Star Wars SC 38 Reimagined, uploaded on the YouTube channel FXitinPost in May 2019, is both a Fan Film and a Fan Edit.

This 6 minutes-long short is essentially a much more dynamic reimagining of the famous 38th scene (hence «SC 38») of Star Wars: A New Hope — the lightsaber duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader on board the first Death Star — with modern filming techniques, more elaborate fight choreographies, more use of the Force and plenty of throwbacks to the films that canonically precede A New Hope.

    • Blade Lock: Vader and Obi-Wan end up twice in a lightsaber lock with their heads very close to the energy blades.
    • Combat Pragmatist: Vader isn’t above punching Obi-Wan, which he does a few times during the duel.
    • Fake Shemp: The short is made of both original shots from 1976 and shots filmed by fans. The new Obi-Wan actor’s face is blurred or hidden by objects depending on the shots so he can blend in better with the shots of Alec Guinness. There also seems to be some pretty clever digital superimposition of Guinness’ face on the actor at times.
    • Hitler Cam: There’s one such shot of Vader right after Obi-Wan activates his lightsaber.
    • Leitmotif:
      • The short makes ample use of the dramatic John Williams tracks from Revenge of the Sith to underline the fact that two former friends meet again and fight.
      • Vader’s theme was added at the end, it was not present in A New Hope.
    • Meaningful Echo: Right before Vader delivers the killing blow to Obi-Wan, the voices of Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor from the last time Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan saw each other (in Revenge of the Sith) can be heard.
    • Mind over Matter:
      • Much like he did against Luke in The Empire Strikes Back, Vader uses the Force to hurl objects at Obi-Wan during the fight.
      • Vader also Force-pushes Obi-Wan against a wall, and Obi-Wan Force-pushes him as a last move before turning at Luke and making one with the Force.
    • Incendiary Exponent: Vader gets briefly set on fire after walking through an explosion made by Obi-Wan striking an explosive barrel with his lightsaber
    • Mythology Gag: The shot of Vader’s entrance igniting his lightsaber when confronting Obi-Wan recalls his scene in the climax of Rogue One, with similar smoke effects on the ground.
    • Overcrank: Vader walks in slow motion when pronouncing «When I left you I was but the learner. Now I am the master!».
    • Re-Cut: The clunky fight choreography shots of the original scene have been mostly removed. The scene where Han Solo chases stormtroopers while shouting and shoots one dead before fleeing has also been removed.
    • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: Vader throws his lightsaber at Obi-Wan after hurling him against a wall. It gets planted in the wall right next to the Jedi Master’s head much like a normal throwing sword would be. Vader then uses the Force to move it so that it takes off Obi-Wan’s head, but he ducks out of the way.
    • Weapon Twirling: Vader twirls his lightsaber at one point during the fight.

highlights from Vanity Fair material on the future of Star Wars — Movies and series on DTF

And photos with the stars of the upcoming Lucasfilm series.

Vanity Fair magazine published a large article dedicated to the George Lucas franchise — primarily television projects for Disney+. The writers spoke to the cast, showrunners, and Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy, who shared details about ongoing Star Wars series and films.

We chose the most interesting from the text.

    Feature films

According to Kennedy, the film company has a certain plan for the development of the franchise, but so far the most active work is being done on series. Movies will be released much less often, and not every year, as after the release of the seventh episode.

There are a number of films in the pipeline, none of which have a tentative release date yet.

    • Taika Waititi Movie , directed by Jojo Rabbit and Thor, from a screenplay by Christy Wilson-Cairns (1917, Last Night in Soho), is due out ahead of everyone else.
    • Rogue Squadron by Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins — Postponed but not cancelled.
    • Rian Johnson’s trilogy, director of The Last Jedi, was «frozen» due to the director’s busyness with the continuation of Knives Out, but the idea was not abandoned.
    • There are no concrete plans for a film with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige as a producer.

The president of Lucasfilm noted that she is hesitant to use the word «trilogy» in relation to the upcoming films, as she considers «Star Wars» as a big story that connects all films and series.

The uniqueness of Star Wars is that it is essentially one story. George has always shot his films as episodes. Ironically, he was essentially doing storytelling in a series format. He was influenced by Flash Gordon and cliffhangers in movies. All this marked the DNA of Star Wars, so it seems to me that the transition to television for us came very naturally.

    Kathleen Kennedy President Lucasfilm

Kennedy also hinted that in the future the studio does not plan to show old characters like Han Solo or Luke Skywalker performed by other actors than those who originally played these roles. According to her, she and other producers «learned» from the failure of «Solo» at the box office.

    Series

The current release schedule for the Star Wars series is as follows.

    • Obi-Wan Kenobi — May 27,
    • Andor — summer 2022
    • The Mandalorian Season 3 — late 2022 or early 2023
    • Ahsoka — 2023
    • The Acolyte — no date
    • Untitled Jon Watts TV series («Spider-Man: No Way Home») — undated

The fact that Watts, who previously left the director’s post of the Marvel film about the Fantastic Four, will direct the show for Lucasfilm, was first revealed in the Vanity Fair material.

The show currently only has a working title of Grammar Rodeo, a reference to an episode of The Simpsons about Bart and his friends borrowing their parents’ car without asking and leaving for a week of entertainment. The show has been described as «a space-age version of the ’80s Amblin films about kids and teens» and will star four 11-12 year olds. The plot is being kept under wraps, but will take place after Return of the Jedi, around the same period as The Mandalorian.

    Obi-Wan Kenobi

    • Ewan McGregor admitted that he was somewhat disillusioned with Star Wars after the public backlash against The Phantom Menace. However, in 2017, when he was asked to present one of the episodes as part of a film marathon, he realized that he remembers films with warmth. After that, the actor began to say in an interview that he did not mind returning to the role of Obi-Wan.

Then they asked me if I wanted to introduce cinema, and I didn’t do anything like that then, and suddenly it dawned on me that I really really want to do this. Why? Don’t know. I think it really has to do with the fact that I’ve matured.

    Ewan McGregor, actor

    • Even when the film about Obi-Wan was planned to be made, McGregor began working on the project as a producer and himself wanted the story to tell about how Kenobi lost faith, but will find it again.
    • The filmmakers confirmed that Darth Vader was indeed not in the first versions of the script, but they did not specify who was supposed to be the antagonist.
    • Hayden Christensen decided to return to the role after speaking with director and showrunner Deborah Chow, who interested him in approaching Vader as someone with «a sense of power mixed with a sense of being a slave.»

For me personally, in all the prequels and even the original trilogy, there was a certain dynamic between Anakin and Obi-Wan, a kind of love story. And it seemed to me that it would be difficult not to add to the story the man who so hurt Kenobi.

I don’t think Obi-Wan can ever be indifferent to him. What makes their relationship so special is that they loved each other.

    Deborah Chow, showrunner

    «Andor»

    • The series about Cassian Andor, starring Diego Luna, tells how a future member of the mission to steal the blueprints of the Death Star joined the resistance.
    • The action will begin with the Empire destroying Andor’s home planet, and his new home will be the main setting of the first season — apparently, the authors have plans for a sequel.
    • The show will have two main characters. In parallel with the Andor storyline, it will talk about Senator Mon Mothma — she will be played by Genevieve O’Reilly.

    Ahsoka

    • The Clone Wars writer/producer Dave Filoni was already planning a standalone series about Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice when he hired Rosario Dawson to play her in an episode of The Mandalorian.
    • Whether Darth Vader will appear in Ahsoka, and whether Admiral Thrawn will become the main villain, is still unknown — Lucasfilm wants to keep the plot of the series a secret.
    • According to Filoni, the show will feel less like The Mandalorian as the episodes will be more connected to each other.

Yes, this series will move towards one specific goal, I did not conceive it as a series of separate adventures. I want this character to do just that, and I think the fans want it too. After all, they were already very attached to her.

I’ve only recently begun to realize that all the kids who watched The Clone Wars are now much older. And we are very glad to see again what we grew up with.

    Dave Filoni, writer, producer

    • In addition to Dawson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead («Scott Pilgrim», «Cloverfield 10») will play in the series, but it is not known what role she will play.

    Acolyte

    • The series will take place roughly 100 years before The Phantom Menace, during the Rise of the Republic, which has been described as a kind of renaissance for the Star Wars universe.

We will try to look at what this era, about which we do not yet know so much, was politically, personally, spiritually. When I watched The Phantom Menace, I always wondered: “How did it all come to this?” How did it get to the point where a Sith could infiltrate the Senate without any Jedi realizing? Something went wrong? […]

At that time, the Jedi wore mostly white and gold, almost as if they never got dirty. Never work «in the field». The idea is that they have such uniforms because they rarely fight.

    Leslie Headland, showrunner

    • «Acolyte» has been in development for about two years, at the moment the scripts are almost ready, and the casting is still ongoing.
    • According to media reports, Amandla Stenberg (The Hunger Games) will star in the show, but this has not been officially announced.

the problems of the new Star Wars trilogy — Movies and series on DTF

Why the sequel trilogy is the weakest in the Skywalker Saga.

    8468
    views

At the end of 2012, when it became known that George Lucas was selling Lucasfilm to the Disney conglomerate, it was immediately announced that a trilogy of Star Wars sequels was in production — and the very idea of creating a new trilogy seemed very controversial.

The post-Endor period worked well in many of the Expanded Universe novels, but it was clear that Disney was not going to film these stories. Therefore, two years later, in April 2014, the company moved the events of the Expanded Universe to Legends, and the new canon, which included six episodes and The Clone Wars, was called the Unified Canon.

The Expanded Universe is far from perfect, yes. But now, after the trilogy of sequels, some of its moments no longer seem so absurd.

And this decision divided the fans of the universe: some believed that Disney «thrown in the trash» a lot of good comics and novels, while others believed that a rethinking of the canon would bring order to the timeline, and also prevent some controversial decisions of the Expanded Universe. In fact, the new trilogy only generated more controversy and discussion.

Lack of chemistry between new characters

Luke, Han and Leia were united and brought closer together by the adventure they lived through. They found time for jokes, but also did not forget to cover and take care of each other. The friendship and affection of these characters is easy to believe.

Anakin, Obi-Wan and Padmé were connected not only by adventure, but also by politics, and even by mere chance. The history of this trinity is more complicated — and if the love line of young Vader and Padme can still be called poorly written (in terms of dialogues), then Anakin and Obi-Wan’s friendship did not raise questions. Yes, young Kenobi was initially wary of the boy, but Qui-Gon’s death and the promise made to him brought the characters closer.

What about the new trinity — Rey, Finn and Poe? What kind of chemistry can we talk about if Rey and Poe met directly only at the very end of The Last Jedi? Someone will say that the relationship between Rey and Ben Solo (Kylo Ren) is much more important in the new trilogy — but even here there are nuances.

Rey and Ren’s relationship develops purely at the behest of the writer/director, and not because the characters are really drawn to each other. There’s one scene where Rey calls Kylo a «monster» and practically kills her. But a couple of days pass, and now the heroine does not wish him death, but quite the opposite — she tries to understand him and, repeating Luke’s arc, return the fallen hero to the Light.

The end of The Last Jedi indicates the final rupture of any relationship between the characters — but here JJ Abrams and Chris Terrio come into play, and you can forget about the «closing the door» between Rey and Ren, as if this scene never happened .

    Confrontation between two directors

In The Force Awakens, JJ Abrams skillfully arranged plot hooks, raised themes that would become dominant for the entire trilogy, showed an intriguing and mysterious villain — in general, he started the trilogy quite well.

However, Rian Johnson, having inherited the seventh episode from Abrams, decided not to continue his storylines. Being a fairly original director, he took up the complete deconstruction of the Star Wars formula and built the script around the constant surprise of the viewer. As a result, both fans and ordinary viewers took the eighth episode rather coldly — user 43% approval is proof of this.

The last, ninth episode of the new trilogy was originally supposed to be directed by Colin Trevorrow. But in September 2017, the director was fired from his post with the official reason: «creative differences.» A couple of days later, Disney announced that JJ Abrams would return to Star Wars and complete the trilogy.

    Colin Trevorrow

Returning to the director’s chair, JJ needed less than a year to write the script — and then he made two very controversial decisions. Firstly, Abrams refused all the screenwriting developments of Colin Trevorrow — and he had been poring over the script for two years and definitely had a finished version in his hands. Secondly, Abrams invited Chris Terrio as co-authors with an extremely dubious track record — he had a hand in the controversial Batman v Superman and the failed Justice League.

    JJ Abrams and Chris Terrio

Filming was scheduled for August 1, 2018, so the Terrio-Abrams duo didn’t have much time to think through ideas. Now, watching the final film, one gets the feeling that JJ was trying to return the story to its course. In The Force Awakens, he set a certain vector for the development of history, from which The Last Jedi deviated greatly. Despite this, in Skywalker. Sunrise ”it was more logical to continue the development of the ideas of Rian Johnson, but Abrams decided otherwise.

In Sunrise, JJ tried to cram his vision for both episodes 8 and 9. I tried to put the plot of two pictures into one. And history suffered from this. Constant haste and very tight deadlines can be traced in the confusion of the narration of the first two acts of the film. What can we talk about if the fact of Palpatine’s survival is revealed in the opening credits, and according to the plot, all the characters perceive this as a fact, without even asking the question «how did he do it. »

And although J.J. Abrams has already explained that he did not try to rewrite The Last Jedi with his film, the key decisions of Rising tell a completely different story.

It seems to me that it would have made more sense to take Colin Trevorrow’s script and make his own corrections to it. Or maybe Disney themselves insisted that Abrams write his script from scratch — we will not know. It won’t be until early this year that we’ll know that even Trevorrow’s first draft of the script was head and shoulders above the «graphomania» that Terrio and Abrams rushed to write.

The absence of a single plot of the trilogy

The theme of the original trilogy is the path of the hero. The theme of the prequel trilogy is the journey from hero to villain. And asking yourself the question: “What is the new trilogy about? ”, I can’t think of a clear answer, and it is quite possible that this is my problem. However, if you start to analyze each film of the sequel trilogy as an independent work, then the uncertainty of the overall message is clearly visible.

«The Force Awakens» — about the beginning of a big adventure; about how useless parents brought their son to Darkness; about how the disparity of the New Republic senators had brought the First Order into the galaxy, which was always under their noses, but no one perceived it as a real threat. «The Last Jedi» — about the search for yourself; about the fact that absolutely anyone can become a hero. Skywalker. Rising” is about accepting your own path, the path of the Jedi, even if your bloodline is shrouded in Darkness. The key problem lies in the messages of the eighth and ninth episodes: they are exactly the opposite! And it would have worked if these films had not been combined into a trilogy. And so, it turned out to be a strong directorial statement (“The Last Jedi”), which completely depreciated after the release of the ninth episode.

In a good way, directors J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson should have met back in the summer of 2014 (when Johnson officially joined Star Wars) and discussed the key decisions of their films — just so that there were no misunderstandings. However, I feel the tight schedule of directors and the desire of Disney producers to make each film of the new trilogy as different as possible from each other prevented this meeting.

Misunderstanding of the future of the franchise

After Star Wars was handed over to Disney, Kathleen Kennedy politely turned down George Lucas’ screenwriting for the new trilogy. To continue the franchise, the new president of Lucasfilm chose the strategy of the original Star Wars trilogy — one film, one director. She wanted to make each film of the new trilogy unique in its own way and unlike its predecessor.

But the management didn’t catch one important point: the original trilogy had Lucas, the spiritual inspirer, producer and screenwriter of his own idea. And the “one film, one director” model only works if a good producer is at the helm.

    George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy

The sequel trilogy lacked its own Kevin Feige — a man who would follow the work of the directors, at the same time thinking through the story ten steps ahead. Kennedy tried to be such a person, but she failed to repeat the success of Lucas, to put it mildly. And the reason for this is a number of key controversial decisions.

    Trilogy suspense

The Force Awakens was a good continuation of the franchise and seemed like a good start to a trilogy. Yes, the movie was a lot like the very first Star Wars. However, if you review the same «Phantom Menace», you will notice that the film also structurally repeats «A New Hope».

Lucas himself spoke about the peculiar rhyming of Star Wars, so there is nothing surprising in this approach to creating a film. However, after the premiere of the seventh episode, the fandom split into two camps: those who liked the plot quotes and those who saw it as just a lazy copy of A New Hope.

And after such feedback, Kennedy wanted to make the eighth episode as original as possible. That is why Rian Johnson was given almost complete creative freedom. Johnson decided to write the same script himself, although the studio could well put someone “of his own” in it. Ryan took advantage of the situation and roamed to the fullest, embodying almost all of his ideas in The Last Jedi. As a result, this led to extremely controversial decisions, the intensity of discussion of which has not subsided to this day.

And after such, even more controversial The Last Jedi, Disney producers decided to please the fans as much as possible by embodying at least a couple of theories on the screen — and we know how this decision turned out. Rian Johnson left the story in a position where it’s hard to continue, but after all, his movie is now canon. Therefore, the returned JJ had to be given more time to write the script, or not deny Trevorrow’s developments. So, the ninth episode would have come out at least as a whole piece, and not as a clip with an overly dynamic editing.

Also an important part of Star Wars that has suffered greatly in the sequel trilogy is lightsaber combat. If you remember the prequels, these were real fights to the death. Even the somewhat ridiculous duels from the original trilogy are more believable than the skirmishes between Rey and Kylo Ren. It is simply not interesting to watch their battle, as it looks like a skirmish between two children, where one gives in, then the other.

Disney’s producers misunderstood Star Wars so much that even the love lines — something that the company has always been good at writing — do not develop normally.

    Subjective evaluation

Now, a month after the premiere of «Sunrise», it is even more strongly felt that the finale of the trilogy, and as a result, the trilogy itself, was ruined by excessive haste. Perhaps the episodes should have been given more time to work with the script. Yes, licensed parts would come out not once every two years, but once every three — in any case, it could not be worse.

Those who really needed extra time were Abrams and Terrio. After The Last Jedi, it would be wiser to postpone the premiere of the ninth episode to give the authors more time to think through the plot — after all, the film ends the long 40-year Skywalker saga.
