Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales test — DLSS 3, FSR 2.

1 and XeSS on different graphics cards

A new game Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales set in the Spiderman universe has been available for Windows since yesterday. Among other things, it supports reflections and shadows via ray tracing with various options. DLSS 3, DLSS 2, DLAA, FSR 2.1 and XeSS are also supported. That is, all three scaling technologies from three GPU manufacturers (NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel). We evaluated the performance of the game and the operation of scaling technologies. nine0004

In addition to more complex tracing effects and better scaling technologies compared to console versions, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PC also supports 16:9, 16:10, 21:9, 32:9 and 48 aspect ratios :nine. The 48:9 format and resolution is compatible with NVIDIA Surround or AMD Eyefinity configurations on three monitors.

We covered all the details of DLSS 3 and the new feature called Frame Generation in the GeForce RTX 4090 review. Frame Generation technology creates full frames through the Optical Multi Frame Generation process. But this requires hardware acceleration, namely Tensor cores and Optical Flow accelerators as part of RT cores, which are only available on Ada Lovelace GPUs in the GeForce RTX 40 line. FSR 2.1 and XeSS are alternative scaling technologies from AMD and Intel. FSR does not rely on artificial intelligence when scaling. We covered all the details of FSR 2.x in a separate article. XeSS, on the other hand, uses artificial intelligence. We have published a separate review with XeSS details. nine0005

AMD and Intel designed FSR and XeSS to be supported by all modern graphics cards. In the case of DLSS, the situation is different, the technology only works on GeForce video cards. And Frame Generation is available only on GeForce RTX 40 video cards.

The PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales was ported by Nixxes Software. Here we will not discuss the story and gameplay, but will focus on technology.

GeForce RTX 4080 benchmarks

Before we get into the benchmarks, a few words about the configuration. We used our graphics card test system, which consists of an Intel Core i9-12900K processor on an ASUS TUF Gaming Z690-Plus motherboard, G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB 2x 16 GB DDR5-5600, CL36-36-36-76 memory. We have installed driver version GeForce 526.98. We tested the game on GeForce RTX 4080 and GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition.

When evaluating charts, there are a few things to keep in mind regarding decoded captions:

  • Without any additives: no ray tracing or upscaling technologies
  • RT: ray tracing effects included
  • Quality level: The quality level used is given for each upscaling technology (balance, performance, etc.). nine0154

Let’s start with DLSS 3 at different quality levels.

Frame Generation creates every second frame, it only works on GeForce RTX 40 graphics cards. Let’s see how Frame Generation performs with DLSS 3.

Now let’s evaluate the different quality levels of FSR 2.1.

Finally, let’s move on to XeSS, and the Ultra Quality mode is only available with this scaling technology.

GeForce RTX 4090 — Benchmarks

We ran the tests on the GeForce RTX 4090 as well, here we chose DLSS 3 combined with Frame Generation. The results are as follows.

Ray tracing effects

Here we decided to compare rendering quality without ray tracing effects and with them.

At this stage, a comparison of photos is attached, you can find it in the full version of the article on our website.

Below are three galleries where we have added screenshots with different quality levels of scaling technologies.

NVIDIA DLSS 3: native, quality, balance, performance, ultra performance

AMD FSR 2.1: native, quality, balance, performance, ultra performance

Intel XeSS: native, ultra quality, quality, balance, performance

To you could compare the screenshots more closely, they can be downloaded in their native resolution without compression. nine0005

Video Comparison

We also showed ray tracing effects on several scenes in motion.

Conclusion

Do ray tracing effects really add realism or are they a waste of resources? Here everyone decides for himself. In Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, reflections add realism as the streets of New York City are full of reflective surfaces such as windows, car windows, and more. In our opinion, all these reflections really improve the immersion in the game. As for the calculation of shadows through ray tracing, the effect is not so pronounced, so you can put a question mark here. nine0005

Turning all effects on results in a 40% fps drop on GeForce RTX 4080. Same result on GeForce RTX 4090. Fortunately, there are several ways to increase framerate. The first is Frame Generation technology. Then you can set the DLSS mode, through which fps can be raised to the required level. For example, up to 120 or 144 fps, which goes well with 120/144 Hz monitors.

FSR 2. 1 and XeSS provide the same capability, and GeForce RTX 40 graphics cards can combine Frame Generation with alternative scaling technologies. When it comes to comparing the quality of DLSS, FSR 2.1 or XeSS, much depends on personal perception. We still believe that DLSS is better than FSR 2.1 in terms of picture quality (both in quality mode) and is about on par with XeSS (in ultra quality mode). nine0005

DLSS 3 and Frame Generation are only available to owners of GeForce RTX 4080 and GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards. Frame Generation technology is not available for GeForce RTX 30 and GeForce RTX 20 graphics cards, but DLSS 2 can be enabled. FSR 2.1 and XeSS will work on any modern graphics cards. For Intel Arc A Series graphics cards, we recommend using XeSS. It also makes sense for owners of Radeon graphics cards to switch to XeSS instead of FSR, since Intel technology shows itself, in general, better.

Free fall

All players of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2018, as well as SM:MM, know this feeling when the hero jumps from the peak of the Empire State Building, picks up tremendous speed in free fall and soars into the air with a graceful movement just before a hard fall to the asphalt.

And if the original Spider-Man could only give the emotion of falling and taking off, then his protégé can boast of virtuosity in the very process of striving down. nine0005

So, Miles can perform tricks not only while flying on the web, but also in the process of free fall. To do this, you need:

  • By pressing L3 , switch to the «free fall» mode;
  • Hold symbol ◻ on the gamepad;
  • Reject left stick in any of 4 directions (up, down, left or right).

In addition, Miles has two sets of tricks, depending on whether he jumps backwards or backwards. nine0005

You can sunbathe

or read the comments on DTF

This feature is quite useful for those who like to take screenshots.

Bioflight

In the process of learning to use his bioelectric powers, the game prompts the player that by pressing X, while holding L1 (with the accumulated cell of biopower), the hero will be able to additionally soar upwards during the flight.
