How to upgrade PS4 games like Cyberpunk 2077 to PS5 versions for free — Global IT
Alexey Kaloshin

You can play most PS4 games on PS5 thanks to Sony’s next generation console’s excellent backwards compatibility feature. But some publishers are going even further with the next generation console, allowing you to upgrade PS4 games to PS5 versions for free. This allows you to play in dynamic 4K resolution at 60fps and provides shorter loading times, resulting in a smoother gaming experience with less waiting.
The most recent major game to receive an update is Cyberpunk 2077, which caused controversy when it was released in 2020 due to serious performance issues. Developer CD Projekt Red released patch 1.5 on February 15, adding a bunch of new features and bringing the game to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Unfortunately, your save won’t transfer from PS4 to PS5, so you’ll have to start over (Xbox will keep the transfer).
Transition to the next generation
PS5 has been in and out of stores since its launch in 2020. The digital model is $400 and the disc drive is $500.
Your game updates won’t happen automatically or through a typical game update, so it’s easy to accidentally keep playing the PS4 version of the game on your new PS5. You must go to the game’s page on PlayStation Network and choose to upgrade to the PS5 version. This will download additional data required for next generation features.
If you have a PS5, make sure you play the best version of your games.
You can also upgrade to PS5 versions if you have a physical PS4 game if you bought a PS5 with a disc drive. You will always need to use a PS4 disc to play the PS5 version; the update does not give you a free digital copy of the game. You’ll still download the PS5 update from PSN, but you won’t need the PS5 disc — your PS4 will become the authenticator.
If you’ve only opted for a digital PS5 and you have the disc, you’re out of luck. There are a few more restrictions and caveats:
- Some PS5 versions of current PS4 games are not yet released.
- Next generation versions will be large files, so they will take up more precious memory on the console’s SSD.
- You will receive a fresh list of trophies (the list of each version is separate).
- Some game saves won’t transfer, and some require you to manually load your save from the PS4 version before you can access it on PS5.
- Some game updates are only available in cross-gen packs or special editions.
First Party Policy Change
Sony initially stated that the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West exclusive would not allow you to upgrade from the PS4 to the PS5 version for free unless you purchased the more expensive Digital Deluxe, Collector’s or Regalla edition. He later reversed course, saying that anyone who bought the PS4 version would be eligible for a free PS5 upgrade.
However, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan also confirmed that it will cost a lot to update future games in the first batch.
«Moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (recently released on PS4 and PS5) — both digital and physical» — will offer a $10 digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5,» he wrote in a blog post. «This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, as well as any other PS4 and PS5 exclusive title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.»
