone, and more.
As for searching for your files, Microsoft is separating Cortana from search in the current of Windows 10. This makes the search experience in Windows 10 more like Windows 7, but with the bonus of having it search the internet and the web for helpful information, along with your files.

However, unlike Windows 7, which only received one major Service Pack update, Microsoft frequently works on significant updates to Windows 10.

Still, Microsoft is taking steps to kill off compatibility in Windows 7. As an example, Office 2019 software won’t work on Windows 7, nor will Office 2020.
There’s also the hardware element, as Windows 7 runs better on older hardware, which the resource-heavy Windows 10 might struggle with. In fact, it was almost impossible to find a new Windows 7 laptop in 2020.
As for gaming, Microsoft bundles an Xbox app with Windows 10. This allows you to stream content from an Xbox One over to your PC and keep tabs on Xbox Live content. You also can find popular Microsoft games like Forza 7 or State of Decay for download right in the Microsoft Store on Windows 10. Outside of that, Windows 10 supports DirectX 12, which is a technology that helps render video and audio in Windows 10. It is often a requirement for downloading and playing newer titles. However, Nvidia is working to bring real-time ray tracing support to Windows 7 through Direct X 12 for those still holding onto the old OS. So, all hope is not lost.
It’s time to upgrade to Windows 10
Although the free upgrade path to Windows 10 ended a long time ago, it is time to let go of Windows 7 and move to Windows 10.
While Windows 10 isn’t perfect, and many believe it poses privacy concerns for its data collection, it is the more secure OS. Sure, there is the occasional bug, but Microsoft is always patching things quickly and working on updating Windows 10.
There are plenty of reasons for Windows 7 to hold a soft spot in our hearts, but in a world where malware and viruses are always attacking computers, going with the safer and more secure version of Windows is the better bet now rather than later. It’s also worth switching to avoid paying the charge Microsoft will start applying, if for no other reason. Besides, there are always ways to make Windows 10 feel like the old system you love.

Das Windows-7-Startmenü ist klassisch und recht schlank gehalten.
Rechts könnt ihr auf wichtige Systemfunktionen wie die Systemsteuerung, den Arbeitsplatz (Computer) oder eure eigenen Dateien zugreifen.
In Windows 10 sind Power-Button und Einstellungen links durch kleine Symbole dargestellt. Neben der scrollbaren Programm- und App-Liste seht ihr rechts ans Startmenü angepinnte Apps in Form von (animierten) Kacheln. Dadurch ist das Windows-10-Startmenü grundsätzlich etwas breiter. Man kann es aber auch ohne Kacheln nutzen oder nur die Kachelanimationen (Live Tiles) deaktivieren.
Wer das alte Startmenü aus Windows 7 weiter nutzen möchte, installiert sich beispielsweise Classic Shell. Hier seht ihr, wie das Ganze dann aussieht:
Beide Startmenüs lassen sich öffnen und durchsuchen, indem man danach die Suchbegriffe einfach per Tastatur eingibt. Meistverwendete Programme (oder Apps) zeigen beide Startmenüs an. Auch in Windows 7 konnte man bereits bestimmte Programme an das Startmenü fest anpinnen.

In beiden Betriebssystemen ist der Windows-Explorer der Datei-Manager.
In Windows 7 sind alle Festplatten und Partitionen übersichtlich unter dem Arbeitsplatz (Computer) angeordnet.
In Windows 10 kann der Windows-Explorer unübersichtlich und überfüllt wirken, da Ordner der eigenen Dateien Sowohl rechts im Hauptfenster wie auch links unter dem Arbeitsplatz (Dieser PC) angezeigt werden. Zudem finden sich viele Elemente auch im Schnellzugriff darüber wieder, wodurch wir kein einheitliches System erkennen konnten.
Die Einstellungen – langweiliger in Windows 10
In Windows 7 gab es die Systemsteuerung, um die wichtigsten Funktionen zu konfigurieren. In Windows 10 gibt es die alte Systemsteuerung mittlerweile nur noch abgespeckt. Viele Funktionen findet ihr nun in den „Einstellungen“.

Während die neuen Einstellungen aus Windows 10 insbesondere auch für Touchscreens und Mobilgeräte entwickelt wurde, ist die alte Systemsteuerung für Desktop-Nutzer vor allem durch die farbenfrohen Symbole weitaus besser navigierbar.
Allein aus Erfahrung wissen die meisten, wo sie dort wie, was finden.
Die neuen Funktionen – Windows 10 lässt eine Menge weg
Die wichtigsten Funktionen entnehmt ihr der oberen Tabelle. Hier gehen wir auf die wichtigsten – oder besser – fehlenden Funktionen ein: Wer auf Windows 10 (kostenlos) upgradet, verliert in der Regel die Minianwendungen aus Windows 7, Drittanbieter-Virenscanner, Standard-Windows-Spiele und das Windows Media Center, sofern installiert.
Virenscanner von Drittanbietern lassen sich einfach neu installieren, allerdings braucht ihr die vermutlich gar nicht.
Telemetrie – beide Betriebssysteme sammeln eure Nutzerdaten
Windows 10 ist eng mit dem Sammeln von Nutzerdaten verzahnt, was man sehr gut in den Datenschutz-Einstellungen sehen kann. Allerdings hat Microsoft viele der Telemetrie-Funktionen per Updates auch in Windows 7 und 8 nachinstalliert.

- In Windows 10 lässt sich die Datensammelei allerdings nicht vollständig ausschalten.

Updates – nervtötend in Windows 10
Eigentlich sollten Updates so wie in Windows 7 ablaufen: Update wird im Hintergrund heruntergeladen und nach Abfrage installiert – falls nötig, beim nächsten Herunterfahren.
So läuft es in der Regel in Windows 10 ab: Riesiges Update wird heruntergeladen, belegt Speicherplatz und fast die gesamte Internetbandbreite. Dann wird das Update vorbereitet. Dann wird das Update installiert. Dann wird der Rechner neu gestartet und das Update mit insgesamt 1 bis 2 Stunden weiter (?) installiert.
Zwangs-Updates: Windows 10 installiert Updates automatisch, ob ihr wollt oder nicht.
In früheren Windows-10-Versionen hat das Betriebssystem den Rechner ohne Rücksicht einfach neu gestartet, egal ob man gerade gearbeitet und etwa ein langes Video gerendert hat – ein Szenario, das nicht unterbrochen werden sollte. Mittlerweile kann man eine Nutzungszeit in Windows 10 einstellen, in denen man nicht durch Updates unterbrochen wird. Dennoch gibt es nach kleinen oder großen Updates oft Probleme und bestimmte Funktionen gehen nicht mehr:

Nach dem Oktober-2018-Update funktionierte bei vielen der Sound nicht mehr, Windows 10 hat eigene Dateien gelöscht, dann wurden die Standard-Programm-Verknüpfungen zerschossen, Programme haben sich nicht mehr mit dem Internet verbunden – nur, um mal ein paar Probleme zu nennen.
Das Schlimmste daran ist aber, dass sich die Updates in Windows 10 nicht deaktivieren lassen. Das heißt also zwangsläufig: Ihr braucht gute Backups. Das gilt seit Windows 10 mehr denn je.
Werbung im Betriebssystem – Windows 10 setzt neue Maßstäbe
Im Gegensatz zu älteren Microsoft-Betriebssystemen wird in Windows 10 hin und wieder Werbung geschaltet: Apps installieren sich ungefragt im Startmenü, aber auch ganz gewöhnliche Werbung wird mitunter auf Sperrbildschirm, im Windows-Explorer oder in den Einstellungen angezeigt – Tendenz steigend.
Wir selbst meinen, dass ein Betriebssystem selbst neutral, und damit werbefrei, sein sollte. Meistens lässt sich die Windows-10-Werbung zwar deaktivieren, das ist aber nicht immer von Dauer.
Fazit: Ist Windows 10 oder Windows 7 besser? Upgrade oder lieber nicht?
Pragmatiker, Gewohnheitsmenschen und Nostalgiker werden solange bei Windows 7 bleiben, bis der Support ausläuft. – und es vermutlich sogar noch weit danach nutzen. Und wenn sie irgendwann upgraden wollen, werden viele es sich ganz genau überlegen, nicht vielleicht doch auf Linux oder eine andere Alternative zu wechseln. Auch Microsofts Versuche, Windows 7 schlecht zu reden, werden das nicht ändern:

Wer allerdings lieber die neuen Funktionen von Windows 10 sowie die moderne Optik mag, kann sich mit dem Betriebssystem anfreunden. Allerdings muss hin und wieder Handarbeit angelegt werden, wenn ein Update mal wieder eine Funktion zerstört hat oder das Betriebssystem etwas außerhalb der Kontrolle des Nutzers ändert. Ich selbst bin vor knapp 2 Jahren auf Linux Mint umgestiegen und wünsche mir heute, ich hätte es schon früher getan.

My 5 reasons why Windows 10 is so much worse than Windows 7

It just so happens that I use both Windows 7 and Windows 10 at the same time. «Ten» is installed on my home gaming computer, and «seven» — on my work. In the spring, at the height of the pandemic, I had to work from home for several months. And during this time, I almost hated Windows 10. Now I will explain why.
Response time
Previously, Windows 10 was just a kind of «launcher» for me — on my home computer, I only started games and watched movies. With the interface of the Windows itself, the interaction was minimal. Actually, I upgraded a few years ago only because current games stopped supporting Windows 7 and began to require DirectX 12. Response time is really longer — old Windows 7 works faster on a weaker working computer! Both there and there are SATA SSDs installed. I think this is due to the fact that the latest «Windows» constantly sends something to the Microsoft servers, and is also overloaded with unnecessary resources that cannot be disabled. But the main problem is that on modern systems it is almost impossible to install «seven»! We ran into this at work while building a PC for a new employee on a Ryzen 3 2200G . Interface
Combined desktop and tablet interface — Microsoft’s worst solution in years. This started to piss me off even in Windows 8, which I demolished almost immediately after installation. For example, when installing drivers on a Realtek sound card, the old sound settings program is no longer available — if you please, download the crooked tablet version from the store.
The same goes for games — for example, Forza Horizon 4 is not playable except by purchasing it from the Microsoft tablet store.
Plus, I just like the transparent windows of the seventh «Windows» much more than the modern flat design, which has become a trend and has penetrated almost everywhere: from Android and iPhone, and ending with the modernization of some sites. But this is already a matter of taste, you can argue with me.

You need to install tweakers, dig into the registry, block servers and do other nonsense. And even after doing all these actions, you still can’t cut out the updates to the end. I will give an example from personal experience. We have a projector in our meeting room at work, connected to a mini-PC the size of a flash drive, something like this:

It is clear that they attached this new tablet interface with the rear left heel. Part of the graphics has been preserved since the days of Windows 98, and part is new, which looks very clumsy:
Why can’t you disable these tiles and tablet applications on a regular desktop? Again, it would be enough to make one button in the settings.
