Ps4 souls like: Best PS Plus Souls-Like Games

13 Best Soulslike Games, Ranked

When Demon’s Souls launched on the PlayStation 3 back in 2009, it gained a cult following in the West after Sony refused to publish it in the West. It was left to Bandai Namco and Atlus to get FromSoftware’s sleeper hit to European and US shores respectively. However, it was the spiritual follow-up of the Dark Souls trilogy that gave rise to the Soulslike/Soulsborne sub-genre that has been implemented so effectively by other studios too.RELATED: Elden Ring: Best Character DesignsAs a result, many developers try to put their own spin on the genre. The Nioh series, for example, is the most popular in the genre next to Dark Souls with its marriage of Ninja Gaiden’s speed and the additive loop of a Souls game. However, there are other similar Soulslikes that were comparatively overlooked or underappreciated and deserve to be played by fans of the sub-genre.Updated on April 4, 2022, by Michael Llewellyn: The Souls sub-genre has been given a popularity boost once again thanks to the release of FromSoft’s spiritual successor to the Dark Souls series Elden Ring. Even though the game has only been out a few weeks, there are already multiple Platinum and 1000-point scored Achievements being registered by veterans of the series. It’s also thanks to Elden Ring that fans of the Souls series are seeking out similar games in the sub-genre. With that in mind, this list is being updated with overlooked and underrated Soulslike games that need the attention of fans. Moreover, these ranked Soulslike titles should scratch the Elden Ring itch until any expanded content for FromSoft’s magnum opus hits the stores.

13 Stranger Of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins

  • Released:
    2022

  • Platform:
PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S

  • Developer:
    Team Ninja

Developed by the same studio behind the Nioh series, Stranger of Paradise is an action RPG that mixes Devil May Cry-style action with the Dark Souls formula. It serves as a prequel (of sorts) to the very first Final Fantasy game.

The voice acting is a bit over the top at times, but it’s endearing in an early ’90s Saturday morning cartoon kind of way. There is a ton of fanservice and lore for fans of the Final Fantasy series with lots of familiar monsters and creatures from the series. There are even allusions to past mainline Final Fantasy series fans to spot, and the Soulslike combat is challenging and deep enough to satisfy that thirst for a modern Soulslike title.

12 Hellpoint

  • Released:
    2020

  • Platform:
PS4, Xbox One, PC, macOS, and Linux

  • Developer:
    Cradle Games

Released in 2020, Hellpoint is an indie-developed Soulslike that didn’t set the reviews alight upon its release. Unfortunately, this was due to the game launching with some game-breaking bugs that couldn’t be overlooked.

Thankfully, the developers at Cradle Games worked hard to give its fans a smoother experience. Hellpoint is a science fiction horror fantasy that’s as foreboding as it is interesting. Atmospherically, it has a lot in common with Dead Space. This, combined with a Soulslike experience, makes for a tense and often jump out of your seat experience.

11 The Surge

  • Released:
    2017

  • Platform:
    PC, PS4, and Xbox One

  • Developer:
    Deck 13 Interactive

Released in 2017, The Surge is a near-apocalyptic science fiction Soulslike developed by the same team that created Lords of the Fallen. It has an excellent sense of level design and a solid amount of world-building that will satisfy fans of the Souls series.

The real star of the show, however, is The Surge’s combat system. It’s weighty, impactful, and brutal. It allows for limb-targeted attacks and finishers where the protagonist can take their opponents down piece by piece. The fighting system is arguably more weighty than the FromSoft’s Soulslike series and has a sense of brutality that’s only bettered by its sequel.

10 Ashen

  • Released:
    2018

  • Platform:
PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.

  • Developer:
    A44

Released in 2018, Ashen is a game that borrows heavily from the Soulslike formula. However, this doesn’t just extend to the game’s combat and difficulty, but the way the story ominously reveals itself the deeper you get into it.

The visuals aren’t up there with FromSoft’s games and the art design won’t be loved by everyone, but for many, this simply adds to the experience and the atmosphere. More importantly, Ashen feeds that desire to explore and discover more of its world and meet its challenges until you succeed.

9 Eldest Souls

  • Released:
    2021

  • Platform:
    PC,

PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

  • Developer:
    Fallen Flag Studios

Released in 2021, one would be forgiven if they assumed that Eldest Souls is a spin-off set in the Dark Souls Universe. The obvious allusion to its inspiration aside, Eldest Souls is very much its own game.

RELATED: Elden Ring: Every Great Rune, Ranked

It’s a 2D isometric action RPG that was well-received by critics but overlooked by mainstream fans of the genre. Despite the technical differences, Eldest Souls is a beautiful game with an atmosphere that feels unique and packed with thrilling and difficult boss battles making it one of the best Soulslike games available.

8 Morbid: The Seven Acolytes

  • Released:
    2020

  • Platform:
Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One

  • Developer:
    Still Running

If there is one Soulslike game that manages to build a more terrifying world than FromSoft’s Bloodborne it’s Still Running’s Morbid: The Seven Acolytes. Set in a Steampunk world its grotesque themes meld H.P. Lovecraft and David Cronenberg.

Visually, it uses a stunning 2D HD 16-Bit style that conveys the sense of danger and an environment one would expect from a Soulslike. Additionally, the gameplay is tough but fair and features some excellent storytelling.

7 ZombiU

  • Released:
    2012

  • Platform:
PC, PS4, Wii U, and Xbox One

  • Developer:
    Ubisoft

Originally released as a launch exclusive for the Nintendo Wii U in 2012, ZombiU didn’t get the attention it deserved. It was ported a few years later for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One, but it’s the Nintendo version that remains the best because of how well it implemented the Wii U controls.

ZombiU is first-person survival horror that melds elements of the Soulslike and the roguelike genre. Every time your character dies, you will step into the shoes of a new survivor to continue the mission. Instead of collecting souls, however, the new survivor will collect their former avatar’s backpack/loot. However, in doing so, they’ll encounter their previous avatar as a member of the walking dead. It’s a unique spin on the genre, and if you’re a fan of Elden Ring/Dark Souls, then this is a criminally overlooked title that deserves another look.

6 Dragon’s Dogma

  • Released:
    2012

  • Platform:
PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One

  • Developer:
    Capcom

As an action RPG, Dragon’s Dogma is probably the least Soulslike game on this list. Released in 2012 Capcom’s cult hit put its own spin on the open-world dungeon-crawling RPG and created something unique.

The combat system shares a lot in common with Dark Souls, but its fighting system arguably has more weight. It has a robust class system where one can lose themselves for hours thanks to its depth. There’s no PVP or multiplayer to speak, but gamers across the world can create and share their own warriors, known as pawns, with other players for rewards.

5 Mortal Shell

  • Released:
    2020

  • Platform: PC,
PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

  • Developer:
    Cold Symmetry

Released in 2020, Mortal Shell is an indie-developed Soulslike from the studio Cold Symmetry. It’s a visually stunning experience that manages to bring its own unique spin on the Souls sub-genre. It’s a shorter game than the Dark Souls entries, but it offers a ton of replay value with its unique play styles that are dependent on the «shell» the character has selected.

RELATED: Elden Ring: Easy Early Game Bosses To Help Build Your Confidence

At first glance, it looks very similar to the Dark Souls series, but it has a distinct art style and a lot of lore that is capable of drawing in even the most seasoned Souls fan. In addition, the soundtrack that switches from haunting melodies to pulse-pounding heavy metal is fantastic.

4 Titan Souls

  • Released:
    2015

  • Platform:
Android, OS X, PC, PS4, and PS Vita.

  • Developer:
    Acid Nerve

Another game that wears its influence like a badge of honor is Titan Souls. Despite having no relation to FromSoft’s titles, it’s one of the best Soulslikes available. In addition to Dark Souls, it’s a top-down 2D action RPG that’s very reminiscent of the classic Legend of Zelda series too.

Artistically, Titan Souls is a stunning indie title with a massive world full of secrets to discover. The boss fights are some of the best in the genre and more importantly, for Souls fans, there is a ton of replay value.

3 Lords Of The Fallen

  • Released:
    2014

  • Platform:
Android, iOS, PC, PS4, and Xbox One

  • Developer:
    Deck 13 Interactive

Released in 2014, Deck 13’s Lords of the Fallen was an overlooked and underrated Dark Souls clone that deserved more recognition. Despite the obvious similarities on a visual level, the combat system in Lords of the Fallen is amazing with every hit feeling like it has real weight. It’s also a lot of fun being able to hack and slash away hitting powerful combos.

It also features a storyline and characters to interact with that rival even Dark Souls’ creepy cast. While the world-building doesn’t quite match that of the Souls series, its lore and story still build an interesting and foreboding world begging to be explored.

2 Code Vein

  • Released:
    2019

  • Platform:
    PC, PS4, and Xbox One

  • Developer:
    Bandai Namco Studios

Released in 2019, Code Vein is an action RPG that blends elements of both God Eater and the Dark Souls series. Considered by many to be an «anime Dark Souls,» Code Vein is a more accessible title that can work as a great introductory title for those looking to get into the Souls sub-genre.

It’s still a very challenging game, but there is just as much focus on the game’s story and characters. It has a deep character creation system and brings enough of its own ingredients to mix up the Soulslike formula to make it stand out from the crowd.

1 The Surge 2

  • Released:
    2019

  • Platform:
    PC,

    PS4, Xbox One

  • Developer:
    Deck 13 Interactive

Released in 2019, The Surge 2 is Deck 13’s third Soulslike game. Even though its predecessors are excellent in their own right, the number three proved to be a charm with the studio’s latest. The science-fiction world is more open than its predecessor and will appeal if you’re a fan of Elden Ring’s approach to freedom.

The biggest star of the show is The Surge 2’s combat system. It once again includes the limb targeting system for brutal finishers, but there is a more technical approach to the fighting. Timing counters and deflections are reminiscent of For Honor. Furthermore, the science fiction-inspired boss fights are the kind of challenging spectacles one would expect from the genre.
