Epic Games Store free games list: what’s free right now?

The Epic Games Store is still giving away free games each week throughout 2022. Completely free, no strings attached (except the one tied to Epic’s storefront).

Even if you don’t plan on playing these free offerings anytime soon, you might as well log in and add them to your library if you’ve got an Epic Store account. Keep checking in here to see what’s free right now and what’s coming in the future. We’ve also listed the full history of Epic’s giveaways, so you can see what’s already been given away.

For games that are free every week, check out our lists of best free PC games, best free games on Steam, and best browser games.

Epic Store free games right now

We’re on the usual weekly schedule now for Epic’s freebies, so keep an eye out for each week’s new free choices.

Epic Games Store: What’s free until November 10

November 3 — November 10, 2022: Filament and Rising Storm 2: Vietnam

We’ve entered into November, and a new month brings a new week of freebies from the Epic Games Store. First up is Filament, a puzzle-solving mystery aboard the Alabaster, a spaceship whose crew has almost entirely disappeared. As you freely explore the ship’s interior to solve over 300 puzzles, you’ll reconstruct the truth behind the Alabaster’s tragic disaster.

Speaking of tragic disaster, our other freebie this week sets you down in the Vietnam War. Rising Storm 2: Vietnam is the Red Orchestra series’ rendition of the conflict, pitting players in 32-vs-32 FPS battles with asymmetrical class and equipment selections. You’ll probably need to bring your own Creedence, though.

Reforged. Arthas’s greed ruined — Gambling

We first heard about Warcraft III: Reforged at Blizzcon 2018. We were promised something between a remaster and a remake, which is reflected in the title — from English it translates as «Reforged». Then Blizzard promised plot changes that would bring the story of Arthas closer to the expanded lore of World of Warcraft , reworked maps, character models, in-game videos — and, of course, modernized graphics.

After that, there was a wait for other news that dragged on for a year, a problematic beta, release delays, the start of sales … and the fury of users who have already brought down the ratings of the game to almost zero. Only recently it turned out that most of the work on the Blizzy project was outsourced to a small Malaysian company Lemon Sky , and you can’t call the result of her work flawless.

The funny thing is that technically Blizzard delivered on its promises. Some videos were really redrawn — as many as two. Some maps were really remade — as many as three. And the result is normal. But this is not what we expected and what we paid money for.

The story was eventually left unchanged, so that it is well known to all lovers of the original. As the orcs leave the inhabited lands and sail to the shores of Kalimdor, Prince Arthas fights the plague that is spreading across the kingdom of Lordaeron. In the process, he encounters the undead and demons, makes difficult decisions and peers into the abyss, which smiles affectionately at him in return. The end is a little predictable.

The first thing that catches your eye when you launch a story campaign is graphics. Of course, it was pulled up, but in 2020 the picture looks “vintage” at best. Models of buildings and characters have become prettier, but sketchy Christmas trees are almost more annoying than in the old version. Crafted objects contrast sharply with the cartoony environment, and small details like the tulips in Silvermoon City are a real rarity. It is clear that the style of the original could and should have been preserved, but here it does not seem like a conscious design decision. And the outdated interface on half-screen is not happy. Especially considering that at the same Blizzcon we were promised an updated widescreen menu.

When it comes to cutscenes, it’s just ridiculous. Compare the Stratholme Massacre video still hanging on the game’s official page with what we ended up with. Here is meant by «four hours of recycled in-game cutscenes»? Undoubtedly, in some places the angles have been changed, and the figures of the characters now move more smoothly. But after the chic cinematics, trailers and cutscenes on the game engine that WoW spoiled us with, the local ones look too simple. This is especially acute in climactic scenes like the murder of Sylvanas or Malganis, where clumsy animations ruin the seriousness of the moment. Of the cinematics, only the opening video and the duel of Arthas and Illidan were redrawn — and it is noticeably inferior to the original in terms of intensity of passions.

But if the graphics in some places just kill the drama, then the voice acting buries it so deep that even Arthas cannot be resurrected. On the one hand, the localization has become closer to the original text. Names and titles are no longer misrepresented, as was the case with Grommash Hellscream, who for some reason turned into Thunder Badass in the Softclub version. On the other hand, some moments are wildly annoying — like changing meme phrases or the literal translation of meat wagon as “meat wagon”. It would be more correct to say «dead body», but the old mistake was not thought to be corrected in a fresh translation. And the new Russian voices are such that you want to play exclusively with English voice acting. The actors, of course, did their best… But if you remember the old localization well, the new one will only make you bored. There is not even half of the charisma, energy and humor that 2002 put into translation.

Jaina has changed from a lively charming young lady into a gray mouse. Arthas, instead of a strong leader, in whose voice from the very beginning there are notes of vice, is like a submissive puppet of dark forces. The brutal growl of the orcs was replaced by the insipid recitation of memorized lines. Otherworldly voices of demons sound terribly ordinary. The expressiveness of intonations and vivid emotions is not enough for almost everyone. You can only praise ordinary units, but also Uther and Sylvanas: they are not only comparable to the images from the old version, but in some places they came out even better.

It’s ironic that there is not much to say about the gameplay — it was not touched (except for the balance changes, which are not particularly felt). From what we haven’t seen before, we’ve prepared an extended tutorial where Thrall encounters the naga on his way to Kalimdor. Three maps have been significantly redrawn: the Stratholme Massacre, the Battle for Silvermoon City, and the Capture of Dalaran, bringing the locations closer to those that are now in WoW. That’s all — except for minor improvements, such as the fact that children are now immortal. The massacre of the civilian population and the elven genocide can be arranged as much as you like, but children are sacred. Artificial intelligence is dumb by today’s standards, and heroes can spend a whole minute looking for how to approach the enemy, but these are tolerable little things. Many players complain about bugs, but we were lucky: the game did not bug, it only slowed down a little during some cutscenes.

In multiplayer, minor changes were made to the balance and new abilities were added to some units. Instead, Blizzard removed ranked games, clans, and LAN play. All user cards became the sole property of the company. You can’t make custom maps with other people’s content like popular anime characters. This means that the lion’s share of the fun available in the old version is automatically canceled in the new one.

Thank you for not touching at least something that worked anyway during the alteration. But this hardly justifies the loud statements of Blizzard. In the years that have passed since the release of the original, many have gone through the story campaign more than once — and in Reforged, fans will find too little new not to get bored. For new players, this version may be interesting — the game is still cool — but you have to make allowances for outdated graphics.

Summing up, one thing can be said: half a point on metacriticism, which Reforged can boast of at the moment, is not a fair assessment. The developers did a great job anyway. This is the same third Warcraft that we fell in love with eighteen years ago, but in an embellished wrapper. At least if you turn on the English voice acting and close your eyes to the spoiled multiplayer. But Reforged is definitely closer to a remaster than a remake, and if the studio had pointed it out right away, it would have been more honest. And the wrong PR caused the anger and disappointment of the fans: they dreamed of something completely different. One can only hope that the fourth0003 Diablo will not follow the same path.

You can play in Russian, but the voice acting quality leaves much to be desired, especially in comparison with the Softclub version.

Verdict

A good remaster, which is suitable to introduce the legendary game to those who are hurt to see the graphics of 2002. No more. Unfortunately, there is almost nothing for old fans to catch here.

  • Why Warcraft 3: Reforged came out with no story changes — interview with the developers

The main problem with WarCraft III: Reforged is that Blizzard has begun to listen too much to the opinion of an audience that doesn’t know what it wants. At BlizzCon 2018, the studio loudly announced a remake of the third Warcraft and promised to update not only the outdated graphics, but also the story campaign in accordance with modern standards and canon, primarily equaling World of Warcraft.

The developers wanted to pay more attention to the characters who played an important role in the history of the MMORPG (for example, Sylvanas Windrunner or Jaina Proudmoore), and make normal story cutscenes. In theory, it sounds great, but then the fans were divided into two camps: some were delighted with the idea, while others were perplexed. After all, why touch something that already works well? As a result, the company went down the drain.

Change of course in the middle of development usually does not bode well. And in the case of RTS 18 years ago, this was all the more a mistake, because the game needed much more noticeable improvements. Cut scenes in their current form look, to put it mildly, ridiculous, especially against the backdrop of improved graphics. A limited set of in-game animations, as well as a “floating” camera, it is not clear where, do not allow you to properly immerse yourself in what is happening, and the characters themselves seem cardboard. Yes, it all looked normal in 2002, but now such a sight is only sad.

In some places, however, Blizzard has slightly changed some of the splash screens, but you will hardly notice the difference. Most often it feels like a frame is missing. For example, when Uther tells Arthas that he sent messengers to negotiate with the orcs, the unrided horses immediately run up to the heroes, whereas in the original, the players are first shown how they cross the border of the camp.

  • World of Warcraft History

Another problem follows from this — marketing. The developers would do well to properly explain to everyone around that they abandoned the rethinking. It could have been said at least from the stage at BlizzCon 2019in October, and not in the Polygon interview that came out a few months before the release? So it turned out that in the eyes of the players, Blizzard promised a lot of things, and then released a “raw” game, where almost everything is the same, only in a new wrapper. Waiting for a remake, but got a remaster.

The Warcraft III: Reforged website still flaunts the description that it is «a complete reimagining of the classic real-time strategy game.» And in the key features, it is completely indicated that players are waiting for about four hours of recycled videos. It turns out to be a slippery business, because the players who have seen only advertising and the announcement, in general, do not even know what they are buying.

If we consider Reforged as a remaster — and this is it! — I have no complaints about him, except for those described above, since he copes with his main task perfectly. Finally, it’s not a shame to show the game to those who for some reason missed it at one time, and it’s nice to replay it yourself. You can say as much as you like that the strategy has aged well, but now it looks great as ever, and the updated art design is just right for it.

And it’s not just that the authors got rid of rough angular models and added polygons. Visually reforged, Warcraft 3 looks more like what we’ve become accustomed to over the past 15 years in World of Warcraft, while still staying true to the original. Affects the fact that the development was led by the creators of the classic version. It is difficult to put it into words, but the game seems to balance between the two styles, as a result of which there is no feeling of substitution. The only thing is that the shadows could be made more expressive, but this is my opinion.

  • Opinion. Even after 17 years, Warcraft 3 is still one of the best strategy games in the world

All Warcraft III models, from characters to buildings, have been overgrown with details. Particularly pleased that after the destruction of some buildings remain debris. The same goes for animations. For example, the characters move their lips during conversations, even outside the cut-scenes, although this is only visible when the camera approaches. When resting, infantrymen raise the visor of their helmet to wipe their foreheads, and peasants periodically twitch in a funny way, as if they stepped in feces. But in some places, the developers still cheated. It is said that gnolls no longer draw arrows from their quiver, instead they just appear out of nowhere in their paws. I myself did not pay attention to this little thing, but for sure the likes of it will be fixed in the next patches. But the spells are still dull, visually they lack power.

All cinematics, except for the very first one, remained the same — they were simply adapted for 4K monitors. Why they were not completely redrawn is not clear. However, in fairness, I must say that they still look very good, except that the orcs are striking, they were painfully skinny before. But the game added a new cinematic with the battle of Illidan and Arthas. On the one hand, fans have long dreamed about it. On the other hand, it falls short of those that Blizzard releases with enviable regularity for WoW. But it’s a sin to complain, because the original one always seemed terribly clumsy to me, but here it’s quite spectacular!
