Nvidia geforce gtx 1070 4k: Reddit — Dive into anything

A Look At 1440p, 4K & Ultrawide Gaming – Techgage

Summer might have only just begun, but the PC gaming world has needed no help from a season to heat things up. NVIDIA aided us last month with the unveiling of its first Pascal-based graphics cards, the GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX 1070.

As many anticipated, the GTX 1080 became the world’s fastest single-GPU solution, proving about 30% faster than the green team’s previous champ, TITAN X. Little did we realize at the unveiling of Pascal, TITAN X would be tied into a lot of comparisons – even those involving the 1080’s littler brother: GTX 1070.

It’s not hard to get excited about a new top-end graphics card, but despite all of what the GTX 1080 offers, I still find myself more excited about the GTX 1070. The reason is simple: it delivers the performance of last year’s $999 TITAN X at an SRP of $379. In fact, it could even best it: the GTX 1070’s GDDR5 is clocked a bit higher than the TITAN X, and the GPU itself is spec’d 350 GFLOPs better.

How could that not be considered exciting?

What’s not exciting, though, are the reasons for this article taking so long to get published. I’m not going to get into it too deeply here, but will say that some of the problems I experienced during my work for the GTX 1080 Best Playable article decided to linger. I am hoping at this point that the universe will agree that I’ve endured too much benchmarking nonsense this year and will give me a break. That’s how things work, right?

This article being published right now is a bit odd for the simple fact that AMD will soon be launching its Radeon RX 480. But, this is still a good preparation for that card, since we’ll be able to soon see what NVIDIA’s $379 offering can do against AMD’s $200 one. It should be interesting.

Since this article is overdue and work is piling up, I’ll go a bit lighter on text in this article than usual. If you’re not that familiar with NVIDIA’s latest Pascal GPUs, I’d recommend reading through the dedicated page for its features in the GTX 1080 review.

Testing Notes

When we need to build a test PC for performance testing, “no bottleneck” is the name of the game. While we admit that few of our readers are going to be equipped with an Intel 8-core processor clocked to 4GHz, we opt for such a build to make sure our GPU testing is as apples-to-apples as possible, with as little variation as possible. Ultimately, the only thing that matters here is the performance of the GPUs, so the more we can rule out a bottleneck, the better.

That all said, our test PC:

Graphics Card Test System
Processors Intel Core i7-5960X (8-core) @ 4.0GHz

Framerate information for all tests – with the exception of certain time demos and DirectX 12 tests – are recorded with the help of Fraps. For tests where Fraps use is not ideal, I use the game’s built-in test (the only option for DX12 titles right now). In the past, I’ve tweaked the Windows OS as much as possible to rule out test variations, but over time, such optimizations have proven fruitless. As a result, the Windows 10 installation I use is about as stock as possible, with minor modifications to suit personal preferences.

In all, I use 9 different games for regular game testing, and 3 for DirectX 12 testing. That’s in addition to the use of three synthetic benchmarks. Because some games are sponsored, the list below helps oust potential bias in our testing.

(AMD) – Ashes of the Singularity (DirectX 12)
(AMD) – Battlefield 4
(AMD) – Crysis 3
(AMD) – Hitman (DirectX 12)
(NVIDIA) – Metro: Last Light Redux
(NVIDIA) – Rise Of The Tomb Raider (incl. DirectX 12)
(NVIDIA) – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
(NVIDIA) – Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
(Neutral) – DOOM
(Neutral) – Grand Theft Auto V
(Neutral) – Total War: ATTILA

If you’re interested in benchmarking your own configuration to compare to our results, you can download this file (5MB) and make sure you’re using the exact same graphics settings. I’ll lightly explain how I benchmark each test before I get into each game’s performance results.

I should also note something that might seem obvious: there is no 1080p testing in this article. That’s because the GTX 1070 is such a powerful card, it’s overkill for that resolution in most cases. That being the case, I’d consider the GTX 1070 to be an ideal card for 1440p gamers, or those rocking ultrawide panels. Even the GTX 1080 doesn’t have quite enough gusto to become an “ultimate” 4K card, but it handles 4K a lot better than the GTX 1070 can.

There is one thing to consider, though: dual GTX 1070s would far surpass the performance of a single GTX 1080, and it’d technically (per SRP) cost just a bit more. I am never quick to recommend SLI or CrossFire nowadays, because it’s no secret that multi-GPU performance isn’t as ideal today as it used to be thanks in large part to the sheer number of “console ports” that hit the PC every week. But, it remains an option for those who don’t mind getting their hands dirty.

Nonetheless, let’s get on with the test results.

Four years ago, in May 2016, NVIDIA introduced two high-performance video cards of the 16nm Pascal family — the GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX 1070. Both use variations of the GP104 chip — the first has more structural blocks and higher frequencies. In addition, the GTX 1080 received a new GDDR5X memory at that time, and the GTX 1070 got the usual GDDR5. NVIDIA compensated for this by cutting the price tag by 35%. I am glad that in both cases we are talking about 8 GB — they will be very useful in some modern projects like Apex Legends and DOOM Eternal.

We will resume our acquaintance with this video card using the example of ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition . For tests, the CompX store provided it to us.

The video card itself is interesting due to its completely reference design, including reference frequencies and a cooling system with a single radial fan. In games, the GPU temperature reached 83°C with a critical value of 94°C. In this case, the frequency of the graphics processor rose to the region of 1700 MHz. If the load on the video card was lower, and the GPU temperature dropped to around 78 ° C, then the frequency rose above 1800 MHz. In a word: if you want faster, get it with an efficient cooler and factory overclocking, and this video card shows the basic level of capabilities of the GTX 1070.

Now let’s get acquainted with the test stand. The components were selected in such a way that, on the one hand, they were powerful enough and did not limit the potential of the video card, and on the other hand, they were closer to the people.

The 8-core 16-thread Ryzen 7 3700X was invited to the role of the processor. Its base frequency is 3.6 GHz, and the dynamic frequency can rise up to 4.4 GHz. The thermal package is declared at the level of 65 watts.

Processor installed on microATX board BIOSTAR X470GTQ RACING with the once top X470 chipset. You can buy it for almost $100. It supports all three generations of Ryzen, including the 3000XT series. If BIOSTAR adds support for chips on Zen 3, it will be a bomb for those who want to save money.

The cooler was also taken without bells and whistles — Vinga CL3007R . The manufacturer is asking $26 for a tower model with five copper heat pipes and a 120mm FDB-bearing fan.

RAM is no longer represented by the simplest modules, but without LED backlighting. We took a 16-gig kit DDR4-3733 Patriot Viper Steel so as not to experience happiness in overclocking.

The disk subsystem is represented by two ADATA solid state drives. For the system and the necessary programs, we took a fast M.2 XPG SX8200 PRO with a capacity of 512 GB.

All games fit on 2.5 inch SU800 2 TB. Yes, it is slower than M.2 PCIe, but it is more convenient to work with it due to the large number of games themselves. Decent for SATA SSD speeds in the region of 500 MB / s guarantee fast loading of levels and loading of the necessary data.

The Vinga Tank Middle Tower case with a glass side panel became a temporary shelter for all components. It supports EATX boards, graphics cards up to 380mm long, CPU coolers up to 165mm high, and 240mm coolant. Well made and looks nice.

But there are no case fans included. We have a powerful system — we had to add two 120mm Vinga RGB FAN-06 with colorful LED backlighting and durable FDB bearings. At a speed of 1100 rpm, we did not even hear them against the background of other components.

It’s better not to save on the power supply, especially if the pieces of iron need to be returned. So we took the Seasonic PRIME TX-750 with the 80PLUS Titanium certificate and a solid power reserve. Its efficiency reaches 96% at its peak. Add to that a fully modular cabling system and a 12 year warranty.

Monitor AOC U2790PQU helped with displaying the image. And an external system with AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K 9 coped with recording gameplay without loss of performance0014 .

That’s it, let’s move on to the test. Most simple online projects like Dota 2, Warframe and Crossout will definitely go to the GTX 1070 without any problems. For clarity, we left only a couple of such games. Let’s start with them.

War Thunder at maximum speed produces more than 180 fps on average. You yourself understand that there can be no talk of any friezes and jamming. In other words, it will not work to blame the system for the loss — you will have to look for crooked partners in the old fashioned way. If there are none, and the team still lost, then we have bad news for you.

In World of Tanks we chose an ultra preset and a fast LT key to make the gameplay more dynamic. The average speed reached 135 fps, and the rate of very rare events dropped to 86. Input lag in control? Stators in the video sequence? No, they didn’t!

We didn’t bother with ARK Survival Evolved — we just chose a high preset and ran to study the habits of dinosaurs at an average speed of 60 FPS. There are nasty peaks in the Frame Time graph, but they were not felt in the game. Although maybe we just got lucky on this test run.

RUST pleased even more. At almost maximum graphics settings, the current frame rate was consistently above 60 fps. Even a horseback ride did not cause any slowdowns. And the RAM, as for RUST, did not take much — less than 11 GB.

Unfading Rainbow Six Siege averages over 170 fps on ultra, with 0. 1% Low stats dropping to around 120 fps. PUBG and other shooters never dreamed of such a thing. Claims can arise only to their own reaction and skillful actions of opponents.

Ultra flight in Escape from Tarkov went fine. At the end of the test run, the rate of very rare events dipped below 30 FPS. Bots are partly to blame for this. In general, there were no problems with the responsiveness of the controls or the smoothness of the video sequence.

PUBG averages over 120 FPS with a folk mix of ultra and low settings, without freezes and brakes. The video card allows you to raise all the settings to ultra, but when playing for the result, this will interfere and distract more. And the atmosphere of the holiday is better to create a higher place in the overall standings.

GeForce GTX 1070 | Review and testing of video cards NVIDIA

Despite the present criticism and considerable cost, the release of the flagship video card GeForce GTX 1080 for NVIDIA turned out to be very successful. In terms of performance, the new product surpassed not only the Radeon R9 Fury X, but also the recent flagship brother GeForce GTX Titan X. And here is a new pleasant surprise for gamers — the powerful GeForce GTX 1070 with partner models starting at $379.

At the base of the GeForce GTX 1070 is a video chip marked GP104, the same as the older model 1080, but with fewer universal processors (CUDA cores). This graphics chip is based on NVIDIA’s new Pascal microarchitecture. The Pascal architecture brought us the long-awaited 16-nanometer process technology, which allowed us to significantly increase the operating frequencies of the graphics core. So in GPU Boost mode, this value can reach 1.7-1.8 GHz. Together with the new type of video memory GDDR5X, improved texture compression algorithm, all this allows GeForce 10-series graphics cards to reach a whole new level of performance. Will please GeForce GTX 1070 and overclockers in terms of overclocking.
