What PUBG Mobile’s Replacement in China, Game for Peace, Means for the Chinese Games Market

PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds (PUBG) has enjoyed great success with its mobile version. In an unexpected twist last week, Tencent, the game’s publisher in China, has pulled PUBG Mobile from China’s app stores, replacing it with a new game called Game for Peace. The new title is less violent, more child-friendly, and—most importantly—compliant with the Chinese Government’s regulations on video games. In this article, we delve into the situation, giving our take on what happened, why it happened, and some of the future implications for China’s games market.  

Why Did Tencent Adapt PUBG Mobile into Game for Peace?

Last week, Tencent—the world’s #1 public game company by revenues—shut down PUBG Mobile in China. The game is one of the country’s most popular mobile games by monthly active users (MAUs), but did not receive approval to monetize and was therefore stuck in a “beta-testing” phase. It was replaced by Game for Peace. Not only was this new game developed by the studio behind PUBG Mobile, but the gameplay and graphics are essentially identical. Character progression even carries over from PUBG Mobile, with data automatically transferring to the new game.

However, Game for Peace has some key differences to PUBG Mobile—each one making the new title less violent. For example, unlike PUBG Mobile, Game for Peace features no blood, and opponents do not ”die” when they are defeated; rather, they comically wave goodbye before disappearing into thin air. Also unlike PUBG Mobile, Game for Peace players receive a notification when they are one of the five remaining players, giving them the option to leave the game immediately. While these changes seem minimal on the surface, they led to a vital outcome for Tencent: Game for Peace received a license from the Chinese Government, allowing Tencent to monetize players, whereas PUBG Mobile did not receive a license. 

The main reason Tencent shut down PUBG Mobile was because China’s State Administration of Press and Publication never approved the game for monetization. But given PUBG Mobile’s high operating costs, Tencent apparently decided that waiting for the game to receive approval was not the best strategy—especially given the long list of games on the waiting list. Instead, Tencent released Game for Peace to break the deadlock.  

Tencent’s Multimillion-Dollar Opportunity: Why Is Game for Peace So Important?

Last year was one of the most taxing times for Chinese games companies. The nine-month-long licensing freeze impacted the entire market, including the biggest players. In 2018, Tencent’s game revenue growth was the lowest in four years. Therefore, the company is doing everything it can to offset the fallout of the licensing halt, aiming to regain the revenue growth lost throughout 2018. 

Tencent hopes to achieve this goal by monetizing Game for Peace on the back of the huge popularity of PUBG Mobile. Honor of Kings, Tencent’s mobile MOBA game, has been the #1 top-grossing game in China for months, giving the tech giant a stable, dependable source of revenues. Although Honor of Kings had more than 140 million MAUs in March, the number of MAUs has been steadily decreasing since launch.

Back in October 2018, PUBG Mobile’s MAUs exceeded Honor of Kings’ MAUs, and it continued to outpace Honor of Kings from Oct 2018 to March 2019, (with the exception of Jan 2019). Needless to say, if PUBG were monetized during this time, it would have had a profound effect on Tencent’s revenues.

Tencent’s overall strategy is to convert as many PUBG Mobile MAUs as possible into Game for Peace MAUs. As things stand, the future looks bright for Game for Peace, with monetization already commencing on the game’s launch day. We foresee an initial spike in revenues. However, the genre is getting very crowded, with several competitors from other publishers such as NetEase, and a mobile version of Apex Legends on its way.

The Impact of China’s New Licensing Regulations is Becoming Clear

Game for Peace’s design changes reflect a major challenge faced by most publishers in China. Publishers can only monetize games that have been approved, so companies are doing everything in their power to abide by the National Radio and Television Administration’s regulations. Game of Peace’s changes abide by these rules, but the game’s setting is also unlike any previous battle royale titles. The game bypasses a real-life grisly environment for a less threatening setting. Game for Peace is set entirely in a military training simulation with the China Air Force. It also features positive and inspiring quotes within the environment.

As China’s—and indeed the world’s—biggest publisher, Tencent has strived to follow the Chinese Government’s regulations. Recently, the company has begun promoting the ‘’16+ system’’, which aims to protect children under the age of 16 from potential video game addiction. Game for Peace is Tencent’s first game under the ‘’16+ system’’, as the company remains determined to be a frontrunner in adhering to the Chinese Government’s idea of safe and peaceful gaming. We expect other companies active in China’s games market to follow suit.

PUBG is the abbreviated name of the game (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds) or (PUBG), which took top places in the ratings and scored a record number of players. Game PUBG (Battleground) — online multiplayer shooter in the mode «every man for himself» or «royal battle». Surviving to the very end will not be easy, because the further the battle goes, the stronger and smarter the remaining opponents will be. At the end of each battle, players receive in-game currency that can be freely spent on various upgrades, weapons, clothing, and other bonuses.

Immediately after landing on the ground, look for weapons and ammunition. Look around to not let any enemy close to you. Having found weapons with weapons, you will already be able to defend and fight
with the first enemies that come across on your way. Run around the map and look for buildings with a favorable location and a good view. Watch out for enemies from windows and shoot anyone you see. Better to kill first than be killed!

Pairing a Bluetooth mouse or trackpad with an iPad

Preparing

To connect a Bluetooth accessory to iPad, iPadOS 13.4 or later is required. These OS versions support the following iPad models:

• iPad Pro (all models)
• iPad Air 2 or later

• iPad (5th generation) or later
• iPad mini 4 or later

Connecting a Bluetooth mouse or trackpad to iPad

1. Turn on your Bluetooth accessory and bring it near your iPad.
2. Put the accessory into pairing or discovery mode.
   • Apple Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad should be ready to pair.
   • If you are pairing with a third-party accessory that has been previously used with another device, follow the accessory manufacturer’s instructions.
3. On an iPad, open the Settings app.
4. Press Bluetooth.
5. Find the desired Bluetooth accessory under Other Devices and tap its name to pair with your iPad.

Additional steps may be required depending on the accessory being connected. Follow the instructions on the screen. If you’re pairing with an Apple Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad and require a code, enter 0000 (four zeros).

If you receive a connection warning

When using a Bluetooth mouse or trackpad with an iPad, you may see the warning «Use of this accessory may affect your Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth connection. »

Wireless interference may occur when using Bluetooth accessories with some iPad models. The more Bluetooth accessories you have connected to iPad and in use, the more likely you are to experience wireless performance issues.

If you are experiencing connection problems, try disconnecting any Bluetooth accessories you are not using. In Settings > Bluetooth, tap the info button next to the accessory name, then tap Disable.

Reconnect, disconnect or remove a Bluetooth accessory from the list of available

After pairing with iPad for the first time, the accessory will appear in the My Devices section of the Settings > Bluetooth menu. To reconnect a disconnected accessory to iPad, tap its name.

To disable or remove an accessory from the list available on iPad (forget it), tap the information button next to its name.
