Rayman Legends Review — IGN
Rayman Legends

The most remarkable thing about Rayman Legends is how consistently it introduces new and unpredictable ideas over its roughly 12 hours. This beautifully animated co-op game tosses dozens of inventive ideas into the mix, proving there’s still room for exciting creativity in the platforming genre. Naturally, Rayman starts out with simple running, jumping, and punching, but before you know it you’re sneaking past dozens of deadly traps, battling huge bosses, or playing through awesome challenge levels that look like ’90s music videos. Every time I thought I found a personal favorite stage, the next one came along and replaced it.
Loading
I kept thinking the constant variety couldn’t possibly hold up, but surprisingly, each of Rayman Legends’ stages looks more impressive than the last. This sequel takes Rayman Origins’ colorful, animated look and feel in new directions. The beautiful transitions and clever bosses look stunning, expressive, and vibrant. A distinctly Loony Toons quality of the music and the adorable alien Teensies Rayman has to rescue give Legends character and personality to spare, even though there’s not much story here. I love its subtle and inventive visual tricks that hide dozens of crafty secret areas in plain sight, and since most levels don’t have time constraints, Legends gives us carte blanche to roam around to discover and appreciate secrets for ourselves.
Compared to most platformer characters, Rayman’s jump physics tend to feel a little floaty, but I got used to it and grew to love it quickly. The levels he runs through never feel frustrating thanks to some great pacing, and the variety of stealth puzzle areas, standard platformer challenges, and shoot-’em-up-inspired gliding stages constantly kept me on my toes and eager to see what came next. No matter what the challenge, they’re all brilliantly designed, and there’s an incredible feeling of satisfaction that comes from clearing each stage.
Boss fights are some of the highlights of Rayman Legends. They don’t reinvent the platforming boss battle, but these encounters show off some of the best visuals tricks, putting on a spectacular show. The Luchador, for example, is a towering mass of muscle who swings a huge hand and constantly launches his tiny opponents into the air. As I figured out his patterns and thumped him on the head, the reactions from the surrounding crowd sold the atmosphere of a big prizefight.
Amazing games like this one are always best when shared with friends or family, and almost every level feels finely tuned for both single-player and co-op. Things do get a bit chaotic when four players are jumping around at once – it’s easy to get confused about which character is yours, since everyone shares the same screen and a lot of the character skins look similar. To be fair though, no platformer has really solved this problem yet, and Rayman does it as well as any. The one thing that’s truly disappointing is that there’s no online play, which means that other than some online leaderboards and daily challenges, Rayman Legends is stranded as a couch co-op game.
The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Rayman Legends support co-op for four players, and the Wii U version adds in one more using the GamePad. It’s no secret that Rayman Legends was planned as a Wii U exclusive, and the Wii U GamePad works well with it to let one player take on an assistant role and help out the other four by activating switches in the environment. But Ubisoft came up with an elegant solution when it transitioned Legends to other platforms by letting Rayman command his flying encyclopedia assistant activate switches and levers using a single button.
Loading
On PS3 and 360, these puzzles require precise timing which makes it more difficult played in single-player, but I still found that to be a good challenge; it provides another interesting twist that gave me a fun level of control over the environment. It’s great that Ubisoft figured out how to make this co-op idea work in single-player, and that the frequent and well-placed checkpoints make sure it never feels frustrating.
On Wii U, this setup is a little different: If you’re playing single-player, at one point you switch to the perspective of the assistant, and gameplay moves to the GamePad screen in a hilarious transition. At that point, Legends takes advantage of the Wii U’s hardware to have you play a minigame in which you pull switches to manipulate the environment to try to keep a computer-controlled Sir Globrax alive in labyrinth-like stages.
Loading
The PS4, Xbox One, and PC versions of Rayman Legends look the same as the rest, except at a higher resolution. But I didn’t feel like this made a big difference in the visual quality, because Rayman’s strength is in its arts style rather than its technology. The only benefit here is reduced load times that quickly allow you to zip into a level of choice. The PS4 version has one additional feature: You can take screenshots and then pan and zoom using the Dual Shock 4’s touch pad.
It’s a good idea that’s a lot of fun in co-op, requiring careful teamwork and coordination, but in single-player it’s the most frustrating part of Rayman Legends. Simply put, they transform it from a great platformer into a frustrating escort mission. No matter how carefully I would clear a path for Sir Globrax, he still doesn’t always make good decisions. Sometimes he understands the trail you’re trying to set for him, and even occasionally shows some level of desire for self-preservation, but often he’ll go straight into a dangerous obstacle he could have avoided. Again, they’re great when played in co-op, but constantly losing because of AI stupidity beyond my control made me want to avoid those missions entirely in single-player.
No matter where I play it, though, Rayman Legends is a fantastic example of why platformers will never stop being fun. It got where it is by building on lessons that trace back to classic Nintendo-made platformers, such as Yoshi’s Island and Wario Land 4. Both games buck traditional genre trends and focused on exploration and discovery, and Rayman Legends takes the same approach and adds a consistent formula of smoothly increasing challenge, colorful presentation, and crazy variety that reminds me why I fell in love with this genre in the first place.
Rayman Legends is a delightful platformer, and one of the best I’ve ever played. Thanks to clever level design that toys with genre conventions, it gets incredible mileage out of four basic moves. And with great local co-op and dozens of unlockables – including stages from Rayman Origins, special character skins, and mini-games – there’s a lot to do. The difficulty is so smoothly balanced that it can be played with with kids or adult friends and still have a great time.

This edition of Rayman Legends offers almost everything the previous versions offered. And for fourty bucks this is a lot. The game looks fantastic and feels everything but old or obsolete. This is simply a must have for Switch owners.

In bringing the latest Rayman adventure to Switch, Ubisoft has given the machine easily one of its most visually stunning and enjoyable releases to date. Not quite living up to the moniker of Definitive Edition with increased loading times and performance hiccups, as well as a missing feature, Rayman Legends is still well worth the lower asking price to those yet to jump into Rayman’s world, yet outside of the portability aspect it offers little to entice series veterans.

There just isn’t enough here to justify warranting a purchase of Definitive Edition. It’s slightly worse than its prior counterparts (even forgoing the Wii U’s gameplay twist with Murfy and not letting another Switch user connect and play in that particular way), and the only truly new feature is the ability to play a tournament mode in the Kung Foot soccer minigame.

I’ve seen it on sale digitally for as low as $10. I found the controls to be sharper and more enjoyable than Mario Bro’s U Deluxe or Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. The overall platforming experience was top notch. It has a portion, maybe 10-15% of levels, designed with touch controls to be used specifically in handheld mode. It has great daily challenges, with leaderboards, where you can race against other players and your ghost. You can match up in 1 on 1 soccer games, as well. The value of this game is hard to beat. 10/10… Expand

Rayman 2 (cancelled prototype) — RayWiki, an encyclopedia of the Rayman universe
Originally, Rayman 2 was supposed to be a 2D game like its predecessor, from which the game was supposed to adopt the gameplay and style. This 2D game was to be released on the PlayStation and Sega Saturn.
The game was supposed to be more similar to the first part than the final version. The game would have adopted both the art style and gameplay of its predecessor, and would have added a couple of its goodies to the game. The game was supposed to have partially “mechanical” gameplay, which would make the game much easier compared to the first part, but at the same time, the game should have been full of puzzles, which, judging by the only level from this game, that we have as a bonus — The levels in the PlayStation version of the final game were filled with most of the levels.
nine0007
All characters were supposed to be without arms and legs like Rayman. Many characters from the first game, including Fairy Bettyla, would return in a new game that was also full of new characters, friends and foes.
Judging by the article of one of the gaming publications, the game was supposed to be released in the fall of 1996.
It is not known at what point in development the game was, at the time the creators of the game reviewed their ideas, but, most likely, the game has just begun to be developed, music has not even been written for it yet. Although, in one of the gaming magazines in an article dedicated to Rayman 2, it was said: “It (the game) is in a fairly advanced state — we are promised to provide a preview of the game next month.”
nine0007
When the developers saw the first Crash Bandicoot from Naughty Dog at E3 1996, they were afraid that they would not surprise anyone with a 2D game. Also, they were impressed with the new gameplay features in the 3D Platformer genre. This led to the cancellation of the 2D prototype and the development of a 3D game.

Gameplay
Rayman was supposed to start the game with all the abilities he got in the first part, and he was supposed to gain new abilities as the game progressed. Its telescoping fist was supposed to fly more freely, and with more inertia. By throwing a fist while jumping, it was even possible to make the fist make a circle around Rayman due to centrifugal force. Also, Rayman could punch through some surfaces to open caches. As in the final version, Rayman would have learned to swim. As the game progressed, Rayman had to meet new friends, some of whom followed him through some levels.
nine0007
Rayman would use various gadgets and mechanisms to progress through the game. These devices were a plunger mechanism (something like the plunger gun from Rayman Raving Rabbids.), a hook, a laser, and a «deflector» — a mechanism due to which Rayman’s fist began to bounce off the walls. Also, Rayman could ride and ride on various mechanisms and creatures, such as the Robot Dinosaur. (This idea was later used in the final game for the Shell Runner.)
Also, a new element in the gameplay of the game would be «cowardly» platforms — when Rayman approached, they immediately began to fly away from him. Hitting the platform with a fist forms an energy thread between it and Rayman, this thread attracts the platform to Rayman, and because of this, she cannot fly away from him. A new gameplay element was the ability to move between the background and foreground of the level. At the same time, if Rayman is in the foreground, and the enemies are in the background, then they are able to fire at the protagonist. Rayman could move between planes using a device similar to a shower stall with a toilet handle.
nine0007
A new gameplay addition was purple bombs that could be propelled by Rayman’s fist. These bombs explode on contact with Rayman and anything other than Ray’s flying fist.
Another new object is a flying machine with a huge arm. When Rayman strikes this arm, the flying fist bounces off of it in different directions.
Tings were supposed to return in the game, but they were supposed to be mechanical and silver. The figurines of life and the exclamation marks were supposed to return, as well as the red flying rings, which did not fall when contacted by Rayman, as in the first part.
nine0007
Plot
The plot of the canceled game was supposed to be similar to that of the final game. Mister Dark is defeated and left the Valley. Then, space pirates arrive from the depths of space, which Rayman must fight in order to free his friends, including Fairy Bettila, from metal monsters. The robots plan to turn the entire planet into a cold steel ball. The general was supposed to play a larger role in the plot than in the final version. It is believed that he was supposed to be the antagonist in place of Admiral Sharpbeard.
nine0007
Enemies
Many villains have been featured through many game publications, advertisements and one playable level. The enemies in the game were supposed to be robot invaders from outer space (Robot Pirates in the final version.). They are all Ray-like, with no arms or legs.
- Prototype Minion 800: Normal enemies. Unlike the final version, they were more similar to the General, they are orange-colored robotic soldiers. They hold musket-like cannons in their hands, from which they fire projectiles similar to those used by Space Mom to fight Rayman, her weapon being a laser rolling pin. nine0024
- Dinosaur Prototype Robot: Another enemy was supposed to look like a large steel dinosaur that breathed fire when approached. It can be saddled, then the Dinosaur will try to throw off Rayman, but he hits him on the head, forming a platform on which you can move for several seconds. There is a similar creature in the final version of the game.
- Flying Dinosaur Robot: A winged dinosaur robot whose 3D model was shown in the game’s trailer. Nothing more is known about him. nine0024
- Grenadier: Ray-like robot-like creatures with a crazy smile and several large, red bombs on their backs. They are all covered in soot from the explosions they produce, and they also have patches on their shoulders.
- Grasshopper: Green, Ray-like creatures that look like grasshoppers. These creatures could be participants in the invasion of robots, or simply enemies from the first part — moths.
- Pink Robot: A pink, yellow-eyed robot similar to the prototype Minion 800 and Dino Robot. We don’t know anything more about him. nine0024
- TRONCO XR28: A green robot wielding a chainsaw, somewhat similar to the prototype Minion 800. This robot could be a powerful enemy, even a boss.
- General: This formidable foe played a role in the plot of the Rayman 2 prototype, had a small role in the final version, as a salesman for the powerful Grolgoth robot to Admiral Sharpbeard. The General also appears in the first cutscene of Tonic Trouble. Judging by the trailer, in the 2D prototype of Rayman 2, he played the role of an evil character, possibly an antagonist. One of the artworks depicted a General standing on a ball ram hanging from a chain from the ceiling, telling something to a crowd of Pirate Robots. nine0024
- One who wears a monocle: a pale, smiling, vicious robot was shown in the trailer holding a small cage in its two prehensile fingers. We don’t know anything more about him.
PlayStation playable level
In the final version of the PlayStation game, the player can access one level of the canceled 2D prototype. You can get to the level by collecting 90% of all Lums, and passing the whole game (given that the PlayStation version of the game has only 800 Lums, then 90% is 720 Lums.). The level takes place in a grassy area, with strange rocks in the background, a purple sky, and the «Walk of Life» music playing in the background.
nine0007
After digging through the Rayman 2 disc files on the PlayStation, fans found the file responsible for the 2D level data, «RAY.inf», containing only French text:
///RayMan 2 PlayStation/version:01.12d/date:31 mai 1996/gravure:Vincent Greco/demande:equipe RM2 Sony/destinataire:equipe RM2 Sony/usage perso/derniere version/
It is not really known what this text means, only the name of Vincent Greco is known — the lead programmer of the first part, one of the programmers of Rayman M and Rayman 3. Judging by the fact that his name appeared in the game data, we can say that he participated in the development of this prototype.

The best way to enjoy a good movie or game is with friends. But here you need to select the appropriate titles so that everyone is interested. The DTF editors share their recommendations.
Artyom Slobodchikov: trash, waste and cocainum

Game: Rayman Legends
Before the release of Sonic Mania, the ideal Sonic game for me was, paradoxically, Rayman Legends. As a child, I thought that the blue hedgehog should only rush forward, and not gradually explore the level in search of secrets. Rayman Legends is the perfect high-speed platformer for the company.
Each level follows approximately the same scenario. Players, who control funny characters, rush forward past deliciously crazy scenery: the level can be a gothic cemetery, an underwater kingdom with spiked fish, or a mountain of sweets that you literally have to eat through. The tempo hardly breaks, as stops happen only on particularly difficult fragments or when someone needs to be resurrected. nine0007
Rayman Legends has great game design, music, style and responsive controls. There can be only one problem — towards the middle of the game it becomes very hardcore, so this is dubious entertainment for casual visitors to a house party. But for a well-coordinated company of players — the most it.
Movie: «Red Heat»
I have a universal recipe for great get-togethers. You will need: a significant amount of beer, dried or dried fish (it is better that it needs to be thoroughly cleaned before use) and newspapers. The table is covered with newspapers (this is important for the atmosphere), after which beer, a plate of fish and a laptop with «Red Heat» on the screen are placed on it. An hour and a half of great fun is guaranteed. nine0007
«Red Heat» is a great thrash metal with Arnold Schwarzenegger playing Soviet policeman Ivan Danko. The plot is absolutely unimportant: even if you remove all the clichés from the film, such as the obligatory death of a partner and the absurdly inadequate bosses, you can watch Schwarzenegger in an earflap among the snowdrifts and say the eternal phrase about cocainum endlessly.
If viewers with the appropriate background gather in front of the screen, about once every five minutes the company will be guaranteed to yell something like “Khulige-ena” or “Capitalism” or ask to rewind to phrases with a particularly crooked Russian obscenity. Truly a great movie. nine0007
Dmitry Muchkin: speed and explosions
Game: Speedrunners
Speedrunners is a fun platform game about superheroes who compete in speed. There are very few actions available in the game — run, jump, hook, power-ups and acceleration — so it’s easy to master. It is great for parties, because what is happening in it fits on one screen and is easy to read even in the midst of a match, and there is no complexity as such — only competition. nine0007
Some mechanics are made specifically so that you can annoy your opponents: you can hook another runner and send him far back, send homing missiles at him or throw a wooden box under your feet — indignant exclamations and laughter are guaranteed. True, sooner or later you get tired of concentrated races, and then you want to retrain as a spectator, so the larger the company, the longer the fun will last.
Cinema: Transformers
Transformers is a universal franchise. You can choose any part of the series, and it will turn out to be spectacular and bewitching enough, but at the same time stupid and vulgar, so that amazement is interspersed with bewilderment and laughter.
At the same time, everyone in the company can relate to films differently: visually, they are just so good that it would not be boring to watch, and the more the opinions of the audience differ, the more interesting. You can even have heated discussions right while watching, without fear of missing anything — anyway, in Transformers, the plot is not that important. nine0007
Vlad Babaev: fights and hangovers
Movie: The Hangover
In my opinion, the «Bachelor Party in Vegas» is the best suited for a large, especially male company. The story of four overage blockheads who went to have fun in the gambling capital of the United States perfectly conveys the drive of spontaneous drunken adventurism. Such a film can compensate for the adventurous nature of a twenty-year-old male body and protect him from injury from nightclub guests on a Saturday night. nine0007
For all its harshness, «The Hangover» does not slide into a vulgar farce, but at the same time contains many biting and venomous jokes. The mood of the whole picture is set by the hero of Zach Galifianakis — a charming fat man with a suspicion of schizophrenia, who, according to the classical scheme, always gets into trouble. His inner «beast» is balanced by the more reasonable character of Bradley Cooper, who, according to a well-known meme, does 99% of all the work.
The Hangover is a light yet energetic comedy. If there are still those in your company who have not watched the film, then I strongly recommend that you close this gap. nine0007
Game: Tekken Tag Tournament 2
Tekken Tag Tournament 2, despite its age, remains the main fighting game for our company. Nothing unites and at the same time sets people against each other like pair duels. Ambitions begin to play even brighter when two people are subjected to humiliation on the screen at once. And now alliances are already being formed among the comrades, the participants in the duel, rubbing their palms, are waiting for their turn and are eager for revenge for the previous shamefully lost match. nine0007
The game itself is conducive to tactical combat. Characters should be changed depending on their level of health and the accumulation of the Rage scale. In addition, most heroes do not have long-range strikes like Ryu’s hadouken from Street Fighter. This allows you to focus on close combat and distance, to pay more attention to melee combinations and counterattacks.
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was released in 2012 for previous generation consoles. Now it will be problematic to find a disc edition, but if you have a digital copy left in your library, then an evening of loud screams and quarreling friends is guaranteed. nine0007
Oleg Chimde: on the same sofa
Cinema: The Cabin in the Woods (and the films it parodies)
For some reason, we have been revisiting “The Hut” in recent years on the night of December 31 to January 1. I even somehow did not understand why it happened, but the fact is the fact.
This is a somewhat unique parody of slasher films, which does not roll into Scary Movie. It has its own interesting concept (which I won’t explain in case you haven’t watched it yet) and it’s a really smart and cool comedy. But it will be clear only to those who love the genre. nine0007
In general, slashers are great for watching in a company. You can play the game «who and when will die.» Heroes in slasher films always die in turn, and death is usually unpredictable, so after each death, viewers can place bets (you can bet on beer). Have fun, check it out.
Games: It’s You!, Injustice 2, Worms, Heroes 3
When choosing a game for a company, you should, of course, take into account all interests. From the one that will definitely suit everyone — «It’s you!», there even gamepads are not needed (but you must have a PS4). nine0007
But in general — fighting games, judging by my experience, are also suitable for everyone. We often play Injustice 2: it is, of course, difficult, but it is still quite friendly to beginners. You can «mesh» the buttons, and still something will work. Especially since everyone knows about superheroes now, and the latest Injustice looks very cool.
Worms (preferably Armageddon) is also great. It is not difficult to understand it, but for the sake of beginners, you still have to skate a few trial games.
Well, if you are going to «zadrotopati», then it would be nice to play in the third «Heroes». It is possible with laptops, it is possible hot-sits. One of the most sociable games I’ve ever seen, oddly enough.
Alexey Khromov: humorous documentary about Africa
Movie: «The Gods Must Be Crazy» part 1 and 2
Very strange films that few people have heard of. But in fact, this is almost the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. The first 15 minutes are only surprising — this is a documentary story about the life of African Bushmen. But then the plot becomes simple, ridiculous and incredibly fun. nine0007
It all starts with the pilot of a small plane throwing a Coke bottle out the window. Who would have thought that for a whole tribe it would become a subject of contention. And so Bushman Hiho goes to the ends of the earth to throw away the «evil thing.» And then there are other storylines about a teacher who came to the village, and a zoologist who breaks everything when meeting with women, poachers and even the revolution in Angola. Of course, at the very end, all this will intertwine in the most amusing way. nine0007
Watching «The Gods Must Be Crazy» with a large group is a pleasure: a simple plot that is hard to miss even if you get distracted, good nature shots and an incredible number of simple but very funny moments. And if you liked the first part, then you can immediately turn on the second. It is connected with the source code only by the place of action and the bushman Hiho, but in humor it is not inferior at all. There will be using your own legs instead of the landing gear of an airplane, stealing eggs from an ostrich, and traveling through the desert with a vicious animal hanging from a boot. It looks very easy and does not bother at all. nine0007
Danil Svechkov: lovers of the classics
Game: Hogs of War
I recommend to hit the nostalgia and play the ageless, but forgotten classic — Hogs of War 2000 release. Briefly described, these are three-dimensional Worms, where not worms, but pigs fight. If you describe in more detail, then the words, in general, will be the same, but with a whole paragraph talking about allusions to the First World War. Yes, the pig armies here are divided into countries that are dressed according to the military equipment of the early 20th century. nine0007
There are German pigs, there are American ones, all the main participants in the battles are in place, so this is almost a turn-based Battlefield 1, but about artiodactyls. The arsenal of weapons is appropriate, although there are exotics like jetpacks. The special charm of battles is that here you can hide in bunkers and control equipment — tanks, guns. And when throwing a gas grenade, the pig-fighter puts on a gas mask, although there is already a complete order with gas contamination — all the fighters from time to time, excuse me, puff. nine0007
Cinema: «The Man from the Boulevard des Capucines»
Classics of Soviet cinema. One day, Mr. Furst brought a movie projector to an average American Wild West town and started showing films. Cowboys, who previously knew only two ways of spending time — drinking and fighting — begin to look at the pictures of the Lumiere brothers and transform before their eyes. Now they drink milk instead of whiskey and try to be gentlemen towards each other. Even with the Indians, no one wants to fight anymore. An immortal and very funny movie about the creative power of art. nine0007
