Shadow of the Colossus is a console video game in the genre of action adventure, which was developed back in 2005 specifically for PS2 consoles. A fairly large popularity of the project and its interesting gameplay even by modern standards led to the fact that the developers released a remastered version for PS4 consoles.
The changes in the reissue affected not only the graphics, which came closer to modern action games – the gameplay was also somewhat redesigned, especially the control system, which became more convenient.
A team called Team Ico worked on the creation of the project.
Plot
Similar to the video game series Dark Souls, here the storyline and actions, as well as the motives of the characters remain unknown. Only part of their intentions and part of the history of the virtual world can be understood based on a few dialogues and hints.
The events unfold in some forbidden lands, and the main character becomes a warrior named Vander. Not so long ago, his beloved was sacrificed, and he is trying to find a way to bring her back from the world of the dead. To do this, the warrior must destroy all the colossi – powerful huge bosses who live in the forbidden lands.
Gameplay
Shadow of the Colossus is a unique action game with very interesting mechanics of opposing giants. Battles with them deserve special attention of gamers – the study of this aspect has led to the great popularity of the action movie.
Among the key gameplay features , it is necessary to highlight:
- open virtual world;
- colorfully staged battle scenes against giants – they are so huge that you can climb them to find vulnerabilities and win;
- the variety of bosses is huge – from flying creatures, to land and those who live underwater;
- limited arsenal – a full set of weapons can be obtained only after a complete passage;
- the death of the hero means the end of the game – everything will have to start

One thing can be said right away — this is one of the highest quality game remakes in the history of the industry, and, at the moment, one of the most beautiful games of the generation. The Bluepoint team, which released the HD version of Colossus on PS3 and a number of high-profile re-releases, in this case from scratch, literally manually recreated every element of the game, drawing everything from scratch. Every blade of grass, stone, leaf was created, not remade. Character animations have been completely rewritten based on existing assets from PS2. Volumetric lighting with HDR, a new foliage system, weather conditions, a volumetric sky with elaborate clouds through which the sun’s rays barely penetrate — everything is done with a fanatical love for the original. And, which is very nice, each change works on the atmosphere of the game, not destroying what it was 12 years ago, but, on the contrary, even more involving the player in this measured, but very restless and disturbing world.

The gameplay and narrative of the game have not changed in any way — this is a parable about saving the girl Mono, who the main character, Wander, desperately wants to bring back to life. To find each colossus, the hero is given a laconic poetic clue that the player needs to decipher. Actually, everything. Wander travels around the world on Agro’s horse, using the sword to determine the location of the Colossus by the reflected sunbeams, kills him and … you will see for yourself. To kill the Colossus, Vander must plunge his sword into the indicated «marks» on the body (there are no more than 3 of them on the easy difficulty level). And most of them are, of course, as high as possible and inaccessible to the player. You need to climb the colossi on the fur, on the ledges, “hook” them and bring them down to the ground, get there using the features of the landscape.
And how incredible each fight looks!
The giants are amazingly animated, the naughty camera at the moments of the horse race becomes perfect, the game neatly obscures and blurs unnecessary views, concentrating on the duel between a man and a huge colossus. Climbing Wander is constantly trying to throw off, trample, drown — the animations are selected very vividly and naturally, which makes the battle as exciting and fascinating as possible. Next to the Colossi, the player is a small and stupid insect, and at first one feels sincere helplessness in front of them. It is worth noting that on the PlayStation 4 Pro the game works in two modes: «quality», with 1440p and 30 FPS, and «performance», with 1080p and 60FPS. Interestingly, at 60 FPS the game becomes easier — the movements of the Colossus are smoother, more accurate, it is easier to adapt and concentrate on them. And at the same time, the fights are more cinematic — the greatness of the Colossus becomes maximum.

And with them: for example, the camera sometimes doing strange things, the lack of sane markers and tips, minimal training, the complex control of «climbing» need to get used to. And it’s absolutely worth it — just get to the first Colossus and see it with your own eyes. For PlayStation veterans, it’s easier than ever — this is a stunning remake of what is arguably one of their favorite games on the platform.
