Skull and Bones: Everything we know so far

Skull and Bones is one of the most mysterious new games for 2023. That’s largely because Ubisoft’s pirate adventure has been in development for almost a decade, and suffered a litany of delays in that time. But it’s on the near horizon now, and from all of the Skull and Bones gameplay we have seen so far it could be a real Sea of Thieves competitor.

In Skull and Bones you’ll start as a lowly outcast, shipwrecked on an outpost without a crew to call your own. Gradually, you’ll rise in infamy and capability, and eventually control a great fleet who can conquer the Indian Ocean and battle it out with other players. With its immersive ship-to-ship combat and massive suite of customization features, we have high hopes that Ubi will deliver. So keep reading for everything we know so far on Skull and Bones.

Skull and Bones release date

Skull and Bones is set to make sail on March 9, 2023. Ubisoft announced the new Skull and Bones release date on September 28, as the publisher explained that it required additional time to give the game (which is now content complete) «further polish and balance» following feedback from pre-launch technical tests.

Skull and Bones platforms

Skull and Bones will release on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2023. There were originally plans for Skull and Bones PS4 and Xbox One editions, back when the nautical adventure was scheduled to release in 2018, although Ubisoft later dropped support for the two systems as it shifted its focus towards the new generation.

Skull and Bones delays

There have been five Skull and Bones delays since the game was unveiled at E3 2017. Skull and Bones was first delayed in 2018, where the game was pushed to a loose 2019 window as reports surfaced suggesting development had been rebooted. It was then delayed to 2020, and again into 2021, and then a fourth time to 2022 – where it was eventually given a November 8 release date. Sadly, Ubisoft has since delayed Skull and Bones a fifth time, pushing it to March 9, 2023.

Skull and Bones setting

Skull and Bones is set during the ‘Golden Age of Piracy’ – a period between the 1650s and the 1730s where maritime piracy was a significant issue around the globe. Ubisoft has settled on an open world inspired by the Indian Ocean, which the publisher has described as being «beautiful yet dangerous.» We’ll be able to explore this setting as a pirate on the rise – starting out as a lowly outcast who is focused on gaining infamy and hunting for resources, funneling the pair into building the ultimate pirate ship.

Skull and Bones gameplay

The Skull and Bones gameplay is designed to make you feel like a deadly pirate captain. While something like Sea of Thieves has you controlling individual aspects of your vessel to make it function, Skull and Bones has you controlling all of the ship’s functions – such as navigation, combat, and crew management. It’s kind of like the naval sections in Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, albeit with nine years of iteration behind it.

There are three Skull and Bones ship types: Navigation, Firepower, and Cargo. Each ship has its own proficiencies and perks, and you’ll ultimately want to build out a fleet of ships that leave you prepared for any situation you may find yourself in or contract that you take on. Navigation ships are the fastest of the lot, which is great for when you’re moving over large distances; Cargo ships allow you to carry the most items, perfect for when you go off in search of valuable loot or resources for crafting; and Firepower vessels, naturally, pack the biggest punch in combat.

You’ll be able to customize all of the available ships (12 in total) to better dial in your preferred playstyle. Additionally, you’ll also need to be wary of ship condition and crew morale – Ubisoft has even teased that your crew can call for a mutiny if they aren’t properly fed or kept happy. And lastly, we know that Sea of Thieves will have a penalty for failure; if your ship sinks, you’ll respawn at the closest Pirate Den and only some of your cargo will be recovered – you can go back for the rest in another ship, although you should be prepared to fight other players over it once you get there.

Is Skull and Bones a single-player game? It’s a good question, and one that Ubisoft hasn’t made super clear over the years. We now know that Skull and Bones is now a multiplayer-first, live-service experience that will give you the choice of playing solo if you want to. There isn’t a set single-player campaign, as Ubi wants players to «create your own stories.» So you’ll be running through pirate contracts and missions as you would in the multiplayer experience – albeit in lonelier waters, filled with little more than pirate hunting AI and any NPCs necessary to complete quests. You’ll also be able to play Skull and Bones co-op with two friends.

Skull and Bones multiplayer

Skull and Bones multiplayer is the main attraction here. Ubisoft has designed the game to allow you to sail the open seas either alone or in groups of three, engaging in either PvE or PvEvP – as in, either against existing elements in the environment or with other real-world players thrown into the mix for a little extra flavor. It’s clear that Ubisoft has developed Skull and Bones with competitive pirate action at its heart, so expect many of the ship-to-ship combat and defensive systems to be geared around player interaction. Oh, and if you really want to lean into the fantasy of it all, every player will be able to get their own secret pirate lair.

Skull and Bones crossplay

Ubisoft has confirmed that there will be full Skull and Bones crossplay support from launch. Speaking with GamesRadar+, game director Ryan Barnard told us: «multiplayer is something you choose to do – either through uPlay with your friends or in-game, you can invite players to join your party» and that «yes, Skull and Bones is fully crossplay across PS5, PC, [and] Xbox Series X. «

Skull and Bones beta

Following the most recent delay, Ubisoft has announced that there will be a Skull and Bones beta «in the near future.» While that is incredibly unspecific, we do know that it will be an open beta session, which means that any and all players on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X who are curious about Skull and Bones will be able to jump into the action.

While you wait for Skull and Bones, why not check out some of the best games like Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, or jump into one of the best PS5 games and best Xbox Series X games

Skull and Bones is the upcoming swashbuckling pirate RPG from Ubisoft. It’s been a long time coming, having been originally announced all the way back in 2017 at an E3 event. Since then, the game has suffered five delays, pushing it back multiple times and now into 2023.

In the wake of its extended development period, Skull and Bones has changed quite a bit since we first saw it. What started off as a simple PvP ship combat game has been retooled somewhat, and can now be experienced single player if you’d like. Generally, however, Skull and Bones is a multiplayer game where players build out a fleet of ships and take on contracts as well as other players.

The world of Skull and Bones is filled with outposts to explore, each hiding treasure, and NPCs called «Kingpins» that will give out jobs to do. Customization plays a huge part here, as players can change the appearance of their pirate, and their ships.

Here’s everything we know about Skull and Bones so far, including all of the latest news and rumors, and the current release date.

  • What is it? Ubisoft’s upcoming pirate adventure
  • What can I play it on? PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC
  • When can I play it? March 9, 2023

Skull & Bones: release date and platforms

After the most recent delay, Skull and Bones will launch March 9, 2023. This follows a new showcase which gave us our best look at the game yet. It will release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

When Skull and Bones was announced it was only confirmed to release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Though, back then, it was due for release in 2018. After many delays, and the launch of the new generation of consoles, Skull and Bones has now dropped PS4 and Xbox One. It’ll still be on PC but instead, it’s coming to the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, too.

There have been reports of Skull and Bones’ development troubles, which we’ll go into more below, but we started getting hints that Ubisoft was getting ready to announce a new released date when, back in March, the game’s website received a redesign.

Another hint dropped during an earnings call in February 2022 (via VGC), Ubisoft stated that it is aiming to release Skull and Bones during its next fiscal year, meaning the developer was aiming to release the game by April 2023. Thanks to an Ubisoft Forward, we learned that Skull and Bones planned to launch on November 8, 2022, a day before God of War Ragnarok. This obviously did not hold true.

Skull & Bones will also be Ubisoft’s first game to sell under a $70 / £70 price tag for new-gen consoles, something it previously hadn’t committed to. Speaking in a recent interview (via Axios), Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated: «Some of the games will come at the same price as the competition. The big AAA games will come at $70.»

Skull and Bones beta testing

For anyone interested in trying it out, you can always sign up for future Skull & Bones live beta tests. We previously saw closed playtests between September 16 to September 19 for PC players, where it was nice to see the game being opened up. If you’re curious to know more about how you can join in future tests, we’ve got the full details in our Skull and Bones beta guide.

Skull & Bones: trailers

Ubisoft has released a handful of trailers for Skull and Bones so far but given the game’s overhaul during development and its new vision, the latest gameplay trailer shows quite a different direction for Skull and Bones.

Ubisoft Forward
The latest trailer for Skull and Bones reveals that Ubsioft has turned the pirate PvP title into more of a survival game. You’ll scour the seven seas for ships to destroy, hoover up their loot, and use that to craft new hulls and gear to buff out your vessel. You can see a lot of the new systems at work in the video below:

Gameplay trailer
E3 2018 brought us a gameplay trailer for Skull & Bones, showing off how things will work in the game’s cutthroat hunting grounds. It’s unclear how much of this gameplay we’ll actually see in the finished product. Check it out below:

Cinematic and gameplay walkthrough trailers
Skull and Bones received two trailers during its E3 2017 debut, one which was cinematic and another which showcased the game’s multiplayer and PvP gameplay. Again, it’s hard to say how much of that footage will be represented in whatever the final game is. Check them out below:

Skull & Bones: Gameplay

Gameplay changes
When Skull and Bones was first revealed it was more akin to Rainbow Six Siege than it appears now. The game was a small team PvP game where each player took on the role of ship, kitted it out with specialised guns and armor, and then the two teams would blast each other to splinters with their cannons and muskets.

That’s all changed, or at least it’s no longer the focus. Now, Skull and Bones is a survival game first. You start life as a shipwrecked pirate. You have to scout out resources to build a tiny, practically defenceless sailing vessel, and from those humble beginnings you will raise yourself up to become a pirate lord.

Using your ship you will sail around an open world, scouting out lumber, precious metals, and all the other resources you could need to craft equipment. You’ll face AI enemies, such as other ships, but also wild animals, like hippos and sharks. And you’ll harvest more resources and booty from them, using it to trade for money at pirate dens and other outposts, or use it in your crafting.

The best way to earn money, equipment, and blueprints is to take on contracts. These jobs will see you hunting down bounties, assaulting towns, or seeking out long lost treasure. The contracts you have access to are determined by your ‘infamy’ and completing contracts will also help your raise your infamy level.

Crafting
While you can buy gear and ships with the booty you pick up, Skull and Bones lets you craft equipment to fit out your schooner.

As you roam the seven seas of Skull and Bones, you’ll discover blueprints. These may be rewards for completing contracts or hidden away at the bottom of treasure chests. They will be essential for the game’s crafting. With blueprints and resources you find in the world, either from scavenging shipwrecks, harvesting natural resources, or hunting animals in the sea, you can build entirely new ships, create new weapons and armor, and upgrade all of the fittings on your ship.

Some of the most powerful hulls and equipment will need to be crafted. So if you want to become the most fearsome pirate on the seven seas you’ll have to invest your time in crafting and blueprints.

Progression
While you may start Skull and Bones as the victim of a shipwreck, left with no worldly possessions beside the shirt on your back, you won’t stay there for long. As is common for Ubisoft’s open-world games, as you explore the world, complete missions, take on enemies, and craft new gear, you will gain experience and level up.

Though, rather than call it experience, in Skull and Bones your experience is called infamy. After all, after booty and rum, the thing pirates like most is fame. As your infamy level increases you will gain access to new contracts, and as you complete contracts you will be rewarded with big lumps of infamy. It’s a virtuous circle.

Ubisoft wasn’t clear, but presumably your infamy will have other benefits, too, such as letting you access more powerful gear and ship hulls.

Skull and Bones Multiplayer

Skull and Bones started life as a PvP game, but it’s since evolved into a survival game that can be played entirely solo. It’s quite a drastic change from the original vision for Ubisoft’s open world pirate game. However, Skull and Bones multiplayer still exists in a changed form.

While the whole game can be played alone, you can open it up to other players, both friends and foes. When taking on a contract mission and set out into the world to earn loot, you can invite another player into your party, joining up to take on the mission together. While it will make the game a little easier and you will need to split some of the earnings, because you’ll often find yourself taking on more enemies and earning more loot than your hold can, er, hold, sharing it with a friend doesn’t mean you’ll end up with less.

You can also open up your game to enemy players, turning the seven seas into a PvP arena. While you can’t be attacked in the safe waters around a pirate den, as soon as you slip out of its boundaries you can be targeted by other players. Of course, on the way out to a mission you may not attract much attention but when you’re on the way back to port, your hold full of booty, enemy players will see you as a high value target on the amp and may come to hunt you down.

In this way, PvP and co-op do still have a part in Skull and Bones but it is in a much reduced form.

Skull and Bones ship types

There will be multiple ship types in Skull and Bones, each with significant strengths and weaknesses. The three kinds Ubisoft confirmed in the Ubisoft Forward were Cargo Ships, Navigation Ships, and Firepower Ships. There may be more types we’ve yet to see, but as well as these categories, we know there are multiple hulls of each type, so there will be lots of opportunities to find the perfect ship for your playstyle.

Cargo Ships
Larger and slower than the cover ship types, cargo ships have large holds that let you carry much more loot than any other ship type. While they may not be as good in a fight as the firepower ships, nor as fast as the navigation ships, if you take a cargo ship into battle you won’t need to leave any loot behind.

Navigation Ships
While you won’t have much in the way of armor or hardpoints where you can install lines of cannons, the navigation ships are the fastest and most maneuverable type of vessel. Not only are they good for scouting ahead, in a battle a good captain will be able to weave between their enemies and stay ahead of their guns. Their other weakness is a small hold, so this ship type is best used when you have a friend to help pick up the loot after a battle.

Firepower Ships
If you want to bring the fight to a battle then this is going to be the ship type for you. It may not be fast as fast or as maneuverable as a navigation ship, it may not have the armor or the hold of a cargo ship, but the firepower ship can load up the most guns, and dominate the battlefield.

Skull and Bones: news and rumors

Previously we had quite a substantial news and rumors hub in this guide but a lot of it has been made redundant by the news revealed in the most recent Ubisoft Forward. However, there are still some elements that are in date, such as the Skull & Bones TV show. We’ll keep this updated as more news appears on the horizon.

Skull & Bones is ‘not a narrative-driven game’
If you’re hoping for a great story in Skull & Bones, you may want to temper those expectations. Speaking in a recent interview with True Achievements , game director Ryan Barnard told us:

“Skull and Bones is not a narrative-driven game. We have narrative pieces — in the game, you’ll meet important NPCs called Kingpins which have their own stories that you’ll learn as you develop rapport with them by taking on contracts with them. There is an underlying story to the game with which we build the entire world lore, but that’s not the main focus. We want players to create their own stories and be able to choose the type of pirate they want to be.»

Instead, Barnard calls the progression system, Infamy, to be the driving force in this campaign. Given that this is a live-service experience, this isn’t that surprising that story isn’t the centre of attention, though it may prove disappointing for those after a fresh single-player pirate adventure.

Skull & Bones is being adapted for TV
Skull & Bones hasn’t been released yet but it’s been announced that it’s being adapted for TV. In a report by the Hollywood Reporter, it’s being said that Ubisoft is working with Atlas Entertainment on the project which will be «a female-driven drama set in the lawless frontier of the Indian Ocean at the end of the golden age of piracy in the 1700s».

At the moment, that’s all there is to know—there’s no confirmed air date and no cast to speak of—but this will certainly be a project to keep a weather eye on.

Interesting

Most of Ubisoft’s game sales come from the PlayStation 4 (36%), followed by PC (27%) and then Xbox One at 20%. The corporation is very pleased with the results of the projects Far Cry 5 and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and can be proud of the viability of Rainbow Six Siege. nine0003

Skull and Bones overview is as follows. The gameplay of the game is built on the flooding of other ships. The goal is to get loot and turn into a powerful pirate. The trailer talks about how to reach the top of the food chain. Sailing works are similar to Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. The player can control the ocean, as well as shoot at the guns of other ships. There are various types of shots that allow you to damage naval vessels or deprive them of the ability to swim / shoot back. For example, each schooner can be equipped with a unique technique: shoot eight shots in one salvo or shoot without waiting for a cooldown. nine0003

Touching on the Skull and Bones system requirements on the PC, we highlight the following parameters:

Today, Ubisoft pushed back the release date for Skull and Bones on PC. Initially, the game was supposed to be released in 2018, as indicated by all open sources. But the developers decided that the release will take place no earlier than 2019th, and then even later — no earlier than April 2020.

Skull and Bones the release date for ps4 will not be soon, but in the meantime, you can look at other Ubisoft games. The company will present three of its own products next year. According to the firm’s latest earnings reports, it has three unannounced Triple-A games. They will be released in 2020. The first will be Splinter Cell, which is talked about a lot today. 90,000 Skull and Bones compared to other delayed Ubisoft projects

With Skull and Bones set to release no earlier than 2022, this game will join the ranks of several of Ubisoft’s most delayed games. nine0003

Despite major delays, the upcoming pirate adventure game Skull and Bones is still under development at Ubisoft. Ever since the release of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag , fans have been hoping that Ubisoft will move forward with the pirate adventure fairly quickly. Despite the delay, it looks like Skull and Bones could be the game Black Flag fans have been waiting for. nine0003

Fans eagerly awaiting the release of Skull and Bones unfortunately have to wait ahead. The release date for Skull and Bones will likely end around 2022/2023. Ubisoft is no stranger to delays, but such a long delay is unique. Skull and Bones is likely to rank among the longest delayed Ubisoft games of all time, but how bad is that compared to other Ubisoft delays?

Ubisoft Titles Delayed

Ubisoft’s Skull and Bones is just one of the few of their latest titles to receive a lengthy delay. Rainbow 6 Quarantine is another major project that has also been shelved. Quarantine was announced at E3 2019 with a 2020 release date. However, the pandemic proved to be a major setback to Ubisoft’s release plans, and news regarding the co-op tactical shooter fell silent. nine0003

There is no release date for Rainbow 6 Quarantine as such, but it should be released in 2021/2022. Though given the lack of current information, 2022 could be a more likely release date. The two-year delay and rumors of a possible name change due to the apparent delicacy of the word «quarantine» Rainbow 6 Quarantine is one of Ubisoft’s more notable delays.

Ubisoft’s rather unique title, The Avatar Project has been the subject of lengthy delays and the game should now be released alongside Movie Avatar 2 . What’s interesting about the game’s delay in Avatar is that it doesn’t seem to be related to the progress of the game, but rather to the progress of the movie. A sequel to James Cameron’s box office hit «Avatar» has been promised since 2010, but filming only began in 2017, and

has been constantly delayed ever since.

Very little is known about Avatar itself, but The Division developer Massive Entertainment, who is taking the reins, may suggest an open world title. Now it looks like the release date is The Avatar Project is in the hands of its movie counterpart, but with a release date set at 5-6 years after its original announcement, fans will be eager to see what the game has to offer.

Ubisoft’s closest thing to turbulence Skull and Bones is Call Of Cthulhu: Dark Corners Of The Earth. Similar in many ways to 2018 Call. of Cthulhu , Dark Corners — a title that received a mediocre reception. Despite the fact that the game has been in development for six years, since 1999 to 2005, it had little to offer at the time to impress gamers, perhaps due to the game’s lack of focus. Dark Corners suffered from a lot of indecision on the part of the developer, originally planned as a linear four-player co-op game, with a deathmatch mode almost added towards the end of development, before the game settled on the survival horror genre.

Where is the skull and bones?

After the announcement at Ubisoft E3 2017 press conference Skull and Bones has been a source of great excitement and frustration for fans looking for a new pirate adventure game. The massive open world of Skull and Bones looked so well-realized in early gameplay cinematics, but after numerous delays and a release date now set six years after the original announcement, it’s clear there’s more to development than meets the eye. from Skull and Bones .

Development of the skull and bones is not too different from the development of Dark Corners , it is rumored that Skull and Bones has resumed development.
