Resident Evil Village Ending Explained and What Happens in the Post-Credits Scene
Some players will find the ending of Resident Evil Village to be perplexing. Many plot threads come together here, both from this game and from Resident Evil 7, so it’s easy to get confused. We’ll run through the last 30 minutes or so of RE Village and explain the ending. We’ll also examine what happens in the post-credits scene and what it means for the series.
How does Resident Evil Village end?
The ending of Resident Evil Village begins when Ethan defeats Heisenberg’s mutated form. Mother Miranda appears, tells Ethan that Rose will be reincarnated as her daughter, and literally rips his heart out.
Chris Redfield regroups with Wolf Squad, and he and his team set out to destroy the Megamycyte that gives Mother Miranda her powers and to rescue Rose. Another BSAA team also arrives, to Chris’s surprise, and he wonders what they’re doing there.
Chris fights his way through the village and calls in missile strikes on a massive mycete barrier guarding the path to Castle Dimitrescu. Once he’s through the wall, Chris discovers that there’s a series of underground caverns leading to the Megamycyte. He fights a large Lycan guarding the area and plants a bomb on the Megamycyte. However, remembering his promise to save Rose, he holds off on detonating it and keeps progressing through the cave.
Chris finds Mother Miranda’s lab and finds out her backstory. Mother Miranda lost her daughter in the Spanish Influenza outbreak a hundred years before the game. When she lost her daughter, Eva, Miranda wandered into a cave to die and found the Megamycete, which infected her. She discovered that the Megacycete absorbs the consciousness and memories of anyone buried in the soil above. Knowing this, Miranda planned to find a vessel to bring Eva back to life.
After a hundred years of experimenting on the villagers, Miranda finally found the perfect candidate. She had previously given a sample of the mold and Eva’s DNA to The Connections, which resulted in the creation of Eveline. Miranda considered her to be a failure, but she led to Rose being born. Rose’s perfect blend of human and mycete genetics meant she could be used to bring Eva back to life.
Chris also finds the real Mia still alive in Miranda’s lab. After confirming it’s really her, they begin heading back to his team’s helicopter so she can be evacuated.
In the meantime, Ethan realizes he actually died three years prior at the Baker house when Jack kicked him in the head. He’s lived on by sheer force of will as a Molded. That’s why he was able to sustain such a massive amount of physical damage and reattach his limbs. He awakens and finds himself in the Duke’s carriage on the way to Mother Miranda’s location. However, he’s on his last legs as he’s taken too much damage. His hands have begun to turn to stone and ash, and he doesn’t have much time left.
Ethan reaches the site of the ceremony and confronts Mother Miranda. Rose has been reborn, and Miranda and Ethan duke it out over her. After an intense struggle, Miranda turns to stone and crumbles, revealing Rose. As Chris helps Ethan escape, the Megacycete emerges from underground and rears up to attack.
Ethan volunteers to stay behind and detonate the bomb attached to the Megamycete as he’s slowly crumbling to dust. Chris makes it back to the helicopter with Rose, and it takes off. As it begins its ascent, Ethan detonates the bomb, destroying the Megamycete and the village.
As they’re flying away, one of Chris’s squad reveals that they retrieved the body of one of the BSAA soldiers and that they weren’t human. Instead, the BSAA sent a squad of Bio-Organic Weapons to gather samples of the mycete (which has enormous implications for the future of the series). Chris gives orders to pick up the rest of his squad and plot a course to the BSAA Europe headquarters so he can get to the bottom of what the organization is planning.
Resident Evil Village Post-Credits Scene Explained
There’s a post-credits epilogue in Resident Evil Village which will confuse some players as it takes place in the future. The blonde-haired girl placing flowers at Ethan’s grave is Rose. This means, if Rose aged normally, this scene is around 15-18 years after the main game.
Rose’s parentage makes her half Molded and half-human. This appears to have given her superhuman abilities. The only one we get to see is increased strength when she snaps at the agent who jokingly called her “Eveline.”
This scene leaves a lot to the imagination. We know Rose is working with an organization to combat “situations” and that Chris is somehow involved. However, we don’t know whether this is meant to segue into a future game or just to show that Rose survived and managed to keep her humanity intact.

Resident Evil Village, undoubtedly one of the most anticipated video games of 2021, perplexes audiences up until the very last minute. As we mentioned in our Resident Evil Village review, we absolutely loved the game’s stunning visuals and memorable boss fights. And now that enough time has passed for fans to play the game at least once, it’s finally time to wrap our heads around what happened.
Even after over 10 hours of vicious lycan attacks and mind-numbing scares, the ending can seem confusing to even the most devoted fans of the franchise. You’ll find major spoilers for some of the biggest plot points in Resident Evil Village below, so if you haven’t had a chance to play the game yet, beware.

Resident Evil Village ending explained: How it starts
If we’re to understand what happens at the end of the game, we need to first establish what led up to the confusing conclusion.
Towards the end of the previous chapter, Resident Evil: Biohazard, Ethan Winters defeats the main antagonist Eveline, and then he and his wife Mia get rescued by fan favorite Chris Redfield (now working for Blue Umbrella).
After the events that took place in the Baker farm, the Winterses went into hiding for three years, before they had a baby girl named Rosemary and subsequently moved to Eastern Europe.

Unfortunately for Ethan, that “happy ending” didn’t last very long. At the start of Resident Evil Village, Ethan and his wife are once again treated to a visit from their dear friend Chris, who promptly shoots Mia. Chris and his guys in the BSAA (Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance, a United Nations sanctioned task force) then kidnap baby Rose and stuff an unconscious Ethan into a truck. The game truly begins as Ethan finds himself awake in the middle of a forest following a violent attack on the truck that he was being transported in.
Ethan stumbles across a mysterious village where he’s ambushed by a horde of villagers, including rabid lycans. In an attempt to save his daughter from the grasps of evil, Ethan has to embark on a journey that sees him encounter inhuman creatures as well as various horrors mysteries.
Resident Evil Village ending explained: Mother Miranda’s role
Towards the end of the game, we learn that the oft-spoken about (and never seen) village «goddess» Mother Miranda impersonated Mia at the start of the game. Her intent was to stealing young Rosemary, and using her as a host body to revive her own long-deceased daughter, Eva. Miranda’s plan consisted of turning Rose into crystals and dividing her into four glass flasks, which are then distributed amongst Miranda’s four adopted «children:» Lady Alcina Dimitrescu, Donna Beneviento, Salvatore Moreau and Karl Heisenberg.
The Duke, the game’s jolly merchant, informs Ethan that “Rose’s essence is still intact” and that his daughter can still be saved by collecting all four flasks and placing them in the village’s ceremonial altar. Why Miranda separated Rose into the flasks is never explained.
After defeating all four “Lords” and retrieving all four pieces of his daughter, Ethan finally meets Mother Miranda, the Big Bad of the game. But Ethan doesn’t beat her outright. Instead, Mother Miranda rips his heart right out of his chest, which should have killed him.

However, instead of dying, Ethan is greeted by a vision of Eveline, the antagonist from the previous game, who reveals that he had been dead all along and has been infected with the E-virus since being killed by Jack Baker in the opening hour of the previous game. Finally, the game explains how Ethan was able to reattach his forearm earlier on in the game using just willpower and a few drops of medicine.
While Ethan is coming to terms with his existence (or lack thereof), Chris fights his way through Mother Miranda’s defenses and makes his way into her laboratory. There, he comes across evidence of how Resident Evil Village (and Resident Evil: Biohazard) tie into the larger universe. From Miranda’s notes, we can discover that she had previously been a mentor and inspiration for Dr. Oswell E. Spencer, who later went on to establish Umbrella Corporation and develop the T-virus, which kicked off the events of the entire Resident Evil franchise. Spencer also appeared to have gotten the idea for Umbrella’s logo from the altar located within the village.
As Chris rescues the real Mia from the lair, Ethan clings to life, defeats Miranda and puts a stop to her evil plans. Dying, Ethan volunteers to stay behind and sacrifice himself to detonate the source of the mold virus known as the Megamycete while Chris, Mia and a newly returned Rose escape in a helicopter.
Resident Evil Village ending explained: post-credits scene
Resident Evil Village’s post-credit scene shows an adult Rosemary Winters taking the bus to visit Ethan’s grave on his birthday. Rose is seen wearing her father’s jacket, which Ethan wrapped around her right before his ultimate sacrifice, as well as Mia’s wedding ring, which we saw earlier in a hallucination created by Donna Beneviento.
After laying down flowers on his headstone, Rose’s sentimental moment is rudely interrupted by someone who appears to be a BSAA agent. The agent mockingly calls her “Eveline”, which angers Rose as she threatens to use “powers that even Chris isn’t aware of.”
As the cutscene shows, Rosemary is clearly being closely monitored by the BSAA as during her encounter with the agent, we can hear a sniper state that he has “a clear shot” to eliminate Rose if necessary. However, the two quickly resolve the misunderstanding, get into a car, and drive off as the agent notes the uncanny resemblance between Rose and her late father. The scene ends as we see a lonely silhouette slowly making its way towards the car.
Now this is where things get really interesting. If the player were to use Photo Mode during this closing cutscene to zoom in on the mysterious figure, they can discover that it’s actually a model of a jacket-less Ethan Winters approaching the vehicle. Whether or not this was done intentionally remains to be seen, since it’s perfectly possible that Capcom just wanted to use a silhouette of a generic average-height male character. However, this does beg the question, could Ethan somehow still be «alive?» Since he’s been technically dead all along, it’s definitely possible.
Resident Evil Village ending explained — will Ethan come back?
Just like in the movie The Sixth Sense, the game foreshadowed the big reveal that the protagonist was dead all along on multiple occasions. The first instance of this came in the very beginning of the game as Ethan was putting baby Rosemary to sleep at home — interacting with Ethan’s laptop reveals a diary entry in which he states that he still feels that a part of him “is still trapped in that hellhole in Louisiana,” where he first contracted the E-virus from the Baker family.
Another curious observation that we came across occurred when Ethan was captured by Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters. After the 9 ft tall vampire lady takes a sip of his blood, she rather rudely mentions that it tastes a little “stale.»
Shortly afterwards, as soon as the protagonist defeats Dimitrescu, Ethan comes across the village hag, who upon hearing that he had “almost died” began pondering about how a man could be “almost dead. ” Weird.
Although the game’s ending clearly indicates that “the father’s story is now finished,» we expect that in future games, the player will very likely be in control of Ethan’s daughter Rose. However, even though the next Resident Evil development will be a part of Rose’s story, we can’t rule out that Ethan may still have some sort of role to play.
It’s very possible that given the circumstances of Ethan’s off-screen death, we can expect a comeback or a small cameo somewhere down the line. After all, this is the Resident Evil universe, where characters have a tendency not to stay dead. As my colleague Henry T. Casey told me, “when you don’t see the corpse, you can’t bet against a return.»
Resident Evil Village ending explained — what’s next?
Given Resident Evil Village’s post-credits scene, we can expect that Rose will take on Ethan’s role as the main protagonist. We may see Rose developing the “Eveline-esque” powers that Miranda hinted at, with Chris Redfield adopting some sort of “mentor” role to help her control her powers.
However, with development of Resident Evil 9 still likely years away, it’s unclear whether we’ll see Chris follow up on his investigation of the BSAA allegedly using bioweapons in a very Umbrella Corporation-esque fashion.
We’re still expecting the release of the multiplayer Resident Evil Re:Verse as well as any possible DLCs, so the plot of the ninth game will largely depend on what will be revealed next. However, with Biohazard being released in 2017 and Village being released in 2021, we may well have to wait until at least 2025 to find out.

Resident Evil 8 Village is a new game in the series and a direct continuation of the story of Ethan Winters, which began in the seventh part. In this material, we will briefly describe the plot and ending if you want to keep abreast of events, but there is no opportunity to play. We will also share our theories in response to the most popular questions that might arise after passing.
Brief story
The story begins three years after the events at the Baker Mansion. Mia, Ethan’s wife, is rescued and cured of mold. Under the supervision of Chris Redfield, a young family moves to Europe and they have a girl named Rosa.
The family idyll does not last long. One evening, Mia is killed by Chris Redfield himself, and then takes the child and Ethan. The convoy with the family, for unknown reasons, gets into an accident, and Ethan loses consciousness. Waking up already in the forest and, trying to find his daughter, he ends up in the nearest village.
Naturally, something strange is going on in the village. There, the hero is attacked by mutated people, very similar to werewolves. After a while, Ethan meets the survivors and learns from them about Miranda’s mother. The villagers regard her as a protector and goddess and do not understand why she does not protect them from the terrible creatures that terrorize the village.
During the search in the village, the hero learns that Rosa is most likely in a nearby castle. However, Ethan will not receive a warm welcome there either — he first meets Miranda and her «children»: the vile-looking scientist Salvator Moro, the three-meter vampire Alsina Dimitrescu, the inventor Karl Heisenberg and the insane puppeteer Donna Beneviento.
The protagonist is sent to Lady Dimitrescu as a «delicacy». Ethan escapes, finding out that the giant woman and her daughters are, of course, not real vampires — they are the product of Miranda’s biochemical research. The weak side of the younger vampires is the cold. It is this knowledge that will help the hero deal with all the daughters of Lady Dimitrescu and engage in battle with her.
In the castle, Ethan finds a container with Rose’s head — Miranda’s mother somehow divided the girl into parts, preserving her soul. Now the task of the father is to gather the daughter together. It quickly becomes apparent that each piece is in the custody of one of the «children». Ethan faces the difficult task of meeting everyone. Of course, no one will give him the flask just like that.
Our hero’s next destination is Donna Beneviento. Her abilities are to control infected flowers and intoxicate the mind. In addition, Beneviento is obsessed with dolls and communicates through them more often than in person.
After a series of nightmarish hallucinations about the house and his own child, Ethan kills the puppeteer and gets another flask with a part of his daughter’s body.
The third «child» of Miranda’s mother is Salvator Moro. The mutations affected him the most, completely changing his appearance and physiology. Now Moreau looks more like a rotting merman than a human. He received a corresponding side effect — an involuntary transformation into a huge fish. According to the personal statement of the former scientist, he was the most miserable and least respected among the «family».
After dealing with Moro, Ethan discovers that his daughter has great power and is very important to Miranda. Using Rosa’s abilities, the mother tries to revive her long-dead daughter, Eve. In addition, Rosa is the perfect embodiment of Evelina, the culprit of the events of the seventh part of the game. It was Evelina who infected the Baker family with mold and turned them into maniacs.
Next, the hero is contacted by Heisenberg, who unexpectedly offers to unite and even voluntarily gives the flask. It turns out that Karl has hated Miranda for many years, as she forced him to become a mutant, and hatches a plan to kill her. However, he won’t be strong enough on his own, so he wants to use Ethan and his daughter’s abilities.
Considering such an offer dangerous, the hero refuses. After a short conflict, Ethan finds himself at the Heisenberg factory, where he collects terrible monsters, combining metal and organic matter.
Suddenly, Chris Redfield intervenes, who has been trying to defeat Miranda for quite some time. The fighter tells the hero that he did not kill Mia, and Miranda lived with Ethan for a long time. A woman has exceptional abilities and can change her appearance to anyone. Five shots to the head did not harm the «goddess», and during the transportation she woke up, arranged the very accident, after which Ethan ended up in the village.
Chris agrees with the main character on cooperation and gives him an improvised tank for the last battle with Heisenberg.
Ethan defeats the inventor, but at the same moment Miranda herself comes to him. The Mother once again demonstrates her shapeshifting ability, showing the hero that she controlled his every move. Killing her false offspring was part of the plan, as they became a liability. Miranda is really preparing a ritual to revive her daughter through Rose, and in order for Ethan to stop interfering with her, she rips out his heart.
Ending
From this point the story switches to Chris. His task is to interrupt the ritual, and for this you need to get into the very heart of Miranda’s possessions.
After a series of hard fights with the infected inhabitants, Chris finds himself in a cave where the original mold is located. The virus is alive and exists in the form of a giant germ. It is from him that Miranda’s mother draws her strength.
Not far from the cave is Miranda’s laboratory. There, at last, the whole puzzle comes together. Chris learns that everything that happens is not magic, but a virus contained in the mold — megamycelium. Once upon a time, after the death of her daughter from an illness, Miranda wanted to commit suicide. She went to the cave so that no one could interfere with her, but found a mold there that completely changed her body, giving her immortality and incredible abilities. There, she was “filled with knowledge” that the megamycelium somehow split and preserved the consciousness of the dead.
Miranda decided that thanks to the virus she could revive her daughter, she just needed to find a suitable shell. Continuing her experiments with the mold, the scientist developed her abilities and infected the villagers, taking them under complete control. Being a brilliant doctor, she promoted her research among students, among whom was Ozwell E. Spencer — one of the future founders of the Umbrella Corporation.
Miranda’s «children» are nothing more than successful experiments, but due to many side effects they were not suitable for the role of a vessel for Eve. But from the moment of birth, Rosa was an ideal option, which led to the kidnapping of the girl.
It is clear from the photographs that Miranda took part in the research on Evelina, the girl infected with mold in the previous part. What’s more, the baby was grown from Eve’s DNA and megamycelium particles. Given that it was Evelina who infected Ethan and Mia, Rose is a direct extension of her and an organism originally born with mold particles and the DNA of Miranda’s daughter.
In the same lab, Chris finds parasites nurtured by particles of an organism from a cave — kadu. They also look like living human fetuses. Probably it was their settlement in the bodies of the experimental subjects that the distraught Miranda was engaged in. The real Mia was also kept there all this time. She is alive, but has been imprisoned for quite some time.
It turns out that Ethan is not so simple. In his hallucinations, the hero meets Evelina again, who says that the man was killed three years ago in the Baker mansion, but it happened to him in much the same way as with Miranda — the body was restored thanks to mold. In such an elegant way, the writers explained the incredible regenerative abilities of the protagonist. And that is why even without a heart, our hero does not die. Waking up, Ethan again goes to Miranda, who has already begun the ritual of resurrection. Rose is alive again, and the father is ready to give everything to save his daughter.
After a tough fight with Miranda, Ethan’s body begins to break down. With the last of his strength, he passes his daughter to Chris who came to the rescue and blows up the megamycelium, sacrificing himself. This is where the father’s story ends.
In the last screensaver, we see an adult Rose on her father’s grave. Chris’ men come for her and the game ends.
Now we can talk about questions left unanswered after the passage.
Is Ethan dead?
Yes, in the game we are shown the death of the hero. Life in it for a long time supported the mold, making Ethan the same mutant as those with whom he fought. But regenerative abilities are not unlimited. As it becomes known from Miranda’s notes, the megamycelium stores the memory of dead people, but it is destroyed by an explosion.
However, not everything is so simple. That leaves Rosa, whose DNA and blood contains a huge amount of mold particles. Technically, the girl is quite capable of “raising” her father from her blood again. After all, he was able to do without even a heart.
There is another option. In the Resident Evil universe, miraculous resurrections have happened more than once, and the heroes have changed sides every now and then. The B.S.A.A. soldiers, who received very little attention, could well collect megamycelium particles, thanks to which the next mad scientist will be able to resurrect Ethan as a new bioweapon and antagonist of one of the following parts. Such a move would be very in the spirit of the series.
What a superweapon among the soldiers of B.S.A.A.
B.S.A.A. is a security organization established after the fall of Umbrella as part of a global effort to combat the rise of bioterrorism. Chris Redfield previously worked for B.S.A.A. (he was hired by them during the events of Resident Evil 5) and they have been presented as a force for good for a long time. However, dubious funding, methods, motivation, and apparent fascination with bioweapons have long led some fans to suspect the organization is playing a double game. At the time of the seventh part, Chris left B.S.A.A. to serve in Blue Umbrella, but remained on a working relationship with them.
B.S.A.A. are only mentioned in passing in the new game. In the end, Chris Redfield finds out that not just soldiers were sent to them as a second detachment, but B.S.A.A fighters changed by the virus. This is quite an interesting fact, which should probably be revealed in the next part. Perhaps in the world of the game, another organization has appeared, besides Umbrella, which is engaged in experiments on people, but much more successfully.
Why does the security guard call Rose Evelina in the post-credits scene. Split personality, or still Miranda was able to complete the ritual
At the end, one of Chris Redfield’s agents takes Rosa to the car. The man unsuccessfully jokes with the girl, calling her Evelina, which greatly angers Rosa. This event speaks of several important points at once. Firstly, even an ordinary security guard is aware of the difficult story of Rosa’s birth, and, secondly, the girl, apparently, is undergoing training, and almost everyone knows about her «powers».
It is unlikely that Miranda’s ritual will succeed exactly as she wanted it to. Otherwise, Rose would not have behaved so aggressively when called by a false name. However, Rosa, Evelina and Eve are definitely relatives, which the girl herself remembers, because she already knows that she has “powers”. As the daughter of an altered Ethan, Rose already possessed many powers. The ritual most likely strengthened the girl, but did not destroy her personality.
Who is the Duke — theories about the origin of the character
One of the most mysterious characters in the game is the Duke. Nothing is known about his personality or his past. Toward the end of the acquaintance, Ethan still asks the Duke who he is, but he only replies that he himself does not know. Therefore, there is no exact answer what kind of strange merchant who follows Ethan on his gloomy journey through Miranda’s possessions.
If you keep in mind the idea that there are no magical creatures in the game world, and all abilities appear in people as a result of viruses, then the Duke is most likely one of the victims of Miranda’s experiments. He does not show any special qualities, except for his enormous weight and height. At the same time, the Duke is not at all helpless — he cooks Ethan’s food perfectly and constantly moves, easily getting into places where the hero gets almost by accident. At the same time, the Duke is well aware of the plans of Miranda’s mother and is not afraid of being killed in the possessions of her «children».
Since the same Heisenberg was turned into a mutant against his will, most likely, the Duke was left no choice either. It is possible that he helps Ethan because of a personal dislike for Miranda, although the character does not openly show this. Basically, these are trade relations with the protagonist, but sometimes the Duke helped the hero and completely free of charge.
In addition, the Duke is the only character other than Lady Dimitrescu who speaks in beautiful old-fashioned phrases. This gives rise to another theory that in the past he was a possible husband or lover of a bloodthirsty lady. No wonder you can meet him in her castle.
Who was walking towards the car with Rosa
Just before the very end, we see Rosa leaving in the car with Chris’ agent, and a man is walking towards them. There is no exact information about who it could be. However, this way the writers could show a spoiler for the ninth part. With a high degree of probability, it can be assumed that the protagonist of the new game will be Rose, but it is unlikely that she will act alone. So far, in the new parts of the series, we have only seen Chris Redfield, but there are plenty of other positive and negative colorful characters in the lore. Perhaps Rosa will have a new teacher who will gradually persuade the girl to use her supernatural abilities more often and indulge her anger.
***
For experienced players, it was no surprise that vampires and werewolves in the new resident evil were born from a test tube. The plot isn’t complex, but you have to give credit to the writers for how gracefully they were able to tie together the plots of the two games. We are looking forward to the next part.

A small warning: there will be spoilers. I tried without them, but it doesn’t work out, so AHTUNG.
What took so long is finally here: after more than a year and a half, Resident Evil 8 Village is getting its first and possibly only story DLC. In Winter’s Expansion, including the story expansion Shadows of Rose, I played Rosemary, the adult daughter of Ethan Winters, the protagonist of the seventh and eighth installments.

When Capcom announced a reboot of the Resident Evil series in 2016, fans were initially skeptical. The fifth and sixth parts were quite controversial and the seventh part should change that. In my opinion, she fulfilled her mission by 150%! More emphasis was again placed on survival horror and gunplay was kept to a minimum. Together with Ethan Winters, an enigmatic protagonist appeared, which I again took control of in Resident Evil: Village. At the end of the eighth part, I saw his rescued daughter. And the new chapter manages to captivate me with creative ideas, variety, and a new camera perspective, even if it still has some minor flaws.
In the new story expansion for Resident Evil: Village, I did not play as Ethan Winters, but controlled his daughter, Rosemary. At the end of the main game, in the post-credits scene, there was already a hint that something was wrong with her. Even then, I assumed that it should appear in the game, but I did not think that it was just like that. Now I found out that the girl carries certain features. And at school, she is bullied not because of her father’s worn jacket, but because her mutations make her unlike her classmates.
That’s why she works for Chris Redfield and his band of mercenaries that I met in the base game. What exactly she is doing there and why she is always sent on mysterious missions is not explained. However, Rose does not like this job and its mutations, she prefers to lead a normal teenage life.
When she gets a chance to get rid of her features, she grabs onto it and travels to the village of horrors in Romania, where her father fought monsters years ago. They say that the purifying crystal is able to rid her of mutations. But there’s a catch: in order to get the crystal, she must infiltrate Megamycete’s mind. This is a mysterious mushroom that the main villain Miranda explored back in the main game. As Rose begins her search, she ends up in the Dimitrescu Castle’s torture chamber. And this is where the horror begins. Again.
Shadows of Rose does a few things differently than the main game: the most obvious thing is the new camera perspective. You can now choose between first and third person view in the main menu. From a gameplay standpoint it doesn’t really matter, with the new 3rd person camera it plays well. It is most comparable to the one that was in the two remakes of the second and third parts. There is another damage mechanic: since Rose has mutated, she can use her powers to kill opponents. This brings a bit of tactical depth to the game because, on the one hand, there are only limited ability charges, and on the other hand, you have to decide again and again which opponents to use your valuable charge on.
And the ability also allows Rose to remove that disgusting «soup» that drips from the ceiling and seeps through the walls in the ancient walls through which we pass. This in turn opens up new paths and something else… I don’t want to reveal that «something» at the moment. In fact, I moved through the already well-known area: the Dimitrescu castle, as well as the Beneviento house. With the difference that this time there are new puzzles, opponents and weapons.
So, as I crawled through the crumbling castle of Dimitrescu, I was constantly supported by a mysterious figure named Michael. He talks to Rose in the form of floating golden speech bubbles, gives helpful advice, and even assists in boss battles. He always has medicinal herbs ready, or even a gun for Rose. This makes an already simple game even easier. After all, anyone who has played Resident Evil: Village will quickly find out who is behind this «mysterious» character. Resident Evil has never had a particularly deep storyline.
But in «Shadows of the Rose» this is taken to the extreme again: I was given more than just abstruse explanations for Megamycetes or Rose’s powers. Questions about why wooden puppets can walk, or why an entire house can dissolve in disgusting red goo, have also gone unanswered. Only here is the question: someone expects something different from Resident Evil? Me not. Just think of Ethan Winters, who survived severed arms and a 100 meter fall. That’s why I love Resident Evil for something else: terrible trash that is combined with addictive gameplay and creepy atmosphere.
Shadows of Rose can be roughly divided into three areas. Two of them are classic Resident locations that I already know from the main game, but only «enriched» with Rose’s new abilities. It all still works great: the mixture of puzzles, shooting and horror stories provided me with great entertainment. But I’d rather not reveal what Capcom came up with in the last of the three sections. Because you should definitely experience it for yourself. I will write one thing: this location stands out from the rest of the game due to its stealth mechanics and nightmarish enemy design.
Despite many positive aspects, DLC is not a revolution for the genre. And the playing time, which is only three hours, leaves much to be desired. The Winter’s Expansion add-on that comes with Shadows of Rose is definitely suitable for a short trip in the horror genre, but for many this «journey» may seem too expensive — 20 euros in the European market. In return, you can expect a really successful horror, which is one of the best that have appeared in this area in recent years.
In addition to the single player story, the new DLC pack also includes an expansion of the mercenary mode with additional missions and new characters. So, even if you are not interested in this mode, you will get it right away with the add-on. The biggest innovation, aside from Rose’s campaign, is the third-person mode, which literally lets you experience the game from a new perspective. All in all, I highly recommend Winter’s Expansion, especially to fans of the franchise. As for me, the story of Shadows of Rose is really fascinating and three hours flew by like 5 minutes. And, as is the case with other parts of Resident Evil, the replay value is very high.
Output :
Due to my age, I started playing Resident Evil quite late, but the seventh part went well for me. After that, I «touched» the remakes of the second and third games with mixed success and was looking forward to the last part of the series called Village. And she made me very happy! For me, this part was an almost perfect mixture of action, puzzle, horror and survival. And although not everyone shares this opinion, I am convinced that the eight set the series on a new path.
