Sennheiser is no stranger to offering high-end audio to high-end customers, and the company’s PC 373D gaming headset is no exception. This premium peripheral offers excellent 7. 1 surround sound and a supercrisp microphone, all within a lightweight and stylish design that’s a joy to wear for hours on end. It’s even got a nifty companion app that lets you change settings on the fly without sifting through tiresome menus.

While some of the 373D’s competitors — even wireless ones — offer similar features for less money, the headset’s wonderfully immersive sound and all-day comfort may make it worth the premium for you.

Simple but stylish

The black-and-red Sennheiser 373D skirts the line between simple and stylish. The headset’s plush velvet ear cups and headband bring Sennheiser’s high-end headphones to mind, while its black plastic frame is unassuming enough to blend into your desk full of gaming gear.

The Sennheiser’s only real in-your-face feature is its absolutely massive microphone, which justifies itself with some nice bendability and good voice clarity (more on that later). You can’t pop off the mic for when you’re listening to music, but you can flip it up to get it out of the way and mute your voice. The 373D is light on the on-ear controls, but there’s a handy volume knob on the right ear cup for making adjustments on the fly.

All-day comfort

The Sennheiser 373D is so comfortable, I often forgot I was even wearing it during extra-long sessions. It’s the rare gaming headset that I’m happy to wear all day. That’s thanks to its extremely lightweight 12.5-ounce frame and a set of cozy, plush ear cups that managed not to get suffocatingly hot after hours of play.

The Sennheiser’s in-your-face feature is the absolutely massive microphone, which justifies its size with nice bendability and good voice clarity.

Sennheiser’s headset offers a pretty standard amount of flexibility, with a headband that you can raise about 2 inches up or down and ear cups that swivel up and down to adjust to your dome.

Immersive gaming performance

The 373D offers excellent 7.1 Dolby surround sound, which made just about every game I played sound significantly fuller.

Star Wars Battlefront became incredibly immersive on Sennheiser’s headset, as I could hear the roar of TIE Fighters and X-wings hovering over my head during a massive battle on Jakku. The 373D’s surround sound allowed me to pinpoint exactly where enemy blaster fire was coming from, and made thermal detonator explosions sound extra-impactful. When I toggled surround sound off, the loss of richness and directionality was immediately noticeable.

The 373D proved just as impressive for games centered around punching other people in the face, as I learned while using it to play some Street Fighter V and Batman: Arkham Knight. Punches and kicks had a nice crunch to them in both games, and fine details, such as the rippling of Batman’s cape as he glided around Gotham, were very easy to hear.

While the 373D is designed primarily for PC, it also worked just fine with my PS4 when I plugged it into the system’s USB port. You won’t get to utilize the headset’s Equalizer and surround sound features, but you’ll still be treated to pretty good sound and crisp chat.

Surround-ready software

The 373D’s companion app offers some nice extra features without being overwhelming. You can choose among three sound presets — Music, E-sport and Game — or turn off the Equalizer for a more neutral sound. The Music preset gives a big boost to bass, as does the Game one, just with less intensity. The E-sport mode, a feature after my own heart, provides a clackety, treble-heavy sound that does a nice job of highlighting footsteps and gunshots for competitive players.

MORE: Here Are the Best PC Game Controllers

Sound presets aside, the software also lets you toggle the microphone’s noise cancellation. You can also adjust the intensity of the headset’s sidetone (also known as mic monitoring), which lets you hear your own voice as you chat.

Crisp microphone, handy cables

Being able to have a clear conversation with your teammates is just as key as hearing in-game sounds, and the 373D offers one of the crispest microphones I’ve tested. A friend on PS4 told me I sounded «superclear» as we beat each other up in The King of Fighters XIV, and the bendable, noise-cancelling mic proved just as reliable during a conference call as it did during a heated gameplay session.

The 373D’s breakaway cable gives you about 9.5 feet of slack, which allowed me to sit comfortably whether I was hunched at my work PC or kicking back on my couch with my PS4. The cable’s dongle offers a single button for toggling Dolby surround sound; it’s a nice touch, but I would have also liked a volume switch or mute button.

The E-sport mode, a feature after my own heart, does a nice job of highlighting footsteps and gunshots for competitive players.

My only other minor gripe is the 373D’s lack of a 3.5-mm analog cable, which would have given this pricey headset some extra value as an everyday pair of headphones.

Sennheiser’s 373D shines in virtually every area possible. Its surround sound is fantastically immersive, its companion app provides some neat customization and, above all else, it just feels amazing. I’d almost recommend it on comfort alone, but not everyone can shell out $249 for the coziest ear cups around.

If you’re cool with going wireless and don’t mind a bulky headset, the $169 Razer ManO’War is an excellent (and much cheaper) option. But if you’d prefer a wired set that offers some of the best sound quality, comfort and mic clarity out there, the 373D is worth the price.

Sennheiser PC 373D Gaming Headset Review | Photos, Specs, Usability

Sennheiser’s PC 373D headset is plush, but the price will make you uncomfortable

By

Brendan Hesse

“The Sennheiser PC 373D is an incredibly comfortable $250 headset that sounds like it should be $100 cheaper.

Pros

  • Felt/memory foam padding is incredibly comfortable
  • Balanced sound

Cons

  • Design is less than subtle
  • Mic performance is underwhelming
  • Too costly for the features

Sennheiser is known for building high quality audio hardware that justifies the premium price tag it commands. The PC 373D is Sennheiser’s open-backed gaming headset (in contrast to the close-backed GAME ZERO), and at $250, are one of the more expensive units on the market. Unfortunately, that primo price tag just isn’t backed up with the right features.

Out of the box

Sennheiser houses the PC 373D in a protective plastic shell within their box, which is smart since the body of the 373D is plastic — an odd choice that undercuts the $250 price tag. The rest of the contents include an unusually long cable, user booklets, and warranty information.

Features and design

The PC 373D feature partially open-backed earcups, with a large boom mic affixed to the left earcup and a volume control wheel on the right. Velvet-wrapped memory foam lines the cups and the band, which feels incredibly good. Initial clamping force is a bit much, but once the memory foam settles, you’re left with an even and comfortable fit around the ears and head. This is, surprisingly, the best aspect of the PC 373D overall. Long play sessions are no issue, and we’d be hard pressed to find another headset that feels as comfortable as these. Unfortunately, our evaluation of the PC 373D is a lot less glowing from here.

As mentioned before, the earcups, mic, headband, and swivel joints are all made from hollow plastic with a smooth matte finish. This makes the PC 373D feel less posh than you might expect for the price. On the plus side, the headset is lightweight, which makes it all the more comfortable to wear.

The boom mic is another aspect we’re less than thrilled about. It’s a long, thick piece of plastic with a rubber strip in the middle that allows the mic to be moved a few degrees inward or outward. The rubber material doesn’t hold and tends to drift after it’s been moved. We didn’t find significant differences in recording capabilities at various distances, so the drift isn’t much of a problem.

The PC 373D’s curious cable is long, rubberized, and broken into two sections. On the headphone end is a 2.5mm jack, but the other end of that cable terminates with a female micro-USB jack with Dolby surround switching placed inline. The second section of cable finishes the job, with a male micro-USB tip terminating in a standard USB jack to be plugged into your PC. Our question is: Why? It’s an odd choice, especially when 7.1 surround sound can only be enabled when using the headset with Sennheiser’s included PC app. We’d rather have an inline mic mute button instead. The only way to mute is to flip the boom all the way up, but the only feedback that the mic is muted is a small mechanical click.

Performance

While some of the PC 373D’s design elements leave something to be desired, the headset sounds excellent — just as we expected from Sennheiser. Playback is clear, with balanced audio that doesn’t favor one aspect of the mix over another. This means that bombastic scenes in games like Battlefield 1 won’t rattle your teeth with bass rumble like the Razer Mano’War 7.1 would. That can be a good thing, especially in games like Heroes of the Storm or Overwatch, where audio cues are paramount to successful matches.

Once the memory foam settles, you’re left with an even and comfortable fit.

The included PC software works well enough, with a basic user interface that’s easy to understand. The program includes three EQ presets: music, gaming, and eSport. Unfortunately, we found these presets to be inferior to the standard mix, and avoided all of them for the lion’s share of our evaluation time. Dolby 7.1 surround effects are effective, and very clear, but just slightly edged out in terms of placement accuracy by the Logitech G533’s DTS 7. 1 performance. The Razer Mano’War 7.1 is similar in terms of surround capability, but the PC 373D’s sound signature is far superior.

The mic on the PC 373D is passable, but we were surprised to note the sound was especially compressed, with considerable pops accompanying consonant sounds like “p” and “t.” It does its job well enough, and we’d be willing to forgive the punchy consonants if there weren’t better mics out there on devices that cost $100 less. This point becomes even more apparent when you factor in the previously mentioned design decisions Sennheiser made with the mic. How strange this is for a company that makes microphones for professional use.

The PC 373D’s USB-only connection does technically mean it can be connected to a PlayStation 4, but we wouldn’t recommend it, primarily because the sound output level is quieter on PS4, but also because the lack of software compatibility removes the 7.1 and EQ settings. As the name implies, the PC 373D is a PC device, though add-on adapter cables will allow use with some gaming consoles.

PC gamers looking for an extremely comfortable fit and audiophile-grade music playback, with no budgetary constraints, may want to give the PC 373D consideration. For almost everyone else, this headset will be a tough sell.

Our Take

The PC 373D feels amazing, and it is hands-down the most comfortable PC gaming we’ve tested this year. However, design quirks, restricted use, and a princely price point make it a non-starter for most gamers.

Is there a better alternative?

While it’s a slight step down in terms of comfort, the Logitech G533 has a better mic, solid overall sound quality — including incredible DTS 7.1 surround sound — is wireless, and costs $100 less.

How long will it last?

We aren’t convinced the build quality will stand the test of time … or minor falls or accidents. The headset’s swivel joints also feel looser than we’d like, and the padding, however comfortable, can’t easily be cleaned (though it can be replaced).

Should you buy it?

No. If your sole directive for buying a new headset is comfort, the 373D are a worthwhile purchase, but by all other measures it’s no better than other premium headsets on the market, while costing $100 to $150 more. Because of this, we’d recommend looking elsewhere.

Evgeniya Vavilova, 18.03.2019

Advantages:
Headphones are very light, pleasant, the assembly is excellent.
The sound is excellent — 7.1 is implemented very well — the direction of the sound is determined without problems, Music in games sounds excellent, as well as dialogues.

Disadvantages:
Absolutely not capacious ear cushions (that’s what the ear part itself seems to be called) — if your ears are larger than average, they won’t fit in there, if your ears are slightly protruding, then alas, they will press.
Noise isolation is not a strong point of this model — external sounds are heard perfectly: a working TV or a cat smashing an apartment will perfectly complement the sounds of games. nine0013 The microphone is noticeable, but it’s just quite easy to adjust.

Comment:
I am a fan of a completely different brand, but I had to urgently buy new headphones, so I chose based on reviews.
And if I am completely delighted with the echo, then the design features made me very upset — it’s completely uncomfortable for me to sit in them for a long time (it puts a lot of pressure on my ear), and the audibility of external sounds turned out to be extremely unexpected (apparently, I didn’t pay attention to this aspect in the characteristics ).
In general, for those for whom these moments are not critical, as well as the shape of the ears allows you to comfortably wear this option — they are chic. And I will try to issue a refund or give it to a friend if she fits

Dzerzhinsky Felix, 03.12.2018

Pros:
7.1 Dolby Surround, sonic, perfect sound, professional noise-canceling microphone, flexible headband, large ear pads.

Disadvantages:

Comment:
Likes: you can sit in your ears for a really long time without consequences. Sound is easy to set up. There is an additional extension cable — for me it’s important. The sound reproduction is crystal clear, game sounds as if you were there yourself. Normal bass, I mostly play, but sometimes I listen to music or watch movies. nine0003

Igor Satorin, 03.12.2018

Pros:
Good sound. In general, the headphones are of high quality.

Cons:
This is a mediocre mic for the price. For everyday use it will fit, but for professional purposes it is better to find something else.
Headphones muffle extraneous noise. You will hear everything almost as well as without them.

Rudov Alexander, 01.12.2018
nine0003

Pros:
Good sound, excellent microphone.

Faults:
No 3.5mm cable included.

Comment:
Open-back headphones with velvet ear pads — don’t expect good sound isolation.
High-quality and balanced sound (not quite suitable for music).
When worn for a long time, no negative sensations arise. The
Microphone, compared to my past ROCCAT Kave XTD 5.1 Digital ears, is just great. nine0003

Ilya Repyshev, 08/10/2018

Advantages:
This is of course the sound! I also note the excellent build quality. The material of the ear cushions stands out in particular. The plastic is durable and pleasant to the touch.
Connected via USB, which is convenient and saves space on the desktop (no other wires stick out).

Disadvantages:
Not significant — you can see the bolt that is screwed under the microphone, it would be possible to put a plug.

Comment:
Quick switching of the sound mode, both from the button on the headphones (wire) and from the application on the PC. It is possible to connect through 3.5mm (you need to buy an adapter). In games, I mainly use 7.1 — in part, you can call it cheating, because you can hear everything around (BF1-4, PUBG, Overwatch).
There is nothing usual in watching movies, but if you compare a cheaper headset, the difference is certainly felt. In any case, it is much more pleasant to watch movies through the PC 373D.
There are several built-in equalizers. At first I thought it was inconvenient, in fact more is not required, everything is taken into account. nine0013 I tell all my friends about the microphone, I communicate mainly through Discord. When I enter the voice chat, the microphone amplifies my voice and I start to hear it, but it’s not like an echo, it’s a clear, clear voice that is pleasant to hear and does not interfere at all, but rather improves the conversation (it’s hard to describe, you have to hear). The interlocutors strongly felt the difference when communicating with this headset.

Boris Borisovich, 07/31/2018

Advantages:
It looks like it’s a complete analogue of G4ME ONE except for the USB card.

The sound is amazing, open design, the bass is in place. Nothing presses anywhere, the ears do not sweat, the ear pads are removable.

Disadvantages:
Now about the cons, because they are. The cable (detachable) can only be ordered native. No third-party is suitable due to the peculiarity of attaching to the ears themselves.

If you make it louder, you can hear everything perfectly a few meters away.

The sound is amazing, as described above, but high frequencies (12kHz and higher) are not enough for listening to music. But in general, this is more of a nitpick than a real flaw. nine0003

Comment:
A VERY high price for such ears. In fact, they ask for half the price for a dubious sound card, which is most likely an ordinary CMEDIA inside.

Artem Saveliev, 12/30/2017

Advantages:
is a worthy representative among the headsets of this manufacturer.

Disadvantages:
definitely do not see them.

Comment:
I am glad that I once bought this computer headset. This is a worthy representative among the headsets of this manufacturer. It is convenient in the gameplay and provides all the sounds of the game close to realistic. The functionality of the headset also makes it easier to control it during the game. The shape of the headphones is well thought out, they are soft and sit well on the head and ears, while not crushing them. So if you are still thinking about which headphones to buy, then choose this model and you will not be mistaken! nine0003

Pavel Monaikin, 11/24/2017

Advantages:
Sound quality, they sit comfortably on the head (soft and do not press after many hours), I would like to separately note the surround sound mode, the design of the headphones.

Disadvantages:
there is nothing to complain about — everything suits

Comment:
I have been using these headphones for more than two months, I often work with sound and video, so there is no way without such an accessory. What I like most about the Sennheiser PC 373D is that they don’t cause discomfort after long hours of work in them and the quality sound with surround sound (surround). The design is also quite okay, but for me it does not play a special role. I rarely use a microphone, but the sound transmission is also at a high level. There is a volume control which is handy. nine0003

Sinekopov Sergey, 25.09.2017

Advantages:
sound quality, convenience, chic microphone, voice sound without any interference,
good design there would be no price wire, otherwise it would be necessary to look for the wire

Sabelnikov Oleg, 02.09.2017

Advantages:
headphones are satisfactory in all respects.

Disadvantages:
was not found.

Comment:
I bought this computer headset a few months ago. With headphones, playing has become much more interesting and it turns out to immerse yourself in the gameplay with your head. They have a good sound, there are no extraneous noises and cod, they tightly wrap around the ears, thus creating complete noise isolation from the environment. When I’m wearing headphones, I live in my game world. The microphone is also important in the headphones, which gives a clear sound. I checked it when I played online with a few friends. They did not complain that they could not hear me well or that there were extraneous sounds and the microphone did not distort my voice. nine0003

Kudryavtseva Natalia, 28.08.2017

Advantages:
I like everything about them. However, I would prefer a more feminine color, even if it would be impractical.

Comment:
I don’t understand anything about decibels, ohms and cards. The son is in charge. Brought it, said it should fit. Previous «plugs» and «burdocks» acted on the nerves incredibly. They became friends almost immediately. They sat down not like a glove — they got used to it on their heads for a week. Then I stopped feeling them at all. About sound. I play with adult children in an MMORPG — it’s very impressive, I can hear the birds singing and the quiet cries of my son (the leader of our party). We started to fight better :). Jokes aside, the sound is great. I like to watch musical films of the past years. These headphones are something. The original is perfectly audible in dubbed ones — the oblique translation does not spoil the mood (well, no need to explain?). The music is great and the words are clear. I don’t know about young people, it’s probably a little expensive for them, but I can recommend it to the older generation without any hesitation. My comfort is worth the money, and the pleasure of music — even more so. And yes! I manage them on my own easily, there were no problems, although not on You with this technique. nine0003

Guest, 08/21/2017

Advantages:
The coolest novelty, I tried them on Igromir — light, comfortable, they sound great. I pre-ordered and now I’m waiting for delivery. Works great in tandem with the GSX 1000 amplifier, I recommend.

Disadvantages:
A little expensive, but you want to pay for such quality

Vanin Ivan, 07/06/2017

Advantages:
usb sound card, open, excellent sound transmission, light weight, comfortable microphone. Super sound. nine0003

Faults:

Comment:
The ear cushions are large and soft, deep, and comfortably cover the ears. After sitting in the headphones for several hours, I do not feel pressure and nothing hurts. I installed the driver, the sound became only cooler, especially for the microphone. I recommend a quality device!

Kutyavin, 06/27/2017

Advantages:
The main advantage is the sound quality in almost all usage scenarios (for its price). nine0013 To be fair, Sennheiser knows a lot about sound.
Wide soundstage and rich bass plus an open design.
You can even sometimes listen to music and enjoy the nuances that you have not heard before.
The sound in films is really impressive and captivates with volume and immersion.
In games, the potential of this device in terms of positioning is most fully revealed even with the complete Dongle, and with the GSX 1000 it’s just some kind of holiday.
Good design: comfortable soft headband and ear pads — for many hours of use nothing presses, and does not strain and the ears do not sweat. nine0003

Disadvantages:
1. After a couple of months of use, the volume control, which is located on the right «ear» of the headphones, began to rustle. This nasty rustling is clearly audible when adjusting the volume. It’s just kind of a shame, it’s a complete disappointment in the quality of Sennheiser. For such money, they could put a high-quality resistor on the volume control.
2. With the complete «whistle» (Dongle), the headphones obviously lack volume, especially in 2.0 (stereo).
3. To connect these headphones without a dongle to anything, even to the «native» GSX 1000, you need to buy a very expensive branded Sennheiser cable. nine0013 4. It is logical that some minus of the open design of these headphones is that you hear the sounds around you, and the people around you hear what you have in your headphones.

Comment:
In order to solve the problem of insufficient volume, the Sennheiser 373D purchased a Sennheiser GSX 1000, which is positioned as a headphone amplifier. However, Sennheiser again disappointed in this case. It is undeniable that the GSX 1000 is a very interesting DAC (DAC), but as a power amplifier it is nothing. It is inexplicable, but true — the GSX 1000 is not able to drive the 373D headphones with an impedance of 50 Ohms, and even the complete Dongle is even more so. As a result, I ordered a SCHIIT Magni 3 headphone amplifier. I really hope that as a result I will get a decent sound, both in quality and volume. nine0003

Summary: PC 373D and GSX 1000 are obviously raw products and not worth the money for which they are sold, and the budget, in pursuit of high-quality sound, exceeded all reasonable limits for me.

Update: got Schiit Magni 3, put everything together: «headphone amplifier» (essentially just a DAC) Sennheiser GSX 1000 -> real Headphone Amplifier Schiit Magni 3 -> Sennheiser 373D headset. Now I got a sound that suits me, but at what cost!

Denis Markov, 05.12.2016
nine0003

Advantages:
price / quality ratio

Disadvantages:
not yet

Comment:
I have had these headphones for more than a month. I want to say that this is not the most expensive model, but I am completely satisfied. The sound is good, no noise. The microphone is also good, they hear me without errors in the sound. In my opinion, a very good headset, happy with the purchase.

Voronets Olga, 10.10.2016

Advantages:
Sound, design, awesome microphone, comfortable and big.

Disadvantages:
suits everything

Comment:
I like everything in this headset, the sound is voluminous and clear, the bass is well audible. The microphone perfectly transmits the sound of the voice without crackling and interference. The headset itself, although light, is made of good materials, the ear cushions are large, they cover the ears entirely, it is comfortable and, most importantly, the ears do not sweat.
