The Star Wars franchise was a big part of my childhood. When I first watched all three episodes in the mid-90s on VHS cassettes, I fell in love with the world of George Lucas . Later, I studied the Expanded Universe, collected a collection of figurines, and because of the game Jedi Academy At some point there were problems at the school.

However, I never thought Lucas’ products were perfect. There were a lot of frankly lousy books, idiotic canon rewrites, stupid dialogue in the new trilogy, and so on. But the love for the series was still immense.

Tomatoes began to wither after the Mickey Mouse Corporation obtained the franchise rights. After paying an astronomical sum of $4.05 billion, Disney chapter Bob Iger was determined to recoup his investment as quickly as possible. For the sake of this, tight deadlines for the release of new projects were set, and for filming they wrote out the person who provoked the split of the Star Trek fandom — maestro J. J. Abrams .

They cut down the forest — chips fly. This is what happened with Star Wars. In parallel with the preparation of the trilogy, Disney removed the books, comics and games from the Expanded Universe from the canon, which offended many fans. The move was similar to Star Trek’s Black Hole, which also allowed the writers to shamelessly borrow ideas.

The script for “ The Force Awakens ” proposed by George Lucas was thrown into the trash, instead Abrams and co dashed off an under-remake of “A New Hope”, ramming everything with fan service and a “progressive agenda”, thanks to which the main character became a Mary Sue. However, on a wave of hype, the audience swallowed the bait, which brought about two billion dollars to the Mickey Mouse piggy bank.

Feeling the taste of money, the Disney management turned to the full, gradually announcing all new projects based on them. The company expected to make out of Lucasfilm second Marvel but miscalculated. The problem lay in mode Kathleen Kennedy , who proved to be an incompetent manager. Suffice it to say that the studio didn’t have a script for the whole trilogy, and having taken a liking to Rian Johnson , the head of Lucasfilm gave the director carte blanche. This culminated in The Last Jedi , a Rubicon that changed Star Wars forever. Having the freedom of creativity, Johnson made a mockery picture with beautiful visuals and poorly choreographed fight scenes. If it had been a standalone film and not part of a massive trilogy, the damage would not have been so devastating. But, hoping to deceive the viewer’s expectations, the director deliberately destroyed all the mystery boxes that Abrams carefully hung out, and also ruined the images of his favorite characters, and besides, he ended the film as if it were the end of the saga.

The eighth episode had the effect of a nuclear bomb. Demonstrating good fees at the start, as a result, the picture collected $ 700 million less than The Force Awakens. Rian Johnson’s work was praised by professional critics, but the fan community was split into pieces. The situation was only exacerbated by the “ social justice fighters ” movement, fueled by Disney PR people. The fans of the franchise who rejected The Last Jedi were naturally mixed with dirt — called racists, toxic white men, misogynists, nerds, trolls and so on. The hysteria was supported by Lucasfilm, Disney, some actors and Rian Johnson himself.

Insulting one’s own target audience could not end well. And it didn’t end there, as fans began to rally against the Kennedy regime. This is how the Fandom Menace movement was born. And pretty soon, Disney was in big trouble.

In parallel with the main trilogy, spin-offs were in production. Each of them went through the production hell of story rewrites, massive reshoots and director changes. And if » Rogue One turned out to be a solid blockbuster, then “ Solo ” was in for a financial crash, which was affected not only by an inflated budget, but also by the loss of interest from the audience.

At the same time, merchandise sales began to fall, with the trend hitting products related to new episodes. Realizing the scale of the problem, Disney panicked and began to take steps in response.

Such a long preface is intended to explain the pains in which the final episode of the Saga was born. To save the franchise, J.J. Abrams was brought back, who was facing complete chaos on set. Disney gave him the notoriously impossible task of fixing the trilogy and regaining the trust of the fans.

Numerous reshoots, edits to the script, rejection of the material by the test audience — the picture was haunted by many problems. According to numerous leaks, three to five versions of the film were made, reshoots took place in the fall, and the final version of the film was completed only at the end of November. Was the end result worth the effort? Unfortunately no.

About a year has passed since the devastating battle on the planet Crate. The remnants of the Resistance are slowly rebuilding, while Ray is trained in the ways of the Force under the guidance of Leia Organa, who has suddenly become a trained Jedi. However, the respite ends when a message from Emperor Sheev Palpatine circles the galaxy.

Feeling threatened by his power, the leader of the First Order, Kylo Ren, responds to Palpatine’s call and arrives on the planet Exigon, which has become the refuge of the half-corpse Emperor. He offers the son of Solo and Organa a deal: a huge fleet in exchange for killing Rey, considered the last Jedi.

It’s becoming clear that Abrams literally hates Rian Johnson’s film. The entire ninth episode is a hard-fought attempt to cancel The Last Jedi. Resistance crushed? Everyone hates the First Order, so in the final battle we will roll out a giant fleet of volunteers. Snoke was killed? He was a clone puppet controlled by Palpatine! Ray’s parents are nobody? Yes, Ray’s parents are nobody, but her grandfather is AWESOME. Was Luke exposed as a miserable loser and a coward? Here’s the ghost of Mark Hamill, who says: “Sorry, I was wrong. I repent.»

However, the main problem of the film is also visible: as in the case of The Last Jedi, the director was given too much creative freedom. And it deals another powerful blow to the franchise. In an attempt to come up with an epic finale, Abrams went for broke, realizing his wildest fantasies. However, he does not have his own ideas, he is again engaged in necrophilia, raping old stories. This time, the victims were the sixth episode and the now non-canonical Dark Empire comic, which was already a rather controversial work. And for the sake of spectacle and scale, Abrams goes against the rules of the Star Wars world, as well as the new canon from Disney, and simply destroys the meaning of the Return of the Jedi ending.

The narration turned out to be stupid. Suffice it to say that there are about five MacGuffins in the plot, and the main villain changes his plan three times and demonstrates a level of Force that the hero of Force Unleashed would envy.

There is no special logic of the narrative either, instead of it there is a sequence of “successful events” and a stream of delirium. So, the concept of fighting a giant enemy army by destroying the command center has reached a new level of idiocy. This time, the Emperor’s fleet is hanging out in the planet’s atmosphere for some reason, and the ships need a signal tower to rise vertically.

The concepts of space and time are also unknown to JJ Abrams. At the beginning of the movie, we are somehow told that Palpatine’s fleet will attack the worlds in sixteen hours. Therefore, the main characters begin to teleport between planets at an incredible speed.

It is impossible not to note the scale. If Palpatine’s fleet, then it’s hundreds of destroyers that rise from the water. The film is packed with events, locations are constantly changing, the plot does not mark time, and the characters are almost never separated. Yes, it is interesting to watch in places, but the abundance of turns can be harmful. At the end, the creators tried to knock out tears from the audience, but in an attempt to do this they went too far, as a result of which, at the climax, the audience laughed because of the absurdity of what was happening.

At the same time, the scriptwriters reduced the degree of stupid humor and redid the images of the characters. This is most evident in John Boyega’s Finn, who was a constant annoyance in previous films. This time, the hero became more calm, although something happened to his love lines along the way: he friendzoned the Asian Rose (she generally faded into the background) and for some reason tries to stick Ray together.

Kylo Ren performed by Adam Driver, who used to look like an awkward angular hysteria, also looks more organic. But with Ray, performed by Daisy Ridley, there are problems. Apparently, the actress does not know how to act in emotional scenes, so she puffs her eyes for most of the film.

So did JJ Abrams end the trilogy well? Unfortunately no. Before him was an impossible task, which his talent could not pull. Disney has rolled out a very chaotic film that is desperately trying to cancel the previous one while spouting all new absurdities. The screenwriters, who cannot come up with anything new and continue to recycle old stories for their own needs, do not help the cause either. And the scale of what is happening is achieved at the cost of logic. As a result, Lucasfilm not only did not regain the trust of the fans, but also lost the support of professional critics. The film can be recommended only to those who want to kill time on a spectacular one-time blockbuster, and the person should not know about the existence of previous films.

All of this might not have happened if Lucasfilm’s management had controlled production and carefully crafted scripts. Now it remains to hope that Filoni and Favreau will replace Kennedy in the coming year. Their “ The Mandalorian ” looks better than all the Disney movies combined. However, they have to do a huge job of patching holes. Baby Yoda, save us!
