what is it called and what are there?
Hello everyone! Today we will look for a speaker connector in a computer. You will also learn how it is called correctly, what color it usually happens to be, how to change the active slot and why it is necessary. On a similar topic, you can read the post «How to connect speakers to a computer.»
Which slot do we need
In any system unit that uses an integrated sound card on the motherboard, there are several 3.5 mm jack ports used to connect various devices.
Their color marking has long been standardized:
- Red or pink — microphone input. It is used exclusively for connecting a microphone, including the one built into the headset.
- Blue or cyan — line input. Used to connect all other external audio sources. It is not recommended to insert a microphone here — either the device itself may burn out, or the motherboard may short out.
- Green or salad. The correct name is line output, used to connect audio speakers or headphones.
If you use a headset from a phone with a 3.5 jack, then most likely you won’t be able to use them in a PC (in the system unit) without the appropriate adapter or adapter.
The fact is that the pinout of the plug from such headphones and speakers is slightly different. The speakers use a three-pin jack — two channels plus «ground». There are 4 channels in the headset from the phone: two speakers, «ground» and a microphone. If this is not a headset, but ordinary headphones, in some cases an adapter can solve the problem.
But in modern (new) laptops everything is already provided and you don’t have to worry about it.) The 2.5 jack connector is almost never used anywhere.
Front panel
The front panel of the housing can be equipped with additional slots for connecting a microphone and headphones. As a rule, they either have the same color coding as above, or are marked with the corresponding icons. Please note that for a PC with a headphone jack on the front panel, additional audio drivers must be installed to activate this port — for example, AC’97 or similar.
The convenience is that before changing the connector through which the sound will be output, the OS asks the user when connecting a new device, which of the slots should be used by default.
In which connector to insert audio devices, this is already a matter of personal preferences of the user, since they do not differ in sound quality.
For example, during the day you can listen to music loudly through acoustic speakers connected to the back of the case.
And in the evening, in order not to disturb anyone, use headphones, connecting them to the front panel and changing the settings in the dialog box that appears.
Also keep in mind that these options are only available if the slots on the front panel are connected to the corresponding connectors on the motherboard.
If the sockets are not connected, the OS will not receive a request, because even with the active AC’97 driver, it simply will not see either the port or the connected device.
Notebook
To connect speakers or headphones to a laptop or netbook, use the slot marked with a headphone icon. The port next to it, with the image of a microphone, is used to connect the corresponding device.
As a rule, portable PCs are not equipped with a line input.
Additional information
So, I think it’s quite clear which connector to insert the speaker or headphones into — salad or green.
The same applies to discrete sound cards — as a rule, fancy models have the same color coding.
Simpler devices connected via USB may have two ports labeled the same as the audio jacks on a laptop.
Separately, I want to note that the link button on the speakers, if any, is not connected with cables and sound transmission through them. It is usually used to pair a wireless speaker with a sound source. It may be called differently, so you should clarify this in the accompanying technical documentation.
And another moment. In some instances, the end of the line cable is soldered to the amplifier, and its end simply sticks out of the case. For other models, such a cable is composite and is connected to the amplifier using RCA connectors (tulips).
Just in case you are using a multi-channel audio system, they are labeled as follows:
- White — left;
- Red — right;
- Green — center;
- Blue — left in surround systems;
- Gray — they have the right one;
- Brown — left rear;
- Red — right rear;
- Magenta — sub or studio monitor.
For stereo systems with two channels, everything is much simpler: connect the red «tulip» to the red IN jack, and the white one, respectively, to the white one. The jacks marked OUT should be connected according to the colors to another speaker.
If everything is done correctly, after a couple of minutes you can piss off the neighbors with loud perky music.

Listening to all sounds in one channel
Windows
lets you convert stereo audio to one channel so you can hear everything even if you’re only using one earphone.
Select the Start button, then select Settings > Access > Sound and turn on the Mono sound switch.
Visualization of sound alerts
If you find it difficult to hear audio alerts, you can turn them on visually on your computer. Select the Start button and then Settings > Access > Sound .
In the Blink my screen during audio notifications area, select how you want the audio notifications to be displayed. Instead of relying solely on sound alerts, you can set your preferences to flash the active window, active window title, or full screen when you receive a notification.
Increase notification duration
By default, Windows notifications disappear five seconds after they appear. If you need more time to read them, you can increase the display time of notifications.
Select the Start button, and then select Settings > Access > Visual Effects . Then in area Reject notifications at and after this time, select the desired amount of time.
Signatures
Windows allows you to customize various options for closed captions, such as their color, size, and background. Select Start button and then Settings > access > subtitles . Then, in the Label Style area, select how labels should be displayed.
