Skyrim Together Reborn is a mod designed for groups of two-to-eight players, though the creators have tested it with over 30, essentially making a mini-MMO. The aim is for friends to be able to play Skyrim co-operatively, complete with shared quest progress. Since its release on NexusMods yesterday, Skyrim Together Reborn has already been downloaded over 56,800 times. For comparison’s sake, the second-most popular new mod added to Nexus is a sexy nun outfit from June, which has 30,000 downloads.

As well as the installation video above, mod developers The Together Team have put together both a guide to getting started and a playguide , both of which they describe as essential reading. You’ll need to be playing Skyrim Special Edition version 1.6 on Steam, ideally without any other mods installed barring the address library for SKSE plugins , and should get a new character to the end of the Helgen tutorial quest before trying to connect to a server.

Skyrim Together Reborn doesn’t support Skyrim VR, or any version of Skyrim prior to the Special Edition’s 1.6 update. You don’t need to own the Anniversary Edition add-on, however, and if you do The Together Team recommend disabling its additions.

It seems to be working for most players, with a few expected bugs and omissions. Weather and patrols aren’t synced, which means the vampires added by Dawnguard won’t appear for everyone, some players are seeing items and characters sliding along the ground , and enemies are intermittently causing more damage than normal. There has also been some random nudity , with one player reporting, «Played it last night with a buddy, played wonderfully except near the end of hour 2 we both became naked to each other». Apparently removing and then re-equipping armor should fix that one.

Adventurous players have begun testing mod compatibility, and finding some favorites work with minor issues. As one player wrote, «We even had some visual mods and skse64 with skyUi running and the only two real issues were the inconsistent damage and that enemies sometimes stayed alive for one of the other [after] a finishing move. But that was solved by a no killcam mod and we are having a blast with questing.»

Skyrim Together Reborn is open-source, and while The Together Team plan to maintain it, their hope is that «new developers come in to help this mod reach new heights. There is still lots of work that can be done, like building a scripting API, implementing features like weather sync, doing additional bug and crash fixes, making quests smoother, or finishing Fallout Together.»

One mod, Skyrim Together, has figured out a way to incorporate multiplayer gameplay into Skyrim: Special Edition. It has a few bugs and is far from polished, but it is remarkably far along. There is also a way to get this mod to support split-screen co-op for fans that don’t want to deal with latency. Here is a quick guide on how to play Skyrim cooperatively through the use of mods.

Updated May 13th, 2021 by Charles Burgar: Skyrim Together hasn’t changed much since we first wrote this article, but overall interest in the mod sure has spiked. Many Skyrim fans have taken to installing this incredibly ambitious mod to dungeon delve with their friends, providing a co-op experience that’s hard to match. To help players decide if this mod is right for them, we’ve added an FAQ section to the guide that answers some basic questions players have about this mod.

Who Can Play Skyrim Co-op?

Currently, only PC users with Skyrim: Special Edition can play Skyrim cooperatively. Owners of the 2011 version of Skyrim also can’t play co-op; it must be the Special Edition.

How Does Skyrim Co-op Work?

Skyrim does not have any co-op or multiplayer functionality by itself. Thanks to mods, this is now possible. The Skyrim Together mod allows multiple players to connect to a single instance through a server browser. Clients can host a local server that other Skyrim Together users can join. Passwords can be set to only allow friends into your game. A maximum of eight players can be in a lobby at a given time.

Since this mod is a work in progress, expect a few bugs and missing features. Most actions and items are synchronized, excluding leveled loot from chests, opening claw doors in dungeons, quest objectives (players need to progress each quest exactly the same to prevent bugs), and certain character-altering effects like Wabbajack don’t work.

If you are interested in playing split-screen co-op to remove latency concerns, you can use Skyrim Together in conjunction with the Nucleus Co-op Mod. This mod adds split-screen co-op for compatible games, Skyrim Together being a recent addition. With both mods installed, two instances of Skyrim should start. Have both instances join each other with different save files via Skyrim Together’s server browser. Click here for Skyrim Together’s guide on how to do this.

How To Install And Play Skyrim Together

You’ll only need one mod to play Skyrim cooperatively, although there are a few optional downloads you’ll want to consider:

  1. Harbor Launcher (Skyrim Together Mod): Adds online functionality to Skyrim. Download the latest version.
  2. (OPTIONAL) Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE): Any script extender mods will need SKSE to work with Skyrim Together. It is not required.
    1. As reported by u/_Neusor_ on Reddit, you’ll want version «skse64_2_00_19» for SKSE mods to work alongside this mod.
  3. (OPTIONAL) Nucleus Co-op launcher: Allows Skyrim Together to utilize split-screen. This requires a good computer, as you’ll be running two instances of Skyrim simultaneously.
    1. Nucleus is not required for Skyrim Together to work. This launcher adds split-screen functionality to the mod, nothing more. Nucleus is not affiliated with the Skyrim Together project in any way.

Install the Harbor Launcher first. When the application asks for an install directory, choose wherever is most comfortable to you; it doesn’t have to be where Skyrim’s installed. When finished, boot up the Harbor launcher. It will need to detect your game. To do so, click the magnifying glass icon to the left of the «Install» button to manually search for your SkyrimSE. exe file. Once selected, Harbor will install Skyrim Forever for you.

Tip: If you have no idea where Skyrim is installed, head to Skyrim: Special Edition in your Steam library. Right-click on it, hover over «manage,» then click on «browse local files.» You’ll be taken to your Skyrim install directory.

In-game, choose a save file that is not in the Helgen tutorial. Press right control to bring up the server menu. You can connect to a friend’s server directly by using their IP address or by searching for their server name. To host a server, find your root Skyrim directory, look for the «server» folder, then launch the server.exe file.

Note: If the executable states that libcrypto-1_1-x64.dll is missing, you can find it here. Drop that file in your «server» folder. Downloading an older version of the Harbor launcher can also work.

Using Nucleus To Add Split-Screen Co-op

Following the above steps is needed for Nucleus to work. As with the Harbor launcher, Nucleus can be placed anywhere on your computer. Install it, then boot the launcher up.

Note: If any antivirus software detects the .rar as malicious software, disable the warning and install Nucleus. One of the developers, ZeroFoxG, explains why this problem occurs. The program is not a virus.

It will need to find your Skyrim executable. If you get error messages, you must have at least two character save files past Helgen and a «logs» file inside your «server» file for Nucleus to find Skyrim. Once it detects your game, launch Skyrim from the Nucleus launcher to start two instances of the same game in split-screen. Have both instances load into the same server (you can join by using your local IP or by typing «127. 0.0.1″ in the IP field).

Skyrim Together FAQ

The Skyrim Together developers have an excellent FAQ document that answers most questions players have with this mod. We’ll be giving a cliff notes version of this FAQ for players curious about installing this mod. If you’ve already installed the mod, we highly recommend you read the developer FAQ instead.

Can I Play Skyrim Co-op With The 2011 Version?

No. Only a legal copy of Skyrim: Special Edition will work.

Does This Mod Work On Console?

No.

Can You Mod Skyrim Together?

Yes, although beware that this mod can have serious compatibility issues with certain mods.

In general, mods that swap out textures or general graphics mods won’t have any major compatibility issues. However, there are a few mods that don’t play as nicely with Skyrim Together:

  • SKSE dependant mods (Papyrus script mods are fine)
  • Injectors and external programs (ENBs, ReShades)

If the mod was created using the Creation Kit, there’s a good chance it’ll work seamlessly in Skyrim Together. If that mod relies on SKSE or external programs, there will be issues.

Does Everyone Need The Same Mods On A Server?

Not quite. Mods that don’t rely on external scripts will work just fine, even if other players on the server aren’t using them. For example, if you installed Beyond Skyrim: Bruma and are wearing an armor set from that mod, other players that don’t have that mod installed can still play with you; your character will just be naked to them. The same is true for graphics mods that don’t rely on scripts.

Related: Hidden Secrets You Still Haven’t Found In Skyrim

However, if you have a mod that relies on SKSE scripts, those mods won’t synchronize at all. For example, the Campfire mod will only create a campfire for yourself that only you can see, even if everyone on the server has that mod installed. As the developers put it, «What cannot be found, will not exist.»

On that note, load order doesn’t matter in Skyrim Together. The mod will automatically synchronize load orders when a player joins the game.

What’s Synchronized Between Players?

Not everything is synchronized, but a surprising amount of Skyrim is synchronized between players.

Synchronized:

  • Character appearances and apparel (excluding vertex edits or SKSE custom races)
  • Static containers
  • World state (doors, levers, non-claw door puzzles, etc.)
  • Attacks, spells, and Shouts
  • Faction reputation
  • Player inventories (allows you to pickpocket other players)
  • Time of day and weather (if you slow time, only you are affected; if you’re the host, NPCs are affected as well)
  • Character transformations (vampire and werewolf)

Not Synchronized:

  • Quests (all players must be on the exact same step and not deviate from the same path)
  • Dialogue
  • Objects (dropping items is disabled entirely)
  • Loot chests and containers

Because of the state of Skyrim Together’s synchronization, it’s recommended you focus more on dungeon delving in this mod instead of completing quests.

More fun together.

In the 10 years since the release of Skyrim, fans have come up with many mods that significantly improve the game from Bethesda. Among them, there was even a mod for a joint game over the network — Skyrim Together. It allows you to play with 2-8 friends on a selected or created server.

What are the features of playing Skyrim online?

  • The appearance of players, their equipment, abilities and more are synchronized. Moreover, Creation Club mods are supported for all players, and mods using SKSE will only be seen by their owner.
  • You can fight with players on the server without declaring a battle and without special arenas — all players are considered NPCs, so you can attack at any time.
  • Difficulty level is set differently for different players, i.e. if you play on legendary, enemies will be legendary, while your friend playing on low difficulty will have easier opponents.
  • No deaths — if your character’s health reaches zero, you will have to wait on your knees while another player heals you.
  • Even thefts are supported! But if you are noticed, then you will not be able to re-steal from this player, as in the game.
  • Support for vampirism and lycanthropy in multiplayer — you will suffer from sunlight and other players will notice it.

What are the disadvantages of Skyrim Together?

7 crazy mods that will break your Skyrim, but you won’t regret it

  • No combined quests. Everything that happens in your quest game will be inaccessible to the other player. The same goes for puzzles, dragon-clawed doors, and other interactive elements that require the player’s intervention. Therefore, it is better to agree on the passage of quests in advance or start a new game together.
  • No loot sync. This is partly due to the difficulty and different levels of the character. What your friend drops will not appear in your inventory, and vice versa.
  • No pause. The time is shared by all players.
  • There are no icons of other players on the map. It may not be the most important feature, but many online games have it. But there is a people counter on the server.
  • Player movements are out of sync. It all depends on your internet connection and ping, just like your friends.

How to install the mod and play online?

The mod supports Skyrim Special Edition on PC. There will never be this mod on consoles, because for this you will need to get into the source code of the game, which is not available to modders. For a comfortable session, it is better for you and your friends to install the same versions of the game, and not pirated ones. To find out which version of the game you have, check the title in the Steam Library.

  • First you need to download the mod launcher installer called Harbor from github.
  • Harbor needs to be installed in the game folder. To check where your game is installed, right-click on the game in the Steam Library, select Manage, then Browse Local Files. If Harbor doesn’t find the game itself, you can click on the magnifying glass button and navigate to the game yourself.
  • Disable Steam Cloud Saves so you and your friends don’t have bugs. This can be done by right-clicking on the game in the library and selecting the «Properties» option. On the first screen «General» there will be a third item about turning Steam Cloud on or off.
  • Run Harbor as an administrator (preferably always run it this way) and press the Play button.
  • Click the Connect button and select a server from the Public Servers list. After completing the prologue, you will enter the world with other players.

Nextgen graphics in Skyrim? Easily! You only need mods

You can also create your own server to play with your friends. To do this, you need to register on the Play Together website, log in using the Play Together bot and get the server IP address, which looks something like this: fr.playtogether.gg:10002. After that, in the game you need to press Ctrl, then the Connect button, enter the server IP address and the password that you specified during registration. But the server will not live forever — it turns off after 10 minutes of inactivity, and only a game with two or more people is considered an active session.

How do I resolve the «Requested operation requires elevation» error?

To solve it, just restart the program as an administrator and try to run it like that always. To do this, right-click on the program’s shortcut and select «Run as administrator».

libcrypto-1_1-x64 file is missing — what to do?

Some antiviruses consider the file «libcrypto-1_1-x64.dll» to be potentially dangerous. To avoid this, return the file from the quarantine of your antivirus or download the program again, and then be sure to disable the antivirus before starting the game.

Although Skyrim itself is a fantastic experience, it is designed to complement this experience with a delightful cooperative adventure

2021 marks the tenth anniversary of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, one of the most popular games of all time. The game is still being released on new platforms, and to this day, and right now, thousands of people are exploring the epic open world of Bethesda’s masterpiece. However, the original Skyrim did not allow you to play with friends. Skyrim Together is a mod that has been in development since 2018 that allows you to share your playthrough with friends. Its creators strive to stay true to the original style of Skyrim, not the style of the MMO The Elder Scrolls Online. Here are all the details you need to know about the current build of Skyrim Together.

10. Only works with Special Edition

Bad news for console players. While mods are now available on Xbox and PlayStation, Skyrim Together is not one of them. The creators are also forced to drop support for older versions of the game, so you won’t be able to mod the original or legendary version on Steam. Special Edition only. The good news is that whether you have the add-ons or not, the mod works equally well in both cases. Please note Skyrim Together does not support VR and pirated copies of .

9. Development is not complete, but the latest version is already available for download. However, the creators of

have made the latest version of the mod known as Nightly Builds available for download. This is essentially an extended phase of QR testing, and the creators are asking players to report bugs on their GitHub. It is currently impossible to estimate the likelihood of a full release, but updates appear regularly.

8. One player provides server

All servers are currently hosted by the community, with no restrictions. Each server can host up to 64 players, although testing from only recommends two to eight .

In addition, it is possible to play on a local network, as well as using VPNs such as Hamachi. All players will need to complete the game’s intro in order to join the server. However, you can also use the Alternate Start mod, which allows you to skip the initial quest and significantly diversify the beginning of the game.

7. PvP enabled

The creators of have enabled PvP by default so if players get tired of cooperating they can fight and kill each other instead. Other players essentially act as NPCs, which prevents fast travel if the AI thinks you’re hostile to each other. This also means that players can detect each other, so if a standing player is looking at a crouching player, they will become visible to other NPCs.

6. Quests are currently out of sync

In general, the quests in Skyrim Together are pretty good. Single player progress is not synced, which means that one player’s quest events will not count towards another player’s. To complete a task together, all players must take this task at the same time and complete it together. They also need to make sure that they make the same decisions throughout the quest, otherwise there may be conflicts in the game. And, although it is theoretically possible to complete tasks, there are so many errors associated with this that the creators advise not to go through joint quests yet.

5. Time is synchronized

This means that time is running at a normal pace and cannot be paused or accelerated. So if the player pauses, the game time keeps going . Conversely, if you sleep or wait, it will take exactly as much game time as it took in reality.

Fast travel is also instant, regardless of travel time, and can only be used by the player who created the server (using the console command, he can also teleport other players to himself). Slow effects (such as the Slow Time shout) will only affect NPCs, not other players.

4. Chests, locks and doors are synchronized (almost all)

All locked chests are simultaneously locked for all players. If someone opens this chest, it will become opened simultaneously for all players. Currently this sync only works for static containers, so NPCs that move don’t count. Puzzle solving is also synced, with the exception of doors that require key claws, as they work differently in the base code.

3. Spells, shouts and dragon souls

Spells and shouts are synced , and when PvP is enabled, you can throw fireballs at other players or yell to knock them off cliffs. Most spell effects (freeze, fire, etc.) work as expected. The exception is transformative spells and effects (such as those from Wabbajack), which do not work. Also all players remain Dragonborn , and so everyone earns dragon souls at the same time. However, experience is not shared.

2. Compatibility with some other mods (but this is inaccurate)

Many mods are compatible, but probably not all. The creators of recommend keeping the builds of all Skyrim Together players identical. Particular attention should be paid to all mods that add new items and equipment so that they are correctly displayed for all players.

Mods made with the Skyrim Creation Kit generally work well, while mods made with SKSE can cause sync issues, although this varies by mod.
