An interesting concept circling around a virtual online RPG that is hidden behind a lackluster presentation.

If you aren’t interested in Kirito and Asuna’s budding romance or Yui playing the dual-roles of both game guide and in-game daughter, you aren’t likely to derive a lot of entertainment from Hollow Realization. There are better action-RPGs on Switch, such as the aforementioned Ys VIII, but certainly none that give the freedom of exploring and interacting your favourite SAO personalities.

Fans of the show and of complicated RPGs will no doubt find plenty to love here in the likable characters, complex character customization, and frantic battle system while those who would consider themselves to be unfamiliar with RPGs or the anime will no doubt be put off by the uneven, sometimes cringe-worthy writing, lack of effective tutorials, and general tedium present throughout the whole experience. We’d give Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization a recommendation overall – this is a good, quality RPG – just make sure you do a bit of research in advance to confirm that it’s what you’re looking for.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization is filled to the brim with tons of content and story details that makes it more than worth the reasonable price tag. Fans of the Sword Art Online franchise have a lot to do and tons of easter eggs to uncover with allies from across the anime, and will undoubtedly enjoy this new foray into Ainground.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization Deluxe Edition is based on an engaging premise. However, this clumsy port of a title not exactly excellent fails to realize the potential that has fascinated the public.

You need to fall in to a certain bracket to like this game. It is supposed to be Anime but I consider this to be more in the cartoon bracket. It has a very child friendly vibe. The conversations, the discussions are not dark and deep, they are light hearted and with little point to them. It is just happy fun.
Combat is hack and slash, graphics are lovely. Yes not ground breaking detail, or best optimisation for that matter but it just makes a lovely world and the sound just goes perfectly.
I find adventuring around open worlds completely boring. It is always over rated but I just enjoyed it here. I love that I can have a chat whilst playing my game and not losing track of either game, or conversation. I love that I can run around one handed whilst I sip my wine and then when see a baddy, put both hands back on.
It is a lovely peaceful game. I have over 60 Switch games and this has remained in my top row of most played forever and it is one of the earliest games I bought for my Switch. To put this in perspective I have Stardew valley, which is on 3x the use because I have two kids that play that to death, Fire Emblem 3 Houses my favourite SRPG, Ys Origin my 2nd fav action adventure RPG and Garou Mark of the Wolves my favourite fighter ever are the only other games up there on the winners table with this. I think that speaks volumes.
Not for everyone but if it is your cup of tea, you’ll love it… Expand

I will say for sure that 90% of the content on the PlayStation 4 is in this game, the only thing I believe is missing is the ordinal scale pre-order stuff from back when they’re trying to advertise the movie, but all in all it’s still good and also handheld mode can be a little tough on the game but it’s not the worst thing ever. … Expand

Review: Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization – Destructoid
Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization might be the best Sword Art Online game yet.
Then again, we might not be talking about all that much. This is, after all, just the third major Sword Art Online game (fifth, counting revamped re-releases), situated along a quality range firmly within the “inoffensive” spectrum.
That said, Hollow Realization would be easy to recommend, and in fits of inspired design, comes the closest yet to really capturing what it might feel like to actually play the online RPGs Sword Art Online‘s cast are constantly engaged with. In short, it’s a game that almost warrants an an unqualified thumbs-up.
Now, if only it weren’t a Sword Art Online game…
Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization (PS4 [Reviewed], PS Vita)
Developer: Aquria
Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
Released: October 27, 2016 (JP) November 8, 2016 (NA/EU/AP)
MSRP: $59.99 (PS4), $39.99 (Vita)
I’ll clarify that last sentence in a bit, but first, the good news: Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization is a genuine good time, mechanically. This was especially true for me, since I’ve always had a soft spot for games that try to riff on other genre’s conventions.
It was a real treat to see a single-player RPG attempt to represent the tropes and structure of a persistent online MMO, and Hollow Realization captures the aesthetic masterfully. The interface mimics the MMO look, bristling with icons and even using a faux chat window and “event log” to both track combat actions and remind players of their immediate objectives. From fake friends lists, to carefully placed uses of common MMO terminology, and even how the motion-controlled in-game interface appears to pop up near the character models when players use the actual in-game options menus, Hollow Realization is the most successful try yet to foster the illusion that one is actually playing the fictional VR online games the Sword Art Online’s characters play.
It’s effectively scratched the itch I’ve had ever since . hack had gone to pot, and that’s worth appreciating. It’s not entirely novel, of course, and is, in essence, a better-executed take on Hollow Fragment’s approach, helped along by a conveniently familiar premise. The setting for the latest anime go-around is “Sword Art: Origin,” a quasi-reboot of the original “Sword Art Online,” the game where Kirito and his pals were first trapped in a years-long life-or-death struggle. Of course, the death-game aspect has been helpfully excised from the new title, and the crew apparently feels safe enough to revisit the site of their first ordeal, now that it’s safe to do so.
In some ways, the fact that it never becomes un-safe to do so is what’s most disappointing about Hollow Realization’s narrative. On the one hand, it would be a bit cliché for them to get trapped in another death game, and in some ways run counter to the point of the stories. And yet, at least the death-game story was exciting. Like Lost Song before it, Hollow Realization has players literally just hanging out at the controls while they watch a dude and his guildies faff about in a game. A significant chunk of the main campaign’s motivation is literally just Kirito going “Hey, let’s try going to that cool-looking place off in the distance!” and then everyone going there.
I’m not the kind of person that demands epic adventures out of every RPG. Some of the best moments in these games come when there’s little at stake, when sometimes you and your pals just want to throw a party or go on a road trip or grind some crafting materials or race some Chocobos. But there have to be some stakes, or at least a sense of progression in the characters to make the time spent seem worthwhile, and Hollow Realization fails to deliver on that front. Even its ostensible main plot, involving a seemingly sentient NPC named Premier, feels like a retread of the many “This AI character is real!” subplots that Sword Art Online has already explored. Hell, Kirito even has an AI daughter, Yui, that’s had a presence in every game so far, so this story doesn’t even get the benefit of novelty.
None of this is benefited by the deliberate languid pacing of the game, which tends to stick “story” quests in a very hazy progression between sometimes hours-long bouts of exploration and sidequest messing-about. It’s one thing to encourage players to chill out and not “mainline” everything, but it’s another to have a campaign structure so loose that I get worried that I’d somehow broken the game.
In some ways, I can’t entirely blame Hollow Realization for being how it is. Sword Art Online as a whole has never really revisited the heights of its original story arc, so in some ways one could argue that the game is staying true to form. It’s just a bigger bummer now, because this time around, the systems and technical side feel robust enough to have supported riskier, bigger stories and characterization. Gameplay-wise, Hollow Realization feels like a more successful, refined iteration of what Aquria tried to do with Hollow Fragment (and Infinity Moment before it), without the oversimplification that plagued the Artdink-developed Lost Song.
This is most evident in the combat, which cuts down on menu gymnastics and ramps up some of the more real-time aspects, while still preserving that game-within-a-game feel. Face buttons still trigger basic attacks and pre-selected “Sword Skill” specials, while pushing in the touchpad brings up an MMO-style “hotbar” to access other abilities and items. Timing and positioning have greater sway, as well, and players will need to both keep an eye on enemy attack zones and the execution of their skills to extract the greatest effect out of their abilities and party members.
Outside of combat, Hollow Realization tries to simulate the social aspect of MMOs. Players can attempt to chat up and befriend any other player or NPC, even the random ones walking around town that aren’t part of the main cast. A button can bring up a “profile page” showing a player’s personality traits, and each personality trait (such as “Curious” or “Sexy”) comes with a series of related attributes and abilities. With enough badgering, any fellow player can be recruited as a party member, and praising them when they do good things in battle can affect their personality, combat tactics, and stat growth. It’s a clever system, though it may be slightly too subtle in practice, as during my time I couldn’t really figure out how to engage with it in ways beyond pressing a button to say “Good Job!” whenever my girlfriend stabbed a monster particularly hard.
It’s easier to engage with the upgraded visuals, though. Hollow Realization finally looks better than an upscaled PS3 game, with more detailed models and environments, and a more colorful, lush look overall. Unfortunately for Vita owners, this comes at catastrophic costs in performance. Don’t play the Vita version.
I feel conflicted about Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization, because while it’s never been more interesting to play as a game, the fact that its narrative is typical of latter-day Sword Art Online stories has actually become something of a liability. A bolder story, one that took more risk, established a better sense of stakes, or even did something other than tread water would definitely not be Sword Art Online-like, and would make it much easier to recommend to people outside the show’s fanbase. As it stands, though, Hollow Realization remains a Sword Art Online game, for better and worse.

Database server vendors rethink networking strategy | Computerworld Russia
The database server market is phasing out the NetWare operating system. Despite the performance improvements in NetWare 4.1 SMP, analysts are talking about an increasing migration to Unix
and Windows NT Server to better leverage existing applications. In their opinion, the majority of applications for databases will be focused on these OS now.
«NetWare was installed on database servers to support existing systems,» recalls Steve Drain, a consultant for Scientific Application International, a systems integrator in San Diego, California. «Companies already had hundreds of file servers running the NetWare operating system, so it was easier for them to put the same on the database server.» Today, however, according to Dan Kuznetsky, an analyst at International Data Corp., «it seems that NetWare is beginning to be seen as an insufficient database platform for business applications. »
The reorientation of users and manufacturers to other platforms has prompted Informix Software not to adapt the latest models of its next generation database servers to the NetWare OS. This was announced by David Watson, who is responsible for the supply of servers and network connectivity in the company. He also noted that Informix will continue to sell another, lower-tier version of the Informix-SE server that interoperates with NetWare.
Corporations Oracle and Sybase are not going to leave NetWare users to their fate at all. Both are planning to release NetWare 4.1 SMP-compatible products this winter. At the same time, they are mainly attracted by the increased speed, made possible by new methods of parallel processing of commands.
Oracle, a recognized leader in the database server market that controls nearly 60 percent of NetWare-integrated products, will soon offer Oracle7 Enterprise Server for NetWare 4.1 SMP and will release a version of the Oracle Workgroup Server suite by the end of next year. In both cases, the mode of parallel requests is implemented, NetWare directory services and graphical control programs are combined, fault tolerance is improved, and the possibility of parallel work of three hundred users is provided.
For Sybase, in the first quarter of next year the company will release a new version of its SQL Server 11 database that is compatible with NetWare 4.1 SMP, according to its deputy chief of operations, Dennis McAvoy. And by the end of this year, Sybase will offer a version of SQL Anywhere (formerly Watcom SQL) for NetWare 4.1 and another product that is a combination of NetWare OS and database server. (Oracle stopped work on a similar project in August).
According to Bob Epstein, vice vice president of Sybase, NetWare and the operating system are still a significant part of the company’s business. However, Sybase now considers the NetWare operating system to be less than an application server. It is beginning to focus more and more on building network drivers and providing services such as distributed directory services. Along the way, Epstein notes that such a policy is consistent with Novell’s own intentions to make network NetWare «more neutral with respect to other operating systems.»
Yet none of the efforts Oracle and Sybase are making to support NetWare can make it as popular as another operating system, Windows NT. With significantly fewer installations than NetWare, it is much more attractive as an application server.
The ability to create new products for Windows NT is now so important that Oracle is going to release its latest software developments first in versions for this operating system and only then make them compatible with Unix and NetWare. This primarily applies to operational testing of the first release of the Oracle8 database server, which should be ready by next spring. The company intends to build dynamic analytical query processing operations into it, as well as implement support for object type data on its basis for the first time.
Windows NT and Unix are pushing NetWare into the database server operating system market
