There are two models of PS5, but which one’s right for you? Here’s the pricing, release date and differences between standard and digital versions.

The PlayStation 5 has been much sought after since its debut in 2020 — often leading to difficulties in actually buying one. But now that there’s plenty of stock available, just one question remains — which PS5 should you buy?
As well as the standard model — that’s the one with the disc drive — there’s a slightly slimmer, cheaper version, in the form of the PS5 Digital Edition.
So, here are the differences between the two machines to give you an idea of which would suit you best.

What’s the same between the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition?
Specs
The key thing to know about the two versions of the PS5 is that almost all of their components are identical — you get the exact same graphical performance, processor and storage options regardless of which you pick.
That means both have an eight-core Zen 2 processor, running at 3.5GHz per core, with 16GB of GDDR6 RAM to call upon.
That’s backed up by a GPU that can manage 10.28 TFLOPS across 36 CUs, a whole bunch more than even the PS4 Pro could manage. Storage-wise, both PS5s have 825GB custom SSDs, which can read data at a lightning-quick 5.5GB/s while you game. Long loading times are a thing of the past.
Design
The two consoles also have very similar designs, both featuring the same wing-tip style flaring sides and white casing, with blue lighting accenting the package nicely.
They’re the same size in height when stood vertically, but the standard PlayStation 5 is significantly thicker as a result of its disc drive. It’s most noticeable at the base of the console, where this change has been made.
What’s different between the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition?
As you may have worked out by now, there are only two key differences between each PS5 model — the disc drive and price.
The standard PS5 has a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player that will let you play games from physical discs, as well as watch Ultra HD movies. This will naturally mean that you can trade in games after you’ve played them and lend them to friends. It’ll also mean that almost every PS4 game you have on disc will also work through backward compatibility.
By contrast, the PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive, which means all games you play will need to be purchased digitally, and you will only be able to stream media rather than playing it from the drive.
The absence of disc drive does, of course, make the Digital Edition of the PlayStation 5 cheaper than the full version.
It’s generally $100 / €100 / £90 / ¥10,000 less, which could be really enticing depending on your budget.
Which should you get?
The choice between the two PS5s comes down to a couple of factors: how you buy your games and whether you want to watch DVDs, Blu-rays and 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays.
If you’ve been loving digital storefronts for ages and hardly ever pick up a disc, then the Digital Edition makes sense. It’ll save you some money up-front, cut down the size of the console, and save you from the clutter of game boxes. Plus, with the recent addition of digital games catalogues available through PlayStation Plus membership, there are 100s of games you can feed it for just one monthly fee.
However, if you like having physical discs or use trade-in services all the time to afford new releases, then you will be hamstrung by the Digital Edition.
It’s worth noting too that you’ll likely have either PS5 for a good number of years, so it wouldn’t take long to make back the price difference between the two models by trading in games or lending and borrowing copies with your friends or family.
Also, if you have slow broadband, it’s worth remembering that all-digital PS5 games can turn out to be lengthy downloads.

What we know about PS5
Video game fans have been thinking about the PlayStation 5 version since the launch of the PlayStation 4. We know for sure that the PS5 will be coming from October 2018, and since then, Sony has gradually released information.

Which PlayStation 5 models? The
PS5 will be released in a standard $500 console version and $400 for a non-drive digital version.
Both models have the same hardware specs, an octa-core Ryzen processor, an AMD Radeon GPU, 16GB of memory, and 825GB of SSD storage. Both also have three USB Type A ports and one USB Type C port.
A range of accessories including DualSense wireless controllers, charging station, media remote control, PULSE 3D wireless headset and HD 1080p camera will also be compatible with both versions.
Standard Edition
The Standard Edition of the console includes an optical drive capable of playing PS5 games and compatible PS4 games from previous versions (and there are many great PS4 games worth playing). You can also play DVDs and Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. The slot machine itself weighs just under 10 pounds. When placed on the floor, it measures 15 x 4 x 10 inches.

Differences between digital and standard PS5
The lack of a drive in the digital version is worth reconsidering for several reasons.

How will the lack of drive affect the games?
Some players have switched to digital games because digital games don’t take up physical space. However, some players still prefer current versions of games. Disc games take up less digital space and are considered collectibles by some.
Another advantage of real games is resale value. It will no longer be possible to buy, play and resell games using the PS5 digital edition. Also, as mentioned above, we don’t yet fully understand how backwards compatibility will work on PS5, but it may require a physical PS4 disc and the ability to read it on PS5.
Actual gaming benefits may also depend on the number of different games you are likely to play in a given period of time. The PS5 game presale information recommends a minimum available storage of 26GB to 66GB per game.
With an average of 43.5 GB per game on standard PS5 memory, there are about 19 mid-size games without DLC before the digital owner invests in external memory. If you’re a gamer who likes big games and lots of downloadable content, this number can drop very quickly.
If you’re looking forward to lower latency in predominantly online games like Fortnite and Fall Guys, you’ll probably enjoy the digital version. If you can’t wait for the fast loading times and breathtaking visuals in AAA games like the next Assassin’s Creed or Elder Scrolls, you might want to consider the Standard Edition.
PlayStation Network account and PlayStation Plus requirements
Without a drive, all games (as well as other media including music, movies, and TV shows) must be purchased digitally for the PS5 digital version, so a PlayStation Network account is the difference between ownership gaming machine and paperweight.

Which PS5 model is right for you?
Which PS5 model is right for you mainly depends on how you currently use your PS4.
If you primarily play physical games and watch a lot of Blu-ray discs on PS4, a $100 surcharge for PS5 Standard Edition will allow you to continue playing these games and watching movies on physical media.
If you mainly use your PS4 to stream movies, TV shows and music, and mostly play digital versions of games anyway, then the PS5 digital version will give you more of what you want.
