Santa Claus in Trouble is a 3D arcade game developed by CDV Software. Free-to-play, this game will take you back to the Christmas tale. Here, you will play as Santa Claus, who is facing trouble. All the Christmas presents are lost, and he must retrieve them to save Christmas.

Santa Claus in Trouble is a platformer game with ten levels. The premise is set in a wintertime village and comes with a set of four Christmas carols as background music. However, players must note that this is a simple game. Aside from the short gameplay, it lacks some useful features.

Find all the gifts

Santa Claus in Trouble is a fun jump n’ run game. The story starts with Santa Claus losing all the presents just before Christmas. Now, he must find all of them to save the joyous occasion. The problem is, there are presents all over the village. To move around, he must jump from chimney to chimney. You must be careful, though. Santa must not fall or the game will end.

There are ten levels in this Christmas game. At the end of each stage, your collected presents will be your points. Collect as many presents as you can to be the best Santa. However, that is easier said than done. Aside from the danger of the abyss, there are also obstacles blocking Santa’s way. You will find trolls, snowmen, moving platforms, and chimney fires. Even birds are a hindrance. While they are fairly simple, they can still pose seriously tough situations when in groups.

Simple yet frustrating

For a freeware game, Santa Claus in Trouble boasts great visuals. Its wintertime village map comes with colorful and smooth graphics. Added to the yuletide feels are the carols playing in the background. Although it is only a set of four songs, and it will loop endlessly as you play. The sound effects are also nice, which includes cawing birds and Santa grunting as he jumps.

Don’t be deceived by the simple and fun premise, though. Santa Claus in Trouble can be extremely difficult to finish. Sure, the first half of the game is a walk in the park, but the rest can be devilishly frustrating. Adding to the difficulty is the lack of a save feature. With this, you will start from the beginning every time you quit the game or die.

Additionally, the camera is constantly bobbing up and down during areas where you have to jump. This makes it disorienting for the players. And as if that is not enough, the developers, for whatever reason, make the camera angle change to overhead whenever you jump. Then it switches again during landing, which makes it a challenge to control Santa’s jump and landing.

Still a good game

Bottom line, Santa Claus in Trouble is a fun casual game that you can play to put you in a holiday mood. The game offers simple mechanics and boasts good wintertime visuals and music. Although, some levels can be a bit frustrating. The lack of a save feature also makes you play the same stages, over and over. Nevertheless, it is still a good game to pick up.

PROS

  • Simple mechanics
  • Great wintertime visuals
  • Fun Christmas carol background music

CONS

  • 10 levels only
  • Lacks save feature
  • The camera view is constantly bobbing up and down

Every year around Christmas, it is a solemn tradition in my family to pull out any holiday-themed videos and computer games you can find and play them. Every year I try to find new games, so I’ll have to dig deeper and deeper into the nooks and crannies of gaming history to pull up some interesting Christmas time gaming classics before experimenting.

This year I found a new crop of obscure Christmas games to enjoy—both retro and a little more recent. You’ll find titles from platforms as diverse as CDs and MS-Dos, the Colorway Boy game, and Dreamcast games. If you manage to track them down, I think you’ll enjoy as many of them as I have. Even if these games aren’t perfect, I really appreciate their Christmas spirit and the nostalgia of bygone years that they evoke in me.

Commander Toy Christmas Special (With Dreamcast, 1999)

At the end of 1999, the UK edition of official Oscar magazine and Sega Europe published a special demo version of the game for the Dreamcast classic Commander toys. In the Commander Toy Christmas Special, you play as Santa Claus with a satchel (along with the usual die-cast toy car) navigating a holiday-decorated house looking for the missing gifts. It’s a lost treasure, to be sure. If you want to try it yourself, you can find it on the DreamOn 4 demo disk containing the CC issue. American Edition official Oscar magazine later published it from the January 2001 issue of volume 10 demo disc.

    Icicle Works (Commodore 64, 1985)

If you’re a Boulder Dash and Christmas fan, why not combine? As a result of icicle work, UK release on Commodore 64, Commodore 16, and ZX Spectrum. In the game, you run through the snow dodging giant snowballs (instead of boulders) while collecting gifts (instead of rocks). Simple fun with lots of holiday spirit thrown in.

  • 6

    County Christmas (KD-i, 1996)

Several Christmas games appeared on the doomed disc-i multimedia platform in the 1990s. One of the most interesting for me is Christmas Country, a platform game where you play as an elf helping Santa on Christmas Day. Bad Elf has stolen Santa’s list and you have to dodge igloo turtles and igloo snails while collecting stars on your way to victory. Like most CD-I games, this isn’t a top shelf, but it’s definitely one of those obscure digital heirlooms.

  • 5

Santa Claus Jr. (Gameboy Colors, 2001)

In this festive European color boy game, you play as someone named Nick—Klaus’s son, I guess—and you have to find all the lost gifts stolen by the evil sorcerer. It’s standard platformer fare, and it’s received an update called Santa Claus Jr. in advance for Game Boy Advance for next year.

  • 4

Santa Claus in trouble (windows, 2002)

In 2002, a German developer created the only Santa Claus 3D platformer game I know (other than its sequel) and released it for free on the internet. As a result, you can’t complain too much about this beautiful title, memories of Mario titles and Kazooie’s banjo style. It’s really fun to finally control Santa Claus in 3D, although it’s frustratingly difficult in later levels. I myself wonder why not a major developer is engaged in a modern Santa platformer like this; I would buy it without hesitation.

  • 3

3D Christmas Adventures: Rescue Santa Claus (Dos, 1996)

Back in the 1990s, a company called Pie in the Sky software created a 3D game creation system that allowed users to create their own Wolfenstein 3D-like first-person shooter games. To promote the creation of the system, pie in the sky released this cheerful and festive 3D fps, as is the name on the Internet. In the game, an evil ice wizard has frozen all of Santa’s elves and you have to run around thawing them with a candy that shoots magic sprinkles. It’s a charming indie feel that reminds me of the glory days of MS-Dos.

Santa Claus is comin’ to town (for Wii, 2011)

Last year, when I was looking for new Christmas games I’ve never played before, I turned to the Wii, which hosts many related titles. Of these, my favorite is the side-scrolling platformer based on the 1970s Rankin/bass-stop-motion movie of the same name.
