KNOWN ISSUES OR BUGS:
===============================================

Small holes in the world geometry. There aren’t many but they exist. They should not affect your experience at all, my bug testers didn’t even notice them.

No shadows. This is not a bug, but it’s not very pretty. When I can find a satisfactory way to color the vertices/apply shadows, I will.

Scrunched textures. The editor is to blame here, right now there’s nothing to do about it.

Texture errors. In some of the maps, there is chance that you run out of texture memory. That will result in some missing textures on your guns/hands, nothing major.

No sky. The graphic plug-in’s fault. If your computer is up for it, download a more demanding plugin that will show everything correctly. I recommend Glide64 Napalm: http://glide64.emuxhaven.net/

The final level slot can not be accessed. An eleventh map was not finalized for the pack, thus it remains empty. There’s nothing secret or hidden here, so don’t bother trying to beat Aztec on 007 with max stats while only using your slapper, attempting to unlock a bonus map. There is none. Trust me.

Bad placement of guns? Look at the mini maps and create your own with this tool:

REVISIONS
===============================================

Version 1.1

— Customized intro logos, which originally crashed on console, have been edited
to display correctly. There is still an issue with the «GoldenEye CS Pack» logo,
where if you watch the entire Bond barrel walk sequence, it won’t appear on screen.

— An erroneous clipping tile in the level Glock was corrected to allow travel on
the large ramp.

— Textures were setup to use hit types, which better represent the material types.

Version 1.2

— Updated memory allocations of each map.

— Deleted a bad spawn point in the Dust2Long level.

— Corrected some texturing issues in multiple maps.

— Modified the pools in Poolday for added realism.

— Edited one weapon pickup ID in the Aim map.

Monkeyface, that is me, I ported the original maps and spent countless hours getting
everything to work…

THE ORIGINAL MAPS ARE NOT MADE BY ME.
The only reason that I don’t include the original creators is because I don’t know
their names. Every other version spells out different author.

VERY SPECIAL THANKS goes out to SubDrag, for helping me a great deal with this project.

ADDITIONAL THANKS to Wreck, for fixing the logos for console play, editing textures to
use hit types, correcting a clipping error in Glock, adjusting textures in some maps,
removing a bad spawn point in Dust2Long, and updating setup files and clipping.

Even more special thanks goes out to the team behind the Goldeneye Setup Editor, this
project would literally not exist without your program.

The people over at shootersforever.com, thanks for helping me and being a very creative
community.

de_museum

Museum 3rd Most
Downloaded Map of All Time!
5/03
Check it out: de_museum holds the honor of being the most requested
original 3rd-party map for CounterStrike. Now only the remake maps
de_dust2003 and cs_assault2001 beat it out in the top ten list at cscentral.com.
At over 64,000 downloads (and tens of thousands more through the CS
Central map pack) this little baby has made me one proud daddy!

PC Gamer Magazine
Distributes Museum!
2/02
That’s
right, Museum gets a big boost in circulation this month in the 375,000
issues
of PC Gamer Magazine. PC Gamerthe largest PC games
magazine in the worldhas chosen the CS Central Map Pack for
distribution on the March issue CD-ROM. So congrats to my fellow
mappers and thank you once again to all the Museum fans for making
this map so popular!

New! Museum Movies

Move
over SpielbergTheropod-X has learned how to make Counter-Strike
movies! Moments ago I finished a 40 second trailer featuring flybys
and stills from Museum. If you don’t play Counter-Strike or simply
can’t get enough of Museum, download this video and check it out.
Just click one of the links on the left to download and play.

Museum Downloaded over 50,000 Times!
DE_MUSEUM
was first released in the CS CENTRAL map-pack just before Christmas.
Since that time the map-pack,
which includes 7 other high-quality Counter-Strike levels, has been
downloaded by some fifty thousand eager gamers. In addition,
DE_MUSEUM is one of the most downloaded maps today. As of Feb. 6,
the level moved up to 9th place in CSCENTRAL.COM’s top ten most
downloaded maps with over 4,300 downloads. Thanks everyone!

New! Map Overview Image
You
can already view map overviews with Valve’s Half-Life
TV, and with the release of Counter-Strike 1.4, overviews come
to all spectator views in the game. To take advantage of map
overviews though, you need a map overview image and a description
file. Download the .zip,
uncompress these two files and place them in the
«overviews» folder in your cstrike directory.

And
to aid in strategy-planning, I created a top-view of the level based
on the overview image. Check it out.

What is a WAD?
A
WAD is a collection of images called textures used by
3D artists to give the appearance of texture, color and surface to
objects rendered on a computer. In the case of DE_MUSEUM, I had to
create surfaces that resembled wood, stone, doors, windows, signs,
and dinosaur bones. Many of these textures started with digital
camera photos.

One
of the first things I did when I began the de_museum project was go
on a photo shoot. There are many historic buildings constructed in
classical styles on the East Coast. Our city courthouse was a good
photo subject for textures and designs that would be appropriate for
a classical museum design. I took many photos here that served as a
foundation for some of the textures seen in de_museum. I’ll post
more about texture creation soon.

Museum Textures to be
Released
Call
me crazy, but I plan to give away the textures used to create
DE_MUSEUM. Check back here for their release in the next few
weeks…and think of it as my way of giving back.

Night Vision Goggles?
If
there’s enough support, I hope to create a variant of de_museum
that supports NVG. There will be light switches, of course, and a
new sky.

New Web Site &
More Updates Coming Soon
With
this new design and format I hope to be able to add information
about how de_museum and 3D models in general are constructed. In
addition, I’ll keep you up-to-date on this and other 3D design
projects. Thanks for stopping by. =)

Mansion CS 1.6 map — creation history, who made it, balance, how to play on Mansion CS 1.6

Igor Larionov talks about the great location.

Ever since the first beta tests, Counter-Strike mapmakers have adhered to the rule “hard is not good”. CS has always valued simple, sometimes even primitive maps that are easy to remember in just a few rinks. Therefore, the most popular location in the history of the shooter is the unpretentious Dust2.

Mansion is considered the benchmark for simplicity in Counter-Strike. This is a simple map, consisting of only one house and a small area near it. Players were happy to shoot at the location back in 1999 in the beta version of the shooter — and they are still doing it. It was the simple and memorable structure of Mansion that allowed it to become the greatest map in the history of CS.

Mansion is the first map in CS history. It was created by a student in just a couple of days

In 2022, Mansion turned, scary to say, 23 years old. She appeared back in Counter-Strike Beta in 1999. At that time, locations were not created for years, and large studios were not engaged in polishing them. Everything worked on the pure enthusiasm of the fans.

Counter-Strike was developed by Min «Gooseman» Lee and Jess «Cliffe» Cliff. The guys worked on modifications for Quake 2 until they got acquainted with the Half-Life game released in 1998. At that time, the shooter was incredibly popular, but they fell in love with it not for the multiplayer, but for the single player campaign — at that time, the story of Gordon Freeman struck with direction and an unbanal plot. Cliff and Lee, on the other hand, are more fans of multiplayer games, so they hit on the idea of \u200b\u200bcreating a separate mod for the game — this was released in 1999 Half-Life SDK.

The beta version of Counter-Strike was developed in amateur conditions. But Jess Cliff understood that the game needed interesting and thoughtful maps — for this he turned to third-party mapmakers. The developer sent out a ton of applications to at least some famous designers who created locations for other games. There were not many answers — few people wanted to work on cards for a completely new incomprehensible modification.

One of the mapmakers who responded was 21-year-old Swede Magnus Lind. At that time, he studied at the University of Örebro, and in his spare time he created maps. Like Lee and Cliff, the guy loved Quake 2 and created locations for the shooter from time to time. None of his maps ever made it to the official release of the game, but it was Quake that made Magnus love the level design. With the release of the map editor for Half-Life, the Swede left Quake and switched to a new game.

Magnus was mastering a new utility, creating locations for another Half-Life modification — Team Fortress Classic. His most famous work is the SpyHard map, which the community didn’t like much, but Jess Cliff was hooked. It was thanks to her that he wrote to Magnus, offering to work on Counter-Strike. The Swede refused the letter, citing a session at the university, but after three hours he changed his mind and agreed. Thus began work on the Mansion.

Jess Cliff

Mapmaker postponed his exams and devoted all his free time to the map. As Magnus later said, because of Mansion he even had problems at the university. Work on the first version of the map took the Swede several hard days — time was limited, because Cliff demanded that the location be completed before the release of Counter-Strike Beta. Of course, in such a short period of time it was impossible to create a polished map, but it was impossible to delay the release of the beta. Mansion became the first official location in CS — it was here that the first closed tests took place even before the official release.

On June 19, 1999, Mansion appeared in Counter-Strike Beta along with three more maps — Siege, Prison and Wpndepot. No bombs or bombsites, just hostage levels. Locations were chosen in the order of the competition — Jess Cliff and Min Li themselves played on all the proposed maps and evaluated them. Magnus Lind understood that Mansion was not yet ready for a comfortable game. He believed that his card was chosen simply because of the lack of adequate competition.

And in a way he was right.

The location was terribly primitive and unbalanced. All the walls were shot through, playing for an attack is a pain

Now Mansion has a nostalgic vibe in the KCC, but on release the map was really terribly raw. Here there was no complex structure, various forks and tricky positions. Only absolutely symmetrical location for fast and fierce firefights.

Pool Day is our childhood favorite card. Do you know why her CS:GO release was canceled 2 hours before the release?

Magnus understood all the problems of the map created in a couple of days, but he thought that even with a lot of errors, it was still very fun to play on it. The father of Counter-Strike Min Li was of the same opinion:

“Mansion was our very first map. I loved her very much, because she perfectly embodied the basic scenario of the release of the hostages. During the very first beta, we just didn’t have much of a choice. They sent us quite a few cards then, and we actually accepted any that was not an empty box. So we enjoyed working with Magnus.»

The location was so unpretentious that all the important positions and passages on it can be counted on the fingers of one hand. So, Mansion consisted of:

● A two-story mansion with rooms similar to each other, a balcony and a bunch of windows. There, on the second floor, there was a spawn of two hostages (the third one appeared on the first floor) and terrorists;

● Spawn counter-terrorists behind a high fence from the building;

● Open yard with chicken coop, swimming pool and small bushes;

● Sewers leading from the CT spawn to the mansion. Everyone hated this pass — the players who used it were instantly branded as rats and noobs. In some versions, modders even deliberately blocked the passage through the sewers in the map editor.

But the primitive structure was far from Mansion’s main problem, on the contrary, many were attracted by lightning-fast gameplay. But what really annoyed me was the absolutely cardboard walls of the building. All obstacles in the mansion were easily shot through, so the players could very well never see their opponents for the whole round — and still lose.

Caesers spent no less nerves because of the mediocre balance of the map. It was too easy for the terrorists to defend the building thanks to good spawn points and plenty of windows — ideal positions for snipers. Counter-terrorists, on the other hand, sometimes found it difficult to even just approach the mansion, let alone win the round. Open positions and lack of shelters turned every assault on the house into torture — even grenades did not really save the situation.

At the same time, Mansion also had some very interesting design solutions that made the card stand out from its competitors for the better. There was a light switch in each room of the mansion — players could turn the lights on and off at any time. And on the CT spawn there were cameras that allowed the special forces to monitor some positions. Not Rainbow Six Siege, of course, but quite acceptable for that time.

Mansion has been removed from the game twice. For the first time — already in the second version of the beta

Beta Mansion did not stay in the official version of Counter-Strike for long. Already in the second version of the beta, which was released after 2 months, the map was removed from the map pool. At that time, CS already had its first fans, and with them the first negative reviews. The developers listened to them, adding more complex, balanced and beautiful maps to the game. Mansion did not find a place among them.

This decision hit Magnus Lind’s ego hard. He did not want his map to be forgotten so quickly, so he pushed his studies into the background and took up the global polishing of Mansion. This time, the Swede spent much more time improving the location than creating it. Magnus made the map more visually pleasing and worked on the player spawns — this was enough for Mansion to return to the game already in Beta 3.0.

The history of the legendary map of Italy. The creator was inspired by the movie with De Niro and brought cute chickens to CS!

But the main problems of the level have not disappeared. This is still a chamber map, which was not easy to radically improve. Plus, by that time, more and more mapmakers offered developers their locations, which played many times better than Mansion.

Around the same time, Counter-Strike introduced the bomb mode, which will eventually become the main one. Dust, Nuke, Prodigy were added to the game — maps with a complex structure and much more thoughtful balance. In such a company, Mansion looked very poor, so it’s already with the release of Beta 4.0, the location completely disappeared from Counter-Strike and has not appeared in any major version of the shooter.

This time Magnus put up with the removal of his favorite project. He knew all the ins and outs of the Mansion, but he couldn’t work on improving the map and studying at the university at the same time. In 1999, he also worked on level design for the game Tzar: The Burden of the Crown (in the Russian localization «Fire and Sword»), after which he left the gaming industry.

The map was adored in computer clubs, and a fan even made it a remake

Thanks to the bomb-planting mode, Counter-Strike became the main online shooter on the PC in a couple of years. Players enjoyed running around Inferno, Dust2 and Nuke, holding tournaments there and planning complex tactics. But for a full-fledged match in this mode, 10 people were needed, and it is desirable that the players of the same team be able to communicate with each other. Most often, it was not possible to assemble a full-fledged lobby, and the Caesers played on simpler maps designed exclusively for shooting.

The Mansion was perfect for this type of entertainment. She disappeared from the official map pool, but became a legend in computer clubs. The players gathered in the «computers», uttered the legendary phrase «Go Mansion, I created» and plunged into the action with lightning speed. Yes, there was no question of any balanced game. Yes, often the round for the player ended within a couple of seconds after it began. Yes, it was the most primitive location. But for that, they loved her.

Although Mansion never officially appeared in Counter-Strike, the map’s popularity inspired other mapmakers to create remakes. The most famous of them is Estate. The map was created by David Marsh, a CS fan who often played shooter games with friends. Once he stumbled upon Mansion, but after the first round he saw all the shortcomings of the location and decided that he would create a more beautiful and interesting version.

David made the map more SWAT-friendly, removed the fountain in the middle of the courtyard, and redid the main building. Mapmaker never thought that his card would officially appear in the game, but he showed it to Jess Cliff anyway. To the surprise of many, in CS Beta 6.5 Estate became part of the map pool. She stayed there much longer than Mansion (until the full release of Counter-Strike), but did not reach the same frenzied popularity. Most of the fans still gathered on the old map.

Estate

Now Mansion is a Counter-Strike cultural asset

Mansion has been out of the map pool for a very long time, but the map still feels better than many current maps. Servers with location fans are still alive in CS 1.6, and in CS:GO sometimes there are publics with different versions of the level. Mansion is a perfect example of how a map survives thanks to a loving fan base, even despite the bad attitude from the developers.

New versions of Mansion constantly appear in the Steam Workshop: autumn, New Year, night. The map is very easy to upgrade, and modders take advantage of it.

The history of the legendary Office card. Valve bought it from a 16-year-old emigrant from Russia, the hostages were changed 3 times

A few years ago, Mansion was even recreated on the Unreal Engine 4 engine. In 1999, the CCs never dreamed of such a schedule.

Only Mansion in real life can be cooler than this — and this is also possible! The world is full of different arenas for paintball and laser tag, decorated in the style of the famous map. One of these locations is located in the Kazakh city of Kyzylorda.

* * *

The history of Mansion is amazing and in many ways illogical. Unfinished, unbalanced, created in just a couple of days, the map has become the greatest.
