This guide will explain the basics of how Dead Eye works in RDR2, how to upgrade its tiers and how to level it up, plus all the benefits of doing so. And let’s not forget that after you learn all of this, you may also need a few extra tips on how to properly use Dead Eye to draw the best advantage out of it!

Note: This article does not contain heavy story spoilers, but to be able to clearly explain what and how you earn or unlock, there are a few mentions of missions and/or places below.

As I wrote in my review of Red Dead Redemption 2 this game is a true masterpiece, but not all of its mechanics are new. The one this guide will take a closer look at is one of the core mechanics not only taken directly from the first Red Dead Redemption, but also a popular ability from several other video games from Rockstar.

The Dead Eye ability in RDR2 is intended to serve as an assistant, but if properly prepared, you can easily use it 100% of the time you are in combat and for every shot you fire against your enemies or targets.

What is Dead Eye and how it works in Red Dead Redemption 2

Dead Eye is the ability to slow down time while aiming and firing a gun. You learn it as you play through the tutorial of Red Dead Redemption 2. To use Dead Eye press the Caps Lock or Mouse Scroll on PC or the Right Analog Stick on Consoles while aiming. Based on the ability’s level you will be able to target multiple enemies or aim for specific body parts of your targets.

This gameplay mechanic transforms a simple shoot into a truly great experience. It can also be the difference between your survival and death. It can also help you complete your current mission with a gold medal instead of silver or bronze in some cases.

The ability starts you off simple and allows you to upgrade it into something truly amazing by completing. This is done by completing main missions or by completing various challenges and achievements.

As you play the game you can upgrade both Dead Eye’s Tier as well as its Level.

  • Dead Eye Tiers – unlock special new upgrades to this mechanic allowing you to be even better Gunslinger.
  • Dead Eye Levels – earn them to extend your character’s Dead Eye duration meter.

The next section of the guide will explain how this is done and what are the benefits to it.

How to Upgrade Dead Eye’s Tiers in Red Dead Redemption 2

Dead Eye in Red Dead Redemption 2 has five Tiers. You unlock them by completing specific missions from the game’s main storyline spread throughout the various chapters of the narrative.

There is no way to unlock a higher Dead Eye Tier unless you complete these missions. Below is a complete list of all Tiers and their benefits, plus when you get to unlock them.

Tier 1

  • Requirements to unlock: Chapter 1, Mission: Old Friends
  • Bonuses to Dead Eye: The first tier allows you to enter Dead Eye and target enemies automatically. At this tier you have no control over where and how the “X” markers are placed. You can only enter and exit Dead Eye at this point. Targeting is done automatically. And not ideal, of course.

Tier 2

  • Requirements to unlock: Chapter 2, Mission: Pouring Forth Oil IV
  • Bonuses to Dead Eye: Unlocking this tier will allow you to manually target enemies while in Dead Eye. This significantly improves your gameplay and allows you to do clear headshots much easier.

Tier 3

  • Requirements to unlock: Chapter 4, Mission: Urban Pleasures
  • Bonuses to Dead Eye: At this tier you will be able to remain in Dead Eye after you fire at your target without having them marked first. If you mark a target (place an “X”), you will exit Dead Eye after your character finishes shooting

Tier 4

  • Requirements to unlock: Chapter 5, Mission: Fleeting Joy
  • Bonuses to Dead Eye: This is where you become a true Gunslinger. Or hunter! Entering Dead Eye will now mark the heart and head areas of your enemy in sight.

Tier 5

  • Requirements to unlock: Chapter 6, Mission: Goodbye Dear Friend
  • Bonuses to Dead Eye: At the final fifth tier you will unlock everything Dead Eye has to offer. On top of all previous benefits from the first four tiers you will now also see the enemy’s lungs and stomach areas marked in red. You are ready to one-shot everything.

After completing the “Goodbye Dear Friend” mission in Chapter 6 you will have unlocked all five available tiers of Dead Eye and will be able to slow down time, remain in Dead Eye after you shoot a bullet without marking targets and see highlighted the deadly and critical internal organs areas of your enemies. Now all that is left is to upgrade Dead Eye’s Levels.

How to Level Up Dead Eye in Red Dead Redemption 2

Separately from the five Tiers explained above, you will also be able to level up your Dead Eye from level 1 to level 10. The benefits from each level are the increased duration of the ability.

Each one of the bars surrounding the Dead Eye icon on the image below represents one level. In this case I have upgraded my Dead Eye to level eight.

Leveling this ability happens through gameplay mostly. You can level up Dead Eye at any time, regardless of what your Dead Eye Tier you have unlocked and how far along in the story you are.

The first eight levels of Dead Eye can be unlocked normally by killing things, doing chores, crafting, cooking and so on. The additional two are earned by completing special achievements (more on that below).

Requirements for each level of Dead Eye

  • Level 1 – 0 XP, you start the game at this level
  • Level 2 – 50 XP
  • Level 3 – 100 XP
  • Level 4 – 200 XP
  • Level 5 – 350 XP
  • Level 6 – 550 XP
  • Level 7 – 800 XP
  • Level 8 – 1100 XP
  • Level 9 – Get one of the following Sets from the Trapper: Explorer, Herbalist or Survivalist
  • Level 10 – Get all three of the above-mentioned sets from the Trapper

It’s important to note that these are total XP target levels, not amounts of points for each level. This means that you need to earn a total amount of 1100 XP from Dead Eye related activities to upgrade it to level 8.

Each one of these three special sets (Explorer, Herbalist and Survivalist) can be found at a Trapper under the Reinforced Equipment section. The sets consist of four items each and cost you time, money and hunting to be able to obtain them.

Additional way to improve your Dead Eye is to obtain special perks such as Talismans and Trinkets. Their bonuses vary from increasing your Dead Eye XP earnings to decreasing the speed at which your Dead Eye bar depletes while you are using the ability.

How to earn XP to level up your Dead Eye

There are a number of activities that will reward you with Dead Eye XP, thus filling up the bar for this ability’s levels.

Here is a list of some of the activities you can do that earn you Dead Eye XP:

  • Killing enemies without Dead Eye, Cooking or Crafting – Grants 1 XP Point per action
  • Find items belonging to Collections or do Chores in camp – 5 XP Points per action
  • Skin or Pluck an Animal – the reward may vary from 1 to 10 XP Points per action, based on the animal type.
  • Complete the Explorer, Herbalist or Survivalist challenges – earns you 30 XP Points each. You need these for the Sets any way.

Cooking/Crafting is the easiest method to level up Dead Eye, but not the fastest. Hunting is more productive and useful.

Drinking Valerian Root will give you Dead Eye experience. It will not grant you faster progression through the Tiers, since they are locked behind certain main story missions and have nothing to do with XP.

How to use Dead Eye in RDR2

First, let’s go over the basics of how you actually use Dead Eye in combat, then we’ll move onto the more advanced tips and tricks. For this quick tutorial I will be using the shortcuts for the PC version, using keyboard and mouse.

Basic Tutorial on how to use Dead Eye in RDR2

Time needed: 1 minute.

Keybinds for Dead Eye in RDR2 and step-by-step tutorial on how to use the ability (video included):

  1. Entering Passive Dead Eye – Click on the Mouse Scroll or Caps Lock

Pressing either of these buttons allows you to enter Dead Eye mode, without spending its resource. Very useful when you are hunting or chasing something or someone. At this point the screen will brighten up and everything around will be slowed down.

  2. Entering Active Dead Eye – With your weapon out Press Right Mouse Button and press Mouse Scroll or Caps Lock

This combination will enter your character in what I call active Dead Eye. This is your Dead Eye stance for combat. While in it, you are spending your Dead Eye resource and the meter is depleting the longer you stay in it. When your cursor stands on a target, it will be red. Otherwise it’s white.

  3. Marking a designated target area on an enemy – Press X

While in active Dead Eye mode, press X to mark an area of your enemy where your character would shoot with the gun. Pressing the X button multiple times will make your character fire several shots in the same area. Very useful against Legendary Animals. In pretty much any other situation you should be able to one-shot kill your target.

  4. Shooting while in Dead Eye – Press the Left Mouse Button

Pressing the Left Mouse Button will allow your character to fire as many shots as the number of markers you have placed on your target(s). If you press directly the LMB during Dead Eye without marking, your character will shoot a single round. If your Dead Eye Tier is high enough, you will be able to stay in Dead Eye and continue shooting. Otherwise you will exit Dead Eye mode automatically.

Tips and Tricks for Dead Eye in RDR2

There are a few tips and tricks I would like to share with you based on my own ~100 hours of gameplay with Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC so far as well as some extensive research on the topic:

While in Dead Eye your character still takes damage. In the first game you were invincible, but that is not the case here, nor is it in Red Dead Online.

Dead Eye is the key to earning gold medals in certain missions that require you to do quick and/or precise shooting for headshots or other special activities.

If you place more than one mark on your target(s) during Dead Eye, your character will switch shooting position from high-shoulder to hip. Shooting from your hip allows you to fire your guns at a much faster pace, but is less precise.

If you duel a non professional gunslinger (a drunk idiot or a nobleman, who feels offended by what you may have said or done to him), you can shoot their gun out of their hands. You can do that outside of duels as well. It’s fun.

Placing a mark on your target does not mean you will always 100% hit that spot. If an object stands in the line of sight or your target suddenly moves for whatever reason (during Dead Eye), you may miss. This happened to me several times in my first attempts to shoot from cover. At one point I realized that this cover, while protecting me, it also stops some of my bullets some times.

You can use Dead Eye in RDR2 to see more clear in dark areas. This is extremely helpful when you are in a deep cave or dark house and cannot clearly see your enemies ahead.

There are two ways to refill the Dead Eye bar (or meter if you prefer). One way is by shooting without using Dead Eye. The other is to drink the various tonics available in the game. You can craft, buy or loot them.

I hope you have found my guide on how Dead Eye works in RDR2 useful. If you have any questions or want to add something you have learned from your own experience, please, leave a comment. Thanks!

Red Dead Redemption 2 Dead Eye tips — how to level up Dead Eye, auto target, critical shots, more

Red Dead Redemption 2’s Dead Eye mode lets you slow down time and pick off enemies with headshots and precise targeting — but it takes some upgrading and getting used to.

Dead Eye is best used in the heat of battle when you’re facing off against multiple foes, or when you’re on horseback and need to take down tenacious lawmen or random individual you don’t like the look of.

Watch on YouTube

To use Dead Eye, just click down on the right analogue stick while you’re aiming — this will slow down time and allow you to target enemies with a red X. Depending on what stage of Dead Eye you’ve unlocked, you can tag multiple enemies before firing, line-up headshots, and eventually pick out vital organs to blast. Once you’ve lined up the red X, pull the trigger to unleash a volley of deadly shots.

But first, you’ve got to earn all the upgrades.

How to level up Dead Eye

Dead Eye targeting levels up automatically as you progress through the main storyline, so it doesn’t require much extra effort on your part.

Level 1: This is start of Dead Eye, which you earn during Chapter 1‘s Old Friends mission. It allows you to slow down time and drag the red X target across an enemy. It auto targets the enemy for you and can be frustrating, as it doesn’t offer the precision you want. Be quick with your aiming though, and you can tag multiple enemies.

Level 2: This is where Dead Eye gets really useful. You can now manually tag a shot on an enemy by tapping the right bumper (R1/RB). Tag multiple enemies or just one unfortunate guy with six shots from your revolver and pull the trigger for spectacular results. This unlocks during Chapter 2 and the Pouring Forth Oil mission.

Level 3: This seems like an incremental upgrade but is more useful than it sounds. You can now stay in Dead Eye mode after you’ve fired shots, allowing you to pick off another target you may have missed, or just tag another bullet on an enemy as they go down. Unlocks during Banking, the Old American Art in Chapter 4.

Level 4: You’ll need to reach Chapter 5‘s Fleeting Joy mission to unlock this level of Dead Eye, but you can now see the highlighted head and hearts of enemies. Hit these and you’ll perform one-shot kills. This is when Dead Eye becomes really useful for hunting animals as it allows you to get a clean kill and harvest the best pelts.

Level 5: As well as the head and heart you can now target lungs and stomach, specifically. You’ll be getting a lot more one-shot kills and they become a lot easier.

This is also a perfect upgrade if you’re hunting the biggest Legendary Animals in Red Dead Redemption 2. A shot to the lungs may not kill a bison instantly, but it will slow it down and you can track it much more easily. This unlocks at Chapter 6, during the mission Goodbye, Dear Friend.

How to refill and upgrade Dead Eye

You can refill your Dead Eye meter by drinking tonics, sleeping and getting kills.

You can improve the amount of permanent Dead Eye bars on your Dead Eye meter by earning XP as you play. To earn Dead Eye XP you need to land headshots, kill enemies in free-aim, complete specific challenges related to weapons and shooting, as well as regular stuff such as skinning animals, crafting and cooking.

Also, keep an eye out for Valerian Root — this grants you an XP boost to reach the next level on the Dead Eye meter.

It is almost impossible to imagine the Wild West without guns, bandits and hot-tempered cowboys. With the help of weapons, most of the conflicts are really resolved here. No person, no problem. Going hunting without a weapon is also a pretty stupid idea. You will not be fed up with traps with bait and cunning traps alone. What should a person do if he shoots badly? Learn to aim better and train accuracy. This advice is valid in real life, and in Red Dead Redemption 2, bad shooters have a unique chance to save their own skin or get a delicious meal from a swiftly escaping victim. This chance is called Dead Eye.

An ability that Morgan has by default. Its effectiveness will grow along with the character as you progress through the story. It is difficult to do without Dead Eye when hunting agile and dangerous animals, during duels and gang wars, when the enemy crushes with numbers. There are five levels of ability in the game, which will be unlocked after completing certain missions. At first, Dead Eye will simply become a good help in skirmishes, and after that it will be difficult to do without it when hunting large predators or legendary animals. In the guide, we will analyze this ability from beginning to end.

The story of «Dead Eye»

Let’s start with the fact that «Dead Eye» is not quite the correct translation of the English name. «Dead Eye» literally translates as «Dead Eye», but for a Russian person, the adaptation «accurate» is more understandable. In fact, this is just a mode of slowing down time for a few seconds, which is enough for the player to aim at the target better. It can be used both in automatic and manual mode. Which mode is available to Morgan depends on the level of the ability.

Dead Eye is a skill with a long history. This feature of the game mechanics debuted in Red Dead Revolver, which was presented by Rockstar Games back in 2005. The first game in the Red Dead line in which even the main antagonist could use this ability.

In Red Dead Redemption, the sequel to Red Dead Redemption 2, Dead Eye has been redesigned. The ability had levels that could be obtained as you progressed through the story. At each new level, the skill got better and certain bonuses were added to it. Red Dead Redemption 2 «Dead Eye» was inherited in the same form in which it was used in the previous game in the series. To activate the ability, you must first select the victim, and then click on R3 / RS, depending on the console. Now you can safely aim and shoot. To release a couple of bullets, you need to press R2 / RT. Dead Eye is consumed, so you should not use it unless absolutely necessary. In another situation, when this skill is really vital for Morgan, his scale may be empty.

Dead Eye Upgrade

Dead Eye, health and stamina are the three stats that the player must upgrade. Morgan does not have a level gradation, that is, it is impossible to pump the main character, but he can and should become stronger, more resilient and accurate. Each of these characteristics has its own separate experience bar. The scale of the «Dead Eye», the capacity of which can be increased, is located next to the mini-map, highlighted in red. To go the game at 100%, you need to pump all three characteristics to the maximum. You can take on missions and not disdain even side quests, but this is not enough. There are also tests in the game, which, after passing, give certain bonuses. Here they are worth doing in their free time from shootings and gangster affairs. To upgrade Dead Eye, you need to focus on tests from the Bandit, Gambler, and Sharpshooter categories. We have already talked about them in detail in the full test guide. Completing each individual objective can earn Morgan 20-150 experience points to the ability, depending on the difficulty of the task. After Arthur «closes» all three categories of tests, he will receive a total of 1425 points.

Dead Eye is the hardest to level up. If for health and stamina it is enough to feed Morgan and regularly subject him to physical activity (rowing, jumping, swimming), then for Dead Eye you need to hunt, shoot, craft items and even cook food:

  • Morgan will receive +1 point for pumping items experience to the Dead Eye ability.
  • For each cooked dish, the scale will also increase by 1 point.
  • For an accurate headshot from a short distance (up to 50 m), you can remove from 1 to 5 experience points, depending on the distance separating the shooter and the victim.
  • Skinning the carcasses of slaughtered animals gives a minimum of 1 experience point, but you can get up to 10 points depending on the size of the prey. For a rabbit, for example, it is unlikely to get more than 1 point, but a bear or a deer will bring great progress.

Valerian Root Tincture, which temporarily increases the amount of experience gained, is another good help. Ready tonic can be found if you move northeast of Dewberry Creek. There the player will find an old, burnt shack, from which only the skeleton and walls are left, breathing hard. If you go down to the basement and carefully examine it, then in addition to the 50 dollars and a cigarette card hidden for a rainy day, you can also find a ready-made valerian root tincture there. We must not forget about such useful things as talismans and amulets. To use Dead Eye, the player will need a talisman from an alligator tooth, amulets from the eye of the legendary panther and owl feathers. To pump Dead Eye faster, you need to make an amulet from the fang of the legendary coyote. The item will increase the experience bonus of the ability by as much as 10%. It will be much easier to pump it with such a little thing in your inventory.

Dead Eye levels

There are five levels of Dead Eye in Red Dead Redemption 2:

  • The first level of the skill simply slows down time. The player gets access to the ability after completing the «Old Friends» quest at the very beginning of the game. Morgan wins precious seconds that could cost him his life. Time slows down, and the target is marked with crosses in automatic mode. After the points for execution are set, the player will only have to click on the fire button (R2 / RT) and exit the «Dead Eye» mode. Shooting will begin, and opponents will be defeated. Accuracy at this level leaves much to be desired. Automation hinders rather than helps the player, so it can be called «accurate» with a big stretch.
  • The second level gives a little more options. It opens in the second chapter right after Arthur completes the mission «Let the Oil Spill». Now one or more targets can be manually marked for aiming. This allows you to increase the accuracy of shooting. To place labels yourself, you need to press R1.
  • The third level allows you to remain in Dead Eye mode even after the shots are fired, but otherwise there are no differences with the second level. This feature allows you to finish off still living opponents who went unnoticed at the very beginning of the firefight. The third level becomes available in the fourth chapter after completing the mission «Banking, Old Art».
  • The fourth level is unlocked after completing the «Fleeting Joy» quest in the fifth chapter. Now, in Dead Eye mode, vulnerable points on the enemy’s body are highlighted — the head and heart. This upgrade will come in handy for Morgan on the hunt. With the help of the ability, you can now quickly kill large predators with one shot, and after skinning, get the highest quality hides.
  • The fifth level differs from the fourth only in that now not only the heart and head are highlighted, but also the lungs and stomach. This will also be useful on the hunt, especially if Arthur is going to go after a large legendary beast. Of course, a shot in the lung will not kill a bear or a wild boar, but a seriously wounded animal will lose speed, which will allow the character to track him down / catch up / finish him off faster. The level will open immediately after completing the mission «Farewell, dear friend» in the sixth chapter. Complete Guide to Legendary Animals

Interestingly, some players are mistaken about the number of marks, supposedly you can put as many marks as you like, and then shoot a bunch after all. Actually it is not. You can put exactly as many marks as there are rounds of ammunition at Morgan’s disposal. As mentioned above, the ability is depleted as you use it. The player can restore it. To do this quickly, Morgan needs to use either a miracle tonic or chewing tobacco, which have a «healing» effect on his body and abilities. Tobacco is always better to have with you. It is sold from merchants, but more often it can be found in the pockets of corpses, since almost all bandits carry this «delicacy» with them.

This method is also free of charge. In addition, the character can be sent to sleep or shoot as many opponents as possible in normal mode, the scale will gradually recover. Some players consider the transition from automatic to manual mode not progress, but degradation. In fact, the developers have thought of everything very carefully. In automatic mode (especially when there are many targets), the ammo consumption increases, and the accuracy of the shots is very lame. As we remember, in the game, cartridges, although they are considered consumables, are not cheap. Arthur has to get ammunition, including rummaging through the corpses of enemies.

Manual mode allows you to save ammo, which is useful for Morgan, because the player independently selects targets and can mark the most vulnerable points on the bodies of enemies and animals, that is, he has the ability to kill with one shot. In addition, the manual mode allows you to use the ability more efficiently, since Arthur outperforms automation in terms of accuracy, which mainly distributes shots to the limbs of opponents.

Dead Eye allows you to instantly reload your weapon. This is a little game trick. If the player needs to shoot urgently, and there is no time to reload, then simply activating the ability is enough. He will have a full clip at his disposal.
