Review: Rayman Mini – Destructoid
Rayman is one of those series that I’m glad never died.
So many mascot platformers were unceremoniously killed off (seriously, where’s my Jersey Devil and Aero the Acro-Bat remasters?), but Rayman endured, even with new management. Origins, Legends, and even the mobile runners like Jungle and Fiesta were worth playing, and Mini is the latest attempt for the little guy to make yet another comeback.

It seems passé to tack yet another “runner” (but not endless!) to the Apple Arcade launch when we’ve seen so many of them in the past, but Ubisoft manages to exercise restraint here when coupled with the “full game without microtransactions” mantra of the Arcade itself.
Full stop, this is ostensibly a platformer where the protagonist just so happens to automatically run. Just like past Rayman mobile games, the art style perfected in Legends translates well to a smaller screen, as Ubisoft has managed to wring out every nuance on top of all of the color that this universe brings.
Best of all, there’s full controller support now. In an instant, you can connect a PS4 or Xbox One remote to your iOS device and have at it with precision, or opt for the already fine touch scheme that uses quadrants of the screen to jump and slap. I really dig how there’s a seamless swap between the control methods if you so choose (I found myself changing things up every few levels), as not every Apple Arcade game supports that: this is how it’s done.
Although Rayman has run before, the whole “mini” angle (in which he and his friends are shrunk down to size) is enough of a gimmick to carry a full sequel.
Although it’s very easy to forget the scale for a number of stages, the development team mixes enough surprises in to keep you guessing and remind you that yes, you are very small indeed. This does mean that sometimes, it’s an excuse to throw more hazards into the mix to compensate and add a grander sense of scale (which leads to a sparing sense of trial and error).
That said, it also opens up the level design a bit with optional paths, all of which lead to a higher score, more costumes, and a 100% completion rate. The runner formula is on full display here, including the frustration involved when you have to redo an entire level just to practice a tough sequence, but that comes with the territory (in one section I had issues with an enemy that you naturally feel inclined to dive bomb into, but falling into them led to more air to clear a gap).
Rayman Mini is yet another successful foray into the mobile arena for the series, and best of all, it isn’t muddled by microtransactions.
It’s sad this isn’t the norm, right? I can’t stress enough how much cleaner the whole subseries is without IAP (in-app-purchases), to the point where it feels more in line with Rayman proper.

Rayman 3 is a game from a time when Ubisoft didn’t tarnish its reputation with an endless Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry pipeline.
A time when studios under the wing of a French publisher could create not just super-popular franchises, but also something smaller: fun and diverse. A time when Michel Ancel, the creator of Rayman, could create, and not grind out a sequel to Beyond Good and Evil, and then rush out of the company for vague reasons. The place of game designer instead of Ansel was taken by another Michel, but Janod, and the creator of Rayman himself, at that time was preparing to release one of his masterpieces — Beyond Good and Evil.
Monsieur Jeanod’s task was to at least not disgrace Ansel’s legacy and to surpass it at the maximum. Managed? Now I’ll tell you.

To be honest, I was intrigued and a little tense, because my mother, then and now, does not understand the gaming industry from the word at all and herself played «bulbulator and self-garden».
However, when she showed me the disc with Rayman 3 I was pleasantly surprised. On the cover, obviously Rayman himself flaunted, and on his hands there were some kind of chains and a look so bold, confident. In general, the cover immediately told me that something cool was waiting for me.

The game begins with a peaceful scene. Rayman and Globox are sleeping snoring and nothing could disturb this idyll. However, a good night is interrupted by a black «zlum» named Andre, who attacked the peaceful pink «lums», enslaving them and turning them into their own kind.
The flying toad (fly?) Murphy tries to wake up the heroes and, in a fit of panic, Globox accidentally tears off Rayman’s hands, and Murphy is forced to grab the winner of the pirates by the hair and take him to hell. nine0003
Flying over the forest, we see how zlums everywhere instill fear and terrorize the population, and some, especially daring ones, even try to shoot at Murphy and Rayman. The heroes still manage to escape and from that moment the game begins.
Murphy explains to the hero how the multiplier and score counter work, information about which he took from the game manual. The fourth wall has been successfully broken. Time he time he comments on what is written in the manual, and he sometimes even answers him.
As a child, I did not pay attention to such scenes, but now I scream wildly from these scenes. In addition, the name of the main villain (Andre) and Rayman and the player will also learn thanks to Murphy’s manual. And at the end of the first level, Toad says that we will see each other in Rayman 4 (ಥ﹏ಥ).

Having reunited with the Globox, Rayman’s hands also return. As you already understood, Rayman’s head, feet and hands are hanging in the air and are not directly attached to the hero’s body.
The reason for this decision was that it was difficult and time consuming to animate full-fledged arms, legs and neck. But in the end, we have a memorable design that is also applied in game design. For example, in a couple of moments, Rayman gets into his boot and tries to catch another.

The combat system is primitive to the point of disgrace. Therefore, Rayman 3 (and the sequel too) is much more of a platformer with bitmap elements than vice versa.
During the journey, Rayman receives power-ups that serve two purposes — help to overcome impassable parts of the levels and serve as a help in battle. With chains, for example, he can shock enemies and grab hooks to cross large chasms, while spiked gloves break through wooden doors and help defeat heavily armored enemies. nine0003

As Rayman makes his way through the levels, he accumulates points that allow him to open local mini-games. Among the available ones there is a simple tower-defence and tennis, and even a shooting range from the first person.
But I would especially like to note the levels that… Just take a look at this trip for yourself (but what music!):
In addition to progressing through the levels in order to deliver the Globox to one of the doctors, Rayman rescues tinzi (nosed ones) captured by zlums.

There are many bosses and they are varied. In the first such fight, you need to activate three buttons and use a rocket launcher to knock out the boss hanging on iron stilts, and then start controlling them yourself and flatten the enemies. This section would not be here if not for one unpleasant bug that I encountered.
If during your visit to the last level 10 (Tower of Leptis) you decide that you want to collect more tinzi from previous levels and go back, you will no longer be able to get back to the Tower. Why? Because. The game just won’t load the last level. On the Internet they write that this problem is almost 20 years old and it has not been fixed even in the HD re-release. Because of this, I had to restart the game.
