An easy way to play PC games on your TV

If you own a Windows 10 or 11 PC and an Xbox One or Series X / S console, you might not be aware that those devices have some interesting cross-functionality. Using Microsoft’s Wireless Display app, you can easily output the games from your Xbox to your Windows PC screen. Conversely, it’s possible to stream what’s on your PC to the TV that you’re using with your Xbox — you can even control it from the console, and setting it up is surprisingly simple.

One note, though: This is a wireless-only feature. Because the app uses Miracast to stream the content from your PC, you’ll need to make sure that both the Windows PC and Xbox One or Series X / S are on the same Wi-Fi network.

How to stream your PC to your Xbox One or Series X / S

Any Windows 10 or 11 PC that can connect to Wi-Fi will support casting to a wireless display, but you’ll need to download a free app for the Xbox.

Navigate on the console to the Microsoft Store (or simply click this link) and download the Wireless Display app to your Xbox.
Once the app is installed on the console, open it up. It will display a message saying that your console is now ready to be connected to your PC. The app also mentions a very helpful hint to keep in mind: the controller can switch between gamepad and keyboard / mouse control modes by pressing the menu and view buttons (the two buttons beneath the backlit Xbox logo on the controller).

Head over to your PC. Once you’re ready to stream some content, press the keyboard combo Windows + K. Alternatively, you can click Connect to a wireless display in the Display menu of the System settings. Either way, the next screen will show your console’s name.

Be sure to select this button allowing inputs if you want to play streamed PC games from your Xbox with a controller.

From here, you can choose to extend what’s on your PC monitor, duplicate it, or set the display on the Xbox as your second screen. For our purposes, we set it as a duplicate so that the Xbox display mirrored our PC monitor.

This small taskbar gives you easy access to streaming modes and disconnecting.

Once you’re connected, you’ll see a small, movable taskbar located at the top of your PC monitor and your wirelessly connected TV. This lets you adjust the quality setting (accessible by clicking the gear icon) between gaming, working, or movie modes. During testing, it was tough to discern the difference in visual quality between the three. We found the gaming setting is best if you’re solely playing PC games, as it has the least noticeable latency while using a controller.

The option to stream the audio to your Xbox is in the playback device list, when you click the volume icon in the system tray.

One tip: if you’ve got better-sounding audio connected to your TV, you can switch the audio to output there instead of your PC.

Finally, Microsoft claims that you cannot use the Wireless Display app to display what it deems to be “protected content.” So any encrypted video content from apps like Netflix or Hulu won’t work. However, we were able to stream anything we wanted through the Google Chrome browser. If you’re running into trouble trying to get your movie or TV shows from Netflix or Hulu to appear, we suggest downloading those apps from the Microsoft Store on Xbox instead.

Wozu Spiele und Fotos auf eine Xbox One streamen?

Die Frage nach dem „Warum“ ist schnell beantwortet: Eure Xbox One kann zu einem noch vielseitigeren Streamingplayer für die gesamte Familie werden. In der Regel steht die Konsole im Wohnzimmer, angeschlossen an den großen Fernseher. Doch was, wenn ihr mal ein Game von eurem im Arbeitszimmer stehenden PC eigentlich lieber am riesigen TV erleben wollt? Oder wie wäre es, Fotos vom letzten Urlaub möglichst schnell und unkompliziert auf den HDTV zu bringen?

Sicherlich gibt es noch viele weitere und vor allem individuelle Gründe, das Feature „Wireless Display“ zu verwenden. Schön, dass Microsoft die dazu nötige App neuerdings kostenlos anbietet und die Verwendung gravierend vereinfacht.

PC-Inhalte auf die Xbox One streamen: So geht’s

Und wie bekommt Videos, Browser-Tabs, Bilder und Spiele zum Beispiel aus eurer Steam-Bibliothek auf die Xbox One? Grundvoraussetzung ist, dass auf dem Rechner eine aktuelle Version von Windows 10 installiert ist und sich Computer sowie Konsole im gleichen Netzwerk befinden. Gegenwärtig wird nur die leider langsamere WLAN-Verbindung unterstützt, über LAN-Kabel könnte es zu Problemen kommen.

Ist dies erledigt, folgt diesen Schritten:

Schaltet die Xbox One ein, wechselt zum Store und ladet euch dort die App „Wireless Display“ herunter
Startet die App. Mehr müsst ihr vorerst nicht tun
Betätigt die Windows-Taste + P oder wählt im Benachrichtigungscenter (rechts unten) den Punkt „Projizieren“
Klickt auf „Mit drahtloser Anzeige verbinden“ und wählt dort eure Xbox aus
Los geht’s!

Tipps für ein besseres Streaming zwischen Xbox One und PC

Wie verwendet ihr den PC an der Konsole? Ihr könnt mit eurem Xbox-Controller die Windows-Oberfläche bedienen, was freilich nicht allzu komfortabel, aber insgesamt sehr solide gelöst ist. Die Eingaben direkt an eurem Rechner erfolgen wie gewohnt mit Maus und Tastatur. Ebenso findet ihr am oberen Bildschirmrand die Möglichkeit, Einstellungen (Zahnrad) vorzunehmen. Hier wählt ihr eine Qualitätsstufe nach Bedarf aus – normale Arbeit, Spiele oder Video.

Besagten Controller eurer Xbox könnt ihr auch zum Zocken am PC verwenden, was bei mir zugegeben nicht immer zufriedenstellend funktionierte. Eine Option, bei der Windows das Gamepad direkt als Eingabegerät erkennt, wäre hilfreich.

Generell solltet ihr ausprobieren, welche Spiele gut via Streaming laufen und welche nicht. Ein etwas älteres „Just Cause 2“ bereitete bei mir massive Probleme (Steuerung, Bildqualität), Games wie „Shadow Warrior 2“ oder „Tropico 6“ liefen dagegen ziemlich gut.

Die Performance verbessert ihr, indem ihr im Hintergrund laufende Downloads pausiert, aber auch Anwendungen wie Mailprogramm und Browser schließt. Hierdurch steigert ihr die Bildqualität und senkt die Verzögerung zwischen Ein- und Ausgabe (Stichwort: Latenz).

Ebenfalls wichtig zu wissen: Kopiergeschützte Medien wie zum Beispiel Netflix, Amazon Prime oder gar Blu-rays könnt ihr nicht vom PC auf die Xbox One streamen. Unproblematisch sind in typischen Formaten vorliegende Videos und Musik.

Ansonsten gibt’s keine gravierenden Einschränkungen, abgesehen vielleicht von der nicht immer perfekten Bildqualität. Beim Betrachten von Fotos und Videos fällt dies kaum ins Gewicht, bei Spielen dagegen mehr.

Von Smartphone auf Xbox One streamen

Auch wenn dies an keiner Stelle namentlich erwähnt wird, scheint die Wireless-Display-App auf dem Standard Miracast aufzubauen. Das führt dazu, dass das Programm auf der Xbox One auch den Display-Inhalt eures Android-basierten Smartphones spiegeln kann. Ich selbst probierte es mit einem Samsung Galaxy S8 aus.

Vorgehensweise:

Wählt auf eurem Smartphone (von Samsung) die Option „Smart View“ und tippt die dort eingeblendete Xbox One an
Folgt ggf. weiteren Anweisungen und nutzt fortan den gespiegelten Bildschirm

Unter Umständen könnt ihr auch andere Smartphones mit Android einsetzen. Hier heißt die Funktion „Smart View“ wahrscheinlich anders. Sucht nach „Miracast“, „Konnektivität“, „Bildschirm spiegeln“ oder ähnlichen Begrifflichkeiten.

Zwar ist die Latenz deutlich wahrzunehmen, doch möchtet ihr Freunden oder Familienmitgliedern beispielsweise Spielszenen, Apps, Fotos oder Videos zeigen, ist diese Möglichkeit, Medien vom Smartphone auf die Xbox One zu streamen sehr bequem und einfach. Für den Alltag ist das völlig ausreichend.

Da geht noch was

Microsoft könnte die ziemlich nützliche „Wireless Display“-App der Xbox One gerne noch überarbeiten. Mein größter Wunsch wäre es, wenn das Tool einfach zum Betriebssystem der Konsole gehörte, ähnlich wie bei Windows 10. Denn so müsst ihr das Programm erst manuell aufrufen, um eine Verbindung zwischen PC oder Smartphone herzustellen. Das ist etwas umständlich, klappt aber dennoch gut.

Auch wünsche ich mir eine niedrigere Latenz und eine optimalere Unterstützung des Xbox-One-Controllers. Denn speziell für sehr schnelle Games ist diese Streaming-Funktion nicht optimal.

Windows 10 mit dem Handy verbinden: So bringt ihr PC und Smartphone zusammen

Nichtsdestoweniger ist der „schnurlose Bildschirm“ hilfreich, wenn die Xbox One ohnehin im Wohnzimmer steht und ihr zum Beispiel eurem Besuch ein paar Fotos oder Videos präsentieren wollt.

How to stream Xbox One games to a Windows 10 PC

Windows 10 includes the ability to stream your Xbox One games to the Xbox app on your PC. This is a rather interesting feature, which we will talk about in more detail today.

If you have an Xbox One, you may not realize that you can stream your games to your Windows 10 PC without any additional software or hardware. All you need is a game console, desktop or laptop. The Xbox app should already be installed, so it only takes a few minutes to launch it and start streaming.

The Xbox app includes your activity feed, your games, messages, activity alerts, and more.

Along the left edge, at the bottom, there is a «Connect» button. If you click on it, you will be able to connect to Xbox One. In this case, we can enable it.

Do you have an Xbox One? Click the «Connect» button to connect to it.

However, even though we are connected, we still need to be logged into the console before we can actually use it on our PC.

If your account is secured, you will need to sign in before you can use it remotely.

Once connected, you can access a lot of options. Take a moment to review them at your leisure. However, what concerns us most is the streaming options you see at the top.

If you have connected your TV to your Xbox One, you can use your computer as a remote control.

There is also an option with which you can use the on-screen controller. Obviously, this is of little use in games, but with its help you can at least navigate through the menu.

Finally, under the «More» menu, you’ll find options to disable, turn off the console, or «forget».

We recommend testing streaming first. The system will determine the optimal qualities for your system and network. It’s best if you connect your PC and Xbox One to your router via an Ethernet cable.

Either way, by connecting through the Xbox app using the streaming feature, you’ll be able to see everything on your PC as if you were sitting in front of your Xbox One. This means other people in the house connected to your network can drop in and watch your gameplay without being in the same room.

After streaming, you can play games and use your Xbox One on your computer even in windowed mode.

There are some controls in the streaming window that you should pay attention to. You can return to the home screen at any time by clicking the Xbox symbol on the far left. If you want to disable/enable chat click the microphone icon.

Pay attention to the quality button on the right. This will determine how good your Xbox streaming will look on your Windows 10 PC. In this example, the default quality is set to Medium, but it can be set higher, although as we mentioned earlier, you are guaranteed better results if you connect and Xbox One, and PC to the router using an Ethernet cable.

Another interesting element is the bandwidth meter, which can be accessed by clicking on the icon with lines next to the «stop streaming» button. This meter will tell you what your total bandwidth consumption is, which is useful for determining where the problem might be on your network and if there is enough bandwidth to stream from Xbox One to your computer.

Microsoft has made it surprisingly easy to stream games and other content from its flagship gaming console to any Windows 10 PC with the Xbox app installed. As long as the console is on the same network, it’s literally as easy as hitting the Connect button and then Stream.

So, the next time you’re playing a game and want to move into the bedroom, all you have to do is plug your controller into your computer and stream to it.

How to run XBOX games on PC?

Microsoft was able to afford something that Sony is unlikely to be able to in their new generation of consoles — the ability to play games on the computer. It is understandable, because Xbox and Windows are owned by the same company. This radically changes the approach to console games. Now there are several ways to play what was previously only the prerogative of Xbox owners. In this guide, we will show you 2 ways to play Xbox games on your computer: through a proprietary application or by streaming over Wi-Fi.

The best way to play Xbox games on your computer without having to create your own stream and broadcast a picture is to use the proprietary Xbox Play Anywhere app. The main advantage of the approach is that you can even play using the keyboard and mouse. With this in mind, we recommend using this method wherever possible.

The second method is interesting because it allows you to play a game that does not have Xbox Play Anywhere. In other words, we can run any game on the console and just stream it to the PC.

Method 1: Through Xbox Play Anywhere

If you purchased a digital Xbox game, it is linked to your personal account. Some of the games are labeled Xbox Play Anywhere, which indicates that they can even be played on a computer without requiring a re-purchase. Moreover, you can play with the same saves, get achievements on both devices. Most Game Pass games are Xbox Play Anywhere. However, it is necessary to check if there is such a mark on the game’s page in the Xbox store. We can do this both through the website and from the application.

How to play an Xbox game on your PC:

Download the Xbox app for Windows if you don’t already have it.
Go to your game library (button under the Xbox logo). All games that can be played are displayed here. Immediately after purchasing a title, it will be displayed in the list (if supported).
Select a game from the list and click on the «Play» button.

Important! You can only run the game on one device at a time. If you play it on a computer, it will not be available on the console and vice versa.

Method 2: Broadcast from Xbox to PC

The method is a little more difficult to implement, but after a couple of times you will remember all the steps, but until then, use our guide.

Instructions for downloading an Xbox game on a PC:

Go to the Xbox settings, to do this, press the Guide button and from the main menu expand the tab from the upper left corner and open «Settings».
Go to the «Devices and Connections» section, and then select «Wireless Features».
Check the box next to «Enable wireless features» and go to «Xbox app settings».
In the «Other devices» block, set a dot in the second line.
In the right menu, activate «Allow game streaming» and «Allow game streaming to other devices.»
Download the Xbox Console Companion app to your computer.
Run the utility and on the «Connections» tab, select your console from the menu that opens. To do this, both devices must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Press the Stream button.

Your computer will now display the Xbox screen on your desktop and be able to play any games.
