Games with joystick pc: PC Games That Are Better With A Controller

PC Games That Are Better With A Controller

A keyboard and mouse configuration is suited for many PC games, yet it is intuitive to use a controller with specific genres such as sports games, racing titles, and fighters. There are pros and cons to both control schemes, depending on what style of game is being played at a given time.

RELATED: Biggest PC Games By File Size, Ranked

There aren’t any first-person shooter (FPS) games on this list, since they are (arguably) easier with a keyboard and mouse. That being said, we have updated this list with 5 more titles that are better played using a controller, as opposed to a mouse and keyboard.

Updated on December 24, 2021 by Mark Sammut: Once upon a time, console games, especially those hailing from Japan, stayed on their home devices. As the years rolled by and publishers realized that maybe they shouldn’t ignore a huge potential audience, PC ports started to become commonplace. Nowadays, it isn’t that unusual for a JRPG or even a Sony exclusive to make its way to PC. While these games usually implement keyboard and mouse support, that doesn’t mean they provide an equal experience to a pair of joysticks. In some cases, a PC game is just a controller game.

23/23 Forza Horizon 5

Most racing games generally play better with a controller than a keyboard or mouse. For racing sims, a quality wheel is the way to go, but the same doesn’t always hold true for arcade racers. When driving the fastest cars in Forza Horizon 5, players might find themselves most comfortable with a controller as the vehicles tend to be easier to direct.

Forza Horizon 5 is a relaxing game with quite a bit of downtime as players will spend a significant amount of time driving through Mexico while admiring the vistas. A controller fits the tone and pacing of the game well since it allows users to sit back and chill more readily.

22/23 Yakuza 0

Yakuza 0 doesn’t hide the fact that it is meant to be experienced with a controller as one of the first things the game does is throw out a disclaimer suggesting as much. A keyboard and mouse set-up should work fine for exploration and most of the mini-games, but controllers are better suited to the beat-’em-up combat.

Yakuza 0 is a delightfully quirky open-world game with a gripping storyline that serves as a strong introduction to this long-running series. So, pick up a controller and step into Kiryu and Majima’s shoes.

21/23 Psychonauts 2

Psychonauts 2 can be seen as a stand-in for platformers in general, particularly 3D ones. For the most part, these games benefit from the more precise movement provided by an analog stick, while they usually are designed to utilize a controller’s buttons as intuitively as possible.

RELATED: Beginner Tips For Psychonauts 2 You Need To Know

Psychonauts 2 goes one step further by including a combat system that requires quick reflexes and the incorporation of a Psi-Powers wheel, both things that feel better through a controller.

20/23 Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Released on PC in December 2021, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a polarizing port. Putting aside its other issues, the JRPG works well enough with a keyboard and mouse, in the sense that there isn’t input delay and the characters feel responsive. However, reaching this level requires remapping the keyboard and mouse layout since the default settings are quite unusual and unintuitive. Permitting someone is willing to take a few minutes to remap the buttons, FF7 Remake is entirely manageable without a controller.

That said, it is still slightly better with a controller. The action RPG was designed for the PS4, and it shows. The combat is tailor-made for a controller’s button layout, and it just feels «right.» Most JRPGs that are ported to PC are usually better with a controller.

19/23 Rocket League

With enough practice, any person can master a control scheme; however, some require fewer hours. Rocket League is fine with a keyboard and mouse or a controller, but most people tend to lean towards the latter due to the game’s legacy as a console title.

Beyond that, Rocket League‘s driving is unlocked entirely with a controller as, ultimately, a keyboard can’t quite match an analog stick’s 360° freedom. The controller is also superior for aerial play, which is a pretty big deal in Rocket League.

18/23 Monster Hunter World (Melee)

When playing Monster Hunter World on PC, the best control option is dependent on a character’s build. If playing as a ranged fighter, the keyboard and mouse are generally better since they provide more precise aiming. Conversely, the controller shines when utilizing a melee build, particularly when it comes to dishing out combos.

Monster Hunter started life on consoles, and this legacy influences World. These are games designed with controllers in mind, although Capcom did a good job of making the keyboard and mouse a valid alternative.

17/23 Hades

Another case that is somewhat situational, Hades is better with a controller most of the time. Certain weapons (Adamant Rail) are much better with a keyboard and mouse, especially for those players who wish to remove auto-aim.

RELATED: Greek Gods Not Included In Hades

When not using ranged weapons in Hades, a controller is the most reliable way to go. Movement and reflexes are critical for survival in Supergiant’s game, and Zagreus’ odds go up when utilizing a controller. Luckily, Hades is awesome with either control method.

16/23 Strider

Playing Strider with a keyboard and mouse just feels weird. There’s no other way to describe it. This side-scrolling action platformer was built head to toe on the premise of the classic Capcom arcade title, and it definitely shows up in the gameplay. Core fundamentals are still at play, and that means using a controller to enjoy them.

The running, jumping, and slashing are fast-paced and sometimes require quick reflexes in order to avoid damage and/or death. With a keyboard and mouse, too many things can go wrong too quickly. It’s best to stick to a controller where reflex and muscle memory are able to keep up with what’s happening on screen.

15/23 Sonic Generations

More often than not, platformers shine the brightest when joysticks are involved. It doesn’t matter if it is a 2d or 3d platformer, a game from this genre should ideally be played with a controller.

Sonic Generations is a prime example of the importance of controllers. While the game is just about playable with a keyboard and mouse, the experience is nowhere near as enjoyable. Sonic Generations is harder on a keyboard and mouse, leading to more mistakes to be made that hamper Sonic’s speed. Just pick up a controller to keep around for whenever it is time to play a platformer.

14/23 Batman: Arkham Series

While playing the Arkham games with a keyboard and mouse is possible (and perfectly fine), it does fall short of a controller in a few key areas. The game relies heavily on auto-targeting mechanics which makes controllers a natural fit for the gameplay, but that’s not all.

Where a controller truly shines is during combat sequences. The free-flowing fighting system relies on memory and reflexes best served by the close-knit components of a controller. It’s a bit harder to pull off complex and elongated combos with a keyboard and mouse.

13/23 Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow

The fast-paced nature of Lords of Shadow means that it’s better suited to gamepad control as opposed to a keyboard and mouse. Since it isn’t a game where combat consists of gunplay and precise aiming, the player can hack and slash at their leisure.

Plus, Castlevania has a long and storied past primarily on consoles where controllers were the method of play. This means the franchise has largely evolved behind that style, even as it branches outward into 3D territory.

12/23 Halo: Spartan Assault & Spartan Strike

Having Halo: The Master Chief Collection on PC has been a blessing, if for no other reason than for gamers to take advantage of the coveted mouse and keyboard combo. However, other games in the franchise fare much better on the controller, including both Spartan Assault and Strike.

RELATED: Ridiculously Long PC Games (& How Long They Take To Beat)

The top-down isometric view of the game means precision shooting isn’t nearly as necessary as it would be in an FPS title. A controller is the perfect mechanism by which to control the character while taking advantage of its excellent move/shoot system. While a keyboard/mouse combo isn’t the worst thing in the world, it’s also not as good as a gamepad.

11/23 Streets Of Rage 4

This one should come as no surprise. After all, the Streets of Rage franchise started out on the 16-Bit Sega Genesis console way back in the 1990s, and there weren’t very many PC fighting games of its kind at the time. Streets of Rage 4 has proven to be an excellent follow-up to the original trilogy.

Not only does it perfectly capture the feel of the original games, but it introduces several new control mechanics to spice things up. Playing the game on a keyboard is simply not enjoyable, nor should it be. Plug in a controller and experience classic button-mashing mayhem the way it was intended.

10/23 Any Assassin’s Creed Game

The Assassin’s Creed franchise isn’t known for its sophisticated control design. A keyboard and mouse are unnecessary when playing a game series like Assassin’s Creed. It’s neither a first-person shooter nor is it a role-playing game with complicated controls. Combat is simple, and many of the missions involve basic tasks like trailing or assassinating. After trying both peripherals, it becomes abundantly clear that Assassin’s Creed is best played with a controller.

9/23 Middle-Earth: Shadow Of War

In a game that requires precise movements for stealth, controls have to be its strong suit. It’s a shame that fighting someone near a wall creates camera issues that take away from the game. Middle-earth: Shadow Of War‘s controls are less complex than Batman: Arkham Knight, but more complex than Batman: Arkham City.

Putting the bow’s aiming aside, a controller undoubtedly works better for Middle-earth: Shadow Of War.

8/23 Grand Theft Auto 5

It is debatable which peripheral is better suited for Grand Theft Auto 5 because it depends on the task at hand. When shooting and driving at the same time, the feel of the keyboard and mouse is superior.

If a player is driving a vehicle or flying an aircraft, however, a gamepad is the better peripheral for GTA 5. In most cases, the controller beats the keyboard and mouse, unless someone is playing with certain mods.

7/23 Rise Of The Tomb Raider

Using WSAD on a keyboard is inferior to a controller’s thumbstick when playing Rise of the Tomb Raider. The game lets the player perform basic movements for swimming, wall climbing, and walking/running. There isn’t a wide variety of spells or weapons to switch between.

Weapons like the bow, shotgun, rifle, and pistol are easily equipped with the directional pad (D-Pad). A keyboard and mouse also work, but many users prefer the controller for its comfort and accessibility.

6/23 Dark Souls

In a difficult game like Dark Souls, you need the optimal peripheral device. Depending on what you’re most proficient at using, Dark Souls can be better with a keyboard and mouse or a controller. This is not an MMORPG that requires key bindings or macros. There are enough buttons on the controller for a seamless playthrough (excluding all the times you die).

If you’re like MezzPlays, you beat Dark Souls using a Guitar Hero controller without taking damage! Don’t blame Dark Souls because of your controller, but rather its painstaking difficulty.

5/23 FIFA

It could be said that most sports video games play better with a controller. A keyboard and mouse is awkward unless someone seldom picks up a controller. FIFA supports most major gamepads and controllers, however, the franchise’s PC releases have a history of not being directly compatible with PlayStation’s DualShock.

The takeaway is that FIFA 20 doesn’t require precise mouse movements, and it can feel counterintuitive to use a keyboard and mouse.

4/23 Cuphead

As one of the most difficult 2D games in the history of the PC, Cuphead is a challenge because of its speedy animations and grueling boss fights. You’ll be dumbfounded by this 193os inspired run and gun video game.

RELATED: Reasons To Play The Sims on PC (& Reasons To Play On Console)

We know Cuphead is difficult, but which is better; a keyboard and mouse or controller? This game may have an antiquated appearance, but it does use modern controls. Parrying, dashing, locking in place, and using Super Art have assigned buttons. Cuphead‘s controls aren’t that complicated, so it doesn’t require a keyboard and mouse. It boils down to preference for this game.

Keyboard and mouse might be the old standards of the PC platform, but they’re by no means the only way to game on a computer. Native support for Xbox controllers and a wide range of other dual-analog controllers are now commonplace, and sometimes recommended, for PC games. Whether you’re cracking out that fancy Xbox One Elite, or picking from our list of recommended controllers, these are 15 big PC titles you should be playing with a gamepad.

Cuphead

Don’t let its beautiful cartoon visuals fool you — Cuphead is a punishing bullet-hell platformer in which the slightest mistimed move will get you killed. As such, you’re going to need the precision of a traditional controller, particularly one with a very good d-pad. Playing Cuphead with a controller will give you much finer control over your movement, and will make it far easier to jump, shoot and launch special attacks all at once.

Batman: Arkham Knight

Batman: Arkham Knight is one of those third-person action games that just never quite seem to translate well to a keyboard-and-mouse setup. It’s here that a gamepad will offer better camera and character control. Full analog movement should prove useful for the game’s various stealth sections as well as the versatile Batmobile that’s capable of switching into «combat mode» with a full 360-degree-turning radius.

Rivals of Aether

Rivals of Aether is a fighting game that models itself very closely on the unique gameplay found in the Super Smash Bros. games with a big focus on competitive play. As such, a controller with two analog sticks will be key for anyone looking to dive deep into the first worthy alternative to Nintendo’s venerable fighting series. And if you’re super-serious about it, you might want to use these drivers that let you use a GameCube controller on the Steam version of the game.

Dark Souls III

The entire Dark Souls action-RPG series is best played with a controller, and Dark Souls III is no exception. If you’ve managed to make it through Dark Souls and Dark Souls II on a PC without a controller,  we’re very impressed, but you could be making it so much easier on yourself! You’ll find many instances where controlling the speed of your walk with the analog stick to be invaluable for sneaking up on enemies or being able to get through menus in a flash in the middle of combat.

Final Fantasy XIV

Square Enix’s massively multiplayer online RPG is constantly evolving with new content, and whether you’re just jumping in or are starting a new character class, it’s worth your time to explore this game with a controller. MMOs might not seem like a good fit for controllers, but Final Fantasy XIV was built with them in mind. They’ve made it incredibly easy to use and swap between the large list of combat skills so you can nail that rotation and pump out big damage.

Nier: Automata

Nier: Automata is a game made with consoles in mind, which means it was made for a controller. A lot of the functions that are relatively effortless on a controller can be awkward to pull off with a keyboard and mouse. Dodging requires a double key press of W, A, S, or D and camera sensitivity is simply not calibrated for use with a mouse. The game also launches into top-down shooter segments occasionally, where the lack of analog movement can be sorely missed.

Analog control is a serious must for any driving game. The smash hit Rocket League is an online competitive mashup of racing and soccer (or «football,» if you prefer), so you’ll want whatever edge you can get. Street Fighter V

Street Fighter has been the standard bearer of the fighting game genre, and it didn’t get there by being a simple game. Characters have moves that require unique button combos that can be easier to pull off with a diamond-face button layout and a traditional directional-pad (or, if you’re more serious, a dedicated fight stick). In particular, it would be tricky to input a quarter circle or full 360 rotation using just a keyboard, compared to using a gamepad. If you want to get competitive in the game’s online modes, you won’t want to be stuck with that handicap.

Brothers — A Tale of Two Sons is a game that uses a gamepad’s two analog sticks to control the titular brothers independently around the world — one stick controls the older brother and the other stick controls the younger brother. TOP 10 joystick games on PC

As an experienced PC gamer, I can say that a keyboard and a mouse are enough to comfortably play most games. Moreover, some games are only designed for them, and it can be extremely difficult to adapt them to a different control system. But it happens differently — some projects are made exclusively for joystick control, and trying to play them with the help of an inseparable keyboard + mouse pair is a rare masochism. What projects are we talking about? AT 99 cases out of 100 are games made for consoles. And if the developers claim that they have successfully ported their creations, and they no longer need a gamepad, do not believe it. No, you will most likely succeed in playing, but with a joystick it will be much more comfortable, you can trust me.

What else do you need a joystick for? Of course, for simulators. Even those that were originally made for the PC are still not very comfortable when playing with the keyboard. This is especially true for aircraft and space sims — the mouse is most often not used in them, and the keyboard is simply not convenient. And if this is an online toy and you are playing against a live opponent… Believe me, if this is an experienced player using a gamepad, then you have almost no chance. On that note, we’re moving on to our TOP 10 joystick games on PC.

ATTENTION!
This TOP is dedicated to games on the gamepad. If you are interested in games for a real joystick, then see this article.

10. Street Fighter IV

This fighting game was developed for slot machines and consoles. Of course, when it was ported to PC, the controls were adapted to the keyboard, but it is much more convenient to play it with a gamepad. Various combos, super combos and focus attacks are much more convenient to perform on the joystick, if only because it is more difficult to miss and press the wrong key here. The fighting game itself is quite good — a very good combat system, characters, each of which has its own fighting style, and even some semblance of a plot. Although, it’s better not to even try to understand what’s going on here. After all, compared to local history, even the showdown between Scorpion and Sub Zero will seem to you an incredibly deep drama. On the other hand, who cares about story in a game that’s only meant to blow off steam? So, fight to your heart’s content.

9. Resident Evil 6

Another game from the series, which is traditionally considered a console game. And any part of this series, not only the last one, is best played using a gamepad. And do not believe the developers who say that the PC port is successful and no joystick is required! Of course, it is quite possible to pass Resident Evil 6 with only one keyboard and mouse. That’s just, it’s worth switching to a gamepad — and immediately the game becomes an order of magnitude more comfortable. If we talk about Resident Evil 6 itself (namely, this is how the name of the project is translated), then it turned out to be very spectacular, dynamic and, in some places, even frightening. Although it can’t be compared with the very first parts of the series in terms of the level of injected tension, a zombie jumping out of the darkness will definitely not bring you much joy. In general, the game is more action than horror, but it does not become less interesting for passing.

8. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

The last, at the moment, part of the famous series. Assassin’s Creed has always been ported to PC since the very first game. And, to be honest, it even went quite successfully. But it would not be on this list if the keyboard here was a full-fledged replacement for the gamepad. That all parkour movements, that fights (in particular, various finishing moves) are much easier to do when playing with a joystick. It’s just easier to play with him. And, as already mentioned, with a gamepad it is much more difficult to miss and press the wrong key. If we talk about the game itself, then the focus, as always, is the showdown between the Order of the Templars and the Assassins. I don’t want to reveal the plot to you — I’ll only say that the main characters are the twins Evie and Jacob Fry, and the action takes place in London 19th century, during the Victorian era.

7. Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands

Few people need to introduce this game. Even if you are not familiar with this particular part, you have probably heard about the series about the adventures of the Prince of Persia. In terms of gameplay, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is a classic arcade action game (you can call it Action-adventure if you want), with a fair share of slashers. Why is this game on this list? Most of the acrobatic tricks that are here are much easier to do using a gamepad. And when it comes to fighting… Believe me, those fights that are easily passed with the help of a joystick will make you break your fingers when playing the keyboard. If we talk about the game itself and its plot, there is nothing particularly original here. Quite a classic story of the Prince, who once again saves the kingdom from the Sands of Time. And how this happens, you will find out for yourself.

6. Need for Speed: Most Wanted

Classic racing game with licensed cool cars, great music and police chases. And there is even a plot here, although it is only needed to explain why we are once again participating in the race. This game, like most others, is easily played using the keyboard. But if you use a gamepad, then a certain level of immersion in what is happening on the screen immediately increases. I don’t know what this is connected with, but it’s more fun and interesting to play on a gamepad than on a keyboard. Even better, of course, using the steering wheel, but this is for very aesthetes. If we talk about the game itself, then here we have the classic Need for Speed is a very interesting and dynamic arcade game about car racing. There are no scratches left on the cars, and the speeds are such that it is not entirely clear why your car does not take off above the road. In general, the typical arcade gameplay, which, nevertheless, is great for those who want to relax from the heart.

5. Ace Combat: Assault Horison

Series Ace Combat is a series of flight simulators about modern combat aircraft. As in any flight simulator, it is much more convenient to play here using a gamepad. The flight physics is very well done in the game, modern combat vehicles are worked out, both of the NATO armed forces and of Russian production. In total, there are almost 40 different types of aircraft — fighters, bombers, there are even helicopters. And on all this splendor you can fly. The game has a lot of advantages, to be sure, and it is interesting to pass it — that’s just, it’s better not to try to follow the plot. In my opinion, he is not particularly logical and reliable in the game. However, it’s up to someone who likes it. It is quite possible not to bother with history, but just fly. Thankfully this is really interesting.

4. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

This project is a reboot of the famous Castlevania series. The game takes place in supposedly medieval Europe. Why supposedly? Well, because everything here is fantasy through and through. Castlevania belongs to the slasher genre — that is, in the process of passing we exterminate tons of living and not very opponents, and we do it in close combat. The game was released on consoles in 2010, and on PC only three years later, in 2013. And although it was ported to PC for a long time, playing on the keyboard is still not convenient here. What can you do, Castlevania is a classic console slasher, and it is much more convenient to play it with a gamepad. Otherwise, the game is good, and great for blowing off steam. So good luck to you in the fantasy Middle Ages.

3. Batman: Arkham Knight

Another great console action game. Great storyline, great graphics and many of the most famous characters from comics. And the control, which is sharpened for the gamepad, and in such a way that it is not convenient to implement it on the keyboard. No, they tried, of course, but if you yourself compare exactly where it is more convenient to cut down five opponents at a time — controlling with a gamepad, or using a keyboard — then the choice will be clearly in favor of the gamepad. If we talk about the game as a whole, it definitely deserves your attention, if only because it is one of the best comic book projects that have come out recently.

2. DmC Devil May Cry

Another slasher on our list, which is also a reboot of the series. The game is just incredibly good, and just as brutal. A story about the demons that enslaved humanity, and Dante, the Nephilim, who exterminates these demons with particular cruelty. Everything is done very beautifully, stylishly, and the videos, «filmed» on the game engine, will not leave anyone indifferent. The voice acting is also on the level — and the voices of the characters, and the special effects, and the music. One problem — playing the keyboard is not very comfortable. Your obedient servant managed to complete the game in this way, but honestly, everything is much easier here on the gamepad. It seems to be the same actions — and on the joystick you can control them an order of magnitude faster. In general, the gamepad is in your hands, and go ahead, have fun.

1. War Thunder

Online simulator about World War II vehicles.
