Description

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword once again places the player in control of Link, a Hylian boy who this time around lives in the floating nation of Skyloft. Link is in love with a local girl called Zelda but one day while flying on their bird mounts, a tornado shows up out of nothing and takes Zelda away from Link. After that Link teams up with Fi, a spirit living within a sword and he descends to the long-forgotten surface to search for Zelda.

The game is structured very similar to previous Zelda games: you travel through an overworld in search of temples to visit and once in you solve a series of puzzles before fighting a boss at the end and receive the next bit of plot. The biggest change is that the overworld is more focused on puzzles this time around with only a handful of action. Also new is the implementation of the Wii Motion Plus which allows full 1:1 controls and new puzzle possibilities.

The 2021 Nintendo Switch HD version includes:

  • Enhanced Graphics and framerate
  • Improved Motion Controls and all-new Button and Stick Control Scheme
  • Free Camera Control at certain points of the game
  • An intuitive auto-save function, which let the player automatically save when passing an Owl Statue. Instead of manually stopping and saving
  • Streamlined opening tutorials and Item descriptions, as well as skippable cutscenes and dialogue (including Fi’s interaction with Link).
  • Amiibo support, using the new Loftwing amiibo to instantaneously transport Link to The Sky and The Surface and vice-versa.

Trivia

Game Breaking Glitch

When the player reaches the Song of the Hero quest, they will have to travel to Faron, Eldin and Lanayru, to collect the songs from each dragon. If the player speaks to Golo the Goron, obtains the Song of the Thunder Dragon, and then speaks to Golo the Goron again the events for collecting the songs in Faron and Eldin will no longer occur, meaning it is impossible for the player to continue further. This was patched in later releases in the game, and players who own the original release of the game were able to download a tool from the Wii Shop Channel that would correct the issue.

Music CD

Every copy in the initial production of the game comprised a special music CD with orchestral arrangements of select songs. These were also performed during the Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Symphony Concert, a series of concertos which took place in Tokyo, Los Angeles and London in October 2011 as a preview of the wider 2012 world tour, The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses.

Zelda: Skyward Sword HD on Switch has already outsold the Wii original

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD on Switch has already managed to outsell the original game on Wii, the latest data from Nintendo confirms.

Through the end of September, Skyward Sword HD sold 3.6 million copies. As for the Wii title, Nintendo had confirmed that it sold 3.52 million units.

Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is confirmed to have moved 420,000 units in Japan. The remaining 3.18 million copies comes from overseas regions.

Many games tend to flourish on Switch, so it’s not entirely surprising to see Skyward Sword HD doing so well. The series also managed to attract more fans in recent years thanks to Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is one of the best-selling games on Switch at over 24 million copies. You can see the current list of million sellers on Switch shared by Nintendo this week here.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword first came in November 2011. It’s worth noting that the Wii was very much on its last legs at that point, with Nintendo coming out with the Wii U a year later.

As for Skyward Sword HD, it only just launched this past July on Switch, so there’s plenty of room for additional sales in the future.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD, a new chance for a scandalous game

Zelda has always been popular in video games, but after Breath of The Wild was released with Nintend Switch got a lot of new fans. Of course, those who return to previous games will encounter games that are very different from the experience presented in 2017, but they are still the most iconic video game experiences — with the exception of the game released in 2011.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD is the second chance of this title, which is considered by many to be the black sheep of the series. Originally a Wii game, it’s now getting a second chance for the Nintendo Switch. Will reception change in 10 years? Check it out in our review .

10 years of motion control

Analog allows you to control the direction of the sword.

Skywood Sword originally came out in 2011, the last gasp of the Nintendo Wii. History says that the Nintendo console was very successful, but it forgets to mention that its popularity has plummeted in recent years, which is reflected in its successor, the Wii U. It definitely won’t define the future of video games as expected in 2010. Skywood Sword is from that time, and he was completely dependent on movement to function.

Link’s sword moved when the player moved the thoughtful Wii Remote , creating an immersive experience, but at the same time, it became tiring for a 40-hour game. In an attempt to address these issues, the game was also much more linear in terms of exploration than previous games in the franchise. It’s all to blame for the fact that the game after its launch was perceived extremely ambiguously. For me personally, the author turned out to be quite interesting. Not to mention my age, I was in my mid-teens, and in those moments when I wasn’t pretending to hate everything, I admired the fact that I could imitate sword movements from a controller.

Each enemy has its own tactics.

But 10 years later, now that the spine is no longer the pinnacle of the constitution, and now I really legitimately hate a lot of things, I can’t look at traffic control with the same happy, emotional gaze. How then does the port Switch behave for this?

Clearly, up , even in the combat mechanics against enemies, everything was designed for more control over Link’s sword than the occasional continuous button press to perform a combo. The development investment to complete this iteration will likely be close to the cost of a brand new game. Solution Skyword HD was to retain the ability to control motion, but also display them in such a way that they work on the analog Joy-Con Correctly.

So it’s possible to play without moving your arms, but it’s undeniable that it’s slightly less accurate than the current one if you’re using the Joy-Cons with movement. However, while contemplating this analog control inaccuracy in compiling this analysis, I did a little experiment: Years later, I turned on my Nintendo Wii and set my copy to Skywood Sword rotate to experience what the motion controls were like 10 years ago.

The conclusion was quite interesting: although they are good, they are still less accurate than their equivalent in the Switch version! What I noticed before testing the version 10 years ago became a reality thanks to the greater competence of the Joy-Cons as motion controls compared to the Wii Remote for. In the end, the game is very comfortable to play with analog sticks, and I even almost completely passed it with this type of control.

High resolution but little improvement

Comparison of Wii and Nintendo Switch versions.

Heavenly Sword HD is basically a re-release of visuals, but what’s most surprising is how overall it looks like the game just needed to be reprogrammed to run at a higher resolution than remodeling models. This is a great testament to the quality of the visual style chosen in the past.

The cuts of the sword, often reminiscent of Impressionist paintings, blend into Link’s green clothing, leaving spots that represent the intensity of the fight. In addition, the game, being the first Zelda game to feature an orchestral soundtrack, also makes incredible use of music and sound effects, and every attack Link lands on an enemy is presented with a fanfare that follows the rhythm of the attack, making it feel extremely satisfying in combat.

Some issues that caused the game to be criticized at the time have been fixed, such as the description of an item appearing every time you collect it, or the constant intervention of Fi, your assistant in the game, who always holds your hand to the player don’t get lost. Descriptions of items are only shown the first time they are picked up, and the vast majority of Fi dialogue is now optional.

On the other hand, problems that the vast majority expected to be resolved, as in the case of the last segment Windmill no reissue of 2013 was not touched.

Eldin Volcano is one of the most visited parts of the game.

Constantly revisiting areas without major changes, an extremely difficult journey to boost Link’s spirit where the player cannot take damage unless they have to start from scratch, and finally an extremely long journey through The music of the hero has not changed from the version 10 years ago.

Although Zelda games are usually long, about 40 hours, at the same time at up is tiring. Perhaps, of all the games in the series, this one is the most similar to artificial strength, and, frankly, this is very bad. Running out of the wonder of discovery for exhaustive exploration of the same areas without major innovation is one of the major possible sins in such a franchise;

However, this fatigue only appears after 25 hours of play. Before that, it conveys all the magic you’d expect, which put a smile on my face for most of my gameplay. Solve puzzles , clever use of a freer sword…excellent. Perhaps from the games I recently played, Heavenly Sword HD be the one that has the most value with two halves with such different qualities. It sucks, but at the same time it’s a great experience.

Skyward Verdict

Skywood Sword it has positives that, when present, make it arguably one of the best games in the franchise, but it also has negatives that, when they show up, turn it into a game that doesn’t even look like Zelda.
