Tips and tricks for Zelda: Skyward Sword

Here are some tips and tricks which will help you complete Link’s quest in Skyward Sword:

  • Remember to change your shield! Aside from the Hylian Shield, there are three main shield types you’ll use in Skyward Sword — Wooden, Iron and Sacred. Each one has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, so it’s always a good idea to ensure you have the right shield before leaving Skyloft.
  • Repair your shield. Most of the shields in Skyward Sword have a health metre, which decreases as they take damage. Thankfully, your shield can be repaired at the Scrap Shop in the Skyloft bazaar.
  • Upgrade your items! Many of the items you find in Skyward Sword can be upgraded in the Scrap Shop in the bazaar. Doing this will increase the abilities of said item — from its speed to the amount of damage they deal.
  • Have a variety of potions on hand. Potions will grant health, stamina and even make Link invincible for a small amount of time. You can even enhance their effects by bringing the potion makers in the Skyloft bazaar specific bugs.
  • Always remember to organise your Adventure Pouch before leaving Skyloft! You can only bring a certain number of additional items with you, so make sure you bring at least one potion, a shield and any medals or items like additional bomb bags.
  • Collect every Heart Piece you see. Collecting four Heart Pieces will increase Link’s health metre by one Heart Container, which will help you survive the toughest of boss battles.
  • Hit every Goddess Cube with a Skyward Strike. Throughout the surface world, you’ll find grey Goddess Cubes, which, when hit with a Skyward Strike, will unlock a chest in the sky. These chests hold a variety of useful items — from Heart Pieces to Rupees — so make sure you hit every one.
  • Catch bugs when you see them! While bugs can be used to enhance potions, collecting them can involve a bit of backtracking. For this reason, it’s a good idea to catch a bug whenever you see it.
  • Sell extra bugs and materials for Rupees. If you’re in need of extra Rupees, then explore Skyloft during the night. Strich, who lives in the Knight’s Academy, will buy three randomly selected bugs, while Rupin, who runs a shop in the bazaar by day, will buy four random materials.
  • Carry medals in your Adventure Pouch for bonuses. From an extra heart to increasing the duration of specific potions, medals provide you with useful bonuses throughout Skyward Sword. You can find medals in chests or purchase them from Beedle’s Airshop.
  • Talk to Fi if you’re well and truly stuck. Fi is always there to point you in the right direction or give you hints about what’s occurring on Skyloft.

Have fun in Skyward Sword!

The Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild 2 are inherently opposite

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD and Breath of the Wild 2 may come out a year apart, and it’s amazing how different they are.

After years of waiting, Zelda fans have finally made it to The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD . This will be the final version of the game with many updates. Last but not least is a new control scheme that removes the motion controls that were causing problems for some players in the original game. This is sure to help a lot of new players ease their way into Skyward Sword and maybe even give veterans a smoother experience. Now that the 35th anniversary of Zelda is approaching, it’s time to get back to the game that explains how Zelda all started.

This isn’t the only game, however Zelda fans are looking forward to it right now. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is expected to be at E3 and the fans are very excited about it. As a direct continuation of the most popular of the game Zelda , and the one that reinvented the franchise by turning it into an open world, this game is causing a lot of excitement. Breath of the Wild is famous for how it took Zelda and the open world formulas and combined them into something that works surprisingly well. It owes a surprising amount of mechanics to the Skyward Sword , including its stamina and gear upgrade systems. However, these two entries are probably the most different in the franchise, and each is filled with diametrically opposed

.

Sky Sword and Breath of the Wild Start and end of the Zelda timeline

scale. Skyward Sword is positioned as the earliest game in the Zelda timeline, and before the release of the short prequel manga at Hyrule Historia she was the earliest part of the Zelda media period. Skyward Sword explains how the Master Sword was created, how Hyrule was founded, and how the eternal conflict between Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf began.

Breath of the Wild , meanwhile, seems to happen after each timeline ends. Hyrule still exists, but the royal family has pretty much killed themselves by Calamity Ganon. Hyrule is littered with fragments of the past. It is not entirely clear how0007 BotW is on schedule, but definitely far enough away that no other games other than its sequel will take place after it.

Heavenly Sword and Breath of the Wild use their characters differently

Another obvious difference between these games is the use of characters in their settings. How the different races or their equivalents are presented is one thing (down to the different approaches to elemental dragons in each game), but there’s also how the characters are positioned. AT Skyward Sword Skyloft is a complete hub full of useful characters that Link is expected to return to many times over. In addition, there is also Fi, Link’s constant companion and adviser.

Breath of the Wild is the closest equivalent to the horse Link licensed, and they definitely don’t talk. Sure, there are NPCs scattered throughout the game, and there’s even a hub of sorts in the form of Kakariko, but the only person Link has to talk to is the Old Man. BotW is a much more solitary adventure, but at the same time, the player has a lot of time alone with his thoughts and plans. BotW 2 may have Zelda, but it must be assumed that Nintendo will try to keep the atmosphere of the first game and not let it interrupt any travel.

Heaven Sword and Breath Of The Wild Have Very Different Worlds0043

And they should use this time to make those plans. Path Breath of the Wild and Heavenly Sword manage their development, and the design of the world is completely different despite the best intentions of Heavenly Sword . This game seems to be trying to present an image of a huge interactive world, but it often ends up being incredibly linear and directional. The player always needs to complete some kind of task or use a certain item in order to move forward.

Breath of the Wild takes care of the players completing their training and infiltrating Hyrule Castle to defeat Ganon. Everything in between these two points is up to the player, and there is always more than one way to complete any given objective. This sheer non-linearity is the main reason the game is so loved, although many hope that some excellent Zelda dungeons like those from Skyward Sword may return in the sequel.

Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild have opposite villains

Each hero is only as good as his villain, and Skyward Sword definitely fits on that front. Ghirahim and Demis are charismatic and dangerous, and their presence is felt throughout the game when they engage Link in combat. Ghirahim carries the weight of himself, Demis, Link, and Fi for most of the game, overacting even without a voice and luring Link out. This person is also very unique in that he engages Link in combat as soon as he can and then returns to the minions when he fails. Death does not manifest properly until the finale, but the severity of its appearance cannot be underestimated.

This is in stark contrast to the original power, which is Calamity BotW Ganon, who is more of a natural disaster than a human. His various boss incarnations are more like Demise’s mute sharpened form than Demise himself, and while his Malevolence is ubiquitous, his presence is not. Let’s hope BotW 2’s new villain (who might turn out to be Ganondorf again) can support his ending better than Calamity.

Heavenly Sword and Breath of the Wild have different tricks

The last big difference between these games is their handling and item handling. Skyward Sword distributes items in the traditional Zelda way, with the items given to Link when he needs them to progress. This is again part of its linear character. Breath of the Wild , meanwhile, gives Link all the tools he needs up front and allows players to gather more power at their leisure.

What really sets the Skyward Sword apart is its reliance on motion controls. Even in the HD version, where they can be replaced at will, their influence will be felt throughout. Link constantly uses them to manipulate objects, move around the environment, and fight enemies. The most comparable features in the Breath of the Wild are climbing, parasailing, and possibly weapon durability, and even those aren’t around at all times. It’s still too early to tell what place the magic hand occupies here BotW 2 , but she can grant Link some vital abilities right from the start. Breath of the Wild is largely devoid of gimmicks and forced playstyles, which, while not guaranteed to be universally loved, have earned much more praise than SkywardSword .

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD will be released for Nintendo Switch on July 16th. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is in development for the Switch.

Skyward Sword HD. How the great

series began

Legend of Zelda is a truly legendary game series that managed to win the loyalty of millions of fans around the world with its deep world development, unique mechanics and puzzles, and addictive gameplay. Having sold over 120 million copies in total, it not only brought success to Nintendo, but also largely determined the vector of development for the industry. Almost every part of the saga at one time headed various tops, and Breath of the Wild was even recognized as the best game of the generation.

Introduction

Every legend must have a beginning, and for Zelda, Skyward Sword was released to mark the 25th anniversary of Link’s adventure on the Wii platform. Having received high marks from critics and players, it still did not gain the deserved popularity: the game appeared already at the end of the console life cycle, and besides, not everyone liked the local motion-control: it’s one thing to wave the controller for five minutes in some arcade, but not at all the other — during many hours of running around the vast world.

The release of Breath of the Wild caused a new surge of interest in the franchise, and Nintendo rightly decided to give the Sky Sword a second chance. Now, on the 35th anniversary of the series, a remaster of Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD has been released on the Switch, in which they added classic controls, fixed most of the shortcomings and bugs of the original, significantly “tightened up” the graphics, and finally taught the characters the Russian language.

Plot

The plot takes us many millennia back from the events of Breath of the Wild. In those ancient times, people lived in heaven in the city of Skyland, Zelda was not a princess, and Link had not yet saved the world. Our protagonist is still only a student at the knight’s academy, and is only preparing to become a member of an elite organization of air horsemen, who cut through the skies on their intelligent birds — skywings.

Link and Zelda, during a romantic walk (unlike in other games, here they have tender feelings for each other), are caught off guard by a strong tornado. The girl falls from a great height onto an uncharted land, about which only legends circulate in the heavenly city. Link rushes after her friend, but loses consciousness and comes to his senses only at the academy. Our brave hero, having got hold of a magic sword and stocked up with decoctions, goes to save the girl, at the same time trying to uncover the secret: why the heavens and the surface were separated for centuries.

The world in Skyward Sword is not as open as in the same Breath of the Wild, but the story itself is much better worked out here. Throughout his long journey, the player learns a lot about the history of the universe, its gods, demons and prophecies, running like a red line through the entire series. We will be told how the long-suffering state of Hyrule began to form, as well as about the curse that is designed to bring the main characters together with their antagonist over and over again.

Skyland plays the role of a hub here, where you can relax, buy equipment or discuss something with the locals. The rest of the world, divided into three huge locations (plains, desert and volcano), is replete with abandoned ruins with a variety of puzzles and, of course, hungry monsters. We will be allowed to move not only on our own feet, but also astride a skywing. The level design is well developed: they are full of endless forks, secrets and obstacles. Although you will have to run through each zone many times, it does not bother you — there are always unnoticed or previously unavailable “paths” leading to new adventures

Quests are very inventive and interesting, and no one is going to lead them by the hand. A striking example is the task of rescuing a child from a demon, which requires long investigations and searches, and leads to a completely unexpected denouement. Some quests are a bit long, but due to the interesting story, this will not be critical. As a reward for completing tasks, the hero receives gratitude crystals, which can later be exchanged for a number of rare and useful items.

The characters here are deep and «alive», many of them are able to react to the random actions of the player: breaking a pot can attract the attention of others, and if Link, in an attempt to collect the local currency — rupees, drops the chandelier in the tavern, the owner will definitely force deal with the damage.

Gameplay

When solving interesting and quite logical puzzles, the player will need not only ingenuity, but also various devices, such as bombs, a net for catching insects or a mechanical beetle, with which you can activate inaccessible switches. I was most impressed by the mechanics of time crystals, which transfer the space around them to the past: if there was once an ocean in the place of the desert, then why not sail on it on a ship? The game is constantly changing, offering users new techniques and not letting them get bored.

Many of the gameplay elements so beloved by players in Breath of the Wild were first implemented in Skyward Sword: a glider that allows you to cushion falls, a stamina bar that is spent on overcoming obstacles, shields that break when used, and more. Gadgets and potions can be upgraded to increase their effectiveness. This will require not only rupees, but also ingredients collected during the adventure.

Among the innovations, it is also worth noting the appearance of three slots for saves and autosave. Now you can skip lines in dialogs and intros, descriptions of items appear only when you find them for the first time, and Fai’s assistant does not stick on every occasion and without. All this was very annoying in the original. If you are the lucky owner of an amiibo figure, then the option to teleport to Heaven at any time is added.

Combat system

One of the highlights of the game is the motion control system. Keeping in mind the questions that arose for the original, the developers offered users two schemes at once. By picking up a joycon, you can interact with the game in the same way as once on the Wii — by waving your hands. At the same time, the controllers will track the position much more accurately than the Wii Motion Plus. We also added the ability to control objects using a gyroscope and rotate the camera.

The second method involves using the right stick to strike with the weapon, which sounds pretty logical. But you just need to not only deflect the latter in the right direction, but first swing, and only then move sharply in the direction of the attack. At the same time, if you make movements slowly, then our hero will not hit anyone, but will just be funny to drive a sword. I’m not sure that the controller in this mode will withstand all 50 hours of gameplay. In addition, to look around, you need to use the same right stick only with the “shift”, which is not very convenient.

Be that as it may, but such management made the combat system very interesting and diverse. For convenience in battles, you can select a specific opponent so that Link always turns to face him. The protagonist can cut horizontally, vertically, diagonally, and also lunges. The most effective, but energy-consuming circular attack deals damage to everyone around. There were finishing moves, and with the help of a shield, the control of which is tied to the left stick, you can parry blows and stun opponents.

Some enemies can only be defeated by finding gaps in their defenses and striking in a certain direction. If you swing the sword randomly, then the attacks will simply be blocked. Sometimes an opponent needs to be knocked out first in order to then poke in a weak spot. By holding the sword vertically, you can charge it with energy to increase your attack. If all this should be taken into account in the fight against ordinary opponents, then what can we say about bosses — everything is much more complicated and interesting there, and it is unlikely that you will be able to win without ingenuity. Motion-control is involved not only in battles, but also when flying on a skywing, throwing bombs, catching with a net and much more.

Graphics, sound, localization

Visually, the game has been improved and transformed: the original Skyward Sword for Wii ran at 480p at 30 frames per second. Now it’s full-fledged 1080p in the hospital and 720p in portable mode, and even with 60 frames. Part of the textures and special effects have also been reworked: what are the hair developing in the wind and realistic shadows. The remaster does not look like a project from the distant past, wrapped in a beautiful candy wrapper, but like a modern game. I also note that in each of the console modes, all texts are well read.

The series has always been famous for its great soundtrack, but in this game, the music is simply perfectly matched to what is happening on the screen, and often simply mesmerizing. No wonder compositions from it are often performed at concert venues. The reissue added support for surround sound, so home theater owners can only envy.

Talking about Skyward Sword HD, it is impossible not to mention Russian localization, because for a story-oriented game, its presence is very important. The translation was done with high quality, with soul, humor and without obvious blunders. Localization touched only the text — the voice acting remained original, but there is not very much of it in the game: Link simply does not talk, and the rest of the characters make only one cry or sigh at the beginning of the dialogues.

Conclusion

Skyward Sword was a great game with great story, characters, atmosphere and gameplay.
