Religion, superstition and space / Habr

The same jokes about the firmament, demotivators and irony about the consecration of launch vehicles regularly appear in discussions of domestic space news. There is a feeling that in the minds of a very large number of people there is a myth that cosmonautics was previously driven by pure atheists, and now people have gone wild and began to drag various religious prejudices into space. Alas, this is not at all the case — religion and superstition have long since leaked into space exploration.

Small disclaimer

Since I will talk about things that are not very pleasant for atheists, I will first have to refute suspicions that may arise in a secret religious sermon. I have been an atheist for eight years now, and if you wish, you can even call me an anti-clerical.

In the same publication, I want to talk about the true history of astronautics and a little touch on the question of what to do in such conditions.

Religion

The USSR was officially an atheist country, so we will not see any official religious rites or statements in the history of Soviet cosmonautics. There are many speculations about the religiosity of individuals, but in the absence of reliable facts, it will not be possible to confirm or dispel them. At the same time, in parallel with the Soviet Union, space was being explored by the United States, which at that time was a much more clerical state than it is now. For example, obligatory prayers in schools were canceled only at 1963 year.

The first well-known prayer said before the launch of the rocket was the so-called «Alan Shepard’s Prayer». Preparing for the first American manned suborbital flight on May 5, 1961, Alan uttered the historic phrase «Dear Lord, don’t let me f*ck up» («God, don’t let me screw up»). The negotiations at this stage before the start were not broadcast, so the phrase did not immediately become known, but the abundance of sources does not cast doubt on its authenticity.

The first manned orbital flight was broadcast live, and there was more religion. Engineer Thomas Joseph O’Malley (T. J. O’Malley), pressing the button that starts the rocket launch process, crossed himself and said «Good Lord ride all the way.» «With God blessing!» («Godspeed, John Glenn!») — backup astronaut Scott Carpenter responded and went on to count ten seconds before launch:

Astronaut Gordon Cooper, who made the last flight under the Mercury program, preliminarily wrote and, on the 14th recording a special prayer on the cockpit recorder. I will quote it almost completely, it has a rather unusual, slightly funny and strange text:

“Help us complete this flight successfully. Help us in our future space endeavors so that we can show the world that a democracy can compete and still do things right, can conduct research and development, and can conduct various scientific and high-tech programs in a completely peaceful environment. Be with our families, guide and inspire them and let them know everything will be ok. We trust in your name. Amen».

The first flight to the Moon also did not go without a clerical episode. Apollo 8 astronauts read Genesis live from lunar orbit on Christmas Eve:

Activist Madalyn Murray O’Hair, who in 1963, through the US Supreme Court, achieved the abolition of compulsory prayers in schools, went to court on this issue. The court refused to accept the application, considering that this did not apply to its jurisdiction, but a considerable scandal arose in society, and subsequent religious actions were not broadcast live, or the astronauts changed something so that they could not formally find fault with them.

And Aldrin himself, in his memoirs Magnificent Desolation, writes that if he had the opportunity to replay the flight to the moon of Apollo 11, it is not a fact that he would have repeated this action. Astronauts came to the Moon on behalf of all mankind, of all faiths, but at that moment Aldrin could not think of an action that would better express the uniqueness of the flight. Buzz wanted to express the hope, gratitude and universality of the search, and found nothing better than the Liturgy («common cause») and the Eucharist («gratitude»).

The Same Chalice

The Apollo 15 astronauts named four craters near the landing site Luke, Mark, Matthew, and Index (consonant with the fourth evangelist, John). The fourth name was then approved by the International Astronomical Union, and the crater is now officially called that.

The astronauts themselves were distinguished by a variety of beliefs. John Glenn, Buzz Aldrin and Jim Lovell are Elders (Elders) of the Presbyterian Church. Of the first seven astronauts, Alan Shepard was most likely minimally religious. Gordon Cooper believed passionately in aliens and kept trying to uncover a government conspiracy hiding their existence and the contacts of intelligence agencies and senior government officials with aliens. There is debate about whether Neil Armstrong was a deist (he wrote this in one questionnaire) or an atheist. And, for example, Apollo 15 astronaut James Irwin, after his retirement, became a preacher and for many years missionary work under the motto «The coming of Jesus to Earth is more important than landing a man on the moon.»

The only conclusion that can be drawn from all this is that religious beliefs (or lack of them) did not prevent the astronauts from doing their job perfectly.

Superstitions

The formally declared one hundred percent atheism in the Soviet Union, alas, had a very mediocre relationship to reality. What, besides religions, should an atheist fight? With superstitions, signs and other prejudices. And, alas, the abundance of facts says that a variety of superstitions flourished in the domestic astronautics. Many years later, some superstitions have become traditions, which, however, does not negate the initially irrational reasons for their appearance.

The titan of the Soviet cosmonautics, Sergei Pavlovich Korolev, was not distinguished by the absolute atheistic purity of his actions. Many sources write that he did not allow launches to be scheduled for Mondays, did not like the appearance of women on the launch pad (and forbade one engineer to appear there, during which some kind of trouble occurred), believed in the «light hand» of Captain Smirnitsky.

From Korolev’s immediate associates, it is reliably known that Boris Chertok and Leonid Voskresensky were atheists. There is a very funny moment in Chertok’s memoirs “Rockets and People” when, celebrating Titov’s successful flight in the Kremlin, Voskresensky, seeing Rauschenbach talking with the heads of three religious denominations, suggested, following the experience of Ostap Bender, to chant “There is no God!” and «Religion is the opium of the people!» Vigilant wives stopped the idea. And Chertok himself, finding himself at the table opposite the rabbi and the mufti, raised a toast to the fact that Titov had not seen any God in space for a day.

Modern manned launches are surrounded by traditions and rituals that have grown out of superstition. There are widely known traditions to watch the “White Sun of the Desert” before the start, sign on the door of the hotel, leave the building under the “Earth in the porthole”, urinate on the bus wheel (in this case, the previously carried out test of the tightness of the spacesuits is lost, and it has to be done again). And female astronauts are rumored to carry a jar of urine with them on the bus to water the wheel and perform the ritual.

The ship itself has been inhabited for many years by a hybrid of a talisman, psychological support and a useful device — a soft toy that pleases people and serves as a kind of «indicator of weightlessness».

And aviation superstitions seeped into astronautics, they also like to say “extreme” instead of “last”.

After the disasters of Soyuz-1 (call sign Rubin) and Soyuz-11 (call sign Yantar), call signs with the names of precious stones were banned for a very long time. Also, after the early return from orbit of cosmonaut Vitaly Zholobov, mustaches were banned. But these superstitions have already died out, now the Soyuz TMA-19 crew is in orbitM” with the call sign “Agat”, and a lot of mustachioed astronauts have visited the ISS in recent years.

In 2006 Roscosmos TV even made a film about traditions and superstitions:

Unmanned launches also have enough superstitions. At the Plesetsk cosmodrome, on the frost covering the rocket, they always write «Tanya». Naturally, there is mythology, they say, once they didn’t write, and the rocket didn’t fly away. At the Kapustin Yar test site, a matchbox is still placed on the remote control, on which the date of the last successful launch is written.

Superstitions have not bypassed the Americans either. Here is a jar of peanuts prepared for the landing of the Curiosity rover:

This superstition comes from the Ranger program (photographing the visible side of the moon from ever lower altitude) when the first launches were unsuccessful. Someone brought peanuts to the next launch, the station worked successfully, and now they eat peanuts “for good luck” at the MCC before the start of the main mission of the spacecraft. In the American manned program, there was traditional food, the tradition of playing cards before launch, the tradition of waking up the crew with music, and much more. But it is very bitter to watch how the astronauts of the STS-107 mission (the shuttle Columbia, which collapsed and burned up in the atmosphere), leaving for a flight from which they will never return, touch the door jamb “for good luck”.

Astronauts participate in PR activities and regularly write down appeals to various holidays and events. Sergius of Radonezh cannot be erased from the history of Russia, and, probably, it would be wrong. Naturally, for such an appeal, they brought and placed all the icons that were on the ISS at that moment. In everyday life, icons catch the eye much less often. The Zvezda service module, where most calls are recorded, now has photographs of Tsiolkovsky, Gagarin, and Korolev. Above, far from always falling into the frame, hangs a cross; it has been in orbit for more than ten years. In general, if you look at the history of photo changes from the place where video messages are most often held, you get the feeling that the crew places objects there at will — there can be mission emblems, country flags, photographs, ship models, icons. And if you carefully watched the film above, you noticed that in the cabin of Mikhail Kornienko there is a small icon that refers to his personal belongings.

What to do?

I don’t know, fortunately or unfortunately, but people of different religious beliefs successfully explored space, the only significant factor was their professionalism. Astronaut Chris Hadfield’s book The Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth argues that seeing the cosmos only confirms one’s pre-existing religious beliefs, and I tend to agree based on personal experience. Both an atheist and a believer can show people cosmic beauties, and both of them will find confirmation of their views. Seriously, for example, a creationist astroclub of Seventh-day Adventists has been operating in Kyiv for many years, which holds sidewalk astronomy evenings (I wonder if local atheists have a comparable answer?). At the same time, the study of the cosmos, like other achievements of science, has already made it impossible to literally understand the sacred books.
