Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a fantastic sequel and a game worthy of the Yakuza title. It improves on almost every aspect of the original, creating a much more immersive version of Kamurocho and deepening the already compelling relationships between the recurring characters. It also has a better villain and more engaging side quests. Yes, there are annoyances, bugs, and some pacing issues with the overall plot, but on the whole, Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a wonderful addition to the Yakuza franchise. I’m already looking forward to my next visit to Kamurocho!

Yakuza Kiwami 2 delivers a slick fresh coat of paint onto this Japanese epic tale, while keeping the same engaging and complex story that fans know and love. A memorable narrative, and some excellent dialogue and delivery make this a story that is worth playing, even for new entrants to the franchise. Meanwhile, while there are a few blotches on the graphical presentation of this remake, Tokyo has never looked so authentic in a game before, and the atmosphere built is second to none. There are some niggles with the camera, and the slightly outdated UI, however, the combat and mini-games are of a high standard, and keep things incredibly enjoyable throughout this extensive adventure.

The tale of Tokyo and Osaka, Kiryu and Sayama’s partnership, and Kiryu and Goda’s rivalry remains one of the Yakuza’s best stories, and Kiwami 2’s minor missteps don’t affect the heart of that experience.

Expand

The Japanese masterpiece has won a place in the hearts of fans since its release in 2005, but each part was published in the West with a decent delay, and therefore the game simply passed by many. It’s very sad because Yakuza is unique in its way.
Even non-core publications wrote about the authenticity of the game. A few years ago, journalists learned from a real yakuza how plausible it was. It turned out that the culture of the Japanese mafiosi, their traditions, the structure of organizations and even the types are extremely realistic. In general, SEGA is not just so proud of this franchise.
Two years ago, a reissue of the first part of Yakuza appeared on store shelves. It was a great opportunity for young players to get acquainted with the world of game designer Toshihiro Nagoshi. nine0015 Yakuza Kiwami 2 is, you guessed it, a full-fledged HD remake of the second part of the series, released in 2006 on the PlayStation 2. Did the developers manage to capture the spirit of the classics? Definitely yes!
But here lie the main problems of the game.
Enter the Dragon
The main advantage of Yakuza is its world and the story unfolding in it. It is best to compare it with the story Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven . The script of the entire cycle, especially the second part, can easily be turned into a big budget series HBO . It’s serious, dramatic, and incredibly tense. The heat of passion in the game subsides only when you are distracted by mini-games and additional tasks.
The story takes place one year after the events of Yakuza Kiwami. The protagonist, retired yakuza Kazuma Kiryu, is raising his named daughter Haruka away from criminal strife. But the past won’t let him go. One not very fine day, an old acquaintance Yukio Terada visits him and, right in front of Kiryu, dies at the hands of killers. From now on, Kazuma will be drawn into the confrontation between two criminal clans, the war of which he will have to prevent. Along the way, he learns a em secrets of the past and will reveal several conspiracies.
The characters in Yakuza are all charismatic. And in the remake they look like Hollywood!
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a very clever, multi-layered and intricate story. To some, it will remind the films of the master of Japanese cinema Takeshi Kitano «Brother Yakuza», «Lawlessness» or «Sanatino» , and to someone — «Game of Thrones» with its conspiracies and intrigues. By the way, the script is slightly expanded. The story of the relationship between Kazuma and the female detective Kaora Sayama sparkled with new colors: the storyline was deepened and developed through new scenes. In addition, they added a whole campaign dedicated to the insane Goro Majima. nine0003
Old new yakuza
The cutscenes with which the remake meets us were carefully transferred from the original to the engine of the sixth part. Yakuza Kiwami 2 immediately gives the impression of a game of the current generation, but do not rush to rejoice — the developers failed to avoid technical flaws.
First of all, the facial animation catches the eye. She is far from modern (compare with the animation in Mafia III ). But progress since the previous Yakuza Kiwami is noticeable. Of course, this is not a high-budget sixth part, where the facial expressions of the characters emphasized the game direction, but here, too, the majority show shades of different emotions. And the game is staged so skillfully that during the scenes you will forget about all the shortcomings! nine0003
The atmosphere of a true crime thriller radiates from each frame of the intro. Directing in the game is on top!
This is not surprising. Still, the technical base of the first HD remake was the prequel Yakuza: Zero , released in March 2015, and Kiwami 2 was based on the last part of the series — Yakuza 6: The Song of Life . So in most cases you can’t find fault with it without a microscope.
But there is one more problem: dialogues outside cutscenes. They are very old-fashioned, in the spirit of the era of the early PlayStation 3, and even PS2. The characters stand still, moving their lips and waving their arms. And, what is most offensive, there are a little less static dialogues than staged scenes. Yes, and they are only partially voiced …
You will really have to read a lot
But this is not so important, because localization is still limited to subtitles. You will not hear English speech in the game, the characters speak only Japanese (and a little Korean).
In general, the shortcomings concern only the technical side: sometimes weak animation, the curvature of some models and voice acting. The rest of the game is good… almost. The fact is that, in fact, this is still the same bitmap as thirteen years ago. B o Most of the time is devoted to hand-to-hand combat with everyone you meet on your way. You can even run into random bandits just by walking around not badly rendered cities. Just like in 2006. Only here the transition from exploring the location to combat occurs smoothly, without downloads. nine0003
And, in fact, everything. I walked around the map — watched the cutscene — got into a fight. Yes, the fights are exciting, but the lack of gameplay variety is sometimes depressing. Besides, we’ve seen it seven times already. If you dig into the franchise, it becomes clear that the latest numbered Yakuza is not far from the first game.
The reason lies in the Japanese gamers, who do not demand a revolution in the genre from each new part of the franchise. On the contrary, they are more likely to accept cardinal changes with hostility. Therefore, the concept has not changed much since Yakuza 2. And for some this can be a problem. nine0003
You can beat enemy fighters not only with your hands and feet, but also with everything that is not screwed to the floor
Fights, girls and arcade machines
For every victory, and indeed for every action in the game, you get points that spent on development. In fact, there is nothing more to say about the pumping system — it is identical to that presented in Yakuza 6. You can improve strength, health and stamina, as well as buy a couple of new moves. On this, perhaps, everything. The coolness of the character depends more on your ability to press the keys and hit the timing. nine0003
But experience and money will still come in handy. After all, pumping the character’s health is simply necessary, as well as stocking up in the pharmacy with a healing «elixir». By the end of the game, whole hordes of blockheads will come out at you, and if the hero is frail, it is easy to rake nuts.
The surest way to get stronger is to wander around the open world and look for local bandits, for the massacre of which you will receive some money and experience. This time we have at our disposal not only the town of Kamurocho, but also the fictional district of Osaka — Sotenbori. They look amazing on the new engine. nine0003
The cities in the remake are perfectly drawn. Such attention to detail has become famous Rockstar Games
And there is something to do in them. Yakuza Kiwami 2 is full of various mini-games that you can try out in between story missions. Here you have golf, and arcade machines, and gambling … Some additional tasks and activities have migrated from the last parts of the cycle. In particular, you will be offered to develop your own cabaret (just like in Yakuza: Zero), as well as create and develop your own clan. nine0003
The most important element of all games in the franchise are mini-games. There are countless of them here!
The filling of the open world of Yakuza Kiwami 2 evokes fond memories of the days when side missions in games were not limited to capturing the notorious turrets. On the streets of fictional cities you will meet a lot of unusual characters with their amusing and sometimes ridiculous stories. It is not necessary to complete these quests, but most likely you will. And all because they really take for a living. Who kidnapped the local player’s child? How does the old lady know kung fu? How to help a street musician sing better? These are the everyday questions that the game puts before you. nine0003
Naive simplicity is what makes these stories attractive. After meeting local eccentrics, you feel how your heart warms up … and now you already consider Kamurocho to be your second home. Therein lies the magical appeal of the Yakuza series.
The game has flaws, but none of them can be called critical — not even the somewhat repetitive gameplay. To some extent, this is an exemplary remake of a twelve-year-old game. And if PS2 times are golden for you, then you will definitely like it. nine0003
The cameraman often pulls out amazing shots. Many of them are more like art for the game

Verdict
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is in every sense the perfect remake of a game from the PlayStation 2 era. And the fact that the developers follow the old concept too faithfully may seem to some to be a problem. Otherwise, it’s a great action game with an amazing storyline in the style of the movie «Sonatina» .

⇣ Content
Game tested on PlayStation 4 In March of this year, we saw the end of Kazuma Kiryu’s story in Yakuza 6 and said goodbye to him. But at the end of August, the Dojima Dragon returned in the remake of Yakuza 2. One of the best games in the series is now available not only on PlayStation 2 and its emulators, but also on PS4. Moreover, this is not just a port or a remaster, but a full-fledged remake on the engine of the sixth part, which takes into account some of the shortcomings of the latter. nine0003 ⇡#Complete set Yakuza Kiwami 2 takes place one year after its predecessor’s finale. The fifth chairman of the Tojo clan has been assassinated, and the fate of the clan once held by Kiryu hangs in the balance. The situation is aggravated by the fact that the Omi alliance is about to start a war, because of which Tojo will have no chance of recovery. So Kiryu will not have to sit idle again — he will have to travel either to his native Kamurocho, without which not a single part of Yakuza can do, or to the Sotenbori region, familiar to fans of Yakuza 0. Yakuza can’t boast of advanced technology, but sometimes Kiwami 2 looks great At the beginning of the passage, players will be offered to watch a rather long video that fully retells the events of the first Yakuza. It is not necessary to go through the last game, but it is desirable, as well as Yakuza 0. Now it will be very easy for a new audience to join the series — if it was impossible to play these games in order on the PS3, then the prologue and its two sequels are available on the current Sony console, and the third , the fourth and fifth parts will be re-released very soon. But if for some reason you start your acquaintance with Kiwami 2, you will not get confused in anything and will still join the plot. nine0003 The story is still gripping and doesn’t let go until the end, unexpected twists and turns are surprising, and the characters are some of the most memorable in the entire series. The main villain Ryuji Goda, who respects Kiryu for his abilities and considers him the only worthy rival, is damn charismatic — the scene of their acquaintance is staged superbly. Goda calls himself the Dragon of Kansai and claims that two dragons will not survive this war. Detective Sayama became one of the best female characters that Kiryu had to deal with. And the favorite of the public Goro Majima, almost completely forgotten in the sixth part, was awarded a separate storyline here and is found more than once in the course of the main story. nine0003 In Kiwami 2, as in all Yakuza, a serious dramatic plot is accompanied by absurd side quests, of which there are more than seventy this time. About a dozen of them are very short and not very exciting events, because what is important in them is not the story, but the opportunity to make the character your assistant during the battles with street hooligans. In Sotenbori, for example, you meet an old woman who has lost a valuable item, and you find an object a stone’s throw away from the place where you just talked. You give the find, exchange a couple more remarks, and this is where the task ends. Now, when you purchase the appropriate skill, Grandma will be able to throw weapons at you. nine0003 Luckily, you don’t have to pay for broken glass Many other «side effects» turned out to be much more interesting, and some of them are hilariously funny, especially the mission with Kiryu’s doppelgänger. There are also sad stories, like the one about a musician who can’t sing, who has to constantly endure the attacks of hooligans because of an unpleasant voice. Kiryu, as always, helps everyone in need, gives them valuable life advice, and sometimes he learns something himself. All this happens under the constant lyrical music, which after so many parts of Yakuza you remember by heart. nine0003 Another story is related to the hostess club, which Kiryu becomes a member of a few hours after the start of the passage. The club is going through hard times and is on the verge of closing, and the owner of a competing establishment decided to put the last nail in the coffin — he made the tiny club become one of the participants in a large-scale competition, and in case of a resounding failure, the shame will be impossible to wash off. However, instead of giving up, the staff decided to take the opportunity to turn their club into the best place to relax. Kiryu will have to hire staff, help girls entertain clients, and also shake out (not with fists, of course) money from the rich. nine0003 ⇡#Native Walls You can spend more than a dozen hours in the club mini-game, but this is not all the content that Kiwami 2 offers outside of the campaign and side quests. There are darts, golf, mahjong, machines with old Sega games — you can’t list them all. And the «plot» about Majima, which tells about his adventures between the first and second Yakuza, offers a simplified real-time strategy in the manner of the one that was in Yakuza 6. Having gathered a small squad, the player will confront the Uematsu clan, who are trying to destroy objects on construction site of Majima. Watching what is happening from above, you need to arrange your fighters so that both the opponents are defeated and all the equipment remains intact. The story itself turned out to be short and not the most intense, but it’s nice to get it as a bonus — there was nothing like that in the original Yakuza 2. nine0003 There are so many weapons lying around sometimes that it would be a sin not to use them The sequel could not boast of a spectacular combat system at the time of its release. Fans of different styles have nothing to profit from again — pumping from the sixth part migrated to the remake. Again, you need to improve the indicators of health, attack, defense and rage, as well as learn familiar techniques. This time, a lot of emphasis is placed on melee weapons — and opponents constantly walk with them, and it is advisable for Kiryu himself to take clubs, sticks, shockers and other useful things with him (unique animations have been added for most of these items). You can buy weapons in several underground shops or pick up trophies thrown by defeated opponents. True, this must be done right during the battle — after it, for some reason, everything disappears. nine0003 Thanks to the new engine, the number of loading screens has been significantly reduced compared to the original in 2006. Fights with hooligans follow the same scenario as in Yakuza 6: a duel that began on the street can be transferred to a nearby cafe, throwing opponents to dining tables, swinging chairs and throwing poor fellows into glass windows. It all looks very cool, but after such tricks, frightened sellers will not immediately want to do business with you. But there is a chance that you will attract the attention of special bosses with a large supply of health — for their elimination they give a lot of experience. nine0003 Yakuza Kiwami 2 looks great too. If during the development of the sixth part, its authors did not have enough time, because of which several regions in Kamurocho had to be closed, then nothing of the kind happened in the remake of the sequel. Both in the Kamurocho area and in Sotenbori, you can visit any corner and go to any store. Only a small region was affected, which only those who played Yakuza 2 during the PS2 days will remember. But the loss is small — in the original there was nothing interesting at all, and all the plot episodes associated with this place were simply transferred to other locations. nine0003 Call a hundred people, Kiryu still can’t be defeated *** Yakuza Kiwami 2 is an amazing remake of one of the best parts of the series. The storyline is great, the characters are great, and there’s a lot of entertainment. There are almost no changes in the usual formula — many other games would certainly be criticized for this, but the creators of Yakuza manage to make each part of the series fresh, interesting and very comfortable. When you once again find yourself in Kamurocho and find a food store without the help of a map, knowing all the streets almost by heart, this does not cause irritation, but only reminds you of how much you missed these places since the last game. nine0003 Strengths:
