New PS5 from Sony: design, stuffing
The new Sony PlayStation 5 console, long-awaited by all Ukrainian gamers, went on sale on November 19, 2020. Attention to it was riveted immediately after the presentation on September 17 this year. Residents of the USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand became the first happy owners of the new generation console on November 12. And exactly one week later, the PlayStation 5 became available for other countries of the world, including ours. What is this game console, what is its difference from the previous version? We will try to give answers to these and many other questions in this article.
Unusual PS5 design
The design of the new console was kept a secret for a long time, and one could only guess what the Japanese had come up with. And on June 11, 2020, Sony declassified the appearance of the novelty, which amazed many fans and exceeded all their expectations.
The new PS5 is available in two versions: the Digital Edition, which is the budget version, and the full version. The first option does not have an optical drive. Otherwise, both consoles are identical.
The first thing that strikes you when you see a new set-top box is its size. It turned out to be much larger than its predecessors. Dimensions of the flagship model without stand — 390x104x260 mm, and the Digital Edition is inferior to it only by 12 mm. Yes, and weigh the console has become much more — 4.5 kg vs. 2 kg PlayStation 4.
However, the impressive dimensions of the console absolutely do not spoil its appearance. The futuristic design of the console will harmoniously fit into any interior. PS5 can be installed both horizontally and vertically. To do this, the kit includes a special stand that will allow you to properly fix the device and make the set-top box more stable. By the way, it is quite easy to detach it, and the base is attached with a bolt, which is also included in the kit and is located inside the stand itself in a special pocket.
The console is currently only available in white, but the side panels are detachable, which may lead to the idea that other colors will soon appear on the market.
In the center of the body there is an insert made of black glossy plastic, which is quite easily soiled, collects dust and fingerprints are clearly visible on it. When the device is turned on, a blue backlight lights up on the front panel of the case. In standby mode, it turns orange, and when the console is in operation, it turns white.
For full cooling performance, there are grids on the back of the case and narrow openings on the front side between the side panels and the black center.
Technical filling PlayStation 5
Let’s take a closer look at the main technical characteristics of the PlayStation 5.
Processor
The gaming power of the console is built on the AMD platform. Especially for the PS5, an 8-core processor with 16 threads AMD Ryzen Zen 2 of the third generation with a frequency of 3.5 GHz was developed. Whereas the PS4 used a 1.8GHz CPU and the PS4 Pro used a 2.1GHz CPU.
Video card
The graphics processor in the new console is represented by a custom Radeon Navi chip based on the RDNA 2 architecture. The CPU frequency is 2.23 GHz, and the performance is 10.3 teraflops. The graphics card supports hardware ray tracing and 8K resolution displays at up to 120 frames per second.
Memory
The PS5’s RAM is 16GB GDDR6 with a bandwidth of 448GB per second and a 256bit bus interface.
This console uses an SSD with 825 GB of memory, which makes the new generation console much faster than its predecessors. The download speed of data from the SSD is from 5.5 to 9 GB per second. The drive is made using the new high-speed NVMe technology, thanks to which game worlds will load almost instantly. In addition, an additional SSD can be connected to the device, which will make it possible to significantly increase the amount of internal memory.
Connectors
USB Type-A Hi-Speed and Type-C Superspeed connectors on the front of the console. On the back are two more USB type-A Superspeed ports, LAN, HDMI 2.1, and a power connector.
Gamepad
What really blows the mind is the new DualSense controller. It differs significantly from its predecessor in size, materials, and capabilities. Let’s start in order.
The new controller is noticeably larger than the DualShock 4 and slightly heavier. The touchpad also became visually wider and received side illumination along the contour, as well as a microphone that can be turned off at any time with a simple press of a button.
The d-pad is almost silent: the button movement is quiet and clear, the sticks are soft, the plastic is smooth, slightly textured in the grip areas. The build quality is excellent — the plastic does not creak or crunch when squeezed.
But the most innovative is the Haptic Engine vibration system and R2/L2 motorized triggers with adjustable drag force. All this together gives a simply stunning result.
The controller does not just vibrate, but can simulate many different actions: kicks, pokes, rolls, which allows you to fully immerse yourself in the game and feel almost everything that happens in it. Tactile sensations during the game have become much more realistic thanks to the new triggers. For example, in the Astro`s Playroom tech demo, you can feel the realism of spring compression with the help of triggers, while in Sackboy they are hung with the weight of objects. You can also hang shooting, pulling a bowstring, pressing the gas and brake pedals in races, and much more. However, all this beauty is lost when playing games from PS4, because they do not have such detail of vibration or force of pressing the triggers. In such a case, it seems that a modified DualShock 4 is being used.
The battery capacity of the joystick is 1560 mAh, which is almost twice as much as the previous model. And now it charges via USB type C.
Redesigned GUI
The PS5 GUI has been significantly redesigned and is significantly different from the PS4. The main menu now consists of two tabs — games and applications. From here you can also get to the updated PlayStation Store. At the bottom of the screen there is a pop-up menu where you can find trophies, friend lists, downloads, and so on. It can be called up by pressing the PS button on the gamepad. The profile settings menu, set-top box settings, and the search menu are located in the upper right part of the screen.
Box Contents
Sony’s new game console comes with the console and DualSense controller, power cable, HDMI cable, and USB type-C cable. Also in the box there is a stand for the console and technical documentation. There are other PS5 accessories, but they can be purchased separately.
The difference between the PlayStation 5 and the previous model: the pros and cons
As you can see, the new console is significantly different from the previous model and has obvious advantages. Of the minuses, one can single out the noise of the optical drive, but at the same time, many gamers, on the contrary, noted that the console is quite quiet, especially compared to the PS4 Pro.
It should also be noted separately that the virtual reality helmet on this model will only work within the framework of backward compatibility. That is, the only place where you can use PlayStation VR is games with PS4.
Sony’s new game console is backwards compatible
PS5 is backwards compatible with the previous PS4. Almost all PS4 games can be played on the new console, and they will run faster and look better thanks to the performance of the PS5.
The PS Plus subscription should also be highlighted here. In addition to giving 2-3 games for free every month, now with the release of PS5, it has a «Games Collection» where you can find 20 games of the past generation, including such bestsellers as Uncharted 4, Until Down, God of War, Final Fantasy XV and others. The PlayStation 5 is not backwards compatible with PS, PS2 and PS3.
Description PS5, no matter how good it is, will not allow you to feel the fullness and sharpness of emotions from its use. If this review encourages the purchase of a Sony PlayStation 5, then those who wish can check its availability in our electronics store and pre-order it.
