The expanse game: A Telltale Series – Telltale Games

The game based on The Expanse looks pretty decent, especially the zero-G bits

In December, the new Telltale Games—a studio built from some of the pieces left behind when the original developer shut down—announced that it’s making an adventure series based on The Expanse, the six-season sci-fi show that was recently concluded by Amazon Studios.

I thought it was smart to make Camina Drummer the main character (who would rather play as pouty-boy James Holden?) and now that we have a proper look at The Expanse: A Telltale Series in the Gamescom trailer embedded above, I’m mildly excited to play it.

In the trailer, game director Stephan Frost says he’s «super excited» for the zero-G bits of the game. I was glad to hear that, because I’ve always loved a good zero-G section myself—it’s the best part of the first Dead Space—and you really couldn’t make a game based on The Expanse without some floating.

The show (and I presume the novels, which I haven’t read) is all about imagining the weird problems involved with interplanetary travel and space life, such as how human bones might develop differently in low gravity, how ships might be designed to use acceleration as gravity, and how people would survive the G-forces caused by extreme space maneuvering. The latter problem is solved with magic liquid, so it’s not all science-ey, but I enjoy the bits where The Expanse doesn’t cheat too much. It looks like Telltale sees the same appeal in the source material, and there may be some pretty big wrecks to explore—spacious environments aren’t something Telltale is known for, and perhaps an indication that we’re not entirely getting more of the same here.

I also like that it looks pretty gross. You’re not going to scavenge from wrecked spaceships without seeing some floating bodies, and indeed, there are floating bodies. Floating heads, too. (For some reason—maybe due to a superficial association with a cartoon dog—I have a kid-friendly image of Telltale in my mind. That’s never been true, but the floating heads still came as a small surprise.)

There’s a lot of activity around Telltale and its past right now. Another Telltale game, Tales from the Borderlands, is getting a sequel called New Tales from the Borderlands, but that’s being developed by Gearbox (who hired some devs from the original game). Meanwhile, a studio formed by ex-Telltale devs, called Adhoc, is working on a sequel to Telltale’s The Wolf Among Us with support from the new Telltale.

I’m glad the plate of intellectual property spaghetti formed by Telltale’s closure seems to be working out, at least for the moment and for some of the former staff. The Expanse: A Telltale Series is scheduled to release in Summer 2023 (or the first episode, at least, if they’re released over time).

The Expanse Telltale Series Trailer, News & Latest Updates

Fans of Telltale Games and the Prime Video series, The Expanse had reason to celebrate at the 2021 Game Awards. Not only is Telltale back, thanks to its new parent company, LCG Entertainment, but its first new game series announcement was The Expanse: A Telltale Series. Serving as a prequel to the Prime series, which recently aired its sixth and final season, the game looks to be a faithful adaptation of the universe and characters from the show, which are in turn based on those from the novels by James S. A. Corey.

Telltale Games has a long and storied history of adapting high-profile, licensed properties into episodic video games. Its previous releases include original stories based on such franchises as Batman, Game of Thrones, Guardians of the Galaxy and the company’s mainstay license, The Walking Dead. However, due to financial troubles, the company closed its doors in 2018, canceling many of its ongoing projects. The Expanse is the first sign of new life from the developer, and if its trailer is any indication, Telltale’s still got the goods. Here’s everything we know so far about the game.

The Expanse: A Telltale Series’ Trailer

Unveiled along with the game’s announcement during The Game Awards 2021, The Expanse‘s first trailer is only a minute long and doesn’t reveal much about its plot. It begins with a raspy male voiceover speaking to someone about what he’s heard regarding them. Among the things he mentions throughout the trailer is that the person is a rockhopper, has worked the docks on Ceres (a space station on an asteroid), and was an «attack dog» for Dawes, probably referring to Anderson Dawes, who was the leader of the OPA (Outer Planet Alliance) on The Expanse TV series.

The Belter Scavenger ship, the Artemis, is shown flying near Jupiter. A pair of magnetic boots touch down on a metal catwalk, and the mysterious figure walks toward a closed airlock holding a man pounding desperately on the window. The offscreen voice continues, saying «So, you don’t have any problem killing Inners or Belters who disagree with the OBA.»

There are shots of dead bodies floating through the corridor in zero gravity, their helmet faceplates smashed in. The person walking along the catwalk catches a floating bullet in their hand, and the trailer reveals them to be fan-favorite character Camina Drummer. The man speaking then notes that he has difficulty knowing if everything he’s heard about her is true, and Drummer replies, «Truth is truth. How you deal with it is up to you, Bosmang.» She then hits the airlock release button, sending the trapped individual into the coldness of space.

A new trailer for the game dropped during Gamescom 2022 Opening Night Live featuring fresh plot details and some gameplay footage. A scuffle breaks out aboard The Artemis between Drummer, a man threatening her with a gun, and a couple of other crew mates. Drummer is also shown tending to an injured man with a ripped spacesuit. Cara Gee, who voices Drummer speaks about how players will get to see the character’s more vulnerable sides, as «by the time we meet her in the series, they’ve been cauterized,» a comment on the character’s thorny demeanor.

The developers also speak during the video, talking about such features as floating through Zero-G environments and exploring exploded ship parts in space. Drummer is seen navigating through ship corridors and amongst some wreckage in a spacesuit. She comes upon a derelict ship of full dead crew members floating about. Zak Garris, V.P. of Story Development for Telltale, describes the experience as Drummer being «among their ghosts,» as encountering dead bodies is pretty common in the world of scavenging. At the end of the trailer, Drummer finds a room full of floating decapitated heads, which is a strong hint that there is a dangerous menace on the horizon.

What Is The Expanse: A Telltale Series About?

Telltales’ The Expanse will be a prequel to the Prime Video series of the same name. It’s set in a sci-fi future where mankind has accomplished travel throughout the solar system and has formed three warring factions: those who call Earth home, the people who have colonized and are living on Mars, and the Belters, who work and live in and around the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Drummer, played by Cara Gee on the show, is a proud and fierce Belter, and a leader to her people in many capacities.

Drummer’s younger self looks to be the XO on the Artemis in Telltale’s game. According to the official synopsis, a mutiny breaks out aboard the ship, and it is up to the player, in the boots of Drummer, to quell the violence and decide the fate of the Artemis and her crew. This is very much in line with past Telltale titles, where the player’s choices were key to the storyline and affected everything that happened thereafter.

As mentioned, Cara Gee will be reprising her role as Drummer for the game. Jeff Litchford, COO of Deck Nine, which is working in tandem with Telltale on the game, stated, «We wanted to pick a character and story that hadn’t already been told — one that players could really influence but that also stayed true to the books and series for the fans.» Alcon Entertainment, producers of The Expanse TV series are also collaborating on the game.

With the release of the Gamescom footage, a few more details about the plot were revealed. It turns out the man that Drummer shot out of the airlock in the previous trailer had tried to hijack control of the Artemis in order to go after «the greatest score any scavenger has ever come across.» This indicates at least a subplot involving a major scavenging opportunity to pursue. Additionally, the decapitated heads that Drummer discovers could point to a psychotic big bad or even some sort of creature that must be defeated.

When Does The Expanse: A Telltale Series Release?

The Gamescom trailer revealed that The Expanse will release in summer 2023. It should also be noted that, as a Telltale series, fans should expect the game to release episodically, with single episodes dropping periodically over a number of months, as has been the company’s method in the past.

Diagnosis on the box: «Green expanses» — Queen of the fields

I often joke here about the fact that no one sends me games for review. On the one hand, they say, a non-selling blogger, oh-hoo and hehehehe, and on the other hand, if you think about it, somehow it turns out not to be a blogger at all if it is not recognized by publishers …

But recently I was pleasantly surprised and flattered by an offer to send games. It was Gaga, and I myself chose what to send, because I am not ready to play something that does not attract me, even for free and for sport. I still have my favorite collection not played often enough, and there is no more time.

In general, I asked for a couple of boxes, and one of them is “Green Spaces”, about which I heard various conflicting opinions, and I wanted to find out for myself what and how. nine0003

Played: 2 games with 2 players (it’s impossible to play with a large squad, below is one of the reasons) And, by the way, thanks to the commentator from Tesera, who pushed me to write these fresh impressions, it turns out that they are even more interesting to someone than impressions after 10 games 🙂

What I didn’t like

I’ll start with the bad, because this is the first thing you notice when you pick up the game.

Huge empty box. I understand all this marketing, but such a grotesque ratio of filling and air, even compared to other games, is rare. Judge for yourself! nine0003

It would seem…

…but in reality.

i.e. there is not even a large field, as in the same «Crime Scene», which could justify the size of the box … For everyone who, like me, the shelves are full of games, the question of the space occupied by the boxes rises quite sharply and it is a pity that the publisher didn’t take care of us 🙁

• The second problem, funny as it may seem, is also related to the size, but this time with a huge space on the table, which is required for the game itself ! Here’s a paradox. Together we more or less fit on our table, but I don’t know how to play with 4. On the floor, probably only 🙁 Well, very huge farms become by the end of the game.

As expected, we played it «in the open» 🙂

• At the same time, the font on the cards is small , it’s good if you can read all your cards, and don’t even try to see what your opponent has there.

• But on the other hand, each literally digs in his own garden most of the time, so it doesn’t really matter to you what your neighbor has there. There is interaction here at the time of the draft, and only, and even then, in the “Expansions” it seemed more profitable to take something for yourself than “hat-draft”, i.e. deliberately withdrawing a card that will bring more points to the opponent, because it may not suit you at all. Only if you «sell» it or put it into a pumping station or a silo, and this may not be what you need at this moment. nine0003

Neutral

Theme and theme. I’m not a big fan of rural games, but I only have one of two or three of these boxes on my shelves, so the theme evokes neutral feelings. If I already had Agricola, Reykholt and a thousand other variations in this setting, I probably wouldn’t even look at Green Spaces.

And the theme of the maps is questionable. Some are even less so (like geese that need to be near water), but for most the property is not related to what animal/plant they represent. It’s a pity. nine0003

Draft as a mechanic. Again, I’m not a big fan of this mechanic as such, and I have several other games with it in my collection, no more. Plus, something we didn’t see in the draft. If only he was here, I wouldn’t be interested.

Decoration. On Instagram, they left me a comment under the photo of this game that, based on the illustrations, they thought it was an add-on to Winemaking, and, you know, I agree. The design does not shine, but it exudes some kind of rural idyllic comfort. It’s nice to see in the pictures all this small living creatures, fields, houses. Very calming 🙂

Liked

Spatial element. But what made this game attractive to me is that we don’t just draft cards, we put them on the table in the form of a farm, and moreover, the location of the cards relative to each other is very important here! Most cards have a property that works depending on which cards are next to or, conversely, which cards are not next to . Well, it’s cool.

And also, well, I really liked the moment from water towers and how they should be located a maximum of 2 maps from fields that are irrigated, and at the same time, each field must be irrigated every year (there are 4 in total), otherwise it will not bring anything useful and will completely dry up! The fields themselves are needed in order to produce food that can be fed to animals and thus exchanged for money / points. Those. irrigating the fields is very important, one or two fields that you could not water can break your entire engine for a year. And this directly adds to the crisis, planning and strategy, because it’s not enough to draft good cards, they also need to be positioned so that they work. Very well. nine0003

• Players decide how many types of cards will participate in the round. And this is also a very cool moment, because out of 4 types — animals, fields, buildings and buildings — at the beginning of each game «year» cards are chosen consciously by the players themselves. It’s nice and right that we are allowed to level the randomness at the output of cards and make plans for the future.

Engine. We are building a farm not just for the sake of interest, but in order to “activate” it 4 times per game and collect a “harvest” from it in the form of victory points. And this in itself is more interesting than if we got points once when building cards (although there are such ones here). nine0003

I was asked on instagram if the game feels monotonous due to the activation of the engine over and over again. I must admit that it didn’t seem that way to me for our games. Perhaps if there were more years, and we would have activated the chain 6 times or more, then this would have bothered. And here, consider, only normally built, just adjusted, and already the end.

• Another nice thing is that farm activation can be done in parallel, and it doesn’t eat up party time. This is another plus of the game — it feels quite complex and thought-provoking, and at the same time fits within less than an hour of .

Variation and replay value. I wouldn’t call the properties of the cards super interesting or unusual, but due to the fact that they will come out differently every game, the games will feel fresh time after time. Today I have tomatoes, oats, and cows, and tomorrow I have pumpkins, apple trees, and ducks, and since each type of animal and field requires a different “landscape” of the farm to work properly, no two are the same. And the buildings that bring points are also different. Accordingly, the replay value is on top. nine0003

Playing games like this always makes me feel like, “Mmm, what can I do today? What can I make of this? Let’s see!» I love that feeling in games.

Rules for two. When I read the rules of the game (before the purchase, I almost never do this, and I didn’t do it here either), I felt sad: draft! So, there will be some kind of crutches for two, or it will not be interesting at all …

Everything turned out to be much better, I was just pleasantly surprised. All they did was replace the closed draft with an open one, and voila! No crutches, it turns out even more interesting. Yes, and together it is easier to keep track of the enemy’s farm and cut the cards that are very necessary for him. nine0003

I did not expect this, but I have a strong feeling that I will want to play this game only with two people in principle. But for three or four, with great pleasure, I will decompose the “Kingdom of Rabbits”, which have sunk into my soul very much.

Diagnosis

«Green spaces» is a simple game for drafting cards, laying them out in a single «farm», taking into account the connections and mutual arrangement between the elements, and the activation of the resulting engine.

Nothing particularly unusual on its own, but a mixture of mechanics and nice elements like the conscious choice of card types, the importance of the location of cards relative to each other, the variability, the speed of the game give us a good solid game that we want to lay out again.
