An image making the rounds online seems to suggest that classic PS1 survival-horror game Dino Crisis is coming to PS4 and PS5.

Capcom’s Resident Evil is gaming’s premiere survival-horror game franchise, and for good reason. However, Resident Evil isn’t the only survival-horror series that Capcom has made. During the PlayStation 1 era, Capcom also put out a dinosaur-based survival-horror game called Dino Crisis, which became a fan favorite in its own right. Dino Crisis spawned two main series sequels, a light gun game adaptation, and a mobile release, but the franchise has remained dormant for nearly two decades at this point.

There have been rumors over the years that Capcom may be pursuing a Dino Crisis remake or remaster, though nothing substantial has come from those. While it remains to be seen if the Dino Crisis franchise will ever come back with a brand-new release, it does look like modern gamers will now have easier access to the original Dino Crisis game at least.

Twitter user DarkClong shared an image of what is said to be the revamped PlayStation Plus menu on PS5. PS Plus Premium and the like have recently rolled out to those in certain Asian territories, and so information on what the service entails has been spreading online. The image in question shows Dino Crisis as one of the classic PS1 games coming to PS Plus Premium, indicating that the game will soon be playable on PS4 and PS5.

PS Plus Premium, the highest-priced PS Plus subscription tier, will give users access to hundreds of retro games, including plenty of PS1 classics. However, these PS1 classics aren’t just coming to the new consoles through PS Plus Premium. Some of them will actually be sold as individual purchases as well, so even those that don’t want to sign up for PS Plus Premium can still play them. And if one already owns these games digitally, they will be able to download them on PS4 and PS5 at no extra cost. This won’t apply to all the classic games coming to PS Plus Premium, so it will be interesting to see if Dino Crisis is one of them or not.

It will also be interesting to see if Dino Crisis will have trophy support when it comes to PS4 and PS5. Not all classic games will have trophies for players to unlock, but some will. For example, Syphon Filter is confirmed to have trophies come launch, and so will other classic PS1 games like Ape Escape and Wild Arms.

The PS Plus Premium launch date for North America is June 13, so fans don’t have to wait too much longer to find out more about the lineup and if Dino Crisis will indeed be included or not.

Dino Crisis is available for Dreamcast, PC, and PS1.

Capcom’s ‘Exoprimal’ Is Not a New ‘Dino Crisis’ Game, and Fans Are Outraged

During the Sony PlayStation March 2022 State of Play, Capcom revealed a new video game IP, Exoprimal. However, while Exoprimal promised futuristic warfare between exosuits and dinosaurs, Dino Crisis fans did not take the news as well. As the showcase revealed new Sony games for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, fans thought a sequel to Dino Crisis 3 in 2003 had finally come, only to discover something entirely different.

The Capcom Exoprimal trailer kicked off with a weather forecast from Ivy the Android in 2043 predicting rain … of dinosaurs. She then says that exofighters have already rushed out to the vortex to battle prehistoric hoards of dinosaurs falling through the sky.

The trailer also showed off several Aibius Exosuits in Exoprimal, like the bulky Roadblock Exosuit, built like a tank.

“In today’s news, five Aibius Exosuits have been deployed to exterminate a raptor super swarm in your area,” The official description reads on the Capcom YouTube channel. “These suits, each equipped with unique abilities to work together as a team, are developed by the next-generation Leviathan AI.”

In additional news, Aibius is recruiting candidates to pilot their latest Exosuits,” it continued. “Those interested in becoming pilots should apply at the nearest AIBIUS office. You may become humanity’s greatest hope.”

However, while Exoprimal left quite an impression, some fans wanted a Dino Crisis remake, sequel, anything to revitalize the franchise.

One of the biggest gut punches for Dino Crisis fans came once they realized the redhead in the Exoprimal trailer was not Regina. In Dino Crisis, Regina was the protagonist of the original video game and Dino Crisis 2, sporting signature red hair.

Capcom chose a design that resembled one of the most iconic Dino Crisis characters, and fans felt betrayed.

The trailer likely would have seen much less backlash had Capcom called the game Dino Crisis 4. However, the games might still prove different enough to warrant the distinction.

The Dino Crisis series functioned as survival-horror games. Meanwhile, the PS4 and PS5 game Exoprimal looks to focus much more on action and combat, both competitively and cooperatively.

The massively different gameplay may have drawn different kinds of backlash, with fans decrying the massive departure from the classic gameplay.

While Dino Crisis fans wanted Exoprimal as more of a direct sequel or remake, they could view it through the lens of a spiritual successor. It does not make the new game the same as the 1999 classic, but it makes the shift easier.

While it might not bring them right back into the world Regina fought to survive in, perhaps they save this new world in Exoprimal.
