The Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring is a real-time strategy game released in 2003 by Sierra Entertainment, Inc.

The gameplay of this adventure-strategic game is based on battles between two conflicting parties. For the game to begin for good, the player must take the side of one of the conflict. So you can choose a crew of good to oppose the dwarves and elves on their way to finally join the Fellowship of the Ring, or a crew of evil in which you must lead the dark forces of Sauron and take over the city of Minas Tirith. Therefore, the game is divided into two separate campaigns, 10 missions each. Therefore, if you are a fan of the film adaptation of Tolkien’s work, joint adventures with e.g. Legolas are something you cannot deny yourself.

The Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring is a 2003 real-time strategy game (RTS) developed by Liquid Entertainment, the makers of the previous Battle Realms and its expansion, Winter of the Wolf. It was published by Sierra Entertainment. Set in Middle-earth, it expands upon the events of the War of the Ring as told in The Lord of the Rings. Unlike the later The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth by Electronic Arts, War of the Ring is based solely on the books, not on the films by Peter Jackson. Thus, characters such as Frodo and Aragorn look and sound different from their counterparts depicted in the films.

The game features a horde of different warriors that can be employed by one of the two available faction, Free Peoples and Minions of Sauron, referred to as Good and Evil in the game. Environments range from Mirkwood to the barren stretches of Mordor, and each contain numerous settings, including ruined cities, Elven forests and Dwarven mountains. Despite its mystical appearance, and fairly diverse three dimensional environments and buildings, the game has been the subject of some criticism, due to the fact that its style of play is highly similar to that of Warcraft III. Its production being received by fans as mediocre, The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth, which was considered a major hit, followed closely in its footsteps.

Gameplay:

The game plays much like Warcraft III with added features, some previously used in Battle Realms. A similar layout and control system is used, and the player gets to control hero units with special abilities. Most regular units also have abilities of their own. The game also follows standard RTS conventions by having rally points, unit creation, and purchase of upgrades at certain buildings, etc.

Some features from Battle Realms that were carried over include toggleable walking and running for units and the ability to set buildings on fire. The game also emulates Battle Realms’ yin and yang system, where combat experience (or special actions) would provide a special resource that could be used to buy upgrades or units. This resource is called Yin or Yang in the previous game, depending on the faction being used, and is called Fate here. The player can use Fate Points (gained in combat) to summon Heroes, purchase their special abilities, and activate special faction-specific Fate Powers that will aid him or her in gameplay such as summoning an Ent or a Balrog. Some influence from Warcraft III can also be seen, with the Minions of Sauron corrupting land with War Posts before they can build upon it — very similar to Warcraft’s blight.

Unique to the game are the Places of Power, monuments that award bonuses (e.g., increased armor or attack) if controlled by the player. The player takes control of one by either finding on the map (by having a unit go near it) or wresting it from the foe (killing guards, if any, or else taking it when left unguarded).

The game features two factions to choose from: The Free Peoples of Middle-earth (the Good side) and the Minions of Sauron (the Evil side). The Free Peoples include Men – Men of Gondor and Rohan, the Dúnedain of the North – as well as the Elves, Dwarves, Beornings and Huorns. Playable heroes on this side include the Fellowship of the Ring, as well as others such as Faramir and Erkenbrand. The Minions of Sauron include the various kinds of Orcs and Goblins, Warg Riders, Trolls, the Haradrim, and Giant Spiders. Playable Evil heroes include Gollum, Saruman, and the Lord of the Nazgûl.

The game features a Good and an Evil campaign, in which one fights the War of the Ring from opposing sides. The game does not dwell on prominent battles apart from the Battle of the Hornburg in the Good campaign, but rather presents scenarios based upon Tolkien’s writings with varying degrees of license taken. For example, the Good campaign starts with Gimli and the Dwarves fighting the Orcs in the Iron Hills, and one Evil mission has Grishnákh destroying the warning beacons of Gondor. A relatively more faithful scenario is Boromir and Faramir leading Gondor forces to defend Osgiliath before Boromir leaves for Rivendell.

The game also features a multiplayer mode of gameplay, where players fight against either the computer (skirmish) and/or other humans (via network) on preset or user-created maps. Like Battle Realms, this mode includes several variations like Razing and Survival.

The entire game is divided into several playable categories. Players have the power to chose from playing a single skirmish game as either Good or Evil, a campaign game as either Good or Evil, or an online game with other players as Good or Evil. In addition to these, the player may also take the tutorial, a preset game that explains the way to move, attack, and give orders to your units. Playing the skirmish game is the simplest of the three main options, as no storyline is involved, and thus the player can utilize the full array of units, abilities, and buildings available. Playing a campaign game is very different, as a storyline is involved, and the player must follow that predetermined storyline in order to advance to the next stage of the campaign. Online play is the same as the skirmish, with the exception that you play against another player rather than a computer.

Whilst playing, you will order a variety of units around using the mouse, these units will vary depending on your faction, and use them to fulfill the predetermined victory condition, usually the destruction of your enemy faction. Occasionally, units you control will come into contact with enemies, and battle will be optional. During battle, units’ health will be reduced with each blow from the enemy, although this can be altered with healing or protecting spells. When a unit’s health is fully reduced, it dies, or in the case of Heroes, vanishes in a beam of light. Heroes that have been killed may be regenerated at the camp, though losing one in a campaign may be a losing condition. At the camp, units are created from a number of buildings, provided there are sufficient resources with which to do so, which range from barracks to stables, and, as with troops, are destroyed when under prolonged attack from enemies. Spells and sorcery also come into play, and can boost the efficiency of units or cause damage to enemies.

    VK: War of the Ring

Will there be at least one person in the world who has never heard of the Ring of Power? Who among us has not followed with bated breath the adventures of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli? Who hasn’t dreamed of seeing Boromir’s last battle or Gandalf’s duel with the Balrog? And the hobbits? Have you not admired the bravery of Merry and Pippin, have you not sympathized with the steadfast and faithful Sam, have you not marveled at how the modest Frodo Baggins took upon himself a burden beyond the strength of the greatest wise men and warriors? If you side with the forces of Light, all these heroes will fight by your side!

Some time ago I remembered another Lord of the Rings themed game. It wasn’t very popular, but I really liked it.

The game is called The Lord of the Rings — War of the Ring or War of the Ring. It was released a year before the Battle of Middle-earth in 2003. Unlike it, the War of the Ring campaign has a plot not based on the films of Peter Jackson, but on the events of the book, which the film did not cover, which is undoubtedly an advantage.

The campaign is held for Light and Darkness, the story of light good tells about the events of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the company of evil darkness is a prequel to these events, but that makes it no less interesting to pass. The task is performed in a certain sequence, but sometimes you are given the opportunity to choose what happens on the map of Middle-earth. Scattered around the map are the icons of the tasks of those that you have completed and you can go through again, and those that you have to complete, and those that will open to you after passing the available ones.

The essence of the game is simple: you rebuild the base, hire troops and complete the task. Tasks are different, but individual battles are divided into several modes:

    • Survival is the destruction of all enemy forces
    • Destruction — destruction of all buildings only.
    • Hunger — teams are given a huge amount of resources on the map with nowhere to get them.
    • Control — holding special points of places of power on the map that give a buff to your warriors.
    • Catapult — normal mode, only it has a giant catapult, the possession of which gives a huge advantage, although it shoots with a frequency of only 1 minute, its power is lethal

There is also a multiplayer in it, all the same modes as in a single game.

Panorama of the Battle of Helm’s Deep for the Hornburg Fortress. An angle that cannot be enabled in the game. This is one of the screenshots provided by the developers. The biggest battle of the Light’s campaign: the battle for Helm’s Deep, suggests that the battles are not very large-scale.

Two types of resources are used for building and hiring: ore and food. To extract them, it is necessary to erect an appropriate building on the source of resources, and then send workers there. And then everything is as usual here — upgrading the citadel: you open new buildings and improvements. By erecting new buildings, you open access to new types of troops.

The administrator of swordmaster.org wouldn’t say it’s easy to play. Sometimes I had to start the same tasks again several times due to the fact that they killed a key character or the enemy troops simply swept away my army, which had not yet had time to properly recruit, and behind it the entire base. It will not work to crush the enemy with a continuous armada of infantrymen or horsemen, it is necessary to combine your troops. For example: each side has units that can become invisible by receiving the appropriate upgrade. To detect them, you need to hire units that specialize in detecting invisibility: Ghost in Darkness or Pathfinder in Light.

The Army of Darkness has a low cost of units, while the troops of Light have higher characteristics. In addition to such indicators as the level of health, attack and defense, there is also a division of units by type of weapon.

The factions of evil and good have 5 heroes in single battles, each company has its own passive and active abilities, but not all are available at once. In order to open new ones, you need to use special points, they are called Fate Points, which are accumulated when you fight. They can be used for spells, and as I said for acquiring the ability of heroes, there are not many of these spells in total — 5 for each side. You can impose various effects on your troops and enemy troops, as well as on heroes. For a while, you can call on the Ancient Ent or the Balrog Morgoth. Also, these points are spent on the resurrection of fallen heroes.

    On the side of Good
    • Slash: Gondor Swordsman, Ranger, Beorning.
    • With piercing attack: Dwarf Ax Thrower, Elven Archer, Elven Lightbringer.
    • Crushing: Rider of Rohan, Shieldbreaker Dwarf, Huorn.
    • Heroes: Frodo, Gimli, Legolas, Aragorn, Gandalf.
    On the side of Evil
    • Slash: Orc Slasher, Southern Assassin (Haradrim), Bonebreaker Troll.
    • Stab: Goblin Spearman, Giant Spider, Wraith, Orc Archer, Uruk-Hai.
    • Crush Attack: Goblin Slaver, Warg Rider, Rock Thrower Troll.
    • Heroes: Gollum, Witch King, Ka Mara, Grishnakh, Saruman.

Elven Archers seem to be the strongest units (with all upgrades). However, their antipodes: Uruk-hai archers are also good.

Ka Mara is a huntress from the Haradrim people, probably the only female character in the game, but tolerance is respected here by the fact that she is a black woman. No, they could take Eowyn from the side of the Light, at least for the campaign.

My favorite hero is the Witch King, who can turn the ghosts of the black riders — the Nazgûl.

Although the music is not taken from the film (and the game, I remind you: from the book), it is very atmospheric, and the voices are also good.

But despite all this, unfortunately, the game did not gain popularity, and even good graphics at that time did not help the popularity of the game. Maybe this is due to the fact that many ideas were taken from the third Warcraft and the War of the Ring did not bring anything special. Although these ideas were implemented as they should. So from the minuses, I would single out that: there are no neutral monsters in this game and there is simply no such activity as «creeping»; mines with resources and Places of Power, no one guards by default; in campaign missions, a significant part of the map is not involved. I would recommend The Lord of the Rings — War of the Ring to all fans of real-time strategy games as well as to all fans of the work of Professor John Tolkien.

Troubleshooting The Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring

    Windows 10×64 has two problems. The first problem I solved was for 1280×720 widescreen monitors; 1360×768; 1366×768; 1440×900; 1600×900; 1680×1050; 1920×1080; 1920×1200. The contents of this archive rings.zip [1,58 Mb] (downloads: 567)
unzip to the folder with the already installed game. But unfortunately, with the updated exe, the game does not remember the set resolution 1920×1080 and 32bit color. After you exit the game and re-enter it, you will find that the resolution of 1280×720 16bit has turned on again. However, this is not very noticeable, since the graphics of the game at the moment do not shine with detail. The Gamma item does not have to be turned to the maximum like mine, and the game remembers the gamma setting.

The second problem is freezes and crashes from the game. It may not be superfluous to enable compatibility with Windows XP and Run as Administrator, on the Compatibility tab in the Properties of the shortcut to launch the game. However, remembering that the game is old, I decided to run it on one processor core. Look: immediately after installing the game, the launch shortcut in the Object field says: «S:\Games\TLOTR — War of the Ring\Rings. exe» in quotes. Our task is to instruct the operating system to run Rings.exe on one core of a multi-core processor. To do this, in the Object field, write C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C start /affinity 0x2 rings.exe without quotes. Leave the Working folder field unchanged. Otherwise, how will the system find the file that needs to be opened on one processor core. Now the War of the Ring game runs on one, in this case the second core.

I went through the goodness campaign in a couple of evenings, played single missions, it’s pretty comfortable to play. Posted a couple of videos on the game. One is a demonstration of the «Catapult» mode, what advantages it gives to players. And the second — I wanted to answer the question: «Who is stronger: Balrog or Ancient Ent?». The answer turned out to be predictable — Balrog.

Screenshots of The Lord of the Rings — War of the Ring

Yes, by modern standards, the graphics of The Lord of the Rings — War of the Ring are poor, but in the game itself it is not particularly felt.
