The Nintendo Switch (ニンテンドースイッチ) is the seventh home video game console released by Nintendo. The console is the successor to the Wii U and it competes with Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One console in the 8th generation of video game systems.

Known in development by its codename NX, it was unveiled in October 2016, subsequently revealed as the Switch in January 2017, and was released worldwide on March 3rd, 2017. The Switch is considered a «hybrid» console; it is designed primarily as a home console, with the main unit inserted onto a docking station to connect to a television or monitor. Alternatively, it can be removed from the dock and used similarly to a mobile tablet, or placed in a standalone tabletop position visible to several players. The Switch uses Joy-Con wireless controllers, which include standard buttons and a directional joystick for user input, motion sensing, and high-definition tactile feedback. Switch games and software are available on both physical flash ROM cartridges and digital distribution and do not use region locking.

A second model of the Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch Lite, was announced on July 10th, 2019, and was released worldwide on September 20th, 2019. It is a handheld-focused revision of the system, integrating the Joy-Con as part of the main unit’s hardware, and has a smaller screen and a larger battery capacity. Additionally, a regular directional pad replaced the four directional buttons on the integrated left Joy-Con. However, due to the integration of the Joy-Con into the system, they cannot be removed, and thus, the HD Rumble and IR camera features have been removed. The Switch Lite only directly supports games that can be played in handheld mode, retaining features like the Switch’s gyroscopic sensors and Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and NFC communication compatibility. Some tabletop games that require the HD Rumble or IR camera features will require players to use separate Joy-Con with the Switch Lite. The system does not support any docking or connectivity to a television, so it is incompatible with games that require television mode. Players who attempt to purchase games that require television or tabletop mode via the eShop on the Switch Lite will be notified of the incompatibility. In addition to other normal Joy-Con, the Switch Lite does support external controllers otherwise compatible with the Switch.

An updated version of the Nintendo Switch, featuring a longer battery life than the original of 4.5–9 hours, was announced on July 17th, 2019, and was released in Japan and North America in mid-August 2019, and released in the United Kingdom in September 2019. This revision of the Switch primarily features a change in both the main CPU and GPU that leads to lower power consumption while otherwise maintaining the same battery, which extends the battery life.

A third model of the Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch OLED Model, was announced on July 6th, 2021, and was released worldwide on October 8th, 2021. It features a 7 inches (180 mm) 720p OLED display, and when docked, output to 1080p resolution. Additionally, it features 64 GB of internal storage, enhanced audio functions, and includes a wider adjustable stand for use in tabletop mode. The unit ships with a new dock that includes a wired LAN port. Otherwise, it features similar technical specifications as the base Switch model, and is compatible with all Switch games and existing accessories. The unit ships in two bundles: one that includes a black dock and red and blue Joy-Con (similar to the base model’s default color scheme), and a white dock with white Joy-Con.

As of June 30th, 2022, the Nintendo Switch has sold 111.08 million units worldwide, making it Nintendo’s best selling home console as well as Nintendo’s third best selling video game console of all time, only surpassed by the Game Boy/Game Boy Color and Nintendo DS.[1]

Features[edit]

Hardware[edit]

The Switch console is solely based on the tablet. Everything else operates in tandem with the device. The Dock serves as a means to connect the tablet to a television, as well as charging it and any attached controllers. The console itself has 32 Gigabytes (64 Gigabytes in the OLED model) of on-system storage and has a slot for optional microSD card memory expansion of up to 2 Terabytes. The console is capable of 720p output in tablet and tabletop mode with an adaptive resolution and can go as high as 1080p while docked.

The Joy-Con controllers are wireless, Bluetooth-based and the right Joycon is equipped with an infrared camera on the bottom which allows gyroscopic data (among other things) to be surveyed to the Switch, allowing for Wiimote-like motion controls in various games. The Joy-Cons can be used in tandem with each other in various ways. They can be equipped to a grip to make a whole controller, be held separately, or can be held horizontally and played as their own controllers. Additionally, a more traditional controller, called the Pro Controller, is also available, which also has built-in gyroscopic controls. All controllers feature HD Rumble, an advanced form of haptic feedback that enables the system to replicate every single tap and sensation in-game, with much more realism and efficiency than traditional haptic motors.

The physical media for the console consists of proprietary cartridges as opposed to the optical Blu-Ray discs of its direct competitors. The cartridges are not region-locked, though they do require a profile on the console that matches the region the games were purchased in order to play them. The cartridge plastic has been coated in an extremely bitter, non-toxic substance to prevent children from swallowing them.

Online[edit]

The Switch initially launched with a free online service, with the promise of an improved, paid service later on in the system’s lifespan. The new online system for the Switch named Nintendo Switch Online is a paid subscription-based online service based around the Nintendo Account service. It allows players all around the world to play with and against each other in games that have online multiplayer, have access to a library of Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) games, as well as Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games through an expanded tier of the service, all of which have added online play, save their data on a cloud backup system, and have access to the corresponding app on mobile devices and price reductions on the Nintendo eShop (Switch-only).

Nintendo Switch Online app[edit]

The Nintendo Switch Online app is a mobile app given to download with the Nintendo Switch Online service. Some sub-sections can appear in the app, corresponding to the owner-owned games.
Here is the list of all compatible games and their global features:

  • Splatoon 2: Players have access to SplatNet 2.
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Players have access to Smash World.
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons: Players have access to NookLink.
  • Splatoon 3: Players have access to SplatNet 3.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released for the Nintendo Switch on December 7th, 2018 worldwide. The game was first teased at the end of the March 8th, 2018 Nintendo Direct, little over a year after the system had launched, and was officially revealed at Nintendo’s E3 2018 presentation.

Additionally, as DLC for Ultimate, four characters from games originally released for the console debuted in Smash as playable fighters: Byleth, Min Min, Pyra and Mythra. Debuting in 2019, Byleth currently stands as the most recently created character in the series.

Gallery[edit]

  • The Nintendo Switch is the fourth consecutive Nintendo console to have support for the GameCube controller, after the Wii U, Wii, and GameCube.

A fighter, also known as a playable character or simply character, is a character (or in some cases, multiple characters simultaneously) in the Super Smash Bros. series roster that can be controlled by players in Versus Mode and other modes. These characters are located on the character selection screen and can be used without a cheat device (e.g. Action Replay). Playable characters can further be divided into starter, unlockable, and downloadable, which distinguishes whether characters can be played right away, whether they need to be unlocked, or whether they need to be downloaded.

Notes[edit]

  1. ^ Mii Fighters are automatically unlocked upon creation in the Mii Fighter menu, or, in Ultimate, upon unlocking them in World of Light. a b Pokémon Trainer is not counted because he isn’t controlled by the player and he lacks a fighter number in Ultimate. Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard are counted instead.

Newcomers and veterans[edit]

A newcomer is a character who appears as playable for the first time in the series in a given game. A veteran is the opposite: a character who has been playable in a previous game. For example, Diddy Kong is a newcomer in Brawl, as he did not appear as playable in any previous games, but is a veteran in all subsequent games. Note that the definition of newcomers is distinct from that of «unlockable» or «secret» characters, which are playable characters who must be unlocked by completing certain tasks; Melee, Brawl, and Smash 4 all had starter veterans, starter newcomers, unlockable veterans, and unlockable newcomers. Ultimate is the first game in which all newcomers to the base game are unlockable; however, most veterans are also unlockable.

The term newcomer was originally used to describe the unlockable characters in the original Super Smash Bros. by the data deletion menu. It was later used in the first trailer for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, in which new characters were introduced with the title «Newcomer» atop their name. The word newcomer was later used on the Smash Bros. DOJO!! site to classify characters who made their debut in Brawl and are starters in there, in addition to third party characters Snake and Sonic. This use of the term has become the community-preferred usage for other games in the series.

«Perfect-attendance crew»[edit]

Less commonly, the term «veteran» can also denote the «eight regulars» or «perfect-attendance fighters», which are the eight starter characters in the original Super Smash Bros. which have been in all subsequent games of the series. The «perfect attendance» part of the term is a reference to the fact that these eight fighters have always been available from the start of every game without needing to be unlocked. The terms originated in the description for the 10th Brawl event match All-Star Battle Regulars, reading: «The Smash Bros. perfect-attendance crew! Fight the eight regulars in order!» A popular, unofficial term referring to this group is «The Original 8» (Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox, and Pikachu), which may also be called «The Original 12» if including the four unlockable characters (Luigi, Ness, Captain Falcon, and Jigglypuff). The 29th Brawl event match All-Star Semifinal Regulars states: «Four hidden characters from the past game! They’re secret perfect attendees.» Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is the only installment where all the «Original 12» are starter characters. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate refers to the concept of the perfect-attendance crew by making the only starter characters the aforementioned «Original 8».

  • Dr. Mario, Ice Climbers, Lucas, Mewtwo, Pichu, Pokémon Trainer’s Squirtle and Ivysaur, Roy, Snake, Wolf, and Young Link are the only fighters to have ever been cut in an installment.
    • Pichu and Young Link are the only fighters to have been absent from two consecutive installments.
    • Ice Climbers are the only characters to have been a fighter in more than one game before being cut.
    • Pokémon is the only universe to have multiple cut fighters, being Mewtwo, Pichu, and Pokémon Trainer’s Squirtle and Ivysaur.
    • Lucas is the only fighter to have been a starter character, unlockable character, and downloadable character in three separate games. He is also the only fighter to be cut from a roster without skipping an installment.
  • Roy is the only playable character to debut in Super Smash Bros. before appearing in any other game. His inclusion in Melee was intended to promote Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, his debut in his home series, which was released shortly after Melee in Japan.
    • According to Super Smash Bros. series director Masahiro Sakurai, The Binding Blade was originally scheduled for release before Melee. [1]
    • While Corrin debuted as DLC for SSB4 before Fire Emblem Fates was released in most territories, the game had already been released in Japan several months prior, making them more similar to Marth and Lucas in this regard.
  • Captain Falcon (in SSB), the Mii Fighters, and Pac-Man (in Ultimate) are the only fighters to use head icons that don’t portray their faces.
  • Prior to Ultimate, Wario was the only fighter to debut as a starter before becoming unlockable in another game.
  • Prior to Ultimate, the only unlockable characters whose playable status was not kept a secret prior to release were Snake and Sonic in Brawl, and Lucina in Smash 4.
  • Yoshi and Captain Falcon are the only characters who appear in all five Super Smash Bros. games as the sole fighters from their series.
    • They are also the only characters who debuted the same day but in different games.
  • Metal Gear and Ice Climber are the only universes to have the entirety of their characters cut from one game to the next, and be reintroduced in the next game.
  • Samus is the only female character to appear in all five games in the Super Smash Bros. series, as Pokémon were not considered gendered at the time of the first game’s release.
  • Charizard, Little Mac, Ridley, Dark Samus, and Isabelle are the only characters to have been made fully playable after major non-playable appearances, excluding characters that are playable via items (Metal Mario, Giant Donkey Kong, and Giga Bowser). These include Poké Ball Pokémon, Bosses, and Assist Trophies.
    • Lucas, Mewtwo, Min Min, Pyra, and Mythra are the only fighters to have had a non-playable appearance in an installment before becoming downloadable content for that installment, with Lucas and Mewtwo being Trophies in Smash 4, and Min Min, Pyra, and Mythra all being Spirits in Ultimate.
  • Charizard is the only character who was part of a transformation character, became a standalone fighter, and then returned to being part of a transformation character.
    • Inversely, Samus is the only character who was initially a standalone character before being able to transform into Zero Suit Samus, before the two were split in their next appearances.
  • Alph and the female Pokémon Trainer are the only alternate costume characters who were added after their base fighter debuted.
    • In Smash 4, Alph was intended to be a clone fighter of Olimar. Rock Pikmin were even considered for use. However, this was scrapped presumably due to time constraints and he was incorporated as Olimar’s last four alternate costumes.
  • The Koopalings and the Heroes from Dragon Quest III, IV and VIII are the only alternate characters who debuted before their base fighter in their home series.

Broforce. Game overview and character list

« Broforce » is a computer game in the « Shoot’em up » genre, developed by the independent studio « Free Lives Games «. There is no information about the exact release date, but the project « Broforce » is currently available through the early access program in « Steam «.

The plot of the game refers to a typical action movie scenario of the 90s, a commando unit called “ Bro ” arrives in a banana republic and begins to introduce democracy to local terrorists by radical methods, and the main characters are also periodically engaged in the release of prisoners and the destruction of local dictators. nine0013

The gameplay is characterized by high dynamics, the player will have to constantly move away from the enemy fire of a large number of opponents and shoot back, respectively. The levels are implemented in the form of small locations with destructible environments, the goals vary, but basically, the squad « Bro » needs to get to Satan and destroy him. Periodically, the main characters meet with bosses, for the elimination of which you will have to use individual counter tactics.

During the release of another captive comrade, the acting character changes. Each member of the squad « Bro «has a unique game mechanics, this was made possible thanks to a very impressive arsenal. For example, the T-800 Terminator uses a minigun, the barrel of which spins for a second, which forces the player to prepare to fire in advance, and strong recoil does not allow continuous fire.

In addition to the main weapon, each character has a unique ability; for example, Terminator T-800 loses its skin and becomes immune to any hits or explosions for a short period of time. It is worth noting that the characters have different characteristics from each other, Neo and Blade move faster than Robocop or Terminator, etc. At this stage, about 20 characters have been implemented in the Broforce project, the use of unique mechanics has allowed the developers to make the gameplay varied and exciting. nine0013

6 most brutal video game characters

Video games have long ceased to be a banal pixel that wants to kill another pixel. Now they have realistic graphics, complex physics model, interesting plots and dialogues. In essence, this is the same as regular films, but with interactivity.

Many video game characters have been reference BROs throughout the era. This style is repeated from game to game, showing us more characters with balls of steel, biting quotes and so on and so forth. After all, in order to be a Bro, you need to go to the gym, become harsh there, not be afraid of any unknown garbage that climbs because of strange places. Also, a bro should have a lot of swag, one hot chick or even several. Video game dudes have all these qualities, and today we will make our list of tough guys who are definitely bro. nine0013

6. Kratos from God of War

What could be more severe than being the god of war? Kratos is a Spartan warrior who has undergone Spartan military training, which already makes him unrealistically cool. Not only did this dude succeed by taking over the vacant seat of the god of war, but he was pretty successful in defeating scary creatures from Greek mythology, which makes Kratos even more severe than he really is. His ascent also began very harshly, deciding to take revenge not on horseradish from the mountain, but on Ares himself! What he did, by the way. That’s decent behavior bro. nine0013

5. Mario — Super Mario Bros

Everything old Mario did was for a woman. Specifically, for the princess, which, to be honest, I absolutely sincerely hate. But you can’t be kidnapped so many times and giggle cutely after each time, woman, you are a princess, finally set yourself a guard! The unfortunate Mario ate strange mushrooms and flowers for her sake, fought with spiked turtles and huge dragons, and all this in order to once again save this fool. This dude really has balls of steel! If I were him, I’d rather be a plumber. nine0013

4. Johnny Cage — Mortal Kombat

Cool black glasses that suit him (he looks so-so without them), strong biceps, a good right hand — this bro definitely deserves attention. The best fighter on earth has an overwhelming sense of self-importance, but he is also quite cheerful, and when he hits women he also apologizes, gentleman, in short. Sometimes, however, he was damn annoying with stupid jokes, but then he corrected himself. Tried, dude! By the way, there is an opinion that Johnny is not a bro, because he hits in the balls. What do you think? nine0013

3. Gordon Freeman -Half-life

This dude from the good old Half-life showed everyone what it means to be a real hero. Of course, many who have played Half-life can ask themselves a reasonable question: “Under what circumstances did the candidate of physical and mathematical sciences manage to learn how to fight so cool with a mount, control equipment and shoot from all types of firearms and not only weapons!”. The second question immediately pops up: “If I become a physicist, will they teach me this?”. In any case, Freeman, even though he is always silent, has balls of steel. Maybe that’s why he’s always silent? To be able to get out of a research complex infected with any unknown garbage, to survive the horrors of a strange world with all sorts of Khthulkhs, to become a hero of a generation — you can immediately see who the real bro is here. nine0013

2. Tommy Vercetti — Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

I don’t remember any of the characters in the entire series except Tommy and his hilarious Hawaiian shirt. Perhaps, of course, because I literally played this part to the holes, and, perhaps, because of all the heroes, it was Tommy who was the coolest and harshest. He was chic voiced, he had character, charisma and strong unshaven. Now he is trying to cope with crowds of enemies, then he fights with the police on the «five stars», so he negotiates with a prostitute for a hookup, but he talks nicely with fakers and friends. This guy has his own charm, charisma, slight indifference and steel will. nine0013

1. Duke Nukem

It’s hard to come up with an even more testosterone character than old Duke. I remember this guy with pleasure, his cool way of speaking, his unreal severity and incredible self-confidence. Pleasant impressions from Duke were not spoiled even by the frankly shitty last game, which I could not stand even an hour.
