Returning to Aventasia was a delight. I revisited all the sights I loved and caught up with the good folk who made my last foray into their lands such a joy. The fact everything looks exactly like it did all those years ago was a comfort, but I couldn’t help but think they really should have given the place a bit of a spruce up after all this time.

The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 becomes the perfect temporary title for those looking for games with different experiences. An indispensable offer for fans of Point & Click classic games like Grim Fandango or Monkey Island.

The Book of Unwritten Tales II feels like a game from another time and place, with some dated humor and needlessly frustrating gameplay moments, but there is an endearing charm to the story and some smart (if occasionally illogical) puzzles to solve. If you are hungry for a return to the days of games like The Secret of Monkey Island and Simon the Sorcerer, then you can’t go wrong with The Book of Unwritten Tales II.

The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 deserves a lot of praise for its top notch humour coupled with references to fairy tales and contemporary pop culture, as well as for its defying (and frustrating) puzzles, well-written plot and art style. The game would rank even higher if it featured touch screen controls, a flaw that clearly stands out in a point and click game, and if its selling price was closer to versions of the same game in other platforms. Despite these factors, this is easily one of the most fun games that the Nintendo eShop catalogue has to offer.

The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 Review
Aaron Potter
King Art Games is an old-school adventure game developer whose latest entry into its acclaimed The Book of Unwritten Tales comedy point-and-click series – The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 – has now come to Switch.
This new instalment sees you switch back and forth between the four returning heroes – Wilbur, Ivo, Nate and Critter – as they journey to resolve the mystery of why elements of the land keep shapeshifting. An adventure of 20-or-so hours of gameplay, how does this second trip to the land of Aventasia hold up at home and on the go? Exceptionally well, as it happens.
Elven princess Ivo longs for a life of adventure.
An entirely standalone adventure, The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 takes place soon after the evil witch Mortroga’s defeat. If you’ve not played the first instalment, don’t worry – there’s a spiffy (and appropriately witty) prologue that does a great job at getting you up to speed, with any additional necessary context being provided naturally in early character conversations.
The unique personalities of each character shine through thanks to some top-notch voice acting, with Ivo, the distant elven princess wanting a life outside of her castle, is a particular highlight. All four characters do well pull you into this epic tale of wizards and gnomes in a way that’s rib-tickling, yet believable; I lost count of how many times simple British-isms like “cor, blimey!” made certain scenarios more chuckle-worthy.
Wilbur’s wizard training hasn’t progressed too much since his last adventure.
When it comes to the logic puzzles themselves, The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 doesn’t do anything too drastic. Each scenario involves a problem to be overcome, and this is usually done by choosing the correct dialogue options, or connecting objects together. This style of sleuthing is a good reminder of how obtuse certain scenarios used to be in old adventure games, while here, I was never left scratching my chin for too long.
Popular fantasy franchises like Lord of The Rings and Game of Thrones are all lovingly poked fun at, with much of the game’s humour being derived from lampooning familiar scenes and concepts. Even the character designs and environments help reinforce this eccentric style, with the bright colours really popping on the Nintendo Switch’s screen.
Every location is incredibly whimsical and detailed.
Regrettably, there’s nothing unique to this version that will tempt anyone who’s played it before to double-dip, other than the slight visual flourish. Though, by playing it portably, I did come to appreciate The Book of Unwritten Tales 2’s strong attention to detail in this regard.
The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 might be a classic-style adventure game with a 21st century coat of paint, but it’s elevated in how it sets out to regale you with a funny fantasy tale and absolutely nails it. It’s a shame that Switch players currently can’t jump into the original game, but having such a witty adventure on the go makes this a welcome addition to the catalogue.

Book of unwritten stories 2 | The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 (Rus)
Almost five years after the publication of the very first part of the wonderful quest «The Book of Unwritten Stories», where the brave four saved the fabulous country of Aventasia from the cunning sorcerer Munkus and his sinister mother Motroga, and also after the Miracle left his tribe, for the sake of rescue Captain Nate, we again got the opportunity to go on a new journey with our favorite characters. The name of the quest has the number «2», but in fact this is the third release of the game, including the original prequel to the main part — «Chronicles of the Beast». There is no doubt that a new threat looming over the world will bring all the characters together, but so far the paths of our heroes have diverged in opposite directions. nine0003
The beautiful elf Ivo still fell in love with the absolutely reckless captain Nate, but something didn’t work out in terms of a stable relationship, and the frustrated Ivodora Eleonora Clarisse returned to her native forest kingdom, where her mother decided to cure her daughter’s blues with a favorite for everyone mothers way — urgently marry her! Nate himself consoled himself in a way that was very familiar to a man of his character — he spent all the prize money in stormy revelry and quickly remained aground, decided to get involved in another risky venture, which did not take long to turn into a very dangerous adventure in the same place that he had already many times it was overhauled! At this time, Ivo stubbornly refuses all well-born suitors who claim her hand, heart, and along the way, the entire forest kingdom! Her majestic mother, indignant at the behavior of her obstinate daughter, puts her under house arrest, and sooner or later, the elf will still have to marry! And not only because of the increased influx of suitors, but also due to the unexpected circumstance that Ivo is mysteriously pregnant! And since the sexy elf is completely ignorant of lamorous matters, she can only guess — how did an unknown illness fall on her in the form of a slight fullness in the waist! ?? And while hypotheses about the intervention of the «holy spirit» in its current interesting situation are multiplying, the dwarf Wilbur is strenuously directing the Academy of Magic, where he became not only a venerable professor, but also managed to quarrel with the rector of this reputable scientific institution for the mass production of young personnel. branches of sorcery and wizardry! nine0003
P.S: The controls in the game are almost the same as in the first releases, but the inventory is now located in a special backpack in the lower right corner of the screen. The «space» key will point to all active points on the location, and double-clicking the LMB will speed up the transition to another location. Users with older video cards should set the graphics quality to «low» in the settings. But this «low» will be very high and very bright! It should be noted that the quest has become even more colorful, and the passage itself is much easier — there is almost no brainwashing on tasks and killer puzzles have gone aside! However, there remains the need to repeatedly inspect items using RMB, because some actions can only be available after information about this item, or after completing all possible dialogues with the characters. nine0003

Foreword
If, as a child, a magician had told me that I would write fairy tales, I would have been very surprised. Like many, I loved listening to fairy tales that my mother read, inventing and fantasizing, imagining myself as the heroine of these stories. But all this remained in a distant, distant childhood. When I was in the fourth grade, they gave me an assignment at school — to compose a fairy tale. I remember that writing caused me great difficulties. I couldn’t think of anything, so I didn’t find anything better than to take a thick book, find a small, little-known fairy tale there, rename the characters in it and thus complete the task. When we become quite adults, the fairy tale completely disappears from our lives, everyday worries and chores do not allow us to look around and notice that life around us is teeming with magical objects and events. Indeed, in our childhood there were no computers, the Internet, smartphones, tablets, all that without which our children can no longer imagine their lives. But this is exactly what our ancestors have long dreamed of. With one movement, by swiping a finger over the tablet, we can see what is happening now in the most remote corners of our planet, why don’t you “roll, roll an apple on a silver saucer” from the folk tale of the same name? There is even an apple on many devices. I still wonder how our ancestors looked into the future and so accurately described objects completely unknown to them? And the famous «light, my mirror, tell me, am I sweeter than everyone in the world, all rouge and whiter?». After all, this is the usual Skype or Instagram for all of us. I’m not talking about the flying carpet and self-propelled sledges, which have long become part of our lives. Therefore, we need to notice the miracles around us and rejoice in them. And many people don’t make it. I just bought one phone, it has already gone out of fashion, I need to buy the next one. I did not have time to rejoice at the new car, the auto industry threw another, more advanced model onto the market, which I certainly want to have. An endless consumer race, people do not have time to rejoice and appreciate what they have. Everything develops as in the fairy tale «About the Goldfish» by A. S. Pushkin. nine0003
How did those fairy tales that you, dear reader, now hold in your hands, come about?
Many writers discover their talent as a storyteller thanks to their children. Thus, the incomparable Swedish storyteller Astrid Lindgren composed her first fairy tale, which we know as Pippi Longstocking, in 1941, when her little daughter Karen fell ill with severe pneumonia. There was no medicine, no money either. Astrid treated her daughter with folk remedies and fairy tales … And very successfully, the daughter recovered, and Astrid Lindgren subsequently wrote down invented stories and sent them to a publisher, at 19In 45, the book was published, and Astrid woke up famous. So the illness of her daughter Karen gave us wonderful stories about Pippi Longstocking, and then Carlson, who lives on the roof.
The famous fairy tale «Alice in Wonderland» was also born thanks to ten-year-old Alice Liddell, who knew Lewis Carroll and went with him, accompanied by her sisters, to a picnic. On the way, the girl got bored, and to entertain her, this fairy tale was invented.
The famous Hans Christian Andersen also drew inspiration from talking to children. The fairy tale «Flowers of little Ida» was born from the question of a six-year-old girl, Ida Thiele. Andersen was friends with her father, also a storyteller who collected and published Danish folk tales. Ida showed Andersen a withered bouquet of flowers in a vase and asked crying: “Are they really dead, my flowers?” Andersen felt sorry for the girl, and he began to compose a fairy tale that flowers never die at all. They go to the ball and have so much fun there that they look very tired afterwards. Little Ida liked the story very much. nine0003
Antony Pogorelsky, under this pseudonym Aleksey Perovsky wrote his fairy tale «The Black Hen», had no children of his own. He took part in the upbringing of Alyosha’s nephew. In a letter from the boarding house, a ten-year-old boy wrote to his uncle that he became friends with … a chicken, every day he brings crumbs from the table to her. Apparently, the boy was completely lonely in St. Petersburg, where he received an education. Reading his letter, Perovsky suddenly thought: “What if Alyosha’s bird is only a simple black chicken in our world, and in another, for example, underground, it’s a man in a black camisole, perhaps even a minister?” Printed in 1829The Black Hen became the first Russian literary fairy tale for children.
I owe the appearance of my first fairy tale to my son. He studied at an art school, and one day he was given, in my opinion, a strange task — to draw a nail. What seemed easier? But the whole trick was that the nail had to be drawn in such a way that, looking at it, one could tell the world the story of this very nail. My son painted the nail, he passed the assignment. This nail did not go out of my head, and in an instant, when I was doing household chores, the story of a happy nail simply illuminated me. At that time, I studied at the CROSS club with M.E. Litvak, and many of the ideas gleaned from books and seminars were reflected in the fairy tale. I read this tale as a report at one of the seminars. The tale found a lively response from the listeners. What was my joy when M.E. Litvak proposed to include my fairy tale as a conclusion in the book «Religion and Applied Philosophy». It was my creative debut, and immediately such luck! Did I want to continue this activity? Still would! Fairy tales poured out of me like a river. Sometimes I had to get up in the middle of the night to write down another fairy tale that was trying to get out of my head. Now every event in life was special and magical. A fairy tale could be born from any trifle: a broken tree seen, childhood memories, a phrase thrown by someone, or a book read. I remember how A. Akhmatova’s lines from the poem “I don’t need odic ratis” touched me to the depths of my soul:
If only you knew from what rubbish
Poems grow without shame,
Like a yellow dandelion near a fence,
Like burdocks and quinoa.
Back then, as a student of the eleventh grade, I thought: “How can something beautiful, sublime, spiritual be born from rubbish — something that makes people become better?” Now I understand well what Anna Akhmatova meant. Any nail lying on the road can bring history to life, the main thing is to notice it, not to pass it by. And each person is able to tell this story in their own way. nine0003
From ancient times, people passed from mouth to mouth folk wisdom contained in fairy tales. After all, it’s not without reason that even a saying exists: “A fairy tale is a lie, but there is a hint in it — a lesson for good fellows.” A fairy tale is a pantry of human experience and understanding of the world since ancient times. Reading fairy tales, people realize themselves and their dreams. Fairy tales give us the opportunity to remember that we are created in the image and likeness of the Chief Creator. A person, reading fairy tales, can feel himself the Creator of the Universe, and not its tiny cog. And the Creator of the Universe cannot be controlled, it cannot be belittled, it cannot be declared by anyone and nothing. He creates his own destiny. Fairy tales give us a sense of our significance and the ability to resist evil in any of its manifestations. A fairy tale gives us the strength to change our lives for the better. Apparently, therefore, the fairy tale has a therapeutic effect. nine0003
Many people think that fairy tales are only for children. But after all, a child lives in each of us. This is how E. Berne described three I-states: I am a parent, I am an adult and I am a child. All three states are necessary for life. The child is the source of our desires, inclinations, needs. It is here that joy, intuition, creativity, fantasy, curiosity are contained. All psychic energy is concentrated in the Child. It may be the best part of our personality. Isn’t that why, when we become adults, we continue to read and watch modern fairy tales: detective stories, thrillers, fantasy, romance novels. Some deep meaning is encrypted in each fairy tale, each reader will find something of their own. A fairy tale is like a multi-layered pie, where everyone chooses the layer that suits him, is in tune with his worldview, or can give an answer to an important internal question. That is why at any age in a fairy tale you can discover something completely new. nine0003
Tale of the soul
At birth, each person receives a living and trembling soul. She looks like a bird. While a person is small, his soul-bird chirps and sings when he feels good, and screams loudly when he feels bad. Some people manage to grow a big, big bird out of a small bird, which takes them to heaven. And there is nothing more beautiful than such a flight. But most people try to put their bird in a cage. Someone — in gold, someone — in iron or just wooden.
The bird is forced to sit in a small cage, and this often makes her sad. A bird does not grow in a small cage. The worst thing for a bird is when, under the influence of upbringing, sharp thorns are driven into the cage, each of them has its own name: “you must”, “you can’t”, “it’s too early for you”, “it’s too late for you”, “don’t stick your head out”, “shame on you”, “uncomfortable”, “what people will say”, “you are to blame”, “scary”, “offensive” and many others. The older a person becomes, the longer these spikes become, and there is less and less room left in the cage for the poor bird. There comes a moment when sharp thorns touch beautiful feathers, and then they begin to injure the bird’s flesh. She cries and calls for help, but her voice is not heard, and even sharper and longer spikes penetrate the cage. To save himself from pain, the magical bird begins to heal its wounds by building up horn patches on them. More and more of them, tender feathers are no longer visible at all, only horny plates, they do not allow thorns to injure the body of the soul. Gradually, over the years, the bird acquires a shell, like a turtle. The shell is heavy and thick, it pulls to the ground, you will never again rise to heaven with it. Even walking with such a weight is difficult for a person, let alone flying. But the soul is still alive and wants to fly, because for this it was created, it remembers how wonderful the state of flight is. She calls a person to heaven both in a dream and in reality. He who heard the cry of his soul, understood it, seeks salvation. But it is not so easy to get rid of the shell, sharp spikes and cage. Terrible growths are removed one by one, and sharp thorns strive to inflict pain on a tormented soul. But the bird given to a person at birth is very strong and can overcome all obstacles. nine0003
Transformation
A family of lions lived in a forest. Father is a lion, mother is a lioness and a little lion cub. The Pope reigned supreme in the forest. This lion was strong, agile and smart. All forest animals respectfully obeyed him. Mother lioness fed the family. She was an unsurpassed hunter: dexterous, quick as lightning, flexible, but at the same time a loving, tender and caring mother. The lion cub has not yet become famous for anything, he was just a cute and funny child. He was always taken care of by his strong, kind, beautiful parents. nine0003
Once hunters came to the forest. All the animals fled in fear, but the lions, since they were royalty, did not run away. They rushed at the hunters, protecting their forest and their subjects. But the hunters had guns. The lion father and lioness mother were shot dead. The lion cub hid under a bush, and they did not notice him. So he remained the only lion in this forest.
Left without a king, the animals gathered for a council.
— Who will govern us? the monkey asked. “The lion cub is still small, he won’t cope, and he won’t grow up soon,” she continued. nine0003
– Why do we need a king at all? the wolf intervened. — We are strong animals, we can do without a ruler, we can stand up for ourselves.
“But the lion cub will still grow up and become the strongest in the forest and take its royal place,” the wise owl answered from the tree.
— And if we do not tell him that he is a lion, that he is strong, and that he is the king of animals, but if we bring up weakness and cowardice in him, then he will never become a real lion and the king of animals, — the hyenas began to cry. They hated the lion family more than all the animals in the forest for their strength and courage. nine0003
The animals agreed never to mention the word «lion» in the forest, and the cub was called Nobody. Time passed, the lion cub grew up. It was very painful for him to remember how people killed his parents. He saw everything, but his memory returned less and less to that tragic moment of his childhood, and soon he forgot his parents altogether and that he was a lion.
The curious magpie sometimes asked the lion cub:
– Who are you?
“I am Nobody,” answered the lion cub.
— Who are your parents? nine0003
— I don’t know.
— Where did they disappear to?
— I don’t remember.
Each time the magpie flew away, laughing, and the lion cub remained at a loss. He struggled to remember the answers to these questions and could not. His memory was completely silent.
All the animals told him how terrible the world around him was. How evil animals are, and people are even worse. They hunt animals, kill them. It got to the point that even hares frightened the lion cub. They suddenly jumped out of the bushes with loud cries. And the lion cub, trembling with fear, ran away into the thicket, the hares laughed at him. nine0003
The wolves said to him:
— Nobody, you must bow when you see a wolf. We are the strongest animals in the forest.
The hyenas echoed:
— As soon as you see one of us, immediately run to hell, otherwise we will eat you!
In the hiss of the boa constrictor, the lion cub heard a threat:
– Choke shh shh!
The bear said to the lion cub:
— You are a weak, stupid, worthless, cowardly animal, you are of no use in the forest.
After such speeches, the lion cub would go into the thicket and weep loudly. He was very hurt to hear such words. nine0003
According to him, everything in the forest was of some use. Whether it is a small ant, a bee, a berry or an animal. How did it happen that he alone is worthless, unnecessary and useless? Other animals did not take him to play with him, he often remained alone and reflected on his difficult fate. He often asked himself questions: who is he? why is he in this forest? what is its role? what should he do? He felt some inexplicable power in himself, but did not know what to do with it, where to direct it. He often came to the forest lake, looked at his reflection in the water and tried to understand who he was. nine0003
— Why am I alone in the forest? For example, there are many hares, monkeys, wolves, bears. Forty, owls, ants, even more butterflies, and I’m the only one and I’m called so strange — Nobody.
One fine day a tiger appeared in this forest. He took a closer look at the situation, saw that there was no king in the forest, and the animals behaved as they please. He let out a booming roar, calling for all the animals and birds of the forest to gather in the clearing.
When all the animals had gathered, he said:
— I am your new king. I am the strongest in this forest. Any beast should bow when meeting me. Each hunter is obliged to give me half of his prey, and those who do not hunt must bring me one of their cubs to eat every month. nine0003
The animals began to make an indignant noise, then the tiger, growling menacingly, hit with its paw, and the three wolves sitting in the first row fell down dead. This made an impression on the forest dwellers. They all fell silent, and the sad ones went home.
The forest began to live according to new rules. Sorrow filled this forest. Predators gave the tiger half of their prey, while their own children were starving, and they themselves, from weakness, could not hunt as successfully as before. Herbivores had to give their young to be eaten. The animals cried, sighed, but obeyed the cruel tiger. He convinced everyone that the tiger is the strongest and smartest animal on earth, and everyone obeyed him unquestioningly. The lion cub also lived according to new rules. He saw all the injustice of the newly-born ruler, but could not do anything, so he closed himself in more and more and spent a lot of time in solitude on the shore of a forest lake in the very wilderness of the forest. On one of those days, he was looking at his reflection in the waters of the lake, and then a snake’s head poked out of the lake. The head hissed. The lion cub, out of habit, began to back away in fright. The head looked around, and a turtle began to crawl out onto the shore. Looking at the lion, she laughed heartily. The lion hid behind a bush, and the turtle laughed louder and louder. The turtle was well over a hundred years old. She very rarely got out on land and did not know the latest forest news. nine0003
— How funny, the lion — the king of animals — hides in the bushes when I appear! — she exclaimed.
“Y-y-you are wrong, I am not a lion, I am Nobody,” the lion stuttered, stuttering.
— How is it Nobody? The turtle was outraged. — If I am old, this does not mean that I have lost my mind and will not be able to determine who is in front of me. In front of me is a powerful, dexterous animal with a magnificent mane, powerful clawed paws, razor-sharp fangs — a real king of animals. And this king of beasts is afraid of me, an ordinary turtle? How everything has changed in this world! nine0003
The lion, feeling that he was no longer in danger, went to the water’s edge and looked into it as if into a mirror. An adult mighty beast with a shaggy mane, white sharp fangs was looking at him, and only in his sad eyes was a hunted animal hiding.
The turtle continued:
– I knew your parents. They were brave, dexterous and beautiful lions, just rulers of this forest. How can you be Nobody if you have such parents? After all, you are just a copy of your father and mother, only even stronger, more beautiful and more powerful, because the virtues of the two of them and all your ancestors were combined in you, and there were also many of them. They honorably defended their forest, their subjects, administered justice, established fair laws and monitored their implementation. You are destined to become the king of this forest. This is your right and only yours! nine0003
— I don’t remember my parents at all, I don’t know where they went and why they left me. I am a weak, useless being, of no use. So think all the animals in this forest.
– All animals means every animal in this forest, but I don’t consider you a worthless and useless creature, so your statement is false. You must take your royal place,” continued the tortoise.
— What kind of king am I if I’m afraid of everyone? the lion continued to whine.
– Yes, one does not become a king just like that, it requires intense training. The king must know and be able to do a lot. First you need to know the history of your family, how the best of the best lived and ruled. You can learn from their example. Then you need to master the science that studies the laws of life, it is called philosophy. In order to learn how to communicate with your subjects and create fair laws, you need to master the science of logic, and in order for forest animals to listen to you, you need to be able to speak in public. In addition, you will have to win your place under the sun in a fierce struggle, you must be hardy and strong, be able to fight, know military techniques and tricks. nine0003
Leo thought about it all, it seemed very difficult to him, but the goal of becoming a king was very tempting. He said to the turtle:
— Can you teach me the sciences you were talking about? I will be a diligent student.
— I can’t teach you. I can only transfer knowledge to you, and you can only learn by yourself! the turtle said. “Moreover, I can only convey to you the knowledge that I possess. In other knowledge, you should look for the best and ask them to share their experience with you. A truly knowledgeable person will never refuse to transfer knowledge. To know is the sacred right of one who seeks knowledge! And the one who does not want to share knowledge, in fact, does not know anything himself, but only pretends to know. nine0003
These words made the lion think. He began to walk through the forest and look closely at the animals. He was observant and able to draw conclusions from his observations. He had long noticed how the panther hunted.
“This is speed, this is grace!” thought the lion.
Once, plucking up courage, he approached a panther and asked:
– Panther, I have not seen a more graceful animal and a more successful hunter, please teach me how to hunt like you do.
Panther, a little embarrassed, replied:
– I agree, hunt with me and learn.
Then the lion noticed how strong the bear was. With one blow of his mighty paw, he could knock down a tree. The lion approached the bear and asked him:
— Bear, you are the strongest animal in the forest, teach me to be as strong as you.
— Well, — said the bear, — just, mind you, train every day, and don’t shirk, don’t whine that the paws hurt and the tail falls off!
“I agree,” said the lion. nine0003
The lion also noticed how well the pack of wolves hunted. He went up to the leader of the wolves and said:
— None of the animals hunt as amicably as you, the wolves. How do you manage with such a large team, and everyone obeys you at a glance?
“Oh, this is my art, that’s why they chose me as the leader,” the leader of the pack replied.
“I want to learn your art,” continued the lion.
“I will gladly share my experience with you,” the surprised wolf replied. nine0003
Leo continued his observations and noticed which of the animals did something better than others, and asked these animals to share their knowledge with him.
The lion learned cunning from the fox, he took history lessons from the owl, music lessons from the nightingale, he studied running with the cheetah, he learned to swim with the crocodile, he studied logic and philosophy with the turtle. The whole life of the lion now passed in the lessons according to the schedule. Now he had no time at all to indulge in melancholy and think about his hard fate on the shore of the forest lake. And, surprisingly, none of the animals that treated him so badly before refused him the transfer of their knowledge. Everyone was happy to share their own experience, especially when the lion recognized his superiority in anything. More than one year has passed in such classes. The lion became completely different, they no longer treated him as before, and if someone, out of old habit, tried to frighten or offend the lion, he simply did not notice it. And there were fewer and fewer such animals, because offending someone who is not offended is not at all interesting, just like scaring someone who is not afraid. Finally the day came when the bear said:
— I can no longer teach you, you are stronger than me.
The fox said:
— And I cannot teach you, you are smarter than me.
