Development

At Capcom Comic Con 2010, Yoshinori Ono, dressed in a white kimono for the occasion, talks about the future Street Fighter . Suddenly, someone calls out to him from the back of the room. This is the producer of Tekken 6 , Katsuhiro Harada. The whole room stands still, unaware of the purpose of this phenomenon. What follows is a long, good-natured staging by the two producers that ends in a video game confrontation. Without any official announcement, viewers are witnessing the first crossover, in which mixes the world of Tekken and the world of Street Fighter .

Katsuhiro Harada (producer of Tekken ) and Yoshinori Ono (producer of Street Fighter ) say that when the time comes, they will let sales and journalist ratings determine the two games: “We want to challenge ourselves in every aspect, as well as in sales.» and seduce fans of both series.
Indeed, each of the games will be developed in-house without any interference from the neighboring company, just to see who will make the best version of this concept crossover .

During development discussions with Sony initiated the idea of including the character as a guest. Cole’s character is chosen and designed according to his first iteration from inFamous, as seemed to have adapted his moves to a fighting game. It was later revealed that Sucker Punch, the company that developed the inFamous license for Sony, was developing the second episode. The developers at Capcom didn’t know much about this sequel. Sucker Punch showed them the game while it was being developed, and for consistency, Capcom decided to redesign the character to include weapons acquired in Opus 2.

Synopsis

game system

General

The general accepted game system is tag team , the name is directly borrowed from Catch professional, where you can see how several teams of wrestlers (two or more) take turns during the game. Thus, the player controls not one character, but two main characters, who can change each other during the game. If one of the two characters is defeated, round ends. This system is inspired by Tekken Tag Tournament , a game favored by Yoshinori Ohno. It is enriched, in contrast to the latter, with a multiplayer mode that can develop from two to four players during the game, each of which controls a character that is always on the relay. However, for a limited amount of time, all four characters can be on the playing surface at the same time for the first time in a classic fighting video game (named by ‘s Scramble mode).

controversy

The release of Street Fighter X Tekken was the subject of various controversies regarding the commercial policies of publisher and creator of the video game Capcom, which had already been set apart by voluntarily selling downloadable content already on disc in another title, Resident Evil 5 . Here they are accused of blocking characters in order to sell them later. The French site Jeuxvideo.com, while giving a good review of the game, nonetheless emphasized the presence of «offensive DLC». Some players, by hacking the Xbox 360 version of the game, could use the characters in question online, as well as display the full list on the selection screen. Puyo de Gamecult highlighted this important point in his test: “Providing quasi-finalized characters upstream, with a paid activation code, again pushes the margin of acceptance. Aside from the Collector’s Edition gems and upcoming costumes, the addition may be rounder than expected. »

Some elements show that the game was created on the basis of Street Fighter IV , and in the eyes of the most active players it gives the impression of a game made in a hurry or laziness on the part of the programmers: on the one hand, the visual style and the identical transfer of Street Fighter characters, and on the other hand, to animate most of the Tekken characters, which are reworks of 90,005 Street Fighter IV characters, 90,008 missing from the game. The most striking examples are:

  • Ogre is a recolor of Set to which armor has been added.
  • During the intro and victory cutscene, Kazuya uses the same animation as Sagat in Super Street Fighter IV .
  • Although Julia could have already done similar moves in Tekken, here is lunge kick and shoulder pinch from Yun and Senkyuutai from Yang.
  • Lars has a Jaguar Kick in Adon.

However, the game is presented and sold as a new game and not as an add-on or patch for Street Fighter IV .

[ref. needed]

In addition, the hack of the Xbox 360 version of the game revealed that the game disc contained Megaman and Pac-Man characters exclusive to the Playstation 3 version and could be made fully playable by changing the programming code there. Capcom responded to this that any game has unused data present in their final released version, and that the two characters, although present, fully programmed and simply locked to the disc, would remain exclusive to that version. PlayStation 3, and that there were no plans to make them available for the Xbox 360 in the future.

Capcom, which initially denied intentional content blocking shortly thereafter promoted by US consumer organizations, specifically Better Business Bureau , responded: flexible and responsive gameplay throughout the lifecycle of the game. There is no difference between including locked DLCs on disc in the game and offering them for download later. »

Promotion and editions

Mad Catz, an arcade stick maker, has signed an agreement with Capcom to manufacture Street Fighter X Tekken accessories, the Street Fighter X Tekken Fighstick Pro controller is the first product of this agreement. It is on sale for 1,000 copies (on PS3 and Xbox 360) in for $160.

Anime short trailer forms produced and released for promotional purposes during game development:

  • Episode 01: Kazuya introduces Jin to the person he is looking for: Ryu.
  • Episode 02: Marduk and King knock out Mike Haggar in the ring when Poison suddenly appears and releases wrestler extraordinaire named Hugo.
  • Episode 03: Rufus crosses the road with a certain Bob in the restroom of a restaurant. Rufus, completely annoyed with Ken Masters, thought he recognized the man in Bob because of his red clothes and blond hair. Then comes a fight between these two big guys at Marshall Lowe’s restaurant in front of Zangief and Julia, who suddenly decide to join in the atmosphere.

In addition to the regular classic edition, the publisher is launching a special edition on the market, which includes: comic book, developed by UDON; four packs of nine gems and a replica of a miniature arcade machine in the game’s colors.

House

Reviews

In general, the reviews about the game are positive. Jeuxvideo.com describes it as «certainly one of Capcom’s best crossovers to date.» However, the game was poorly received by gamers. The game was released too quickly at the same time as other fighting games and had many shortcomings: resemblance to Street Fighter IV consisting of too bright visuals due to gems, physics of the latter spoiled by confrontation, uselessness of pandora mode, poor balance characters and fights that mostly end with Time Over without players volunteering to play on time, and in particular the excessive presence of additional paid content. In addition, many players found bugs and slowdowns in the PlayStation 3 version of the game, while this version with the most exclusives is the version used in competition. Lost game sounds in online mode.

In response to the dissatisfaction of the players, Capcom developed a free downloadable update for the game called «Version 2013», released on . This update rebalances characters, reduces annoying visual effects such as glittering gems or flickering life bar when hitting a character, slowdown times in the game, and various bug fixes. This update was generally well received by players.

Sales

In one month, the game sold 1,400,000 copies worldwide, although Capcom had hoped to reach 2 million. Meanwhile, the PlayStation Vita version only sold 5,420 copies in the week it was released in Japan.

Street Fighter X Tekken Mobile: Two Giants Clash on iOS

All fans of Street Fighter and Iron Fist , here it is! The heroes of two cult fighting games once again clashed with each other in this dynamic scuffle, but now it’s all happening on the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad. The mobile version is somewhat different from the console version, but not for the worse. Today you will find out what 9 has prepared for you1538 Capcom !

It makes no sense to talk about the plot. The fighters of Street Fighter and Tekken decided to arrange a grandiose massacre. They got bored of fighting separately. So they made a real mess. And we will take a direct part in it.

The gameplay is 2vs2 based, which means there’s nothing stopping you from choosing one fighter from the Iron Fist league and another from the Street Fighter league to fight side by side. In this case, the first selected fighter will always be the main one, regardless of the selected league, and whether you switch to your partner or not. Since the game was made by Capcom, the father of Street Fighter, the gameplay is similar to the same Street Fighter IV Volt on iOS. Even Tekken’s characters are stylized as anime, which, in general, is quite logical.

The game has two scenarios: single player ( Single-Player Mode ) and multiplayer ( Global Battle ). In single player mode, in turn, there are three sub-modes: Arcade (main battle), Trial (training 1vs1) and Training (training 2vs2). Multiplayer consists of: Ranked Match (Wi-Fi) and BT Battle (battles over Bluetooth).

In general, the required minimum in game modes is met. How about management? This is perhaps the most important parameter, and especially in a dynamic fighting game, where the outcome of the fight depends on the convenience of the location and reaction of the buttons. Therefore, I will pay special attention to management.

There are three layouts of buttons to choose from: A, B and C. There are few differences, or rather, only one — the location of the action buttons. The analog stick nestles quietly on the left. Action buttons, i.e.: punch, kick, special attack and character change — on the right. Their order depends on the chosen scheme. If none of the three types suits you, then you can arrange all the elements in a way that suits you (custom). Additional customization options: transparency and display of navigation arrows around the stick.

It cannot be said that the control sensitivity is perfect. However, you can’t call it bad either. If Volt seemed convenient to you, then SFXT will be to your liking. I, at least, even feel more comfortable playing, and thanks to the training mode, in general, you can quickly get used to the tactics for each character.

There is one special feature in the iOS version — roulette. It activates with Forward + X and gives a random upgrade for Pandora’s Box . How have I not talked about this interesting feature yet? I am correcting myself.

Pandora’s Box can be assigned before a fight. In total, there are three mutually exclusive «styles» for which these boxes are used: strength, protection or speed. The essence is very simple — at a critical (for you) moment of the battle, you can use a magic box in exchange for depriving your partner of help. This will give your character additional energy, which may be enough to change the outcome of the fight for the better for you. In the store, you can improve the power of these boxes for received credits or purchased (IAP) gold.

The graphics look really good on a Retina display. Capcom’s trademark special effects make themselves felt. Bright colors and juicy fireballs add even more dynamics to the already dynamic gameplay. The characters themselves are made quite adequately, and the background looks very attractive. Only now, in comparison with the console SFXT, the graphics are noticeably curtailed. This applies to both animation and the number of frames.

Bluetooth fights are not embarrassing, which cannot be said about online. Brakes will be ubiquitous. But as long as you can’t get away from them, we are waiting for updates. Also, new characters are expected, as the range of current ones is less impressive.

Total There is no doubt, we have a hit again and again from Capcom. The universe of Street Fighter vs the universe of Iron Fist. Ryu’s «Hadoken» vs. Kazuya’s crushing fist. This is the loudest fight and now it has come to iOS. Solid gameplay, colorful graphics, a few tricks and juicy dynamics — this is the whole Street Fighter X Tekken Mobile !

Pros:
+ dynamic gameplay
+ characters from two game titles together
+ saturated game process
+ Kapkomovskiy style
+ thoughtful control system

disadvantages:
— Online brakes
— Cutting graphics
— annoying pop -up windows
