Detailed walkthrough
When the Sole Survivor arrives at Vault 81, proceed to connect their Pip-Boy to the entrance button in an attempt to open the Vault doors; however, the door will not open and instead Scott Edwards will respond to the activation attempt through the intercom system. Overseer Gwen McNamara will dismiss him and take over the conversation.
McNamara will advise the player character that if they want to enter the Vault, they need to bring three fusion cores as a means of payment. Alternatively, the Survivor may pass a Hard speech check. If the choice is made to part with the cores, they will be compensated with 100 bottlecaps by the overseer. Full access to the Vault will be granted regardless. Overseer McNamara will welcome them and they may trade and interact with the residents of Vault 81.

100 | Find fusion cores | I discovered a potentially functional Vault called Vault 81. Their Overseer offered a tradeoff: I can enter the Vault if I bring them Fusion Cores.
200 | Deliver fusion cores to Overseer McNamara | I was able to obtain the Fusion Cores that the Overseer asked for. I should return to the Vault door console and let them know. Hopefully, they’ll open their doors after this.
300 | Talk to Overseer McNamara | Now that I’ve gained access to Vault 81, I need to speak to the Overseer to give her the Fusion Cores she asked for.
1000 | Quest complete |
Notes
- Used cores will fulfill the requirement just as well as fresh cores. If entering the Vault early in the game, when cores are not widely available, this should mitigate the relatively high cost of admission while still getting some use out of power armor. However, if one has both used and unused cores, the game may prioritize the unused cores when removing from your inventory, so be sure to store them, drop them, or hand them to a companion if you only want to give up used cores.
- If the Survivor has any companions currently in their service, Vault security officer Scott Edwards will express his concern to Overseer McNamara, but she allows the companion to remain in the Vault without incident.
- If wearing power armor, the overseer will advise that some of the residents will be uneasy.
- Upon entering the Vault, dropping ones stock of fusion cores once the overseer begins to talk will allow them to enter the inner Vault without losing any fusion cores, and still get the 100 caps compensation.
- The door leading further into the Vault is marked ‘Inaccessible’ until the conversation with McNamara has been completed.
Bugs
- Playstation 4 Xbox One When you pass the persuasion check there is a chance that the door used to head deeper into the Vault will not open and remain inaccessible. There is no currently found fix for the issue.[verified]
- PC Playstation 4 When you enter the Vault, McNamara will finish her conversation with Calvin and then just look at you. If you try to interact with her she will just stare at you. Saving and reloading the game does not appear to solve this issue. It may be caused by dropping your cores after entering the Vault but before talking to McNamara; picking them up again resolves the issue in this case. [verified]

Vault 81 Layout
Upon entering the cave towards Vault 81, you will see a small radio comlink that can be used to open the vault. By opening up your Pip Boy at the entrance, you can initiate a conversation with Officer Edwards and the Overseer through the comlink. If you have a high enough Charisma stat, you can emphasize your status as a fellow Vault Dweller in the conversation and convince the Overseer to open the door.
Once inside, you will find the Overseer, Officer Edwards, and various other Vault Dwellers roaming around. There are tables with junk items that can be stolen, but doing so will provoke the Dwellers to attack you. The hallway to the back leads down a path towards Officer Edwards’ office and an elevator that goes deeper into the vault.
The lower section of the Vault has more Vault Dwellers in the area, including Austin who will give you a tour of the area for a charge of 5 CAPS (can be convinced to do it for free). Down the hall is the Overseer’s room, which has a terminal that you can hack to see various information. There is a variety of items you can steal, but do so at your own risk.
Back in the main hall of the floor, the downstairs area has many NPCs to speak to and some vendors that sell food and recovery items. You can change your hairstyle at Horatio’s Barber on the South side of the floor and visit Dr. Penske’s lab across from there. Penske’s lab has many food items you can harvest, including corn and tatos. There is also a terminal that has research notes about Penske’s work.
There is a pathway on section of the bottom floor that leads to Katy’s Classroom and Residential rooms. Each of the rooms contain various junk, health, and ammo items that can be stolen, but doing so will provoke the entire floor of security towards your position. Speaking to Katy will open up a small quest to speak with the Vault children about the Commonwealth.
Down the hall of this area leads to a ramp to the bottom Residenial area rooms and Dr. Forsythe’s lab. In the lab, you can heal yourself by speaking with Rachel. There is a terminal on Rachels desk that has various medical information on it. You can steal recovery items on the tables in the lab, such as Stimpacks and RadAway.

Additional Notes
The Secret of Vault 81
After completing the side quest Here Kitty Kitty, you’ll find that a child was bitten by a molerat carrying a deadly disease. Through this you’ll learn of a hidden passage to a different vault built to monitor Vault 81 by Vault Tec scientists, who planned to study the effects of diseases and cures cultivated through molerats. Unbeknownst to the current dwellers of Vault 81, most of the scientists in the secret vault were prepared to unleash pathogens, when the molerats escaped and overwhelmed the staff, entombing them for nearly two centuries alongside their counterparts. The only survivor was a modified Handy robot named Curie, who continued her work on cultivating cures based on the pathogens raised in the molerats — but was unable to leave her lab.

The quest can be accepted by meeting a resident of the shelter escorted by raiders (found near Jamaica Plain, other locations unknown) starts after killing the convoy. The quest also starts automatically when the Survivor tries to connect the Pip-Boy to the door control panel. A dialogue between the guard and the survivor begins, soon the caretaker of the shelter intervenes, and offers to gain access inside in exchange for 3 nuclear blocks. You can also ask for help, like «a resident of another shelter», and if you pass the charisma check, the door will open. nine0012
bugs
quest can be passed without giving nuclear units, just during the dialogue, by throwing them out of the inventory

Location in the Commonwealth. Inside you can find useful bonuses and equipment. Once in the bunker, you will find a sea of corpses. The upper levels are protected by turrets, while there are no enemies at all below. Search the rooms on the lower level for valuable items.
On one of the tables is a holotape «Guard’s Message» that tells the story of the place. In another room is the My Brain and Me magazine, which increases HP recovery per minute by one. nine0012
Nearby you can also find the key to the mayor’s toilet, and the remains of his own bathroom. On the toilet is a holotape «Mayor’s Farewell», from which it becomes clear that the official was a fierce corrupt official. Enraged his house, so he had to commit suicide.
