Supersoldaten (The Old Blood)

Super Soldier has other meanings. See Super Soldier (disambiguation) for other uses. These were the first iteration of General Deathshead’s Supersoldaten. They were used by Helga von Schabbs to guard Castle Wolfenstein. This iteration of Supersoldaten doesn’t have integrated power-cells and has to rely on a wired connection to supply them with energy. This variant is encountered en masse in Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, but now serves as a regular enemy instead of a boss and has slight…

Wolfenstein: The New Order — 10 Tips For The Deathshead Final Boss Fight

While MachineGames reinvigorated the Wolfenstein franchise wonderfully with The New Order, they also made it incredibly difficult. In general, this difficulty feels fair and conquerable, but the final boss fight might be the only time it isn’t. And while everyone’s still waiting for Wolfenstein 3, it feels like a good time to get back and take this Nazi down.

RELATED: The Best Bethesda Games, According To Metacritic

Having seen your squadmate brutally lobotomized by Wilhelm Strasse, also known as Deathshead, it’s easy to want revenge. At the end of the game, you get the chance to fight against an über-powerful mechanized Deathshead. It can feel impossible to take him down — unless you know what to do. Even then, though, it isn’t going to be easy.

10/10 Use Cover

When the boss fight starts after taking down the Fergus/Wyatt robot, get straight to the glass cover at the back of the arena. It’s easy to notice straight away that Deathshead is surrounded by a shield, so he can’t be hit anyway.

Instead, get out the LaserKraftWerk and switch it to cutting mode — the back of the arena has a cuttable fence. Cut a hole big enough and head through. The key here is to know that there is no other option. Deathshead can’t be damaged, there aren’t any items to pick up, so just get into cover.

9/10 Take Down The Zeppelins

The boss fight starts with a mini-puzzle. Once through that fence, there is a pile of goodies in front of good guy B.J. Blazkowicz that look very appealing. If in desperate need of health then grab some from this pile, if not, turn left or right and go straight over to a set of metal stairs.

Once up the stairs, there is a big cannon. Climb aboard and it’s clear straight away that Deathshead can’t be hit with it — it doesn’t swivel that way. Instead, use it to hit the two Zeppelins that are powering Deathshead shield. Once they’re down, shoot Deathshead until he collapses, then get ready for the second stage.

8/10 Stock Up

Remember that big pile of goodies right where you cut through the fence? Now’s the time to grab them. All of them. There’s a bevy of weapons, armor, and health to stock up on. They’ll all be essential for the next bit.

RELATED: 10 Things We Wish We Knew Before Starting Wolfenstein: Youngblood

Go back into the arena and trigger the cutscene. There’s a big hole to jump into now, but don’t go just yet. Cycle through every weapon, reloading all of them. Also take a look around for any health, armor, or ammo you may have missed. Preparation is key.

7/10 Hit Hard, Fast

Once down into the hole the player will enter a room full of pillars, pipes, and metal walkways. Deathshead will be making a whole lot of noise as he comes around the left side of the central pillar. He needs to be hit hard, fast.

The environment changes as Deathshead takes damage, so while all is still relatively calm it’s best to do as much damage as possible. There are some weapons that are better than others, which we’ll get into later in the list. For now, the focus should be on doing lots of damage.

6/10 Keep Moving

As Deathshead takes damage the keen-eyed gamer will notice that the room is changing. Fire is firing out of pipes all around the room, and yes, B.J. will take damage. This can be a killer if the player isn’t wary.

The best way to avoid this is to keep moving and learn the optimal route through the fire and the flames. There are some that can be slid under, and some routes that won’t have fire at all until the very end. And even if it doesn’t seem like there’s a route through, moving quickly can save the player in a pinch.

5/10 Lean Out Of Cover

Obviously, Deathshead is going to hit back, and he does a lot of damage. But with the drama and action reaching its peak, it’s easy for the player to lose their head. Pro tip: don’t.

RELATED: 10 Xbox One Games That Mock You For Playing On Easy

Be sure to remember all the other skills that Wolfenstein has taught through its twelve-or-so hours. Get behind cover to avoid getting hit. Lean out of cover while shooting instead of leaving cover to take less damage. These are basic skills that can be easily forgotten.

4/10 Learn Health & Ammo Locations

Given the difficulty of this boss fight, it is quite nice that the area is littered with health and ammo for the player to make the most of. It is definitely generous, but it can be fiddly to pick them up in the heat of the battle.

It is quite likely that the player will not do this on the first try, so each time they should scout the area and learn where the health and ammo is. If they’re on a next-gen console it makes it a lot easier, too, loading into the boss fight in a handful of seconds. This means that nearer the end, as things really start heating up, they won’t have to grind to a halt just to get the reticle bang on an item they noticed at the last minute. It can be seriously helpful.

3/10 Recharging Weapons

The best weapons against heavy armor are explosive and laser weapons. Knowing where to pick up ammo for the explosive weapons is really important, but it is just as important to know when and how to recharge the laser weapons.

At the back of the arena, there are two charge points, one in each corner. There is breakable cover, too, so the player can’t camp there and charge whenever they want. The best way to charge the weapons without getting hit is to lead Deathshead to the other end of the arena. Then, run back to the charge point. The weapon can be charged from a surprising distance, so be sure to be in a safe spot first, then adjust the distance to get the weapon charged up.

2/10 Which Weapons To Use

Not all weapons work as well as others against Deathshead, but the rules that the rest of the game has taught still apply here. Armored enemies have always been weaker to explosive and laser weapons, and Deathshead is no exception.

On the explosive end of things, grenades are incredibly useful to get damage and run. The player can also use the rocket attachment on the Assault Rifle, which does good damage but runs out quickly. The laser weapons — LaserKraftWerk and the AR Marksman in laser mode — are also great but run out quickly. Luckily they can be recharged infinitely, albeit with difficulty.

1/10 Keep Trying

This should be pretty obvious, but persistence is key. The Deathshead boss fight is famous for being incredibly difficult, and that means the player is unlikely to do it first try. Just keep learning the arena, where the best health, armor, and ammo is, and then stocking up on it mid-battle will be much easier. The player will also get better at avoiding the fire, and avoiding Deathshead.

With it being added to Xbox Game Pass along with a load of other Bethesda titles, many players will be facing this challenge for the first time. It can be done, even on Über difficulty, so don’t give up. Don’t forget what he did at the beginning of the game.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood game — general information

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, the passage of which is described in this article, begins in 1946.

Authentic atmosphere, distinct enemies, and a truly vibrant, detailed world are what fans love about this game so much.

System requirements and game completion time

To start and play Wolfenstein comfortably, it is enough to have an average PC. At the same time, given the fact that the game was released in 2015, its recommended system requirements are quite high. nine0003

Minimum system requirements:

  • OS: Windows 7, 8;
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-2500;
  • RAM: 4 GB;
  • graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560;
  • hard disk space: 38 GB.

Recommended system requirements:

  • OS: Windows 8;
  • processor: AMD FX-8350;
  • RAM: 8 GB;
  • video card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660;
  • hard disk space: 38 GB. nine0012

Complete walkthrough of Wolfenstein: The Old Blood will take 6 hours. At the same time, if you go through the game very slowly, the gameplay can be stretched up to 9 hours.

Note! The game has subtitles in Russian, which are recommended to be enabled immediately after installing the game.

100% Wolfenstein Storyline Guide

After fully setting up the game and launching it, you can start going through the storyline 100%. It should be noted that this walkthrough will describe the process of exclusively story missions, without mentioning additional quests. nine0003

Prologue

The game starts with a big cutscene. The first thing the player will see is a sleeping Blaskowitz, who is driving a car. This time, the goal of the protagonist is to sneak into Wolfenstein Castle, find a folder there that indicates the location of the secret base, and steal it.

The car will reach the complex and soon the player will be inside.

First, you need to wait until Blaskowitz gets his gun. At the same time, you can remove a good double-barreled shotgun from the wall — you will need it soon. nine0003

After a short monologue, Blaskowitz will be noticed by the guards and a shootout will begin. After killing the guards, you need to go down into the ventilation of one of the offices and watch the cut-scene.

Chapter 1. Prison

The main character goes to prison. He was thrown into a pit, from which you can get out through a pipe.

Note! In the process of lifting, the pipe will break off and become the character’s new weapon.

Once on the surface, the player needs to find another ventilation pipe. On the way, he will meet super-soldiers and doors that are energized. They can be turned off with knife switches and destroyed with a pipe. At the same time, it should be remembered that it will not be possible to neutralize several soldiers at once, therefore, in the event of a meeting with a group, one should move covertly. nine0003

The player will reach an elevator that needs to go down. Rudy’s kennel will be waiting ahead of him. Dogs will not cause any problems to the character, so you can safely go ahead, cutting them down with a pipe.

After going through a few more corridors and overcoming the ventilation, the main character will come to a small bridge, on which you need to activate the lever. This lever will supply electricity to the boat, on which it will be possible to leave the prison.

Chapter 2 Harbor

After arriving by boat at a dead end, the player must activate the lever and jump back into the ship. Now his task is to get to the pier, shooting enemies, and then overcome it and board another boat. nine0003

The player’s boat will sail towards the closed gate. The main character will need to climb onto a small platform, through which you can get inside the nearest building, and from there into the tunnels. The task of the main character at this stage is to find a hall with columns. Having made your way through the catacombs to this hall, you should turn left, thus going out into the street.

Important! One of the secrets (nightmare) can be found in this location.

After opening the gate with the switch and killing the enemies, the player will need to swim to a narrow hole. From there, he will go to Wolfenstein Fortress. nine0003

Chapter 3. Wolfenstein Fortress

Once in the huge hall, the player must reach a room that looks like a kitchen. It will be filled with soldiers that you can kill or escape into the ventilation hole.

Through ventilation and a few more interesting corridors, the player will enter a spacious room with snipers. In this situation, a reasonable solution would be to escape, although it is also possible to kill the sniper.

After going through the stairs and overcoming the library, the character will meet with his partner Wesley. After a dialogue with him, Blaskowitz will be attacked by Rudy Yeager. Due to the discharge of the shocker, the main character will lose consciousness, and then, waking up from a dream, he will find himself chained to an armchair in the interrogation room. After escaping from the chains, the character injures Rudy and escapes through an elevator nearby. nine0003

Chapter 4. Escape

The chapter will start in the elevator. After getting out of it through the hatch from above, the player needs to get to the funicular site, and from there to one of the booths.

Important! The character will not be allowed to ride: cabins with guards will constantly drive up, trying to defeat Blaskowitz.

In the end, the rides will end with the fall of the funicular along with the main character. Here the player needs to climb up with the help of his faithful pipe and find the elevator. Having climbed up with his help, the player needs to find a door on the other side of the building and, after entering it, jump onto the rising elevator. nine0003

Climbing into the rising elevator through the hatch, the player will rise to the fortress, in which enemies will already be waiting for him. A machine gun, as well as stealth, will help to deal with them.

During the passage of the location, one of Blaskowitz’s doors will be opened by a messenger named Kessler. After a dialogue with him, an attack will begin in the shelter, led by Rudy. His armor is equipped with a self-destruct device, so immediately after neutralizing it, you should run to the tavern basement, jump into the boat and go to Wulfburg. nine0003

Chapter 5. Wulfburg

The chapter begins quite peacefully. The player listens to Kessler’s instructions, and then goes in search of Agent Two.

At this stage of the game, the main character needs to find a large area with a tower in the center. There are a lot of guards around that can be bypassed or destroyed. Having overcome the tower, the player will find the hideout of Agent Two. He will give Blaskowitz instructions and disappear.

The player needs to take the key under the stone and open the door to the basement, in which the same Agent Second will be waiting for him. This agent will be Pippa, an old friend of the protagonist, who will help open the old passage while the player is having fun with enemies. nine0003

After leaving the basement, the character will enter the kitchen. You need to take a tray, put on an apron, and go on a date with Fräulein, putting the wine in Helga’s room. After that, a cut-scene starts.

Please note! In this chapter, Blaskowitz almost managed to get the folder.

Chapter 6. Ruins

Blaskowitz wakes up after the previous chapter and realizes that Helga has disappeared with the folder. After breaking through the wall with the help of a pipe and going further, he will see Pippa’s death. nine0003

The player now needs to contact Kessler. Having got out into the street, he will catch the signal and talk on the headset. Then you need to climb onto the pier, get a boat and jump into it.

There is anarchy in the sky, and Blaskowitz needs to get to the exploded building. There he will jump into the water and swim to the nearest stairs. From there, the player will enter rooms where his former comrades-in-arms will turn into zombies.

After such a sad scene, the player will jump off the balcony and swim to the robot, ending the chapter. nine0003

Chapter 7. Old City

The end of the game is near. With the help of the loader robot found at the end of the previous chapter, the main character can break through large doors and destroy monsters. After breaking the gate, you need to clear the area and get to the central square.

There will be a building not far from the square, which you should enter and activate the lever. This action will unlock the path for the player, who will only have to return to the loader and continue on their way. On the way, again, there will be various obstacles like massive gates opened by levers. nine0003

The chapter ends when the player breaks through the gates of the church and breaks through to the cemetery.

Chapter 8. Excavation

The storyline of Wolfenstein: Old Fornication, the passage of which is described in the article, comes to an end. The main character finds himself in a cemetery where you need to find a crypt. A light is on in it, and at this moment you can go down, but it is better to go to a small building behind the crypt.

After searching the building, the main character will go down to the crypt and through the caves will get to the platform. There, having overcome the wooden bridge, Blaskowitz will find an electric door. You need to get into it, having dealt with the Germans and making your way to the lever that turns off the power. nine0003

Wandering through the intricate corridors, the character will find a spiral staircase made of stone. You need to go down it, and then jump into the water. Ultimately, Blaskowitz will fall into Helga’s trap. A cut-scene will start, after which you will need to deal with the monster from the depths.

Important! The weak point of the boss is his mouth, and therefore it is necessary to shoot there.

When the boss is defeated, all that remains is to deal with Helga von Shabbs, take the stolen folder from her and watch the cut-scene. nine0003

Now the storyline in the game can be considered completed. There is a video with the passage of Wolfenstein: Old Fornication, however, it is worth noting that it will be easier to rely on the article during the game. In conclusion, it should also be emphasized that some gamers may find the game too short, but this raises the question — should masterpieces be drawn out.

    Introduction

    Probably, if gaming were a religion, and the players had their own scripture, then it would begin something like this: «In the beginning was Wolfenstein. »

    It was Wolfenstein 3D, released back in 1992, that laid the foundation for such a popular genre as a first-person shooter and at one time became a kind of technological breakthrough: 256 colors never seen before, convincing pseudo-3D and whole armies of opponents on the levels. As a result, the series has gained cult status. After there were the famous Return to Castle Wolfenstein (2001), not the most successful Wolfenstein (2009year) and, finally, more or less successful Wolfenstein: The New Order (2014).

    I won’t argue — Blazhkovich’s next adventure came out not bad, but not great: the monotonous gameplay was compensated by non-stop and bloody action, after which a dozen hours of gameplay flew by unnoticed.

    But MachineGames decided not to stop there and less than a year later announced a prequel add-on called The Old Blood. Judging by the description on the Steam page, «Old Blood» is a remake of the same «Return …», in which both the «famous Wolfenstein Castle» and «creations of dark forces» will find their place. nine0003

    recommendations

    How successfully they will cope with their task is another question, because behind the shoulders of the Swedish developers there is nothing but the «New Order» and they have nothing to do with the classic Wolfenstein and never had. Well, our review of Wolfenstein: The Old Blood will show what they did.

    From the very first seconds of the game it is clear that it was created primarily for fans. Only fans and experienced players will be able to see not only a lot of allusions and references to previous parts of the series, but also to other equally famous id Software projects. nine0303

    However, as it turned out after ten minutes of passing, and not only on id Software games …

    «Wait for me and I’ll be back…»

    1946 The war has not yet ended, but a little more and victory will be for fascist Germany. To save the day, two undercover agents arrive at the titular Castle Wolfenstein: of course, Blazkowicz himself and his partner Wesley. True, their mission eventually fails (how unexpectedly!) And both are thrown into prison. nine0003

    Of course, BJ, as expected, gets out of captivity (or rather, gets out), along the way solving simple puzzles with super-soldiers. The beginning is worthy of The New Order, you will not say anything. Not everyone can learn from their mistakes.

    In The Old Blood, super soldiers cannot move freely around the level (at least at the beginning) — they are limited by the length of the power cable. Therefore, it is enough to turn off the electricity for the big man to fall helplessly to the ground. By the way, pay attention to the pipes in the main character’s hand — here they replace the not yet invented «Laserkraftwerk» and with their help you can climb the walls and silently kill the Fritz. nine0303

    And this is how the first hour of the game will pass — in the dull catacombs of the castle. The matter will not be limited to super-soldiers alone: there will be cybernetic dogs familiar from the «New Order», and just ordinary soldiers, and «super-exciting» journeys through winding, gray ventilations.

    Blazhkovich is also very picky about food.

    Then the game begins to unwind a little, and in the second chapter (there are eight in total), it releases the player into the fresh air. Although, if you hope that the levels in the add-on have become larger, you can only get upset: the entire game, the American soldier will have to wander through the rectum of the linear levels. nine0003

    The only thing that saves the day is non-stop action, picturesque surroundings and beautifully rendered weapons (this time without any futuristic guns, 1946, after all), which also shoot very convincingly.

    The bullets are still ruthlessly shredding the bodies of the enemies, only now the corpses disappear surprisingly quickly.

    Of course, the developers are trying to diversify the game and periodically push BJ head-on with the bosses. These meetings do not make Wolfenstein any more fun: you just have to shoot at the enemy’s weak spots and wait until he sticks his flippers together. This approach was relevant at the beginning of the 2000s, but in 2015, such a “know-how” looks at least archaic. nine0003

    Bosses are not difficult to defeat, the main thing is to immediately notice their weak points. This fascist dog lover, for example, needs to be shot until he falls to his knees, after which you will have to pick off the armor from his exoskeleton with a knife in parts. And so on until victory.

    The same can be said about the plot: if in The New Order we were told a curious alternative history of the Second World War, then in The Old Blood the developers sometimes slide into some kind of bad taste. nine0003

    Yes, the first six chapters are quite tolerable and do not get out of the general outline, but in the penultimate (seventh) on the streets of the German town of Wulfburg, a uniform zombie apocalypse begins, and all the inhabitants (including the soldiers of the Third Reich) turn into bloodthirsty zombie.

    It would seem, where does Freddy Krueger?

    Of course, shooting the living dead is no less fun, but everything happens too suddenly. If we compare The Old Blood with its predecessor, which came out twelve years ago (and you can’t do without it), then the novelty loses: in the same “Return …” in 2001, the monsters were more organically woven into the gameplay and sometimes really scared. nine0003

    Zombie is not a friend of the Nazi! And therefore, to save cartridges and time, they can and even need to be pitted against each other. Personally, I bet on a still living soldier, and you?

    By the way, since we are talking about «succession», I will say right away: in spirit, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood and its distant ancestor are completely different games from each other. No, it’s not good or bad, they’re just different, that’s all.

    And in The Old Blood, you can climb into the robot and crush the dead with mechanical claws . ..

    … but it is worth taking into account that they are not as stupid as it might seem at first glance, and, if the opportunity arises, they will try to crawl into the cockpit and grab a good soldier in the throat.

    But back to our «spoiled» friends. You don’t even have time to be frightened of them, because there are so many ghouls that after five minutes of the game you can’t look at the half-rotted and very well detailed faces of the Shamblers without a smile (yes, in The Old Blood the walking dead are called that). nine0003

    The penultimate chapter is perhaps the most meaty and spectacular.

    Speaking of meat — in addition, the developers have added a new game mode called «Test». The bottom line is this: there is a level, there is Blazhkovich, and there are a bunch of fascists who hate him. The goal is to score a certain number of points by killing the evil Nazis. It turned out not bad, especially considering that shooting is almost the best thing that is (and was) in Wolfenstein. nine0303

    As for the graphics — despite the assurances of the developers to improve it, it remained at about the same level (muddy environment textures have not gone away). That is, at first glance, we can confidently say that the system requirements of last year’s The New Order are also valid for the add-on.

    But no luck: Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 — DLC appetites seem to have grown somewhat compared to the original, though not catastrophically. But don’t worry — if your computer once «digested» The New Order normally, it will certainly cope with The Old Blood. nine0003

    Despite the outdated graphics, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood sometimes produces a very beautiful picture. The key word is «sometimes».

    Conclusion

    There’s still a lot to complain about in the new MachineGames game: second-rate jokes, faded characters, stupid AI, not the best ending, finally (and you could have “looped” the plot better, but, apparently, the release date was running out). However, I still don’t want to give The Old Blood a low rating, and here’s why. nine0003

    At first glance, a game like Wolfenstein: The Old Blood really does not deserve not only a positive assessment, but also the right to exist (after all, it’s 2015 in the yard).

    But one has only to spend two or three hours in her company, when suddenly you understand: in terms of mechanics, Wolfenstein is still the best first-person action game. And the point here is not only in the superbly done shooting, but simply because in the MachineGames game there is neither an extra open world, nor thousands of dreary tasks, nor fifteen-minute videos. nine0003

    On the contrary, the add-on for Wolfenstein (as well as Wolfenstein itself) is a classic action game, of which there are very few left. Therefore, and only therefore, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood honestly deserves a «Good» rating.

    Verdict: A good addition to an equally good game.

    Rating: 7. 0 (“Good”).

    Performance

    Here’s what Dmitry Prilepskikh aka Phoenix, after studying the game for testing, found it necessary to say on this subject.

    “One year after the release of Wolfenstein: The New Order, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, a major expansion pack, is a prequel to the original and includes eight large chapters.

    Graphically, almost nothing has changed. First of all, it is worth noting that the FPS counter remained locked at 60. New options appeared in the graphics settings menu, but this had almost no effect on the performance of video cards and processors, which remained at the same level. Yes, new Nvidia GeForce GTX 9 accelerators have been released over the past year80 4096 MB and GeForce GTX 970 4096 MB. However, there is no point in testing them, since even their predecessors provided comfortable performance at 60 FPS without any difficulties.
