The 15 Best Turn-Based RPGs On The PS4

While PlayStation 5 consoles remain a hot commodity at this time, the PlayStation 4 continues to be used by millions of players around the globe who either haven’t upgraded yet or don’t plan on it. Because of this, the PS4 is some people’s primary platform to play many of the great games in the PlayStation library.

Those who are interested in turn-based RPGs don’t have to rush to next-generation just yet. That is because there are plenty of different games on the PlayStation 4 that are worth checking out if players haven’t already. While some of the best turn-based RPGs on the platform are among the best ever released, there are a few gems here that some players may have missed.

Updated by Chris Birsner on June 23, 2022: As time goes by, the PS5 continues to add to its extensive library, including some games that are included with the all new PS Plus subscription tiers. But while there continues to be new games releasing daily, the system continues to lack a deep list of the best turn-based RPGs. Despite there being plenty of great games coming, a genre that many gaming fans love isn’t getting a lot of entries right this minute. That said, there are so many PS4 turn-based RPGs to choose from thanks to backwards compatibility that it will certainly take the edge off while waiting for a next-generation experience.

15 Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales

The Witcher 3 is considered one of the best open-world RPGs of the last decade, so it is no surprise that the series’ branches have led to spin-offs in and beyond video games. One of the smaller spin-offs is a card-oriented turn-based RPG known as Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales.

A single-player campaign of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, Thronebreaker takes place before the events of The Witcher trilogy and follows the story of Queen Meve as she seeks to build alliances and take down foes to recapture land. The battle system is a modified version of Gwent, as all the individuals in Meve’s army are represented by cards.

14 SaGa Frontier

There are plenty of classic turn-based RPGs that have been remade to be played on the PS4 and PS5. One of these games is the remastered version of SaGa Frontier, which was originally released in 1997 but was re-released nearly a quarter of a century later.

The unique concept of SaGa Frontier is that players can choose from seven different characters that each have their own storyline and quest that they are looking to fulfill. Players are also free to explore the solar system that the game takes place in, called The Regions. The PS4 turn-based RPG remaster has a simple battle system where skills are learned the more they fight.

13 Bug Fables

The Paper Mario franchise is an iconic one, but its days of being a traditional turn-based RPG are long gone. To combat this, fans of the game took matters into their own hands and made a new RPG available on all consoles, including PlayStation 4, called Bug Fables.

This indie darling took many of the mechanics from its inspiration and put them into a game about bugs named Vi, Kabbu, and Leif. The trio embarks on a search for artifacts that could lead to them finding the Everlasting Sapling, a plant that claims to grant its owners eternal life.

Some of the best turn-based RPGs on the PS4 are those which involve tactical gameplay where every move made will have an impact on the game moving forward. A series that was short-lived, but brought three solid entries to the table was The Banner Saga.

Players take on the stories of two different individuals whose paths eventually cross. The gameplay revolves around strategic decision-making while facing enemies known as Dredge and dealing with the consequences of winning or losing these battles. This is a little different from other RPGs, where players usually have to start from a save state.

11 South Park: The Fractured But Whole

Role-playing games tend to have rich stories that make players fall in love with authentic characters in a mystical world. Then there are games like South Park: The Fractured But Whole which aims only to make players laugh out loud as they experience its very goofy world.

Set a day after the events of South Park: The Stick of Truth, this turn-based RPG follows the new kid and the usual cast of South Park characters as they start up a new role-playing adventure where they pretend to be superheroes. South Park: The Fractured But Whole strays from its predecessor, however, as the turn-based combat takes place on a grid.

10 Blue Reflection: Second Light

Koei Tecmo has worked on a handful of popular titles, including some of the best turn-based RPGs. One of their more under-the-radar titles was a recent one called Blue Reflection: Second Light. It was a sequel to a 2017 game that came out just four years later.

Players take control of Ao, a girl who wakes up in a school in the middle of water along with other students, none of whom have any memory of why or how they got there. Players will go through a series of episodes in Blue Reflection: Second Light growing closer to the students, which can help the player in the turn-based battles with monsters.

9 Wasteland 2

It took nearly 25 years for the hit 1988 game Wasteland to get any sort of sequel, and it delivered one of the best turn-based RPGs on the PlayStation 4 and other platforms. Wasteland 2 takes place 15 years after the events of its predecessor and is set in Los Angeles and parts of Arizona.

Players can be in control of up to four different characters and joined by as many as three non-playable characters in a seven-member party. The game pulls from tabletop roleplaying and focuses on tactical combat scenarios. All characters serve as Rangers as part of a team called Echo-One as they investigate the death of Ace, a character from the original game.

One of the best PS5 turn-based RPGs is actually a PS4 release, but Ruined King: A League of Legends Story is such a fun game to dive into that the generation it was released on doesn’t matter, especially for those who love games from the people at Riot.

Ruined King is based in the Shadow Isles where a threat called the Black Mist looms over the region. Players can take on the role of six characters to help find the source of the force. The turn-based battles rely heavily on the game’s Initiative Bar.

7 The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Of Cold Steel 4

Nihon Falcom is known for a handful of significant RPG franchises, but one of its bigger properties is The Legend of Heroes series. One of the more recent entries was a continuation of an ongoing series within the property, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 4, which takes place almost immediately after the events of the third game.

Just like the other entries of the series, this turn-based RPG primarily uses menu-based combat. This is also the second game that uses the «Brave Order» system, which allows players to earn buffs and heals for their player by spending «Brave Points.» The game also brings back the «Break Gauge» mechanic, which, after a certain number of attacks, weakens an enemy for one turn.

6 Atelier Sophie 2

An entry in another long-running series by Koei Tecmo, Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream is a PS4 turn-based RPG that is the 4th in the overall Mysterious series and the 23rd game overall in the franchise.

Players can take on the role of six different characters, with the focus being on Sophie Neuenmuller as she begins her quest to become a licensed alchemist. Along with turn-based battles in Atelier Sophie 2 that includes both primary and support characters, there is also an alchemy system that players will need to learn to create important items.

5 Final Fantasy 8

When trying to find the best role-playing games to play, it’s hard to ignore the Final Fantasy series. But while there are plenty of great entries to choose from, one of the best turn-based RPGs in the franchise was Final Fantasy 8, with a remastered version out on PlayStation 4.

The story follows a group of mercenaries on their quest to take down the evil sorceress Ultimecia, whose end goal is to compress time. Final Fantasy 8saw the introduction of the Guardian Forces battle system, which allows players to use a monster as an optional attacker during battle.

4 Dragon Quest 11

Another major franchise that has long been part of the conversation of the best turn-based RPGs is Dragon Quest. Its latest entry, Dragon Quest 11, was yet another hugely successful game that has been mostly praised for its narrative and characters. The enhanced edition is on PlayStation 4.

Dragon Quest 11 takes place in the world of Erdrea. The player takes on the role of a hero who survives the destruction of his kingdom as an infant. The gameplay revolves around traversing the world and fighting monsters. Just like in recent games, there are no random encounters, as all monsters can be seen while walking around in the Overworld.

3 Yakuza: Like A Dragon

One of the few games that can actually played like a PS5 turn-based RPG, Yakuza: Like A Dragon is one of the games that players can experience a difference visually on PS4 and PS5. This is the seventh installment in the series, the first one that isn’t a regular action RPG.

Players take on the role of Ichiban after he has been betrayed by his former yakuza members. Players will partake in many quests that include a unique combat system and various different mini-games. The game has been praised by many who see as one of the best turn-based RPGs made in the last five years.

2 Undertale

Most turn-based RPGs are based around fighting monsters and enemies to the death, but what if there were alternative ways to resolve conflicts? That’s the basis of the combat in Undertale, an indie hit created by Toby Fox. Originally released exclusively on PC, the game has since been released on almost all modern consoles, including the PlayStation 4.

Undertale revolves around a child who has fallen down into a society of monsters who were shielded off from the rest of the human world. While attempting to get back to the surface, players will befriend the monsters and help them with their own struggles. Players can choose to fight enemies they encounter or perform specific actions that will make the monster feel better.

1 Persona 5 Royal

When talking about the best turn-based RPG on the PlayStation 4, it would be hard to make an argument for any other game outside of Persona 5 Royal. Along with the turn-based battle system, the game incorporates elements of dungeon crawlers and dating simulators to make a unique mashup of a video game.

Persona 5 Royalfollows a high school student known as Joker and his friends as they become the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. Their mission is to enter the Metaverse and steal away the evil that may lie in adults’ hearts. The combat revolves around using weapons wielded by the characters as well as their Personas, which specialize in dishing out special attacks.

RPG games (Role Playing Game) — role-playing games have long been the most popular and best-selling category of software on Steam, online stores and electronics stores. Even at the dawn of computer games, RPGs produced the biggest shock on users. It was a huge step forward, after plain rpg games and shooters without a special plot.

Immediately comes to mind the furor that caused the first Fallout and Diabolo. The current generation of players do not even know what it is. Of course, it is impossible to even compare these games. The RPG industry just «moved into a high-speed elevator.» For thirty years, developers have managed to change engines and give games the most realistic graphics and mechanics of character movements.

However, the desire to control a character, get self-defense items, fight off enemies or explore dark secrets among users has not faded. The developers are trying to please the players, working out the plot, mechanics and other little things as much as possible.

There are some disputes on the net that any «minimal rpg» can be called an RPG game. But it is worth considering such a factor as character development during the game. A new generation of games tends not to «close» into a certain shell, for example, a shooter. RPG elements are increasingly found in almost every iconic novelty in the world of computer games.

So, what are the top ten hot RPG games currently in the «golden pool»?

1.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne

Find out the price

Someone might say that DLC is not a full-fledged game, but this completely contradicts Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. Content of such high quality complements the world of Monster Hunter World so much that it cannot be missed by the top. Conceived as a story continuation, Iceborne went far beyond the narrow limits.

The beginning of the game does not shine with novelty — another anomaly has attacked the planet. This caused the wyverns to withdraw from their homes and immediately flee. An emergency search expedition is immediately created, where the main character is included. The new world is striking on a global scale. The main highlight of the game is fantastic mechanics and detailed study of new monsters.

The storyline allows the character to explore an outlandish world that is terribly «cold». The developers were not too lazy and added some «dust». As soon as the character leaves the camp in the cold, stamina immediately begins to gradually decrease. To restore it, a hot drink is used.

Since the character is walking in the snow, the movement speed is low. This gave the developers an opportunity and a reason to draw the landscape in detail. The cool novelties and spectacular solution include traveling on monsters. The character has to be much more attentive to pumping. Hunting monsters the old fashioned way will not work.

As usual, several types of weapons have been added.

Pleased with more than thirty opponents: from the new legian and bariotes.

With the completion of the main line of the game, a new location «guiding lands» opens up, where hunters can do what they love, honing their skills.

Pros

  • cool monsters;
  • unique location detailing;
  • thoughtful ecosystem.

Cons

  • there are «holes» in the plot.

2. Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom

Another creation of Japanese developers definitely fits the «top» category. Calling the project «Ni no Kuni» a children’s cartoon fairy tale is possible only by the cover of the game or screenshots. Everything is much deeper, however, as is customary in the Land of the Rising Sun. This is an absolute game «in itself», but the fact that this is one of the most interesting RPG solutions cannot be argued.

Get the price

The Japanese pay great attention to graphics, it looks fantastic. Approximation of the smallest details fascinates with elaboration.

The protagonist, having died in the flames of an atomic bomb, returns to a peculiar form of life in the animal world. The character will become the main adviser to the young prince, who suffers from intrigue and must go through many trials.

The game is rich in internal content, excellent mechanics of battles and juicy, slightly atypical for Europeans colors.

Pros

  • almost perfect combat mechanics;
  • a combination of a bewitching picture and a musical range.

Cons

  • easy game to play;
  • poorly developed interface.

3. Dragon Age: Inquisition

Find out the price

Dragon Age: Inquisition needs no special introduction. It is certainly too early to consider it a standard, but the game is close to this title. The main thing that the developers managed to combine is the plot and scale. After all, the studio had, let’s say, failures before this game. Some of them hurt their reputation very badly.

Dragon Age: Inquisition fully met and exceeded the expectations of the fans. Specialists and gamers especially appreciated the attention to detail, but which, on a huge scale, developers could spit. The system really comes in when a certain meaning is really drawn from the dialogues and has an impact on the game.

Pros

  • plot;
  • details.

Minuses

  • mechanics sometimes needs improvement.

4.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Immerse yourself in the medieval life of a warrior of honor named Wolf, offers another creation of the studio FromSoftware. The developers have stopped flirting with evil spirits and this time the main character is an ordinary warrior. His fate is not easy, however, like everyone else in the Middle Ages. The wolf was raised by a stern warrior who gave him invaluable knowledge and skills. Now the Wolf is making his way.

Find out the price

Before us, a fairly accurately reproduced Japanese historical drama of enmity between two rulers is being played out. The plot develops quite smoothly, without jumps. This is facilitated by detailed secondary characters with their own history. For this, the creators of Sekiro should be praised, because making “cardboard” NPCs is much easier. This allows you to more fully understand the motivation of each of the heroes with whom the Wolf will face on his way.

The game cannot be called simple. It is very difficult precisely in the mechanics of understanding each battle. Everything, even nature has its meaning for the Wolf. The design perfectly conveys the atmosphere of anxiety. And the mechanics with which the fighters fiercely fencing with swords is the ideal embodiment of duels.

Pros

  • great combat system;
  • a huge number of caches and secrets;
  • fresh design.

Cons

  • sometimes, during «fights», the picture jumps.

5. Bloodborne

Bloodborne perfectly conveys the bloody atmosphere of horror of the city absorbed by the epidemic and the attack of monsters. What can I say — you can immediately see the hand of the master. This is another masterpiece of the classics: Hidetaka Miyazaki and FromSoftware. They organically built their story against the background of the epidemic.

Find out the price

It is clear what is required of the main character — to reveal the secret of the epidemic, defeat the monsters and understand his essence. This is the first time I’ve seen Miyazaki choose to subordinate gameplay to story.

Since the author is famous for his ability to constantly find opposition against the players, he radically changed the mechanics of the battle. Making it truly complex, but insanely interesting. The game is worth devoting enough time to it. From the first time, the user is sure to miss a couple of important turns.

Pros

  • gloomy atmosphere of an epidemic-ridden city;
  • almost perfectly thought out world;
  • dynamism of action scenes;
  • design;
  • labyrinths.

Cons

  • multiplayer often crashes;
  • character assembly — three with a minus.

6. Dark Souls 3

The creators of the third part invite the player to continue their adventures in Lothric, where nasty creatures have dug in again. There were already hints of the third part of Dark Souls in the second. Artifacts were on the way of the hero. Now I have to go there in person. The design deserves a solid five. This is a completely different location, not at all reminiscent of the first parts.

Find out the price

The hero has a long way to go to complete all the puzzles and answer the main question. On the way, as usual, there are characters with whom you need to have conversations. Their meaning has been tightened up a bit, but there are outright blunders.

I was pleased with the work on the classes. The creators tensed up and added hybrids. Their role is quite interesting, as are the opportunities. The mechanics of battles with swords has been seriously worked out, now it will not work just to cover yourself with a shield — they will quickly kill you. Only active sword defense saves the day. The good news is that the character can be pumped without restrictions and create a «steel monster».

Pros

  • limitless locations with cleverly hidden secrets;
  • cool mechanics and challenging bosses;
  • design;
  • optimization.

Cons

  • network problems sometimes occur.

7. Borderlands 2

Find out the price

Three friends load their cannons and set off again for the profit. But picking up the profits is not so easy — they are claimed by monsters, crazy citizens and loitering zombies. The player has a choice of four characters, each of which has certain «goodies». As usual, it’s nice to be able to combine weapons, sometimes you can get great pleasure from the created explosion.

The creators have improved the multiplayer capabilities very well — the game really asks to be played with friends. You can create equipment and various items for the game. Pandora appears in all its splendor in a large number of locations.

Pros

  • hard to pass opponents;
  • the story has become more interesting;
  • enough humor.

Cons

  • It is extremely difficult to pass alone.

8.

Nioh 2

Find out the price

Japanese atmospheric action movie continues the tradition of dark doom yokai war. In the courtyard of the 15th century. Japan is engulfed in civil strife. A huge number of samurai sell their skill around the country. Hot, bloody fights happen often. In addition to earthly enemies, mystical creatures stand in the way of the war. Only a combination of the skill of a samurai and the use of eastern secret forces will bring victory over them.

A huge number of new wars compared to the first part. Bosses really are Bosses. They are huge, but very nimble. It is possible to fill them up only by sweating a lot.

We should modestly keep silent about the plot, but apparently the creators were very tired after making a brilliant picture. But walks in medieval Japan fascinate with the elaboration of details and landscapes.

Pros

  • unique combat system;
  • character leveling is 100% implemented;
  • nice national music game.

Cons

  • low dynamics;
  • repeated scenes.

Call for Price

We have to admit that Elder Scrolls V is really top. A project of such scale and elaboration has not yet appeared in the RPG family of games. Non-linear passage creates the impression of the reality of what is happening. You can talk about this game for an hour. Therefore, it is better to see once — be sure to install and pass!

Pros

  • fascinating story;
  • enemies;
  • action scenes;
  • locations and more.

Cons

  • no!

10. Ghost of Tsushima

Ask for price

Complete the top with this novelty. The Japanese theme for RPG games is perfect. The development of several games shows the interest of users. Therefore, developers invest heavily in games of this kind. But Ghost of Tsushima is a masterpiece.

The protagonist resists the Mongol invasion. Their fleet is heading to the island of Tsushima, and the survival of the nation depends only on the willpower of the protagonist.

The atmosphere of medieval Japan has been carefully created. The details are simply amazing. The open world allows the player to travel around the island in search of enemies. On the way the player will meet characters, helping which he will open new stories.

Pros

  • graphics;
  • plot;
  • characters;
  • combat dynamics.

Cons

  • the music is a bit annoying.

Divinity Original Sin 2 was the best classic RPG ever. The hero you choose at the very beginning will have to escape from prison. Further on his way he will meet partners.

Horizon Forbidden West

Weird West

Weird West is the newest RPG on this list.
