Star wars new films: New Star Wars movie and TV releases planned for 2023 and beyond

New Star Wars movie and TV releases planned for 2023 and beyond

Star Wars is in a very weird place right now. Disney has already completed its own Skywalker trilogy and closed that book on that story, but there are still tons of Star Wars projects that are somewhere on their way to theaters and streaming.

Disney’s upcoming Star Wars lineup stretches as far into the past as the High Republic and may even pass the Skywalker Saga on the timeline one day. There are shows about new characters and old favorites, and plenty of shows to help us better understand the events of one Star Wars movie or another. And while some don’t have formal release dates yet, there’s already trailers for them, like Mandalorian season 3. Then there’s The Acolyte, which hopes to capitalize on Lucasfilm’s EU business in live-action for the first time. As for new movies, Disney is a little bit more quiet, but there are a least a few on the very distant horizon.

With so many things planned for the Star Wars universe, here’s a look at all the shows that we know coming to Disney Plus, the movies that will arrive in theaters, and when you can expect to see each and every one of them.

The animated series The Bad Batch is coming back for a second season at the beginning of 2023 with a two-episode premiere. The exploits of the Clone Force 99 are expected to directly follow the end of season 1.

Technically, season 2 of The Mandalorian happened all the way back in 2020, but you could be forgiven for forgetting considering that The Book of Boba Fett was basically Mandalorian season 2.5. But the official third season is on the way to give us more adventures with Grogu and Din Djarin.

This series will follow Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano, but it’s not exactly clear where the story might take her. We do know that the series will include Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader, so it’s very likely a prequel to the events of The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett — since Vader is dead by then — but that’s about all we know, and it’s still just a guess. But as of Sept. 2022, Ezra Bridger will be there, played by Eman Esfandi.

Confirmed at the 2022 Star Wars Celebration as a 2023 release, Lucasfilm’s other new Star Wars story seems totally detached from key characters from previous movies and shows. Described by creator Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming) a throwback to “’80s Amblin movies” — a catch all for kid-centric adventure movies like Goonies or Explorers or basically anything riffed on by Stranger Things over the last few years — the show stars Jude Law and a ragtag group of (unannounced) kid actors. Little else is known about the plot other that it takes place around the time of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, but knowing that Watts made a similar though edgier throwback with his 2015 chase thriller Cop Car, one suspects Skeleton Crew will also nod to George Lucas’ love of things that go fast.

Image: Lucasfilm/Disney

The fact that this movie is directed by Taika Waititi and co-written by Waititi and Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917) is a comprehensive list of the things we actually know about it. Waititi said in the summer of 2021 that the movie has a story — makes sense — and that otherwise it’s still being written. As for when it might take place, or come out, we’ll just have to wait and see. With Rogue Squadron getting moved back, Waititi’s movie will be the first Star Wars movie set to hit theaters since Rise of Skywalker.

Image: Lucasfilm/Disney

Perhaps the upcoming Star Wars movie of which we know the most, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron will be directed by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), who described her desire to turn it into the “greatest fighter pilot movie of all time.” While this movie was originally slated for release in December 2023, scheduling conflicts led to a delay and pushed the movie off of Disney’s calendar for that year. However since then, Jenkins as reportedly moved a few things around in order to focus more on Rogue Squadron and the upcoming Wonder Woman 3.

This Star Wars series will be set in the later days of the High Republic at a time when a new Dark Side power is on the rise. Created by Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland, The Acolyte is described by Lucasfilm as a mystery series following a former Padawan who reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the pair are met with something more sinister than they imagined. The series will star Squid Game’s Lee Jung-Jae, Dafne Keen (His Dark Materials), Manny Jacinto (Nine Perfect Strangers), Dean-Charles Chapman (Game of Thrones), and Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix), and is currently filming, which means we might see it in 2023 but guaranteed to get it by 2024.

The head of Disney’s Golden Goose, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Kevin Feige is also set to try to bring his success to Star Wars sometime in the future, but we have no idea when or if it will even happen. Kathleen Kennedy’s last update on the subject came in a Vanity Fair story from May, when she said, “I would love to see what movie he might come up with. […] But right now, no, there isn’t anything specifically.”

Damon Lindelof’s Star Wars movie

Another creative planning on a trip to the Star Wars universe is Lost and The Leftovers creator Damon Lindelof. Little is known about the movie that movie he’s working on, but he recently enlisted the help of a writer’s room to crack the story, which included names like Patrick Somerville (Station Eleven) and Justin Britt-Gibson (The Strain), who will cowrite with Lindelof. The untitled film is set to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), and reportedly set after the events of the sequel trilogy. While original series are what Lindelof is most known for, he’s no stranger to hopping into existing and long-running franchises, having work on Star Trek Into Darkness, Alien prequel Prometheus, and HBO’s Watchmen, in the past. There’s no word yet on when this project can be expected for release.

Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi

Rey has found the legendary Luke Skywalker, hoping to be trained in the ways of the Force. Meanwhile, the First Order seeks to destroy the remnants of the Resistance and rule the galaxy unopposed.

Future Projects of the Star Wars Franchise — Movies and Series on DTF

What Star Wars fans can expect in the near future.

35,813
views

What does the coming day have in store for us? As teacher Yoda said, «the future is foggy», but we still know some plans of the franchise owners. In this article, we have tried to collect information on all major projects officially announced to date, provided that they have not received any information about the cancellation or freezing of production.

Material prepared by Alexander Vinogradov especially for the Star Wars: Niemand’s Shadowfeed community. Published with the permission of the author.

NEW FILMS

FILMS RELEASED IN 2022, 2024 & 2026

Lucasfilm and Disney are actively planning for the near future of the galaxy far, far away, with tentative plans already in place until at least 2026. The three films in question were announced in 2019year and they were to be handled by the creators of the series «Game of Thrones» David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Initially, Benioff and Weiss were supposed to write the script for the entire trilogy, but after an exclusive deal with the streaming service Netflix, their work on Star Wars was reduced: now they had only to outline the general synopsis of the entire story and write the script for the first part, which premiered scheduled for 2022. And then Benioff and Weiss finally quit working with Lucasfilm, which gave rise to a lot of questions, rumors and speculation in the fan community about the state of affairs in the franchise. In early April, Disney issued a press release stating that plans for a 2022 release of the film remained unchanged, but it remains unknown who will lead the project. Pictures scheduled for 2024 and 2026 have also not gone away from the Disney schedule, but absolutely nothing is known about them yet. Now it is not even clear whether all three pictures will form a single trilogy or whether they will be stories independent of each other.

RYAN JOHNSON TRILOGY

After the loud announcement in November 2017, there was almost no information about this trilogy. Due to the mixed reaction of fans to The Last Jedi, rumors spread that the trilogy was canceled altogether, but the director regularly answers all questions that this is not the case.

In an interview with Variety that Johnson gave after the release of his detective Knives Out, the director noted that he was still «in talks» with Lucasfilm and that they were «not ready to make any announcements» yet. Judging by this quote, Ryan’s trilogy is still at some stage of development, and has not been shelved, as many would like it to be

TAIKI WHITETI FILM

This year, on the traditional Star Wars Day, which fans celebrate on May 4th, the news came that Taika Waititi would direct her film based on the most famous space franchise. Recently, Waititi has become one of the most famous figures in Hollywood due to his personal inimitable comedic style. He not only continued the story of Thor in the Marvel Comics Cinematic Universe, but also received a well-deserved Oscar for the film Jojo Rabbit. Star Wars fans are also already familiar with Waititi and have warmly received his work on the first season of The Mandalorian as a director and voice actor. Unfortunately, there is no information about the plot or the date of the premiere of Waititi’s Star Wars film yet.

JD DILLARD PROJECT

In February, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Luacasfilm had chosen director JD Dillard to direct the next Star Wars film. At the same time, it was clarified that at the time of the announcement, the film had already been given the green light. As with other pre-announced projects, no details about this work have been reported. Even THR’s sources weren’t sure if it was a movie that would hit the big screen or a product for the Disney+ streaming service.

KEVIN FEIGI FILM

Yes, in case you didn’t know, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is working on a new movie about a galaxy far, far away. This was reported in September last year by the same edition of The Hollywood Reporter, citing Disney Vice President Alan Horn. According to the publication, Feige has already begun to try on work and managed to offer one of the actors a specific role in his film, if the project is given a go. The fact that Feige has ideas of who could play some very specific role definitely speaks of his strong interest in this work.

At the same time, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy noted that it was Feige who initiated his participation in the work on Star Wars. However, in an interview with The Rolling Stone, she stated that even the work will continue, it is too early to discuss something specific, because there is only the earliest stage of discussion.

NEW SERIES

THE MANDALOREAN SEASON 2

This is the way. The acclaimed series on the Disney+ streaming service took the trend by surprise last year and became a worldwide phenomenon. Season 2 premieres in October. The excitement of the public is fueled by the incoming reports of new heroes who will appear on the show: fans are preparing to see small-screen cameos by Bo-Katan, Boba Fett, Ahsoka Tano, and Koba Vance.

Although the premiere of the second season is still about three months away, according to Variety, in April, the film crew began work on the third season. In addition, in February, the former head of Disney, Bob Iger, said that the possibility of the characters of The Mandalorian getting their own spin-offs should not be ruled out. According to the ubiquitous portal The Hollywood Reporter, we can talk about a separate series about Ahsoka Tano.

OBI-WAN KENOBI 9 MINI-SERIES0003

Prequel Trilogy star Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi. The only thing that is currently known about the plot is that it will take place eight years after Order 66 and the events of the movie «Revenge of the Sith», when Obi-Wan decided to hide on the planet Tatooine. The director’s chair of the series is Deborah Chow, who previously directed two episodes of the first season of The Mandalorian.

Filming is currently scheduled to begin in January 2021 for a 2022 release on the Disney+ streaming service.

PRO CASSIAAN ANDOR SERIES

Rogue One co-star Cassian Andor, played by actor Diego Luna, will get his own show on Disney+. It’s not hard to guess that the series will be a prequel to Rogue One, because, as everyone remembers, Cassian (spoiler!) died at the end of the film. The action will unfold 4 years before the events of Rogue One.

In April, the premiere date of the series was 2021, but due to current global problems, this date is likely to shift. The series will be written, directed and showrunner by Tony Gilroy, who also worked on Rogue One. Episodes for the show will also be written by Dan Gilroy (Stringer), Beau Willimon (House of Cards), and Steven Schiff (The Americans). Among the announced actors, in addition to the obvious Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk (K-2SO), are Genevieve O’ Riley (Mon Mothma), Stellan Skarsgard and Kyle Soller.

SERIES LESLIE HADLAND

Leslie Headland, co-creator of Netflix’s Matryoshka comedy-drama series, will serve as showrunner and writer for a series about an as-yet-unknown female character. The news of this appointment appeared on Star Wars Day on the official website of the franchise, but this information has already been shared by Varirety. There are traditionally few details, but it is known that the action of the series will unfold in a time period different from that in which the events of other projects take place. What this means exactly is unknown. Some people thought it was an alternate timeline, but it’s more likely that the plot will just unfold many years before or many years after the original trilogy.

ANIMATION SERIES «REJECTED BATCH»

Announced just yesterday, the sequel — a spin-off of the animated series «The Clone Wars» will focus on a detachment of extraordinary clones, known as the Bad Batch. The production is being handled by a team led by Dave Filoni, who previously worked on animated series such as The Clone Wars, Rebels and Resistance. The series will be released on the Disney+ streaming service in 2021.

NEW VIDEO GAMES

LEGO STAR WARS: THE SKYWALKER Saga

In the near future, we are waiting for another Star Wars game in the style of the LEGO constructor from the TT Games studio. The game will include events from all 9 films of the saga and about 500 characters. In May, the official «Star Wars This Week» newscast reported that the game would be released on October 20, but the video was later reloaded with a vague «soon» instead of a specific release date. As the reason for this change, two options seem most likely: either a specific date was announced ahead of time, or the release was postponed due to the coronavirus epidemic. It is also possible that the first option could eventually develop into the second.

STAR WARS:

SQUADRONS

The announcement of EA’s first-person flight simulator comes as a pleasant surprise to all players who are hungry for flying in the Star Wars universe. Players will be able to choose one of eight starships, each of which has its own unique characteristics and modify it to their liking and fight in online battles with other players. You can learn the first details about the «lore» of the game from our article, and the description of available locations in Russian was made by our colleagues from the Star Wars Games public. There you can also find other details about the upcoming new product.

The game will be released on October 2 on PlayStation4 and XBox One consoles, as well as on personal computers.

JEDAI: FALLEN ORDER CONTINUE

(and most likely more than one)

The computer game «Jedi: Fallen Order» from the Respawn studio has received favorable reviews from both critics and ordinary players who have long dreamed of a new single-player Star Wars game. According to EA’s financial report, sales of the game exceeded all wildest expectations and amounted to more than 10 million copies. According to the same report, after such a resounding success, it was decided that the game «Jedi: Fallen Order» will mark the beginning of an entire independent franchise, which means that not only sequel games can wait ahead of us (but definitely not before 2022) , but anything else, from comic books to cartoons, TV series or even movies.

STAR WARS: STORIES FROM THE

GALAXY’S RIM

Announced at the end of May, ILMxLAB’s Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge will give players the opportunity to experience their own adventure and explore a corner of the Galaxy Far, Far Away in virtual reality. The game will tell a completely new story, during which players will meet both new and already legendary Star Wars characters on their way, and a variety of passage options and different levels of difficulty will satisfy the desires of a wide variety of players — from avid Star Wars fans to hardcore fans of Star Wars games. virtual reality.

In addition, players will be able to meet new characters and explore previously unknown corners of the planet Batuu — now fans can visit this planet not only in Disney amusement parks, but also from the comfort of their homes.

The game will take place between the events of The Last Jedi and Skywalker. Sunrise» (i.e. at the same time as the «Galactic Edge» entertainment area was «stuck»).

The release date of the game is still unknown.

NEW BOOKS

FLOW OF THE REPUBLIC

Books (and comics along with them) are one of the most interesting parts of the Star Wars franchise. It is in them that the authors get the most freedom to embody a wide variety of ideas. And the main pillar of printed production for the near future will be the Rise of the Republic inter-publishing program, which will unfold 200 years before the events of the Prequel Trilogy. At the initial stage, five authors are involved in the program — Charles Soule, Claudia Gray, Daniel José Alder, Kavan Scott and Justina Island — who will write the first stories for this era and set the direction for its development in the near future. As part of the project, a wide variety of products will be released: adult novels, teenage and children’s stories, at least two comic book series. The project will be kick-started by Charles Soule’s novel Light of the Jedi, which will go on sale on January 5, 2021. However, already now you can read the first chapter of the book: either posted on the IGN website in the original, or in our joint translation with the public Jedi Council. In addition, Justine Island’s teen novel A Test of Courage will be released on the same day as The Light, and on February 2, the youth novel Into the Darkness by Claudia Gray will be released. A start date for the comic series from Marvel and IDW has not yet been announced.

THRAUN: DOMINATION

Another major book project is Timothy Zahn’s new trilogy, Thrawn: Domination. In this episode, Zan tells how the blue-skinned favorite of the public lived in the Chiss Ascendancy before he entered the service of Emperor Palpatine and rose through the ranks to the stars. The first part of the trilogy, titled The Coming Chaos, will go on sale on September 1, but its prologue is already available in both English and Russian. A release date for the second and third books has yet to be announced.

THE MANDALORIAN PRINT SERIES

After a long lull in this direction, at the end of June, the public was finally presented with plans for the publication of printed materials based on the popular TV series The Mandalorian. An art book for the first season of the series, a related original novel by Adam Christopher, a visual guide from Pablo Hidalgo, a teen novelization — of the entire season or some individual episodes are not yet known — from Joe Schreiber, as well as several untitled on present books, magazines and comics.

OTHER BOOKS

Below we briefly list previously announced fiction and reference books, for which either there is not enough information yet, or it is difficult to attribute them to global projects.

— Dr. Aphra (Audio Play) — July 21

— Galaxy’s Edge: A Travel Guide to Batuu — July 26

— Dark Legends — July 28 . Sunrise — July 28

— «Poe Dameron: Free Fall» — August 4,

— The Clone Wars: Stories of Light and Darkness — 25 August

— Star Wars: Lightsaber Collection — 20 October

— From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back — 10 November

— Third part of the Alphabet Squadron trilogy — release date unknown

And this is only a small part of the book production already announced for the near future. In addition, a huge number of a wide variety of children’s books and reference books will go on sale, and it is simply physically impossible to cover each of them.

***

These are only the largest announced projects in a galaxy far, far away, without taking into account rumors and conjectures. As we can see, fans of the saga will have plenty to choose from over the next few years: even if you don’t like some part of the universe, you can always pay attention to something else.

By the way, Alexander Vinogradov is engaged in the official translation of the new Star Wars comics published by Comilfo. Now the series sales in Russia are not very good, but the publisher is not going to stop halfway and release it to the end, but if you suddenly wanted to see the ex-wife of Han Solo or you are wondering how Darth Vader found out about the existence of his son, then now is the time show your interest. In addition, the more likely it will be to see something from this list in Russian in the future. 😉

New Star Wars — all the news in the story
