Top games for ps4: 25 Best PS4 Games to Play Right Now

The Best PS4 Games of All Time

The PlayStation 4 is a fine games console, make no mistake. And the 4K-ready PS4 Pro is an even punchier version still, even if the PS5 has now been on the scene for quite a while.

However, it’s the incredible games that made the PS4 the winner of its console generation. That’s why we’ve put together a list of the greatest PS4 games of all time — dating back to the Sony console’s launch in 2013. All of them are well worth of adding to your library.

If you’re looking for a particular genre, you can find some more specific guides, right here.

Our PS4 game buyer’s guides

• Best role-playing games (RPGs)

The Last of Us Part II

Simply stunning storytelling

10 / 10

The pinnacle of cinematic storytelling in games — an absolute must-play for PlayStation owners.

SQUIRREL_166762

For

  • Amazing, gutting story
  • Cinematic visuals
  • Great stealth action

Against

  • Pretty grim to play

Naughty Dog returns to its harrowing vision of a post-pandemic world, and picks up the story of Joel and Ellie. This time players will mostly be in Ellie’s shoes, as she treads a path that few would be able to stomach, in search of justice. It’s an absolutely gut-wrenching journey and arguably a new highpoint for cinematic storytelling in games. A must-play for any PlayStation owner.

CD Projekt RED / The Witcher III: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Possibly the best RPG ever

10.0 / 10

No matter which console you play it on, this is one of the best games of all time.

For

  • Engaging story
  • Labyrinthine quests
  • Looks and sounds superb

Against

  • A lot to get your head around
  • Too much to do for some people’s tastes

Not just one of the best games on the PlayStation 4, The Witcher 3 can lay claim as being one of the best of all time. It is an extraordinary feat in game design, where it seems that every action undertaken in the massive third-person RPG has an effect on the game world.

Save a merchant from some bandits in a random encounter, for example, you might meet him again many hours later in a city, where he gives you a massive discount on items he has for sale. The world itself also seems alive and vibrant while the game is also capable of testing your skills so you don’t just blitz through it. Superb.

God of War

Sheer brilliance

10.0 / 10

Compelling storytelling meets excellent game mechanics in this classic PlayStation title.

SQUIRREL_143881

For

  • Beautiful world
  • Amazing no-cuts action
  • Incredible performances

Against

  • Can be challenging early on

God of War is, quite simply, stunning. Its over-the-shoulder third-person style works well for both emotive storytelling and the intuitive combat system.

We particularly like the axe-throwing mechanics and, specifically, the weight of the axe itself as it travels back to your hand Thor’s hammer style. No PS4 should be without easily the best God of War game and one of the best PlayStation games full stop.

From Software

  • So free-form

Against

  • Hard as nails

FromSoftware’s stunning gaming formula comes to a truly open world for the first time, letting you roam around at your own pace, discovering new areas and enemies and growing your power steadily through its unforgiving but highly rewarding combat. This is a new masterpiece of the genre.

Rockstar

Red Dead Redemption 2

An amazing tale

10. 0 / 10

Incredible depth and attention to detail are present in this sequel.

SQUIRREL_147087

For

  • The best Western game ever
  • Looks amazing
  • Affecting, epic story

Against

  • Everything takes a long time to do
  • Overly complex controls

A truly stunning game that provides entertainment and enjoyment for weeks. It starts slow but the amount of depth and variety in mission types will soon have you well and truly hooked.

Rockstar isn’t the most prolific of developers but it is certainly one of the very best. There are few open-world games around with as much thought and attention afforded it.

Sony Computer Interactive Entertainment

Marvel’s Spider-Man

Be a superhero

9.0 / 10

The magic of Spider-Man is captured perfectly in this edition — a must-play for fans of the comic book.

SQUIRREL_145601

For

  • Amazing web-slinging
  • Great comic-book story
  • Looks beautiful

Against

  • Objectives get a little samey

It is hard to describe just how enjoyable swinging around the streets in Spider-Man actually is, you will find yourself doing that for hours without even needing to complete a mission.

But thankfully there is a great story and game in the open world superhero title too. Comic book fans will also thoroughly appreciate the amount of collectables and costumes that can be unlocked. And there are some great character cameos along the way too.

Sony/Naughty Dog

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Rip-roaring fun

10.0 / 10

A mature instalment in the series — one that’s perhaps the best action-adventure game on the console.

See at Amazon (GB)

SQUIRREL_137518

For

  • Fun, zippy story
  • Amazing visuals
  • Rip-roaring gameplay

Against

  • At a certain point, it ends

Uncharted 4 isn’t just the result of Naughty Dog’s learnings throughout the previous trilogy, it also benefits greatly from the developer’s work on The Last of Us.

While radically different in tone, A Thief’s End undoubtedly borrows some elements from its enduring horror-based stablemate, resulting in the studio’s most rounded, balanced game yet.

Square Enix

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Superb remake

10.0 / 10

An excellent remake that makes the PSOne classic feel like an entirely new game.

See at Amazon (GB) See at Amazon (US) See at Amazon (CA)

SQUIRREL_178013

For

  • A legendary story
  • Loveable characters
  • Modernised combat

Against

  • Awkward moments

It may be a more recent addition to the list, but Final Fantasy VII Remake would easily slot into any best PS4 games line-up, even if it was just a top five. The PS4 exclusive is much more than a remaster of the classic PSOne JRPG, it’s almost a new game, having been rebuilt from the ground up, with amazing new graphics and combat system that hold it in good stead with most other games released this generation.

Sony Computer Entertainment / From Software / Japan Studio

Bloodborne

Hard as nails

9.0 / 10

A top RPG and PlayStation exclusive — perfect for those who like a challenge.

See at Amazon (GB)

SQUIRREL_133366

For

  • Unbelievable tone
  • Looks great
  • An enormously rewarding combat system

Against

  • Can get frustrating
  • The story is confusing to non-enthusiasts

A PS4 exclusive at launch, Bloodborne is from the same stable as Dark Souls and you can tell almost instantly. It matches its stablemate series graphically, albeit with current generation flair, but the main similarity is that both action-adventure/RPGs are as difficult as each other. Prepare to throw your DualShock 4 around. A lot.

Remedy

Control

Supernatural action

8.0 / 10

A surprise hit that provides you with a well-balanced adventure.

SQUIRREL_5823357

For

  • Unnerving story
  • Beautiful visuals
  • Fun action gameplay

Against

  • Takes a little while to unleash your powers

One of the best, most unexpected hits of 2019, Control is a paranormal adventure/shooter from the team behind Alan Wake and has similarly become a cult classic.

Its art style — full of pastel shades and a purposely grainy overlay — matches the theme well, with an almost dream-like ambience. And, the gameplay mechanics that introduce new weapons and powers as you progress are so finely tuned that you never feel overwhelmed by the increasing difficulty. Superb.

There are so many games available for the PS4 that trying to browse them all would be a fool’s errand, so we’ve got some questions for you to think about as you consider — these could help you narrow things down.

Do you want a multiplayer game?

A huge variable for many players is whether they can pick up a title and play it with (or against) their friends, or if they’re locked into a singleplayer system — if you know that you like playing online, whether with mates or strangers, be sure to check if your game of choice allows for this!

Is it all about the story?

Some games lean heavily on their gameplay systems to offer a rewarding arc for you as you learn more about how to excel. Others concentrate on telling a good story first and foremost, enveloping you in a yarn. Of course, many of the best can do both, but we think it’s worth considering which you’re more interested in as you think about potential titles.

How difficult do you like your games?

Are you a fan of taking your time to get better at a game slowly but surely, with progress only as a reward for those who’ve put in the hard miles? If so there are plenty of difficult games on this list for you, in particular the likes of Bloodborne. If not, though, maybe check out our reviews to see which ones are more suited to casual players.

Top 25 open world games for PS4 and PS5 in 2021

What are the best open world games for PS4 and PS5? Now many good games in the sandbox genre have been developed for this console. As it turns out, open-world games have gained a lot of attention over the last few years, and since then they’ve been expanding, growing, with more powerful PCs and consoles. nine0059

This list focuses on the open world issues of each game: how seamless it is, how comfortable it is to play, and what emotions it evokes.

Here are the best PS4 open world games you can download on PS5 that are relevant in 2021:

    25. Far Cry 5

    • Year of manufacture: 2018

There were fears that this Far Cry series would be similar to the rest, but fortunately the creators have remade it enough, making Far Cry 5 a rather deep tour of the open world. The place of events is the most successful part of this game. This is a fictional county in Montana that has been destroyed by a religious cult. The game is built on an adventure without a mini-map to guide you. The open world map is also large, varied and full of criminals to defeat in gunfights. nine0059

    24. inFAMOUS: Second Son

    • Published by: Sony Computer Entertainment / Designed by: Sucker Punch Productions
    • Year of publication: 2014

Seattle is known as the birthplace of grunge, but in the brilliant plot of «inFAMOUS: Second Son» there is no such filth in the city — except for what should be there. The city map is less impressive compared to other available locations on the console. But she is good in that she serves as a source for the powers of the protagonist Delsin Row, which are developed by absorbing the powers of other heroes. nine0059

    23. NieR Automata

    • Published by: Square Enix
    • Year of publication: 2017

Everyone always notices the hidden meaning in the design of the game NieR Automata, and this also applies to the open world. It can be an intergalactic station that serves as the base center for 2B and 9S, or an unneeded park, in which a couple of cars are sometimes present. A notable role in the formation of the plot is played by the further actions of the player of the role-playing version. It may not be the heaviest game on the console, but its art and compelling story tops a lot. nine0059

    Mafia III

  • Publication year: 2016
  • Mafia III is certainly not the most unique game on this list, but if you turn a blind eye to the replay of missions in the tale of Lincoln Clay’s payback, you’ll love something. The game has a very diverse atmosphere, an exciting story. And the spirit of the 60s at the highest level really confirms the name. This is one of those games where simply moving around the locations is pure satisfaction. nine0059

    21. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

    • Published: Ubisoft / Developed: Ubisoft Montreal
    • Publication year: 2013

Half of the world in this game is the ocean. Taking to the open ocean as the captain of a pirate ship, players are allowed to plunder anyone they meet in the Caribbean, filling its waters with the bloodstains of enemies. You can also see the built port cities, if you suddenly get seasick. But as practice says, there is nothing special to do on land in this game. nine0059

    20. Dying Light

    • Published by: Warner Bros / Designed by: Techland
    • Year of publication: 2015

If you’re bored with formulaic stories, Dying Light is a great option if you’re looking for an open-world horror game. While the city of Harran is infested with zombies, it’s up to you and your first-person parkour skills to save the day. The game does a really good job of making everything about it look pretty claustrophobic while still providing a lot of leeway. The cool thing is that you have the opportunity to admire the game with a friend, even with three. Surviving together in a group of free runners with a baseball bat is fantastic fun. nine0059

    19. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands

    • Posted by: Sony Interactive Entertainment
    • Publication date: 2019

Afterlife is a pretty big game. Sony Bend’s return to console development may not bring many original ideas to the open world genre, but its nascent gameplay and mammoth technical advances will see you face some serious challenges in one of PS4 and PS5’s most luxurious sandboxes. With a vast apocalyptic backdrop that constantly haunts you, this exclusive emphasis on survival gives it something incredible that has made it a true fan favorite. nine0059

    17. Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain

    • Published by: Konami / Developed by: Kojima Productions
    • Year of publication: 2015

This game is remembered for the freedom of the players — the freedom that comes with the game’s open world structure. You can complete Big Boss missions however you want, and the wide-open maps give you reason to think carefully about your approach. And when things don’t quite go according to plan, the open world can turn into a gorgeous, chaotic sandbox. On top of that, the game boasts of the awesome graphics quality. nine0059

    16. The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

    • Published by: Bethesda Softworks / Developed by: Zenimax Online Studios
    • Year of publication: 2015

The world of this game is quite large — and even this word does not adequately describe the size of this multiplayer game. It’s quite possible that Tamriel is the largest and most open to explore map of any PS4 game. Here you will find endless adventures. Filled with quests, dungeons and all, it’s not the prettiest open world in Sony’s system, but it’s certainly one of the most time-consuming. nine0059

    15. Watch Dogs 2

    • Published: Ubisoft / Developed: Ubisoft Montreal
    • Year of publication: 2016

If the bleak depiction of Chicago in the original Watchdogs was a wonderful but unmemorable backdrop for Aiden Pearce’s poignant adventure, sunny San Francisco is the complete opposite. Like Los Santos, people live in the Golden City, and you can’t drive a single street without noticing something to capture. The picturesque spirit of the cityscape perfectly captures the inspiring fantasy about people who fight for their will. The developer’s sense of humor is what comes out the most, as it makes fun of virtually everyone in Frisco. nine0059

    14. Final Fantasy XV

    • Published by: Capcom / Developed by: Capcom
    • Publication year: 2017

    Grancis is a sinister place.
