Troubleshooting Guide

Is your webcam not working? Are you not seeing an image or any information? No problem, just follow these simple steps and we’ll get your webcam working in a jiffy:

Step 1.

If you are using an external webcam, double check that it is plugged in via USB socket and that its connection cable is not damaged. When plugging in a new accessory like the webcam, your computer typically will notify you through a small audio signal or an on screen notification. For Mac users, you can check hardware status at: About This Mac → System Report → Devices. For Windows, navigate to the Control Panel, and select ‘View Devices and Printers’ to see current devices.

Step 2.

Make sure that all of your software is up to date. This includes both your operating system, webcam drivers, and software that you use it with. In case you are using an external webcam, check whether it is compatible with the software you are trying to use.

Step 3.

Some webcam models have an «ON/OFF» switch — make sure that if yours has one — it is set to «ON»

Step 4.

Only have a single application open that has access to your camera feed. Having more than one application consuming camera feed can cause the camera not to show up correctly.

How does it work?

1. Click ‘Start Test’

After you click this button, the test should start.

2. Click ‘Allow’ on any pop-ups

There will be a pop-up on your screen asking for permission. Click “Allow” so that we can test your webcam.

3. Review your webcam’s feed

Review you webcam’s image and video quality. Make sure that the lighting looks fine.

About WebcamTests.com

This site provides a free online tool to test the camera and make sure it works properly. In other words, you can test the camera directly from your browser without having to install third party software. Despite such a simple method, you can test your camera with «one click» on different devices, including laptops, smartphones, TVs, tablets and others. Regardless of the device and operating system, as a result of testing, you will learn not only if your camera works, but a lot of useful information about it (for example, the name of the camera, resolution, frame rate, number of colors, image quality and many other characteristics). In addition, if any problems are found with your camera, you will receive tips on how to fix them. After completing the test, among other things, you will be able to take photos with the camera and download them to your device. You can also view the camera in full screen mode and evaluate it.

Why do I need a camera check?

  • You have purchased or connected a new camera and want to check if it works properly (camera viewer displays live image).
  • You have doubts about the parameters of a recently purchased camera and want to test your camera and its functions (because not all sellers are honest).
  • You have several cameras and want to compare them to see which one is better (the better the camera, the higher the «Quality Rating»).
  • Wondering if your camera has a built-in microphone or built-in speaker (just note that this feature is a bit buggy).
  • Want to know how many frames per second (FPS) your camera is displaying (low FPS causes video lag).
  • Want to know how many colors a photo taken with your camera contains (more colors means better image quality).
  • Would like to know the resolution of your camera (high quality cameras have high resolution and can provide HD video calls).
  • Check the quality of the camera compared to other cameras (for this you need to leave a review about your camera).

How can I test my camera?

Checking your camera with our online tool is very easy: just wait until all media devices are found and then click the «Test Camera» button. If this button does not appear and you have not received any notifications, there is most likely an error with your browser. To help you, write to us at [email protected]

How is the camera tested?

  1. First of all, it is determined if the browser supports functions for accessing multimedia devices. If so, a list of discovered cameras and the necessary controls are displayed.
  2. When you click the Test Camera button, the browser will ask you for permission to launch the camera on this site.
  3. After granting access, the camera will be launched and you will see the video in the viewer (view area) of the camera.
  4. Now it’s time to determine the maximum resolution of the camera (among other things, this will calculate the number of megapixels and detect the supported video standard).
  5. The image quality (including number of colors, brightness, saturation) is then determined.
  6. After some measurements, the number of frames per second (FPS) is determined.
  7. Among the latest tests, the estimated bandwidth required for videoconferencing is calculated.
  8. Finally, test results, tooltips, and additional controls (ie, take a photo, turn on full screen, stop the camera, update data) are displayed.

Why leave a review?

After completing the test, you can leave feedback about your camera. This is not required, but we recommend doing this to help other people get a good camera and get around the bad ones. In addition, after posting your review, you will see how good your camera is (that is, you will find out the place in the ranking of the best cameras).

System requirements

To test the camera, all you need is a modern browser (unfortunately, Internet Explorer is not) that supports functions for accessing multimedia devices. As you can see, our camera test tool does not require any additional software such as Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight, or browser add-ons.

    About camera test

The online camera tester is a good tool to test the camera and get technical information about it. Of course, it allows you to find out if the camera is working correctly, but it does a lot of tests, and for this reason it is a bit slow.

For those who just need to know if the camera is working, I have developed a basic webcam test. It’s fast, simple and free. This test allows you to test your webcam online to make sure it is working properly. This test only provides a few details about the camera (more precisely, the name of the camera and the default resolution).
