Today we would like to talk with you about a relatively recent way to punish a streamer on Twitch — a shadowban. Since there is no official information from Twitch about it anywhere, we had to go through various sources on our own in order to collect more information about this phenomenon. Let’s figure it out.

What is a shadowban anyway?

Shadowbane (from the English. Shadowbane) — an artificial hiding of your content from the eyes of users. nine0003

The very concept of “shadowbans” first appeared on Instagram and Twitter back in 2018. This restriction was introduced to punish users who violate the rules of social networks. For example, when you get into the shadowban on Instagram, no one except subscribers sees your posts in the feed, they do not fall into the recommendations, it is impossible to find your photos by the hashtag, and therefore the audience reach and the number of new users are reduced. Facebook technical support denied the existence of shadowbans for almost a year and only at the end of 2018 published the reasons why you can get into the Instagram shadowban:

  • Cheat subscribers
  • Using autoposting services
  • Mass complaints
  • Doubtful activity

There is also indirect evidence of the existence of shadowbans on YouTube, when your videos are not shown in the recommended ones, and your broadcasts are not available without a direct link. Many associate them with a change in the policy regarding children’s content, but users believe this is not true. nine0003

What causes a shadowban on Twitch?

The first mention of the shadowban on the web occurs on February 3rd. It was said that Twitch additionally punished the streamer for insults. First, the partner contract was terminated with her, and then, on the first broadcast after the scandal, she found out that her channel was in the shadow bath.

We first encountered the shadowban phenomenon at Reyden-X in March of this year. Shadowbanned streamers were unable to run ad campaigns because our platform checks for stream activity using the Twitch API, and banned channels in the API are offline. In March-April, we encountered several dozen such cases, and if you make a slightly deeper search on the social. networks, you can find as many more. nine0003

So, what does a shadowban on Twitch lead to:

  • No one, including your subscribers, will receive a notification when streams start.
  • Your channel will no longer appear in the selected category (even if there are 3 people streaming there).
  • Also, your followers will not see your active stream in the sidebar, where the list of followed channels is displayed.
  • Your channel on third party services that use the Twitch API will be marked as Offline and may not work properly. nine0016
  • Your channel will not appear in searches (will not give out information that you are online) and in recommendations from Twitch users.
  • Your stream will only be available via a direct link.

Is there a real shadowban on Twitch?

It’s no secret that, unlike Youtube, Twitch’s anti-fraud algorithms were so primitive for a long time that it was not difficult to «deceive» them with simple bots. In 2019At TwitchCon, a Twitch spokesperson said that starting from Q4 2019, Twitch will begin to introduce drastic measures to combat bots and cheating, as well as “smart” auto-moderation of content and streamer actions.

From Twitch itself, there is no official mention of the existence of shadowbans yet. Nevertheless, by indirect evidence, it can be assumed that certain algorithms associated with marking some streams as offline were nevertheless carried out on the side of Twitch in March of this year. In addition, it is possible that Twitch does not plan to disclose information on setting up its shadowban algorithms at all. nine0003

Below are some examples of possible work and problems on Twitch in March, which could occur, among other things, due to setting up and testing the work of shadowbans.

  • At the beginning of March, the European part of the streamers experienced problems with launching streams, and everywhere there were problems with the fact that active streams were marked as offline by Twitch. By the way, on April 17, this problem arose again and was eliminated by technical support.
  • On March 7, many streamers had a problem displaying the correct number of viewers and channel views. On the same day, Twitch technical support fixed this bug. nine0016
  • On March 25, Twitch technical support officially announced that the problems with the offline statuses of active streams have been fixed.
  • On March 28, Twitch released bans for spectator trolls that will not be able to read and write to the streamer’s chat, and both the account and the user’s IP address are banned. However, later that day, Twitch rolled back this release due to various bugs that appeared on many users and streamers. On April 7, this functionality was re-enabled. nine0016

In fact, many streamers mistook the problems imposed by the shadowban for Twitch bugs. After all, if Twitch bans a streamer, then his channel, in principle, becomes unavailable, and a “letter of happiness” comes to the mail. In the case of a shadowban, this does not happen. And the streamer may not know until the last moment that restrictions have been imposed on his channel.

What can I get a shadow ban for?

The most important thing to understand is that the shadowban appears on channel automatic mode. This can happen for a variety of reasons, the most common being complaints from users (this was made clear to us by the Twitch developers when we contacted them about API issues).

There are complaints that should be handled by a Twitch moderator in any case in order to find out the justification of the complaint and decide on the streamer’s ban. And there are complaints that can be moderated automatically based on certain data about the user’s stream. nine0003

Such complaints may include the following:

  • Wrong content classification (wrong category or tags).
  • Online game cheating.
  • The user is using someone else’s trademark, brand or intellectual property.
  • Invalid username.
  • Profile materials (avatar, panels, etc.).
  • Emoticons or icons. nine0016
  • Unacceptable or malicious extensions (including suspicions of cheating online counters with the help of bots, a sharp increase in followers and views from accounts and bot services that are on Twitch’s «black list»).
  • Stolen or hacked account.
  • The user is in violation of the Twitch Developer Agreement.

There are also cases of the so-called «sandbox ban», when a shadow ban (or rather, it can be called restrictive filters) is superimposed on the broadcast of incompletely designed channels, accounts with unconfirmed e-mail, etc. Also, a temporary shadowban can be issued if the stream settings are incorrect or the Internet connection is unstable. In all these cases, the shadowban is issued for a very short period of time (usually 1-2 days). nine0003

If you encounter third-party services, including ours, not seeing that your channel is online on twitch.tv, you can try to write to Twitch support and ask them to check your account with third-party services through the API.

How long does a shadowban last?

Unfortunately, we do not have exact data. In most of the cases we analyzed, the ban lasted from a day to 3 days. However, for some streamers, it lasted until a response came from Twitch technical support about the reason for blocking and lifting the ban. nine0003

Presumably, the duration of the shadowban depends on how good the reason for the restriction was. Bans due to technical reasons usually disappear within a day (due to an incorrectly or incompletely configured broadcast, incorrectly specified category or tags, etc. ).

How can I check my account for a shadowban?

If you suspect that your channel is in the shadowban, you can check it in several ways:

  • Ask someone you know to find your broadcast using the channel name search, or search for it yourself.
  • Ask your followers if they received a notification and if your channel is displayed in the block on the left (where the channels you follow are displayed)
  • While streaming, you can go to https://twitchtracker.com/ or https://sullygnome.com/ and manually check your channel. If, when checking, the services give out information that your stream is Offline, you are in the shadow bath. nine0016

How to get out of the shadowban?

Unfortunately, we cannot give you specific recommendations, because, as mentioned above, the phenomenon is new, and there is not enough information on how to get out of it. If after 1-3 days the stream remains in the ban, then you can contact Twitch technical support through the website of the platform itself, or write to them on Twitter on the @TwitchSupport account.

How to prevent shadowban?

Standard recommendations — don’t use bots to get subscribers, don’t break site rules, don’t provoke your viewers to complain about your channel, try to monitor suspicious activity on your channel, because it often happens that some people specifically order bots to your channel.

When using Reyden-X to attract viewers, increase the value of online evenly with the growth of your channel, you should not order several hundred viewers for a newly created account, this is 90% of cases will look suspicious and viewers may report your channel, and a certain number of complaints may result in an automatic shadowban, despite the fact that using our advertising service is not against Twitch’s rules.

Twitch: how a small channel can gain a foothold on the platform There is no

Hello!

My name is Nastya, better known as Anaskella on Twitch. At the end of spring ’21, I decided to explore the question «What is really important for the viewer on the streams, so that he wants to come back to you and support you?».

I’m a streamer myself and I was interested in understanding which of the most common mechanics that can be found on streams really have an impact on viewers of streamers of a particular genre.

N.B. A full study was conducted according to all the standards of research universities, with theories, frameworks, hypotheses, SPSS and more. At some points, I deliberately omit the explanation, because otherwise the article can be read until tomorrow. nine0003

I’ll make a reservation right away that there is no magic button that you press and your online will immediately increase, and all viewers will start watching only you.

Small channels have a huge advantage — high-quality interaction with the audience. You know your viewers better than anyone because you communicate often. If you want to understand why you are being watched, what your audience likes and what they would like, ask. Get to know your viewers, because behind them are individuals with their own desires and needs, the discovery and understanding of which can help you solve the problem of stagnation and understand how to stream and develop further. nine0003

Which channels were included in the study?

  • Streamer Plays video games 90% of the time. I avoided channels where video games are not a speciality;
  • Streamer plays single-player games alone while communicating with the chat. I didn’t study channels where a lot of people can stream or co-ops often take place — interaction with the chat is worse there;

Total 6 channels (names hidden), average online viewers 25-30 people. nine0003

Influence on which audience was studied?

  • Watches at least 1 hour streams per week to qualify as active;
  • Watching small streamers with up to 100 people online;

A total of 277 people gave representative answers.

What was measured?

Two viewer resources are taken into account: time and money .

Term 9 under consideration0161 «Feeling of community / Feeling of belonging to the channel» consisting of two parts: «The viewer is ready to watch streams of this streamer more often » and «The viewer is ready to become a paid subscriber or donate «.

How was it measured?

The survey offered a description of the mechanics and the choice of the degree of agreement / disagreement with the statement. Those who answered “Does not play a role” did not participate in further analysis.

An example of what the question looked like to viewer

Where are the mechanics from?

In the process of watching several channels and streams, you understand the pattern (I purposefully watched about 30 streams with a notebook in my hands). Experts who now work as community managers and are experienced streamers themselves also helped a lot. Mechanics were divided into mechanics implemented in chat and mechanics implemented by streamers.

Together found 23 mechanics: 13 streamer mechanics, 11 chat mechanics.

What mechanics were studied and what do they mean

Wait, why were they divided into streamer or chat mechanics at all?

The fact is that in my circle of streamers there is a question: is it enough just to contribute as a person, or do you still need to develop the features that it offers. If it’s still not clear, then here’s a clumsy example: is it enough to be a skilled driver to successfully drive any car, or does a lot depend on the car too?

Streamer mechanics:

Implemented by the streamer or in the stream window.

  • Openness. The willingness of the streamer to tell personal stories from life, his experiences, to be open to communication about himself.
  • Frequent communication with the audience. This includes chatting, answering questions on any topic, participating in or initiating a discussion, asking questions in a chat.
  • Streamer’s charisma. Streaming style, voice proficiency, appearance, topics of conversation during the broadcast. In a simple sense, the answer to the question «Do I like the streamer as a person and as a friend?». nine0016
  • Sound alerts on broadcasts and personal thanks for the money spent. This includes «Thank you for follow/subscribe/host/raid/donate/bits» and anything else you can set an alert for. The main thing to remember is that a bunch of and alert, and personal thanks are displayed here.
  • Personal appeals. Personal greetings of viewers with the obligatory mention of a nickname or name (if known and the viewer does not mind), as well as personal questions directed only to this viewer. A good example: you know that your viewer with the nickname Chevapchich has recently returned from vacation and you ask “How did you fly to the sea?”. nine0016
  • Holding special thematic events. Here the event is limited only by the streamer’s imagination, the most common ones are: a week of games chosen by the viewers; challenges from viewers; game auctions; themed game week.
  • The presence of incentives for the money spent. If the viewer has supported financially, he has access to a unique opportunity. Popular manifestations: ordering a game, subdays / weeks, rewarding with a VIP badge.
  • Filled block Bio. nine0162 This is all the field that is located immediately below the stream. Often, streamers write about themselves, the goals of the channel, the schedule, how to support and what benefits this provides, links to social networks. and add some widget.

Example Bio

  • Interaction in games. Playing games with some people from chat, games with chat integration (Dead Cells, Domina). There is an interesting manifestation of the same mechanics, when the names of the viewers from the chat are called game characters. nine0016
  • Presence of a webcam on the stream. With a streamer’s face to convey their emotions, but not a figurine or gif.
  • Presence at other venues. Outside of streaming, viewers need somewhere to gather to communicate with the streamer and each other, or simply to keep up to date. Such platforms can be Discord, Vkontakte, Instagram, Twitter, etc.
  • Charges for a specific purpose. In the common people donatgols and sabgols.
  • Statistics stream on the screen. nine0162 Last follower, last donator, last sub, last host, last raid, total number of subs, and… you can do this ad infinitum. Such statistics are located directly on the game screen, and not on the splash screen.

Chat mechanics:

Chat is a place where viewers write messages (chatbox). When I say chat, I don’t mean people.

  • Atmosphere. Complicated mechanics in which the chat is still people (how famously I am you, huh!). The manner of communication of viewers in the chat, the tone of messages, the topics of communication in the chat. In a simple sense, the answer to the question «Are people pleasant to me in the chat?» nine0016
  • Customized emoticons. Emoticons that are only on this channel and are issued for a paid subscription. Ideally, they should only be associated with a specific channel.
  • Customized icons. Icons near paid subscribers and cheer-donators, which are made for a specific channel theme, and not according to the Twitch template, which simply displays a star.
  • The total collection of channel points. Twitch calls them «Community Challenges» where viewers cumulatively contribute channel points earned towards a specific goal. nine0016
  • Advanced system of rewards for channel points. The minimum number of awards is 5. Customized, different in purpose and value.
  • VIP users. The presence of them in the chat and the viewer’s understanding of how to become one.

Community Trials

  • Interactive chatbot. A bot that can be triggered! teams and play. It is the entertainment component that is important here: roulette, predictions, random text, sound command, another viewer’s trigger, etc.
  • Information bot . He is responsible for information: how to subscribe, what will happen for it, what links to social networks. There are networks, how you can donate, and so on. You can’t have fun with him, but he does an important job — a reminder and information.
  • Hype train function. This is a rare occurrence on small channels. An event activated on the channel when the condition of several simultaneous subscriptions of different viewers is met, the purpose of which is to fill the bar that has appeared in the chat thanks to paid subscriptions and bits-donations. nine0016
  • Voting. Either with a simple answer choice, or with an additional boost and embedding channel points and bits.

Voting

What is really important for the viewer?

Spectators answer.

Everything that is on the left in the table is paramount and important. The rest is a nice bonus and addition, and something even annoying.

I assume that not all streamers can appropriately draw up the statistics of the last action on the stream, which makes it look out of place and rather annoying. nine0003

The same story — purely mathematically, the left side is more important than the right. Logically, they are both valuable and complement each other.

What happens?

The conclusion is simple: both the streamer and the chat are almost equally important in creating a sense of belonging to the channel in the viewer. I advise to use all mechanics that score more than 50% of . If you ever had an idea to score on rewards for channel points with the words “nobody sees them anyway”, remember that 76% of people this mechanic makes them come back to you more often. nine0003

12 streamer mechanic + 11 chat mechanic = very good breeding ground. When I did the research, I called it “powerful basis”.

The situation differs from channel to channel: somewhere certain mechanics will be more significant, somewhere less. It was not for nothing that I mentioned at the beginning that you know your audience best. However, it is worth remembering that they all complement each other and there are no ones that should not be used categorically on your channel.
