Doom 3 as stability test
In this article, as you probably already guessed, dear reader, the place of Doom 3 in the overclocker’s software set, its sensitivity to the instability of certain system components is discussed. Test programs in general will also be affected. I was inspired to write this article by several interesting features of the ID Software game that I observed on my system.
- Delta DPS
- Abit NF-7S
- Athlon XP 2500 @ 2.3 GHz
- Gigabyte 3D ULTRA cooler
- 2x256MB Kingston HyperX PC2700 @ 400 MHz dual channel(2.5/3/3/6)
- SaphireRadeon 9800 @ Radeon 9800 PRO
- Asus DRW 0402PD
- Seagate Baracuda IV
I must immediately make a reservation, only one system took part in the «research», mine. Although some of what is described in this article is implicitly confirmed by Activision technical support, the author DOES NOT GUARANTEE the reproducibility of these observations on any other system. So, let’s begin. nine0003
Introduction
Perhaps experienced people should skip this part, but beginners can use a little theoretical digression. It is quite obvious that the same components are subjected to testing as overclocking. So, for testing, the most interesting are the processor, RAM and video card.
Testing of RAM is carried out by such programs as testmem 4, and the leading dog breeders advise driving the test for a very, very long time, for complete «iron» confidence. Another nice memory test tm4 is included as a module in the S&M program, and you should not neglect it (as well as anything in this program), IMHO. Recommended testing time: «long» mode in S&M or 1.5-2 hours to run testmem. nine0003
Processor testing is a slightly more interesting topic of conversation. You should start with the fact that all programs for checking the processor should be conditionally divided into «warm-up tests» and «correctness tests». This division is rather arbitrary, since the S&M program performs both of these tasks.
Warm-up tests are in fact a test of the cooling system, since their main task is to maximize processor heating using a specially selected set of commands and nothing more. In the event that the instability (i.e., distortions in the calculations) is not of a gross nature, the warmer program can work more or less successfully. BurnK7 can be considered a characteristic representative of this group, however, it loses to the S&M complex test utility in terms of processor warming up efficiency. nine0003
The second group is a bit more complicated. These programs exist in order to detect «subclinical» (non-obvious under more or less normal conditions) forms of processor instability. Most often, this situation occurs when there is insufficient voltage on the core. These programs perform some (preferably extremely complex) calculations, the result of which is known and «stored» by them in advance, after the calculation, the program compares the result with the reference one and, if there is a discrepancy, issues an error message. Representatives of this group are Prime 95 and again S&M. Let me tell you a little more about each of them.
Prime 95 was originally created for mathematical research using distributed computing, namely the search for Mersenne primes (which, if you are curious, are prime numbers represented as 2 to the power of p minus 1, where p is also prime) for the sake of a prize $100,000 for the first ten million digit Mersen number found, and $5,000 for each new one. However, the program includes a test that works according to the above scheme and allows you to find failures in the system with high accuracy. It should be emphasized that although this program has several modes of testing (with minimal, small and significant memory usage), its result is ALWAYS is sensitive to the state of RAM (it’s just not noticeable in the minimum RAM usage mode) and therefore RAM should be carefully eliminated from testing to reliably check the stability of the processor. Interestingly, the priority of the program can be set only by entering the password 9876. The recommended testing time is 3-24 hours or more, depending on the paranoia of a single overclocker. Often launched with 3DMark (for reasons of reinsurance).
S&M, a program with a promising name 😉 , has great functionality, is considered the leader among programs aimed at warming up the processor, the processor test practically does not depend on the state of the RAM, it has a very worthy stability check, as well as a memory test and a lot of pleasant, convenient little things like monitoring with the ability to stop when overheating. Checking for errors is done by executing a set of FPU commands followed by checking. Interestingly, this program detects processor errors on K7 somewhat more efficiently than Prime95 (which does not mean that AMD users should neglect Prime, sometimes it is still indispensable). I must warn you, the program is very good, and therefore threatens with death crappy power supplies (although only them). Recommended testing time: «long» mode, repeat twice.
recommendations
Testing a video card is usually done by using the latest version of 3DMark for a very long time, while monitoring the appearance of artifacts on the screen, primarily white flies, indicating the presence of overheating of the video card memory. It should be noted that testing is usually carried out for a very long time, sometimes more than a day. nine0003
Owners of ATI video cards have a nice opportunity to use the automatic search for artifacts of ATI Tool or ATI Tray Tools unfairly forgotten by me to check video stability. These programs have the functions of overclocking, working with timings, saving bios, and automatically checking for artifacts. In fairness, it should be noted that both are credited with instability and buggy, although I personally observed such behavior only in ATI Tray Tools. Although both these programs are similar, only the test from the ATI Tool showed decent results on my system (details below). Moreover, ATI Tray Tools is burdened with a lot of rather useless functions, but does not have the most valuable — the log, which ATI Tool just has, which makes us recognize it as more advanced than ATITT from a practical point of view. nine0003
Finally, I will say that a real stability maniac when testing should be guided by the principle «together, not instead», i.e. after the success of S&M, drive Prime for at least six hours, etc.
Testing
In all cases, Doom 3 was launched at 1024×768 with autoexec as follows:
seta com_VideoRam «128» |
set image_useCache «1» |
seta image_cacheMegs «128» |
seta image_cacheMinK «61440» |
Anisotropy and FSAA were forcibly turned on during testing. After that, the demo of the last fight was alternately played for an hour, then the single was launched and the first three levels were passed.
The temperature in the room was maintained at 22 C, before changing the test, the system was turned off for at least 40 minutes (to exclude the very possibility of temperature interaction between different tests). nine0003
RAM
Doom 3 sensitivity to memory overclocking was tested by overclocking RAM timings at 200 MHz FSB. Using the S&M and Prime utilities (mode 3), values were found on which Windows booted successfully, but the utilities reported errors. These values were 2.5/2/3/6. After that, Doom 3 was successfully launched, there were no crashes, which does not allow Doom 3 to be called any effective memory tester.
Processor
S&M test was first run in normal mode and then in long mode, Prime 95 was run for 6 hours in In-place large FFT mode.
To begin with, I excluded RAM from the test by setting sparing timings of RAM 3/3/3/6 and lowering its frequency to 266 MHz using a divider. Since I have known for a long time the value of Vcore (1.8), which is ironically stable for all tests, I simply began to gradually reduce it, checking the reaction of the tests to the changes that had occurred.
First, on my system, the ability of S&M to detect errors in K7 processors at lower processor frequencies / higher voltages, noted by many users, was confirmed. Already on Vcore 1.775 S&M reported a bug during «long» testing, while Prime 95 revealed a failure only when reaching Vcore 1.725 after 1 hour 22 minutes after the start of testing.
Doom 3 behaved much more interestingly here. It was in no way inferior to Prime 95, stubbornly not wanting to work normally at a voltage of 1.725, it fell out on the desktop and from time to time broke into a BSOD when playing demos, hung when playing videos in the PDA in a single. Moreover, important game files (gamex86.dll, pak000.pk4, game00.pk4) were irreversibly damaged after the single crash. This game is very, very sensitive to the state of the processor, but is not able to supplement «serious» tests in any way and is not of great interest when checking its stability. nine0003
Video card
It should be noted that Doom obviously warms up the video memory more at seta com_VideoRam = your video memory size is , which is quite logical. It is believed that the load on the video card increases even more when using the Paralax Mapping Mod and Ultra Extreme Quality Mod, I myself noticed a slightly earlier occurrence of artifacts after installing them, so they were installed before testing.
3D Mark 05 raced for 6 hours 1024×768
ATI Tool raced for 6 hours at 380/680 and 382/684. The timer in the author’s wristwatch was set to 5 hours and 50 minutes, after which the author could afford to do other things. Upon the return of the author and the expiration of the test time, the «black box» was checked (you will agree that the log file is the greatest achievement of civilization). Testing longer than 5 minutes at a frequency of 388/688 was not required.
ATI Tray Tools was used for 6 hours during the test at 380/680 and 382/684, after 2.5 hours of testing at 388/688 it was decided to stop further testing, the Do Nothing setting was used during testing (details below). nine0003
Let me say that the «brutal» attitude of Doom 3 to the video card was the first to be noted by Activision technical support employees, who were bombarded with a lot of letters from ordinary users who bought «branded» computers and encountered swarms of white dots after 30-60 minutes games. I got interested in the test potential of the game when I encountered these artifacts within an hour of playing after setting com_VideoRam=128 (before that, the system successfully survived 3 hours of 3DMark). nine0003
So, here are the results of 3DMark 05. No artifacts occurred at 380 MHz on the core and 680 MHz on the memory (they didn’t appear at these frequencies during the 24-hour testing that took place long before this article was written). At 382/684 artifacts were not registered, after 2 hours 12 minutes of testing on 388/688 numerous «flies» were observed.
The behavior of the famous game has become really interesting here. At values of 380/680, the game successfully passed the test, in fact, it was with such values that a review was written on it, so there is no doubt about the stability of the video card at these frequencies. But then the holiday began: with an insignificant increase in frequencies (382/684), Doom 3 could not even pass the demo part of testing, swarms of white dots began to appear at the fortieth minute. nine0003
However, the ATI Tool is practically in no way inferior to this terrible (for overclocked hardware) game. At 380/680 the program showed no anomalies, which was to be expected. After the prescribed 40-minute rest, the test was repeated at frequencies 382/684. According to the log, the first artifacts appeared after 48 minutes. Out of curiosity, the test was run at a frequency of 388/688. The black box was not needed, a minute later the image of the fluffy cube was strewn with «flies».
But ATI Tray Tools frankly disappointed. For starters, he successfully performed an invalid operation after the first hour of testing at 380/680 frequencies. Then he easily and naturally drove the allotted time to 382/684 without revealing anomalies, which in itself is bad. But what’s worse, at the frequency of 388/688, at which all the tests were furious, only I was furious, and ATI Tray Tools managed to work for 2 hours and 30 minutes without artifacts. After that, I considered his further testing a waste of time. Before using each of the programs, I first got acquainted with their capabilities, and from the help to ATITT I managed to find out about the possibility of testing «in maximum quality», however, in this mode, the program successfully «dumped» the test, finding artifacts in the first second, not only at 380 /680, but also on comic 315/604. nine0003
This behavior of the program is difficult to explain. Perhaps, some features of blowing the memory of the card, «picking», my biofield are to blame for everything. Or, perhaps, somewhere «between the lines» of the help, grains of wisdom are encrypted, the possession of which would allow me to achieve greater efficiency from the program.
These results make us consider Doom 3 as an excellent video card test, more sensitive and faster than 3DMark, competing on equal terms with ATI Tool, but, alas, very inconvenient. nine0003
Conclusions
Doom 3 is of the most interest as a test of a video card, since there are much more sensitive and convenient programs for the processor, tested by time, but further research is required on this issue on other video cards. The delay between ATI Tool and Doom 3 in terms of artifacts manifestation time is very insignificant and can be considered due to system peculiarities or chance. Besides, ATI Tool’s automatism and very pleasant «black box» function speak in favor of ATI Tool. nine0003
I placed the test participants in terms of sensitivity to overclocking in the following order:
- Doom 3 : Pretty much ahead of ATI Tool, this game does not become a «test of choice» for one, but important reason — inconvenience of use.
- ATI Tool : Still the most convenient and practical program for Radeon owners, almost as sensitive as Doom 3.
- 3DMark : Veteran of the test front still in service, especially with Prime 95.
- ATI Tray Tools : Very strange failure. I myself am perplexed.
Admittedly, the reliability of this work is very, very limited, although Activision technical support data confirms the results obtained for the video card. It is necessary to carry out similar studies on other systems. Doom 3 is inconvenient for long-term testing, so to comfortably use it as a test, you need to record very long and complex demos, or hope that one of the craftsmen will write a mod that simply allows you to put the demo in a loop. nine0003
