    The first Ryzen 5000 processors go on sale today. With new processors, AMD plans to attack the last bastion of Intel, that is, to take the lead in gaming performance. Matisse processors have already moved Intel well on price and multi-threaded performance, provoking the chip giant to counterattack. Today we’ll see if AMD has been able to become the market leader in terms of performance. We are publishing tests of two AMD Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 5 5600X processors just at the time of the NDA removal.

    In July 2019, AMD launched its first major attack with the introduction of the first Zen 2 processors. After Zen 1 and Zen +, which set the stage for improvements in subsequent years, we now have high-performance processors that once again become a worthy alternative to Intel. Matisse processors like the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X, Ryzen 9 3900X and Ryzen 5 3600X, as well as the younger Ryzen 3, were able to catch up with their main competitor for the first time in many years. And for the price and multi-threaded performance, AM4 CPUs with 16 cores were able to successfully repel Intel’s counterattack in the form of Core i9-10900K.     With the first Ryzen 5000 models available today, AMD is about to introduce the fastest processors for gamers. AMD decided to skip the Ryzen 4000 family on desktop PCs, although it was previously planned. However, the CPU data came out on the mobile segment in the form of Renoir. Therefore, the flagship AM4 processor will now be called Ryzen 95950X instead of Ryzen 9 3950X.

    In early announcements, AMD was talking about performance gains between 9 and 39%, averaging 19%. The reason for the further refinement of the Zen architecture, AMD has made changes to the front and back of the pipeline, the hierarchy of caches, which provides a performance boost. The CCX has now doubled the number of cores, reducing the need to communicate with an external I/O die. Therefore, the delays between the cores should decrease. This will benefit, in particular, games and single-threaded applications. In addition, the L3 cache is now shared, which should also reduce latency.

    But according to the specifications, the difference is much smaller. Like its predecessors, the AMD Ryzen 5000 supports DDR4-3200 in dual-channel mode, offers 24 PCIe Gen4 lanes and a TDP of up to 105W. Crystals are still being manufactured using the 7nm process technology. Depending on the Vermeer model, up to 16 cores are available, although the lower 4-core models in the Ryzen 3 lineup are sure to come out in the coming weeks. In terms of clock speeds, you can see a slight increase in Boost when comparing generations, but AMD expects to get more performance per clock speed due to numerous optimizations.

    Four models announced, two we tested

    AMD has prepared four processors for the launch of the Ryzen 5000 line. The leader is AMD Ryzen 9 5950X with 16 cores and 32 threads, TDP is 105W, base clock is 3.4GHz, Boost is 4.9GHz. The next model is Ryzen 9 5900X, the number of cores has decreased to 12, clock speeds are 3.7 or 4.8 GHz, respectively. Due to fewer cores, the L3 cache has been cut from 8MB to 6MB, but the L3 cache remains at 64MB, as does a TDP of 105W. The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X offers eight cores and 16 threads at 3.8 and 4.7 GHz.
