Mods Made Obsolete by Unofficial Patches
Bug Fixes Recommended in Addition to the Unofficial Patch

Are you using Creation Club DLCs? If so, you need to get Garthand’s Unofficial Skyrim Creation Club Content Patches and install them alongside the USSEP. This will prevent errors induced by the CC DLCs making changes to the base game records that USSEP then overrides. Please refer all questions about these patches to Garthand on his threads. In addition to the unified patch linked to here he has several individual ones for them all which he has links to on his page.

DO NOT extract the contents of the BSA file into your Data folder as loose files, or let your mod manager perform an equivalent function on the contents of the file. Doing so will cause things to load in the wrong order and break the game. Skyrim is intended to load a BSA alongside it’s ESM/ESP file. Circumventing this causes issues which I will not provide support for. If you insist on going against this advice, you will receive no support for the problems you generate as a result of this.

Installation Requirements

Skyrim Special Edition 1.6.629 or greater from Steam, GoG, or the Epic Games Store.

After installing the mods, the following general load order needs to be followed:

Skyrim.esm
Update.esm
Dawnguard.esm
Hearthfires.esm
Dragonborn.esm
ccBGSSSE001-Fish.esm
ccQDRSSE001-SurvivalMode.esl
ccBGSSSE037-Curios.esl
ccBGSSSE025-AdvDSGS.esm
[any Creation Club master-flagged ESLs you may have]
Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch.esp
[The rest of your mods]

For getting load order set with other mods loaded, please use LOOT. It will provide you a solid starting point for everything that you can then tweak as needed.

Errors During NMM Installation

If you get the following error:

BOSS_API_ERROR_INVALID_ARGS: Master files must load before other plugins. The mod was not installed.

You need to perform the following steps:

— Uninstall and delete all the Unofficial patches in NMM.
— Exit NMM.
— Launch NMM again.
— Download and install all of the updated Unofficial Patches.
— Run LOOT to sort your load order.

Cannot Absorb Dragon Souls

Make sure your load order is right!

Loose Scripts in Data/Scripts

Check for: dragonactorscript.pex and/or mqkilldragonscript.pex. Remove them if present. They are from dragon mods that came as loose files.

DSAMG — Dragon Soul Absorb More Glorious, and Diversified Dragons are known to cause this. Those mods need to be updated with a Dragonborn patch that incorporates the fixes from USSEP.

Others may be a factor as well.

Note too that the offending mod may have the script packaged inside a BSA. That will need to be handled by that mod’s author.

Skyrim Anniversary Edition: what does it actually include?

So what is Skyrim Anniversary Edition? Well, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s an elaborate self-parody by Bethesda about its habit of re-releasing The Elder Scrolls V. Instead, it’s a new version of the long-running and ever-popular open world RPG from 2011 that Bethesda launched for the game’s tenth anniversary. In Bethesda’s words, Skyrim Anniversary Edition is «the most definitive version of Skyrim to date,» which I suppose leaves us open to the very real possibility of a Skyrim Extra Special 15-Year Barrel Aged Edition five years from now.  By then, arrow-in-the-knee references might even be funny again.

In any event, since the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition in November of 2021, fans old and new have been enjoying the most complete offering of Dragonborn adventures to date. Given the number of Skyrim versions that have already been released over the years, you’ll want to know exactly what this one includes to decide whether it’s an upgrade worth buying.

When is the Skyrim Anniversary Edition release date?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition launched November 11, 2021. That’s ten years to the day since the original game came out, if you don’t remember the clever «11/11/11» marketing from back then. If you already own Skyrim Special Edition from 2016, Skyrim AE is available as a DLC for your current game, rather than an entirely new game in your library.

What is the Skyrim Anniversary Edition price?

The Skyrim Anniversary Edition costs $49. 99 USD/ $79.95 / €54.99/ £47.99 if you are buying it on its own. Scroll down a bit to find out what’s actually included in Skyrim AE. If you already own Skyrim Special Edition, you can upgrade to Skyrim AE for $19.99 USD / $29.95 AUD / €19.99 / £15.99.

Skyrim Anniversary Edition is not included in Xbox Game Pass. Skyrim Special Edition is, though, so Gamepass subscribers can grab Skyrim AE for the upgrade price and also get a 10% discount on that price in the Xbox Store .

But what is the Skyrim Anniversary Edition?

Bethesda is calling the Anniversary Edition «the most definitive version of Skyrim to date.» That’s not the most concrete explanation, so it might help to think of Skyrim Anniversary as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition — Definitive Edition. That definitely clears things up, right?

Okay, Skyrim AE is a bit like a Game Of The Year release for Skyrim Special Edition. It includes Skyrim SE and also bundles in all of the previously released premium Creation Club additions. In practice, Skyrim Anniversary Edition is a DLC for Skyrim Special Edition, launching alongside a free game update for Skyrim SE.

What’s included in the Skyrim Anniversary Edition?

If you buy Skyrim Anniversary Edition outright, what you’ll be downloading is Skyrim Special Edition and a DLC package. Here’s the Skyrim Anniversary Edition content:

  • Skyrim Special Edition
  • Skyrim’s original DLCs: Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn
  • Next-gen improvements for Skyrim SE
  • All 48 previously released Creation Club items
  • 26 new Creation Club items

If you’d forgotten about Bethesda’s Creation Club, it’s a marketplace of paid DLCs developed either internally by Bethesda or by approved external creators. The 48 current Creation Club items that you’ll get access to as part of Skyrim AE range from special weapons, to new enemy types, quest expansions, and gameplay changes.

Some of the new Creation Club items that arrived alongside Skyrim SE include Morrowind-inspired weapons and armor and a quest expansion called The Cause. In total, Bethesda says that the 74 Creation Club items included with Skyrim AE represent over 500 new gameplay elements.

Players who don’t upgrade to Skyrim AE also got four of those Creation Club items free on AE’s launch day: the Saints and Seducers quest expansion, Rare Curious expansion, Survival Mode, and the Fishing skill and quests.

If you’re just installing the free game update to Skyrim SE, you’ll find that the free Creation Club items have all been downloaded for you. When upgrading with the Skyrim AE DLC, you’ll need to head into the Creation Club section of the main menu and manually choose which pieces you want to install.

What if you already own Skyrim Special Edition?

So what happens if you already own Skyrim SE? Bethesda says that current owners and Xbox Game Pass subscribers have the option to upgrade to Skyrim AE for $19.99 USD / $29.95 AUD / €19.99 / £15.99.

Even if you don’t buy the Anniversary Edition of the game, those four free Creation Club items have been added to your game for free.

Will the Anniversary Edition mess up your mods?

As of today, upgrading to Skyrim AE should not majorly affect your mods at all. In fact, it will give a visual update and add in a playlist of mods.

On launch, Skyrim SE modders needed time to catch up to the new code, so mod updates were a bit scattered. Over a year later, all major mods have adapted to AE, and should be working smoothly.

After originally preparing for the worst, the developer of Skyrim Script Extender was given early access to Skyrim AE to work on updating SKSE. At the time of writing, the latest SKSE is available on their website, and it is up an running with multiple stable patches for Skyrim AE.

There’s also a Skyrim Special Edition rollback mod that downgrades your game to a version prior to the Anniversary Edition update to help keep compatibility with your current modded setup.

Special Edition? — Games on DTF

On November 11, Skyrim’s 10th Anniversary Edition will be released. In honor of the holiday, all owners of the Special Edition will receive a free update, which will bring not only 4 free mods, but also big problems for most of the projects using SKSE.

tl;dr Set «Update» in Steam to «Update at startup» and launch the game via mod manager or skse directly.

With the release of the Anniversary Edition, all SE owners will receive 4 free Creation Club mods — a new storyline from Saints and Seducers, merchandise from around Tamriel as part of Amusing Rarities, survival mode and fishing.

The update will change the game and break the script extender. The reason is quite simple, Bethesda is now using Visual Studio 2019for the compiler, not Visual Studio 2015 as it was before.

How do you save your game?

The first thing to do is to back up the game files. For security purposes, it is better to copy:

  • SkyrimSE.exe
  • Data / Skyrim. esm
  • Data/Update.esm
  • Data / Skyrim — Interface.bsa
  • Data / Skyrim — Misc.bsa
  • Data / Skyrim — Patch.bsa

How to stay on the old version of the game and not lose compatibility with SKSE?

This applies only to the Steam version of the game. On other platforms, the game version will be updated automatically. Please note that by staying on SkyrimSE.exe 1.5.97 or downgrading, you will not receive free updates and mini-DLC.

This option is only for people who want to keep SKSE compatible for a while until the SKSE development team updates the script extender.

The simplest solution is to block automatic game updates by setting the game to update only on startup:

  • Go to your Steam Library;
  • Right-click Skyrim Special Edition and select «Properties. ..»;
  • Select «Updates» from the menu on the left
  • In the Automatic Updates section, select the Update only before startup option.

Once this is done, make sure you only launch Skyrim SE through your mod manager or through the SKSE loader — «skse64_loader.exe».

When you launch the game via mod manager or skse, make sure Steam is already running. If this is not the case, launching a third-party program will launch Steam, which will then launch the game, that is, update it.

This way your game will not be updated automatically. If you still want to update the game, simply launch the game through Steam to start the update process.

Return to the previous version of the game

If for some reason the game has been updated or you just want to revert to Skyrim 1.5.97 (this is the latest version of the game at the moment) but you haven’t made a backup, then you can download an older version of the game from Steam using the console :

  • Press the Windows key + R
  • Type » steam://open/console » (without quotes) in the input field and press Enter
  • Steam will now open and you should see a console tab to the right of your nickname.
  • Go to Steam console and type » download_depot 489830 489833 2289561010626853674 » without quotes and press Enter
  • This will download SkyrimSE.exe version 1.5.97 to the folder indicated in the download completion message
  • Go to this folder and copy this SkyrimSE.exe, replacing the one in the game folder.
  • Make sure your game is now only updated on startup as described above.

And that’s it, so you stay on the current version of the game.

The methods are certainly not the most convenient, but you will be able to save your modifications, and your gameplay will not be broken. In case you’re wondering which mods work on AE and which don’t, Nexusmods has already prepared a list of popular SKSE plugins and a compatibility table that will be updated over time.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition will release on November 11, 2021 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S|X.

In the meantime, I run a tg channel about Bethesda Softworks and Elder Scrolls in particular, posting memes and news from global fan projects. Drop by.

Skyrim Special Edition update fixes 11 year old bug

Recently, Bethesda released a new update for Skyrim Special Edition, which fixed a number of old bugs and added a new item to the game menu.

The official changelog is rather concise — update 1.6.629 adds a new item to the menu, fixes bugs for the Japanese and Chinese regions, and also changes the label for Creation Club mods.

Official changelog

However, there are actually many more changes. A reddit user made a full analysis of the update, from the most interesting:

  • Fixed a bug with mannequins — now they do not move:
    • «Immobile» flag added
    • flags removed: Swims, Walks, No Combat in Water, Uses Head Track Anims
  • Added in-game description for DLC and Creation Club content
  • Fixed the weight of arrows and bolts, now it is 0.
