Summary: While the simplistic gameplay, and the endless hordes of enemies might be exhausting and even repetitive to some, the Serious Sam Collection is still a well-functioning blast to playthrough and a must-have, especially for fans of the genre.

Seriously Sam

The Serious Sam series takes players back to the days of never-ending Doom clones filled with lots of guns, and hordes of tedious enemies. While Doom made its bombastic return earlier this year, there’s no doubt there’s a certain type of charm to these classic shooters. After the latest entry into the Serious Sam series Serious Sam 4, which was also released earlier this year, developer Croteam has graciously provided current-gen players access to the older titles in the series via the Serious Sam Collection.

This collection specifically includes Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter, Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter, its Legend of the Beast expansion, and Serious Sam 3: BFE.  While the second title is noticeably missing from the collection, perhaps due to its unfavorable reputation, the bundle still provides players with an incredibly fun and charming blast from the past.

The series follows Sam “Serious” Stone, the gruff and macho hero of earth, and his efforts to stop Mental’s world domination plans by shooting, cutting, and blasting his way through his vast army of monsters. As most can guess, while playing any classic Doom type game, the story isn’t the main appeal nor is it the focus, as that is mainly on the combat. At the start of each game, the player starts off with a simple pistol but slowly and surely work their way to acquire a mobile armory to match the continuously expanding line up of enemies.

Another aspect of these type of games is how swift and precise gameplay is with no shortage of enemies to blast through. Thankfully the same holds true for the Serious Sam series as gameplay is incredibly swift, weighty, and satisfying. What the games lack in visual appeal, it more than makes up for with functionality. Players should be ready to face huge amounts of enemy hordes at a time, which can get quite daunting if one does not pace themselves. However, learning the enemy’s patterns and using tactics such as the strafing move in the game will help in securing a satisfying victory.

It’s also worthy to note that both Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter and Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter are remastered versions of their original counterpart, so the visuals have been touched up to stay modern while still keeping their drab aesthetic. However, while these games show their age in some parts, they still managed to impress me with their incredible level design, with each stage looking vastly different from the next.

Both games also notably function quite similarly, like two parts of a full game. However, The Second Encounter is noticeably better looking and sports an updated UI, that’s much more pleasing to look at. A noticeable disadvantage with these two games is that players cannot run, (although Sam moves pretty quickly) nor can they hold down the sight of their guns, which can be especially jarring to those who previously only played modern shooters.

However, this changes with the inclusion of Serious Sam 3: BFE, the most modern title in the collection, which includes updated visuals, a cohesive story, and more linear levels. Serious Sam 3 also allows players to perform outrageous finisher combos, as well as sprint and aim down sights but at the price of moving slower. The collection also comes included with various co-op modes that potentially provides hours of fun for players and their friends, whether online or on the couch.

Final Thoughts?

All in all, the Serious Sam Collection is a brilliant bundle of nostalgic fun. While the simplistic gameplay, and the endless hordes of enemies might be exhausting and even repetitive to some, it is still a well-functioning blast to playthrough and a must-have, especially for fans of the genre.

Remaster of the first parts of Serious Sam as a therapeutic timekiller | Games and the future on 2×2

At the end of November, Serious Sam Collection was released on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. This is a bunch of games at once:

  • Serious Sam HD: First Coming
  • Serious Sam HD: Second Coming
  • Serious Sam 3 BFE
  • Legend of the Beast DLC
  • And one more Jewel DLC Nile»

Of course, we are not talking about a full-fledged remake. This is rather a tribute to those very nostalgic flashbacks from the early 2000s with improved graphics, reworked textures and increased FPS. And if the fourth part of Serious Sam, which was released in September 2020, could not entice you and shed a tear for the lost youth (many critics and gamers did not really go to the return of the series), then you will definitely like the remaster of the first parts.

From the indie publisher Devolver Digital, which now owns the rights to the entire franchise, our digital producer Lyosha Abanin got a set for the Nintendo Switch, and it seems that you need to smash the headless creatures to pieces on the switch. But first things first!

At first it seemed that the game came out at the wrong time (at least for me). The end of November-beginning of December of each year is a traditional total working hell on all fronts due to the fact that everyone wants to complete the tasks planned for the previous 11 months, and we also had the launch of 2×2.media on the nose. So every time I picked up tough Sam and saw a headless kamikaze running and screaming, I just constantly repeated in my head: “I understand you, bro.” This brings to mind my recent article for the release of the fourth part that screaming guys without a head is the perfect description of the average millennial.

And so I played at this pace for several days in a row: I sat in front of the computer, worked, and in moments of wild despair and fatigue (about once an hour) I grabbed my switch, killed everyone in a row for ten minutes and went on to work. At first, I was mad that I couldn’t check out the game properly, but then it dawned on me that this is exactly the format for consuming Serious Sam games is now ideal.

That is, if you perceive the game Serious Sam (it does not matter which part at all) as a time killer for calming and distracting, then it will perform this function 100%. And that’s exactly why it will be most convenient to play on the switch — you just need to put it next to your working computer and always keep it charged.

Screenshot from Serious Sam HD: «First Coming»

Moreover, this format of consumption can be divided into several parts depending on the mood and desire to kill everyone around, not only in the game, but also in real life:

— Launch «First Coming» and immediately set the highest level of difficulty, or at least «Master». Such a tough mess will not drag you into the game for more than 10 minutes — just perfect to break away from work for a while and exhale. That is, everything is so tough there that you start to get mad at the game, throw the switch on the sofa and go to work out of anger. But you no longer hate work, but a regiment of thousands of vicious frogs that eat up all your health in a matter of seconds.

— Run The Second Coming, but with an easy difficulty level, just to have fun shooting mutants, not really thinking about the amount of armor and permanent saving. This game will help relieve stress and exhale. It also works great.

But it’s better not to run the third part (on a switch) — it is very poorly adapted, and there are big problems with performance (FPS sometimes sags to zero in large spaces and among hordes of enemies).

In addition to all the single player campaigns, the set also includes a multiplayer game (both local and online), which increases the fun by about 16 times (if you create a game for 16 people). So if you do not live/work at home alone, then therapeutic relaxation can be done together with neighbors (well, or with unknown guys from the Internet).

By the way, the controls specifically for a portable console are quite convenient, despite the fact that the sticks on the switch are not the most convenient. But I highly recommend turning on the auto-aim function in the settings, otherwise you will not succeed at all. It sounds like some kind of cheating, but believe me, it will be better, more comfortable and more fun.
