Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 2 isn’t fun now but that’s not the point
Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 2 is old, clunky and boring, but at the same time I am entranced by it. This is history I’m playing; the game is 18 years old. There’s nothing you can do short of remaking it that’s going to make it feel young and exciting again — and Wizards of the Coast tried that last year with Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance, and look how that turned out (clue: not well). So all those lumps and bumps I feel while playing it — all those things that have been smoothed by the many waves of action role-playing games since — I don’t mind them. In fact, I love them, because they’re what revisiting Dark Alliance 2 is all about.
Quick history lesson: Dark Alliance was an experiment, really, in bringing Dungeons & Dragons to console. Interplay didn’t want a slower, wordy adventure like BioWare’s Baldur’s Gate but something more suited to a console audience — something faster, something more action-packed. So it enlisted Snowblind Studios (which would go on to make something of a spiritual successor in The Lord of the Rings: War in the North — remember that? We gave it 4/10) to make one. There was reticence but when BG Dark Alliance came out in 2001, it was surprisingly well received, so a sequel was greenlit.
This time, however, the beloved Black Isle Studios would make it. This was the house of Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale and Fallout, a bonafide RPG legend, and its involvement added a layer of intrigue and excitement to the game. But Dark Alliance 2 would also be the last game Black Isle would release, with Interplay closing the studio and laying off all of the staff months before release, and cancelling a Dark Alliance 3 in the process. People from Black Isle would go on to form new studio Obsidian Entertainment thereafter. So there’s all this history wrapped up in the game.

Look at that intro — no it’s not the new Lord of the Rings series, it’s Dark Alliance 2! I hope you enjoy the part where I die because I’m standing in the fire right near the beginning of the game.
I didn’t.
There’s also history in the way it plays and the way it’s put together. This, really, was one of the first attempts to bring Dungeons & Dragons over to a console audience, whereas today, it’s commonplace — we’ve got all kinds of D&D-inspired games in that space. Would BioWare have made Knights of the Old Republic if Dark Alliance hadn’t worked (KOTOR was effectively a Star Wars D&D game), for example? I don’t know. That was the great console crossover moment for BioWare. And you can feel this kind of exploration of how D&D could work on consoles in Dark Alliance 2.
Abilities are greatly simplified, for instance. You’ve got a selection of them you can spend points on (pips, really) as you level up, making them stronger. You don’t get all that dizzying choice of D&D character advancement, so it greatly simplifies it all. It’s also, obviously, not turn-based, but built to be a button-mashing hack-and-slash, with some active abilities while others do sums behind the scenes.
And again, this is all commonplace now, but then it wasn’t, and that’s what makes Dark Alliance 2 feel so elbowy and awkward at times — that unrefined feeling of one kind of game being mashed into another but they’re both running at different BPMs. But somehow it works, and that’s a fascinating turning point for games like these.
You can play the game either alone or with someone else, sharing the same screen. I wish more games had local co-op.
There’s nothing like visible knicker straps to show you a game is from 2004.
But Dark Alliance 2 is unlikely to entertain you in 2022 if you have no history with it or no historical interest in it. The enemies are basic and unvaried, as are the maps, as are your move-sets. It feels like exactly what it is: old. I played it with my partner for a while — local co-op works fine by the way — and she looked distinctly unimpressed and confused as to why I was making her bother with it at all. She thought the game was intentionally taking the piss when we watched the old, low-res intro at the start (which probably belongs in a museum — and I mean that in a good way!).
And when she died within moments of us beginning and neither of us could work out how to resurrect her (we had to reload) she was pretty much ready to quit.
Also, I don’t know whether it’s the remaster’s fault or whether it’s the game’s foundational fault, but while the action runs smoothly at 4K (I’m presuming because that’s why my screen is), the cut-scenes do not and they’re jerky, too. The audio mix is off for voices as well, with some nice and loud while others are hard to hear. And there are button prompts in the menus that don’t seem to work at all. On top of that, there’s a general feeling of sluggishness when mashing attacks and moving around.
Whether or not you should play it depends on what Dark Alliance 2 means to you, though I should say that £30 is a ridiculous amount to ask for this. If you’re former Eurogamer and RPS writer Imogen Beckhelling and you remember playing Dark Alliance 2 with your nan — a piece I couldn’t stop thinking about while I was playing DA2 because it warms my heart — then yes, this remaster is for you.
On the other hand if you’ve no link to it, I’d probably give it a miss.

* Update (July 22, 2022) — It looks like the game has been patched on Xbox and the Red Fang Keep crash should be fixed.
Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance II was the original 2004 Xbox and Playstation 2 game that has been «updated» for modern consoles. After last year’s disappointing remake of Dark Alliance I, has developer Black Isle Studios done better this time around? Oh no. Let’s dive into this.
$30 and completely broken at launch
This port costs $30 which seems incredibly cool to me. When you load things up, you’re greeted with exactly the same pre-rendered CGI that greeted you in the original, even the character selection looks like a tangled mess taken straight from the first game’s DVD. Luckily, things are a lot cleaner after booting up. Textures and resolution are vastly improved from the original, and loading times are virtually non-existent. You will start by choosing one of the five classes. There are human barbarian, drow monk, dwarven rogue, moon elf necromancer, and human cleric to choose from. The game supports local multiplayer and is a genre of console RPG.
The controls are simple: A is your main attack, B is your spells, Y is jumps, and X is interactions. You can use the left bumper to replace face buttons with displayed spell slots, the right bumper is your block/parry, and your triggers are for energy and health potions. On the left side of the D-pad is your automap, the key to any good role-playing game. It can either fill the entire screen or hover to the right to help you find your way. The right joystick can rotate and control the camera zoom, and it all feels «good». The gameplay is incredibly simple, and it just doesn’t hold up after all these years. It might evoke nostalgia for fans of the original version, but with the aforementioned $30 price tag at launch, I doubt it’s ticklish enough to justify a purchase.
It’s getting worse
I played a hell of a lot away from the original version because I didn’t have a gaming PC at the time and couch gaming with my family was king. Compared to the first playground, it may take quite a bit, at least in my memory.
This game is already out and people are buying it, so while I wanted to wait for the promised patch, I felt like I should release this review. The game is completely broken on Xbox and most likely was on Playstation as well because this version was shelved at the last minute. On the first level, after about 10 minutes of play, you need to enter Red Fang Keep, and you can’t. The game loads for a second and crashes, for everyone.
The developer has promised that a patch is ready, so hopefully it will fix the situation, but please make sure you double check online before buying this game on the Xbox platform to make sure the patch is out. I’m going to rate the game as if it were, but be aware that the overall 2.0 score will be much lower if it’s not yet patched because you’ll spend $30 to play something for 10 minutes before it’s inevitable will break.
Another rough area is sound quality. There is crackling in the voice acting at times, which is annoying and hard to listen to.
It’s great that the game is fully voiced, but the low sample rate of it all can make it hard on the ears. The music, on the other hand, is still good, and although it doesn’t sound very good, it’s much better quality than voice recordings.
Although some things are better!
The game has 5 save slots, which at first glance seems normal, but this is not for each character, but for each account. Invariably, if you want to play all five characters over time, this limits you to one character if you want to avoid deleting entire playthroughs. The inventory system in the game works reasonably well with a full system of weapons, armor, and upgrades.
You’ll want to focus on upgrades that give you more spells/abilities. If you ignore them for too long whenever the experience-based leveling system puts +1, then the gameplay is pretty much just spamming the A button for hours and hours. You’ll want to figure out the left bumper’s quick spell system and how to use it, as it makes it much easier to use your power/spell when you have 4+ abilities to cycle through.
It should take about 12 hours to fully launch the game, or about 20 if you’re trying to find everything that can be done in the game. Multiply that by five if you want to try out every character and there’s a decent amount of very repetitive content here (when it works). The story is solid D&D, but the action just can’t keep up with it. It is constantly uncomfortable and stiff compared to modern titles.
In Conclusion
Can’t recommend this messy $30 game at launch with few ways to improve with only changes to the base resolution and frame rate, and plenty of ways to hack the game. Once everything is fixed and hopefully works better, it could be couch fun to play together, albeit only at a major sale. Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance II «remaster» is a big disappointment.
