Baldur’s gate ee: Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition on Steam

Review: Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition – Destructoid

Baldur’s Gate will forever be regarded as one of the classic PC RPGs. A lot of people never experienced it back in 1998, and it’s not exactly the best-looking game anymore. To complicate things, it can be a pain to get the old game to run on newer machines, even after GOG.com began selling the title.

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition not only remedies these issues, it also adds a good amount of new content, making it way easier to recommend to someone who previously missed out.

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition (Android, iPad, Mac, PC [reviewed])
Developer: Overhaul Games
Publisher: Beamdog / Atari
Release: November 28, 2012 (PC) / December 2012 (Android, iPad, Mac)
MSRP: $9.99 (Android, iPad) / $19.99 (Mac, PC)

The writing of Baldur’s Gate has always been one of its strongest aspects. The story remains unchanged and still holds up.

The main plot begins with bandits mysteriously trying to murder the main character in the midst of an iron shortage in the area. Enhanced Edition also includes the “Tales of the Sword Coast” expansion integrated into the main game. While the plot is good, I’ve always felt as if it were the characters and their interactions that really kept me going through the 50+ hours of gameplay.

Protip: Include Minsc in your party.

There were already a large amount of characters to recruit in the original game, but the Enhanced Edition adds three more into the mix: Rasaad the Monk, Neera the Wild Mage, and Dorn the Blackguard. Neera quickly became my favorite of the three and one of my favorite characters overall thanks to her unique spell, “Nahal’s Reckless Dweomer,” a last-ditch effort in which Neera chooses one of her other spells and attempts to cast it. However, this usually fails and the result is completely random; sometimes it’s great, sometimes it wipes out the entire party.

Rasaad and Dorn fit into the universe just fine and don’t feel as if they’re ham-fisted in for the sake of new content. You encounter all three new characters within the first two hours of gameplay, and just like with every other NPC, you can accept them into the party or refuse and continue without them. If they are in the party, they will occasionally feel the need to pester you and give you opportunities to ask about their history after resting or entering a new area. It’s nice, but it sometimes happens about three or four times in a row, which gets quite annoying.

The game itself runs on a better version of the Infinity Engine and boasts “over 400 improvements.” It definitely runs more smoothly, though there are still some issues with path finding. The user interface is also cleaner and easier to comprehend, though it is far from perfect. Overall, it feels less “janky” than the original, which will definitely be a boon to new players.

The AI in general is a bit hit-or-miss. You can tweak it to act according to preset actions, but sometimes there isn’t one that fits exactly what you want. If perhaps there were a way to set specific reactions to events, a la Dragon Age: Origins, then the AI for ranged combatants and mages would be much better.

There’s also a modified in-game tutorial to help explain the Dungeons & Dragons systems at play. It will seem tedious for anyone who has played similar games in the past, yet plenty of game systems go untouched in the tutorial. There are two very lengthy manuals as well, so I’d recommend checking them out if you’re confused.

The game also crashed on me once during the main campaign, and I’ve heard other reports of crashes during The Black Pits. Though you should be doing it anyway, save often! The game is hard enough; you don’t want to repeat a large segment of the game due to a crash.

Oh, did I neglect to mention that this game is brutally, soul-crushingly hard? Allow me: this game is brutally, soul-crushingly hard. There we go.

Character death isn’t permanent in most cases, but reviving a character requires traveling to a Temple and paying gold to bring them back. But if you take too long to fulfill an NPC’s quest, they might turn on you and try to murder you. On top of that, if your created character dies, it is officially game over.

Save always. Pause during fights. And, as Minsc would say, “There is strength in numbers, and I am two or three, at least!”

The biggest content addition is The Black Pits, an arena-based series of combat trials separate from the main game. It is possible to jump straight into The Black Pits without playing the main game, and it will assign you a party of six to play with. There are 15 arenas of increasingly difficult enemies to get through, which might sound like a complete chore at first.

Luckily, the witty writing is still in full effect in The Black Pits. The wizard Baeloth has taken you to these pits and grows continually interested in yet disgusted by your ability to put on a show for the crowd and slay the enemies. In between rounds, you’ll get the chance to rest and buy more items from vendors, each with a distinct personality and something to say about both Baeloth and the arena itself.

It’s a fun distraction from the main story and will take you a few hours to get through, depending on how well you handle yourself in the arena. It’s also fully voiced, as opposed to the spotty “sometimes voiced, sometimes not” nature of the main game.

Though it may be hard to tell from screenshots, Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition really has upped the visuals. Sure, they don’t look ultra spectacular, but when you go back and play the original, you’ll be shocked as to just how much of a difference there is. A large reason for the improved visuals is support for way more resolutions, including widescreen. The game looks better and you see more of it. Unless you zoom in. Don’t zoom in.

There are also new cutscenes, replacing the old 3D ones that most people would cringe at nowadays. These new cinematics are hand-drawn and though relatively infrequent and brief are a joy to witness. More character portraits and player voices round out this enhancement, both nice additions, especially if you’ve trod this ground before.

Baldur’s Gate was, is, and always will be an RPG classic. The writing is full of wit, the characters and their interactions are exceptional, and the tried-and-true D&D gameplay is deceivingly complex. Sure, there are some minor issues like character AI/pathing, overly chatty and intrusive party members, and the occasional crash, but they fall short of detracting from the overall RPG euphoria.

Whether you’ve run through the game multiple times or have always wanted to, it’s as easy as ever to recommend Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition to anyone.

history of Baldur’s Gate — from foundation to bloody catastrophe

19746
views

The release of Baldur’s Gate 3 from Larian Studios, the sequel to the legendary RPG series set in the Dungeons and Dragons universe, is approaching. Apparently, the new part will not continue the story of the Descendants of Bhaal, around which the plot of previous games revolved. Players will have to fight illithids, space alien-like telepaths that eat the brains of their victims. nine0003

The game is united with the rest of the series, first of all, by the place of action — the city of Baldur’s Gate, where the events of the original Baldur’s Gate, released back in 1998, unfolded. This city is an iconic location for the Forgotten Realms universe, the most popular and famous D&D world. While we are waiting for the game, let’s figure out how this fantasy metropolis works.

Fairoon

Baldur’s Gate is located on the western coast of the continent of Faerun, on the planet Abir-Toril. This is a traditional fantasy universe with fairy peoples, ancient races, mages, warriors, ancient gods and secret cults. nine0003

Over the course of its long history, the Forgotten Realms setting has grown with many additional books and adventures that describe different regions of Fairun, and even other continents of Toril: lands inspired by the Far East, Mesoamerica or Russia, the ominous Underdark, the mysterious elven islands and much more.

The west coast of Faerun is known as the Sword Coast and is the setting for many books and pre-made adventures in this

universe.
nine0002 But Baldur’s Gate refers to the «default» region, conditionally reminiscent of Western Europe during the late Middle Ages and the Northern Renaissance. This part of Faerûn, which includes Neverwinter, Icewind Dale, and other locations known even to those who have never picked up tabletop Dungeons and Dragons thanks to video games, is simply called «North».

Specifically, Baldur’s Gate is located on the southern border of the region. It is the center of trade between the northern kingdoms, and the wealthy southern states — Amn, the setting of Baldur’s Gate 2, Calimshan and other countries inspired by the Near and Middle East. The themes of commerce and wealth pop up regularly in games and stories related to Baldur’s Gate, although it is not yet clear whether they will appear in the upcoming project. nine0003

Baldur’s Gate in Baldur’s Gate

Founding and tax revolution

The exact date of the founding of Baldur’s Gate has never been stated, but the city seems to have come into being around the 1060s in Dale Reckoning, the primary calendar used in Faerûn. The dates in it are counted from the peace treaty between people and elves, which marked the beginning of the wide settlement of mankind. For comparison, most of the adventures in the current fifth edition, and most likely the upcoming game, take place in the late 1400s, that is, 4 centuries later. nine0003

Before the Gate was formally founded, this site was home to another settlement, Gray Haven, a small haven for pirates, smugglers, and adventurers. At first, the main occupation of the inhabitants was to lure passing ships onto the rocks and rob them.

Later, the most cunning merchants, to whom the inhabitants of the Harbor sold goods obtained in this way, founded a settlement on a hill overlooking the harbor. They had their own market, and the town began to grow slowly. But as is often the case in Faerun, it was a hero who led him to true greatness — Captain Balduran. nine0003

An explorer and adventurer, Balduran traveled the world and amassed great wealth, which he spent lavishly every time he returned to his native Greyharbour. Among other things, he decided to “gift” the city with fortified walls. But having given the necessary orders and issued the required amount, Balduran set off on a new voyage, from which he never returned. The implementation of his project was taken over by farmers and merchants who settled on the hill, who decided to wall their own part of the city, leaving the Harbor as such without protection. nine0003

Problems began after the end of construction, when the inhabitants of the hill proclaimed themselves the rulers of the settlement, and, more importantly, introduced a tax for passing inside the city walls, that is, for access to the market. The sea captains, many of whom knew Balduran himself, resented the misrepresentation of an old comrade’s dream. Together, their teams stormed the walls and captured the city.

They renamed the settlement Baldur’s Gate, after the city gate that started the conflict, and named the four most experienced captains rulers. Those, in turn, pardoned and negotiated with the defeated merchants, so that the rebellion did not cause long-term harm to commerce. nine0003

All these events were called the Tax Revolution, and the new rulers took the titles of Dukes. Initially, it was given rather as a mockery, but over time, the captains and their descendants got used to the position of the nobility, turned into the ruling patriciate of the city, and even introduced their own taxes, on which they built the outer ring of walls in accordance with Balduran’s idea.

The rise of the city and its rulers was facilitated by the fact that, parallel to the south of the Gate, another trading state, Amn, was developing. Together they bridged the gap between the North and the South, growing rich in trade along the coast, cooperating and competing with each other. nine0003

Marketplace Amn

Baldur’s Gate Device

Over the following centuries, the city retained the principles of a merchant republic laid down during the Tax Revolution. Supreme power belonged to the council of four equal dukes. New dukes were elected in a citywide election and retained their title for life. At the same time, anyone could run, even a citizen of another state.

The dukes appointed city officials, passed laws and determined the foreign policy of the city-state, which was reduced to complete neutrality. Although formally Baldur’s Gate was part of the so-called Alliance of Lords, an alliance of rulers of large northern cities, to which, for example, Neverwinter belongs, in the entire history of the Gate’s armies went to war only once to take part in the fight against a huge horde of orcs in 1235 . nine0003

The canonicity of Dark Alliance is questionable, but there is nothing in the board game that contradicts the history of Eldrith. But the second part definitely does not belong to the canon

And this story ended badly. The paladin Eldrith, who commanded the fighters, was defeated, and was expelled from the city. Vowing revenge, she sent her own mercenaries against Baldur’s Gate and died. And a few decades later, as part of the video game Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance, she rose from the dead, and driven by a thirst for revenge, gathered her own army of monsters and evil races, who, in alliance with the Thieves Guild, tried to subdue the city. nine0003

Other than such conflicts, Baldur’s Gate remained a bastion of neutrality amid the constant conflicts that tore apart the North. This was largely due to the fact that the military forces of the Gate are a company of mercenaries called the Flaming Fist (Flaming Fist).

symbols

At any given moment, half of her soldiers defended the city and maintained order on the streets, while the other half worked for neighboring states, paying taxes to the Gate. Such a scheme required potential employers to have no doubt that the homeland of the Flaming Fists would not intervene in someone else’s conflict. nine0003

The Gate’s outstanding tolerance also contributed to the neutrality. From the very foundation to the present day, any religious cults were allowed in the city, except for frankly destructive ones, there was no discrimination of individual races and peoples. Baldur’s Gate has constantly attracted migrants and refugees. So, relatively recently, thousands of Calimshites fled here from the wars in their homeland and built their own district, Little Calimshan, on the outskirts of the Gate.

Time of Troubles

However, Baldur’s Gate is far from a utopia. The absence of racial or religious prejudice emphasizes the monstrous class inequality. Descendants of the old bloodlines, the patricians live in their own district, the Upper City, which is patrolled by the Guardian independent of the Flaming Fist. Her only task is to ensure the peace and tranquility of the patricians, including expelling from the area any people who are unpleasant to noble people.

Less well-born Baldurans, even rich ones, live in the Lower City, at the base of the hill. Finally, outside the city walls lies the Outer City, a vast slum where neither the Watch nor the Flaming Fist enforces the law. Its inhabitants, however, are also taxed. At the end of the 15th century, the apparent injustice of this system provoked a rebellion, but before that, Baldur’s Gate was at the epicenter of another disaster. nine0003

It all began with a global cataclysm that swept Fairun in 1358 — the Time of Troubles (Time of Trouble), when the gods fell into the material world and wandered through it in the form of mortals. Many of them perished during this period, but some, like the god of murder, Baal, anticipated their death and planned their subsequent rebirth.

Baal created many offspring, putting a piece of his essence into each one. He expected that after his death and the end of the Time of Troubles, the Children of Bhaal, driven by instinct, would begin to kill each other. With the death of each, the power of the god in the rest would increase, until, finally, the last of the Children would not have collected all the power of the deity, and Baal would not have been reborn in his own descendant. nine0003

Sacred Symbol of Baal

How Baal’s plan affected the Gate is shown in the original Baldur’s Gate, and described in the book of the same name by Philip Ethans, which presents the «canonical» version of events that entered the universe of the tabletop role-playing game. Sarevok Anchev, a descendant of Baal from among the merchants, learned about his own origin and decided to purposefully gather the strength of his father in order to turn into a god.

He rose to a high position in the Iron Throne criminal trading company, which controlled the arms and iron trade. He then used his resources to hunt down other Children, including two of Gorion’s pupils: Imoen and the game’s protagonist, named Abdel Adrian in the book. nine0003

Sarevok Anchev looked like a real villain in Dungeons and Dragons

In parallel, Sarevok caused an iron shortage in the market by hoarding supplies, and orchestrated the assassination of one of the four dukes of Baldur’s Gate to take his place. He hoped to unleash a war between the Gates and their longtime rival, Amn, blaming the southern neighbor for the death of the ruler.

The members of the Iron Throne expected to sell the high-quality iron they had accumulated to the Gates against the backdrop of the war, earning a huge fortune, and Sarevok himself hoped that the massacres would hasten the awakening of his powers and the transformation into a god. Fortunately, the pupils of Gorion uncovered this plan in time, and Sarevok died, but the connection between Baal and Baldur’s Gate did not end there. nine0003

From left to right: Imoen, the second pupil of Gorion; Minsk, the legendary ranger and companion of the Children of Baal, who deserved his own monument in Baldur’s Gate; half-elf Jaheira, Abdel Adrian’s canon romantic interest

The townsfolk, frightened by the intervention of the deities in their lives, banished Abdel and his sister, who had many adventures in Amn and confrontation with their brothers and sisters in Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn and Baldur’s Gate II: Throne of Bhaal. In the end, it turned out that the Pupil of Gorion defeated his brothers and sisters, but did not turn into a new god of murderers and thwarted Baal’s plan. nine0003

True, this was rejected as part of the board game, stating that in addition to Abdel Adrian and Imoen, who had renounced divine powers, another descendant of Baal survived — the thief Biekang. It was his actions that began the final chapter of Baldur’s Gate history for now.

Recent events

In the fifteenth century, an attempted coup d’etat took place in the city. Duke Valarken, with the help of a band of werewolves, killed two of his co-rulers and tried to usurp power. The Flaming Fist and the Guardians worked together to oust Valarken, but only one of the four required rulers remained in the city. The richest families took advantage of this to carry out reforms — they created a parliament, designed, firstly, to elect new dukes, abolishing direct voting, and secondly, to share power with the dukes. nine0003

Also, one of the four dukes received the status of Grand Duke, called upon to resolve possible contradictions between colleagues. The first to receive this title was Abdel Adrian. Thanks to Bhaal’s blood, he lived much longer than a normal human, and returned to Baldur’s Gate as a hero after his half-brother’s crimes were forgotten.

Old Abdel Adrian, Grand Duke of Baldur’s Gate

Representatives of most of the patrician families, as well as several representatives of the Lower City from among the most respected merchants, entered the parliament. The Outer City received no representation. However, in the following years, many parliamentarians were bribed by the Guild, based in the Outer City, the largest criminal syndicate in Baldur’s Gate, which united and ousted all other thieving groups. And many of those who refused bribes became locked in to the interests of the Upper City, further polarizing society. nine0003

Combined with the growing social stratification, masses of refugees, and the ongoing metaphysical leapfrog that followed the Time of Troubles throughout Faerun, the Gate seemed destined for disaster.

Art from the board (not role-playing) game Betrayal at Bulder’s Gate

This is what happened in the 1490s, as part of the prepackaged adventure Murder in Baldurs Gate. It all started when Wikang attacked Abdel Adrian during a public speech. The last two children of Bhaal went into battle, one died, and the second finally turned into a concentration of forces of the God of Killers. Baal’s plan, contrary to all expectations, came true: his last child was transformed into a monster, which was quickly destroyed by the city guard, and the god was reborn. nine0003

His resurrection, however, came at a difficult time for the gods. The Time of Troubles is over, but now the supreme god of all Toril, Ao, tired of the fact that the celestials do not pay enough attention to mortals, destroyed the Tablets of Fate, a kind of «divine constitution» of Toril, and began to write new ones.

Lord Ao, a deity so powerful that the prayers of mere mortals do not reach him

Cataclysms were going on all over the world, magic in some regions either stopped working, or, on the contrary, led to unpredictable results, the gods killed each other, as in the Time of Troubles, or, conversely, were reborn from the dead, like Baal. And most importantly, they realized that when the Tablets are completed, God will “get stuck” in the position in which he finds himself at that moment, and they need to expand their influence as quickly as possible and by any means. nine0003

The evil deities were especially zealous in this, actively unleashing wars and intrigues in the mortal world. The reborn Baal was no exception. The Lord of Assassins decided to gather forces at Baldur’s Gate, pushing its inhabitants to bloodshed. To do this, he intensified the already long-standing tensions between the high-born aristocracy of the Upper City, the merchant syndicates, including the Flaming Fist, and the disenfranchised poor from the Outer City, who relied on the protection of the Guild.

The most powerful people in Baldur’s Gate before the resurrection of Baal

Under the influence of the deity, the leaders of all major factions became more and more violent. Parliament passed laws that infringed on the rights of all but the urban elite, and suppressed any discontent by force. Flaming Fist soldiers arrested, beaten and executed people on the streets, bypassing official courts and on the slightest suspicion. And the Guild moved on to a terrorist fight against the city’s elites, ending in a bloody riot in the prison of Baldur’s Gate.

Despite the best efforts of the heroes, Baal’s plan eventually succeeded. Although the heroes slew Duke Thorlin Silvershield, whose toughness turned him into Bhaal’s Chosen, the lord of assassins himself successfully bled the city and left it with renewed vigor, reclaiming his place among the gods of Fairun. nine0003

They are in the form of miniatures

The troubles did not end there. Just before the events of the upcoming game, Baldur’s Gate fell into the epicenter of the intrigues of the devils — orderly evil creatures from the dimension of Baator, or the Nine Hells. Zariel, a fallen angel and ruler of the First Circle, used an infernal device called the «Companion» to transport the nearby city of Elturel to the underworld. It turned out that 50 years ago, its rulers promised to give Elturel to the devils in exchange for help in the fight against vampires, and now it’s time to pay the bills. nine0003

Baldur’s Gate is flooded with refugees from the ruins of Elturel. In addition, Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard, the commander of the Flaming Fist, who was given a position during the turmoil caused by Baal, was in Elturel at the time of the disaster, and also fell into Hell. This allowed Zariel to start making plans for the next capital.

Zariel

Her attendant, Duchess Thalamra Vanthampur, turned to the cults of the three gods of death, including the omnipresent Baal, and instructed them to carry out as many murders as possible in the city. Falampra hoped to undermine the Flaming Fist’s credibility, already demoralized by the disappearance of its commander, to disband the mercenary troop, and take the place of the Grand Duchess. After that, she had to perform a ritual using the Shield of the Hidden Lord hidden under the city, a sinister artifact in which the soul of a powerful devil was imprisoned. nine0003

It was the effects of the Shield that accounted for the moral decline of Baldur’s Gate over the centuries. If the ritual had been completed, the Gate, following Elturel, would have fallen into Hell, but a group of heroes successfully thwarted Zariel’s plans by descending into Baator.

Baldur’s Gate held, but immediately afterward attracted the attention of the illithids. True, we have yet to learn this story — in Baldur’s Gate 3.
