Other Switch Online member benefits

Cloud saves

Switch Online allows you to store your save games in the cloud, in order to back up your progress. That way, if you do have to wipe your Switch for whatever reason or run out of storage, you will still have a back-up you can download at a later date.

There is a catch though; not all games will save to the cloud. Nintendo blocks some to «ensure fair play», whatever that means.

Nintendo Switch Online app

A Nintendo Switch Online app is available for iOS and Android, and offers voice chat and multiplayer hubs for supported games.

Member offers

Deals and offers are available for members only. As are the occasional free games beyond those for NES, SNES, N64 and Sega Mega Drive / Genesis.

Missions & Rewards

A Missions & Rewards section of the Nintendo Switch Online hub sets you tasks, such as «play software that suports online play», or game-specific goals, like «play the NES version of Super Mario Bros». Each completed mission will earn you Platinum Points that can either be traded for digital items (such as themes) or merchandise on Nintendo’s website. They can also be swapped-in for exclusive icons, frames and backgrounds for your Switch profile picture.

It’s worth noting that Platinum Points are not the same as Gold Points (usually earned when buying games from Nintendo itself) and expire after six months, so don’t forget to spend them.

How much does Nintendo Switch Online cost and is there a family plan?

Switch Online price

The price of Nintendo Switch Online varies depending on whether you like to pay monthly, quarterly or yearly. Schulte tables online

Special exercises on Schulte tables train visual search skills and peripheral vision, help develop attention and pace of information perception.

Play

Opponents

Working with Schulte tables is an excellent exercise for developing the ability to concentrate. Constant training contributes to the development of parallel attention (the ability to simultaneously perceive a large amount of information and evaluate its semantic load) and increase reading speed at any age.
See more about the Schulte tables and the methodology for performing exercises with tables.

We have developed 3 difficulty levels of the online Schulte test:

  1. 5 x 5 black and white matrix;
  2. black and white tables 7 by 7;
  3. color tables 7 by 7.

In the future, it is planned to add red-black Schulte-Gorbov tables — an online test for assessing and training attention switching.

In this interesting game you have to find all the numbers in order as quickly as possible. It is very important to use peripheral vision: keep your eyes in the center of the table only!

PURPOSE OF THE GAME

This is an effective simulator for the development of attention stability, peripheral vision — after a week of training, the amount of visible text increases. Correct and regular exercise improves the speed of finding information and can help increase the speed of reading.

About the table

The Schulte table is a square matrix in whose cells numbers or letters are randomly placed. It is used as a test to assess the current rate of perception of textual information and to study the amount of attention.

The effect of the exercise

Regular training with Schulte tables:

  • helps in developing the skill of concentration;
  • help increase the amount of attention;
  • develop short-term visual memory;
  • expand peripheral vision, and a wider field of view reduces the search time for valuable semantic parts of the text;
  • increase the speed of visual perception of information and increase the speed of reading.

Three ways to get rid of gambling addiction in children.

Part 4 As a specialist in behavior and habits, I see my task as suggesting to parents working tactics in communicating with a child. The recommendations and thoughts that I share will help you get your children off the computer and switch their attention to real life without resorting to harsh educational methods.

In this part, I will tell you:

  • what gambling binges are and how to prevent them;
  • how to get a child interested in learning;
  • why sometimes the best strategy is to leave the kids alone.

1 Addiction does not disappear without a trace

Passion for online games is an addiction from which it is impossible to get rid of once and for all without leaving a trace. My experience is proof of that. For two years, I got tired of playing Ragnarok, and in the end I was done with it. I entered the institute, became more active in my life, found new hobbies and friends who had not heard anything about magic spells, quests and guilds of fighters.

Despite this, my passion for this pastime has not gone away. Even as an adult, from time to time I found myself playing. If I happened to find an exciting, well-built online game with good graphics, I simply could not control myself and immediately sat down at the computer. And sometimes he disappeared in the game for two weeks.

It was damn hard to tear yourself away from the screen, just like in your school days. And this is despite the fact that I was closely engaged in the study of willpower and self-discipline. Knowledge did not help: I could not build a healthy attitude towards the game, I could not restrain myself. These bouts of addiction I call «gaming binges.»

If a person had an addiction, then he cannot consciously control his stay inside it. One of the criteria for determining addiction, adopted by the World Health Organization, is precisely the lack of control. A person is going to play just one game, but unexpectedly for himself he spends five hours in a row in the game.

What will you do for the sake of the game!

My problem was that even when the game was paused, my thoughts still revolved around it. I dreamed of finishing work as soon as possible in order to sit down to play. Sometimes it spurred me on to finish my plan for the day faster. «Now I’ll do 10 tasks and then I’ll play as a reward» — I decided and got down to business.

However, very soon I began to notice that I was increasingly making deals with my conscience. I convinced myself that I had already worked enough and that I could play. Postponed things to other days. Some tasks were not performed as well as they could be.

In general, did everything carelessly, just to get back to the game as soon as possible. And even if he planned to start playing at eight in the evening, already in the afternoon he was playing with monsters with might and main, of course, forgetting about food and important matters.

So please don’t be surprised if your teen starts cheating on you or doing homework just to gain access to the game. Even we adults easily fool ourselves, so what to expect from a child?

IMPORTANT: in order not to plunge deep into addiction again, it is better not to tempt yourself, because relying on willpower is naive.

Any addiction to one degree or another remains with us for life. We can stop playing, but periodically break down and go into gaming binges. For this reason, you need to be vigilant and try to prevent relapses, because it is very easy to lose control over yourself.

2Three Techniques Against Gambling Binges

Although I haven’t completely solved my problem with gambling addiction, over time it has become easier for me to control myself. I used the techniques for this, which I describe below. As a result, binges began to happen less and less over time. Now they come from strength once a year — during periods of severe fatigue or during vacations.

Drinking Technique #1: Imagine Consequences

For the past couple of years, I’ve been using a technique to keep me from setting up a new game and getting lost in it. The technique is to imagine the consequences.

Let’s say I have a burning desire to play. And I imagine what will happen if I put it on and start playing. How will it look like? Will I get pleasure? Will I be able to stop in time?

A movie plays in my head. So I choose a character, study the map of the area, take the quest. In the first 10 minutes, I am seized by a sweet anticipation, but then it is replaced by unpleasant emotions, and anxiety sounds louder in the background.

I don’t work, I don’t take care of my project, I don’t help my wife around the house, I don’t read fairy tales to my daughters, I don’t do anything useful. Guilt overwhelms me, the adventures of the character no longer seem interesting, I lose the taste of pleasure.

All this has already happened and, scrolling through my previous experience in my thoughts, I come to the conclusion that it is better not to even start the game, because nothing good will come of it.

Drinking Technique #2: Create Obstacles

Another Way to Resist the Game — increase the number of obstacles in relation to the entrance to it. I do it this way: I play for an hour or two, and when I realize that I’ve played enough for today, I delete the game from the computer.

Reinstallation can take up to an hour. The next morning, this fact usually cools my ardor and helps discipline to prevail. Of course, if you have a strong addiction and the temptation to play is great, this method does not always work.

If you get comfortable in your chair, draw the curtains and stock up on sandwiches, you can disappear into the game for 24 hours, or even longer. For gamers, this is par for the course. Here an agreement with myself helped me: I decided that I would play only standing at a special table. It is difficult to stand for more than three hours, fatigue takes its toll and the game has to be interrupted, no matter how exciting it may be.

Thus, we allow ourselves to play, but set limiting factors, that is, we come up with conditions under which it is physically impossible to play for a long time.

Technique against binge drinking No. 3: choose a boring game

Finally, I will offer one more tricky technique against gambling binge. The bottom line is that choose games that are unlikely to drag you out, and if they do, then not for long. These games include single-player games and those that have an ending.

In my case, offline games (without the participation of other players) and short games that can be completely completed in a few hours and thus “close the gestalt” were suitable alternatives. Multiplayer online games are usually endless. There will never come a moment in them when you can say to yourself: «That’s it, I went through everything and defeated everyone.»

3The story of Ludwig Bystronovsky

Listeners of my podcast will surely remember the episode with designer Ludwig Bystronovsky. He, like me, was a fan of online games and spent a whole year in World of Warcraft. At some point, I decided to quit this occupation and for a start deleted my character. It didn’t help: Ludwig started dreaming about the game at night, and after a couple of weeks he restored his hero.

World of Warcraft never permanently deletes a character. No matter how many times you destroy it, you can always restore it. When you find out about this, it becomes scary.

Not losing hope of coping with gambling addiction, the designer decided to go the other way and work with the psychological side of addiction. He analyzed what exactly attracted him to the game, and found that the main item on this list was friendship with other players.

Then Ludwig moved to another game server and thus lost all connections with them. By the way, I did the same by switching to offline games, it really helps.

The second major step that helped Ludwig (and me) curb his addiction was introducing healthy habits. When you find a lot of interesting things in real life, the virtual fades and becomes unnecessary.

IMPORTANT: Find out what needs the game satisfies and find ways to close them differently.

4 How can I get my child interested in learning?

Now let’s think about how to make a teenager change his attitude to school homework and do his homework with enthusiasm, and not just for show.
As I said earlier, if we limit the child in the game and force him to study, then the game will become more and more desirable for him, and the lessons will cause more and more disgust.

A reasonable question arises: why, in fact, should a child attend lessons if they are boring? After all, instead you can watch YouTube or play.

Of course, you can scold the child, but let’s remember ourselves. I think that each of us has a list of things that we would like to do: write a book or learn English. However, when we have the opportunity to do this, for some reason we open YouTube.

Why? The answer is simple: because it is difficult to force yourself to do something that is not interesting and requires concentration and discipline. Very difficult! It’s one thing when you are in a system where conditions for concentration are created and 20 of your friends are sitting next to you at textbooks, and a teacher is standing in front of you. It’s a completely different matter when there is none of that. In this case, you will not sit down for lessons and will not learn English if you are not interested.

Therefore, to the question «How to make a child learn?» I will answer — no way! You can’t force him if you don’t sit next to him for days on end. The question was originally posed incorrectly. It is necessary not to force, but to create conditions in which the child would be interested in learning.

Choose the right resources for learning

If your child is studying remotely, they can choose resources for learning on their own or with your help. It is not necessary to be guided only by those school programs that public education provides. Look for interesting resources and captivating videos. Watch history lessons on YouTube, and such ones that will take your breath away!

For example, Arzamas has a video «Ancient Rome in 20 minutes». It is so interesting that it is impossible to tear yourself away, even if you are indifferent to history. The video has 8 million views, because a professionally made video is no worse than a cartoon in terms of its ability to engage the viewer.

Online quest lesson is another great way to teach kids through exciting investigations and puzzles. Such lessons, for example, are created by the Quest Academy, providing the child with both the knowledge of the school curriculum and communication with peers.

For children 7–9 years old, the authors have developed an interesting quest about the myths of Ancient Greece. The child becomes a participant in a detective investigation and in an hour and a half learns a lot of interesting things about the gods of Olympus, the heroes of myths and the exploits of Hercules.

The future lies with games

Concluding the topic of play and learning, I would like to emphasize that I am sure that the future lies with learning hidden in the game. This means that people are playing and, without noticing it, are mastering skills.

What skills did I learn in Fight Club? For example, he learned to type quickly blindly. Firstly, there was a chat in the game, where there was an active correspondence. Secondly, I played in the dark while everyone was sleeping and could not turn on the light so as not to wake anyone up.

What did I learn from playing regular RPGs? I learned English because I really wanted to understand what was happening in the quest, what was the essence of the story. I didn’t set out to learn English, it came naturally because it was a process built into the game.

What did I learn from playing Ragnarok? I upgraded my people management skills. And there was also a game market and I learned to bargain and understand pricing.

The future belongs to educational programs that are a game. For example, there is the Magnus chess game, which is actually an arcade game. Little men are running around the map, and the kids like it. Without noticing it, children learn the rules of the game of chess and the movement of pieces.

IMPORTANT: Study can compete with play for a teenager’s attention only if it is as fun, interesting, exciting, understandable and simple as play. In addition, it should provide equally fast feedback.

5Want to help? Then leave me alone

Finally, I want to once again emphasize the key thoughts that have run like a red thread through the entire series of articles on gambling addiction.

Initially, parents put the question like this: «How to wean a child from online games and instill in him an interest in lessons?». However, very often they mean the following: «How to wean a child from online games without doing anything yourself and without paying special attention to the child?».

I will say right away: I have no answer to this question.

My articles are addressed to those parents who are ready to take care of their children. If you are ready, then try to help your child organize the learning process so that the lessons are interesting for him, invest time and attention in this, and together with your child, understand the causes of gambling addiction.

If you do not have the time or desire to help the child, get to know him better, deal with his difficulties and hobbies, then take it for granted: the child will grow up the way he grows up. Just calm down and leave him alone. This will be of great benefit both for you and for the child, because it will allow you to maintain a normal relationship.

IMPORTANT: if you are not ready to invest in a relationship with a child, then at least leave him alone. This will be a huge contribution in the long run.

Who do we want to raise?

The second key idea is that yelling and putting pressure on a child, forbidding him to play, forcing him to study, using his authority, is useless. Moreover, this is an irresponsible and infantile approach. Thus we say to the child: “I don’t care what you feel. I am not going to take your side and find out what you are interested in and what is not. You need to study, so you will live like in the army and work from bell to bell.”

Don’t think you can get rid of a gambling addiction with a click. Do not hope that if you strictly forbid a student to play a computer, he will reconcile himself and take lessons with great pleasure. There are no easy ways here!

Instead of cutting off your shoulder, think about the main question: “What kind of relationship do you want to build with your children? Who do you want to grow from them? Who are they to you and who are you to them? What world are you preparing them for?»

In my opinion, the best thing we parents can do for our children is to help them build a bright and interesting life. Friendship, support, sincere interest, time and attention — this is what we can offer children, opening the doors to a happy future for them.
