2020 Year in Review Part I: Cyberpunk, Fall Guys, Tony Hawk, Hades, FFVII Remake, and more

After a previous report claimed that

The Outer Worlds would not receive any enhancements on PS4 Pro, the game’s publisher has issued a clarification.

While PC and Xbox One X are the only platforms that will run The Outer Worlds in native 4K resolution, the game will upscale to 4K on PS4 Pro from a native resolution of 1440p.

“It looks great across all platforms,” game publisher Private Division adds in a tweet addressing the initial report.

The @OuterWorlds is enhanced for both Xbox One X and PS4 Pro. It includes 4K textures and resolution on Xbox One X and PC, and upsamples to 4K from 1440p on PS4 Pro. It looks great across all platforms and we’re excited for players to experience The Outer Worlds on October 25th.

— Private Division (@PrivateDivision) October 16, 2019

Game Freaks 365 reached out to the publisher for independent confirmation yesterday. We were pointed to the company’s tweet this afternoon. The original report came from the PC and Xbox-focused website Windows Central.

The Outer Worlds launches across PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 25.

Dynasty Warriors 9 PS4 Pro Uses Geometry Rendering To Upscale To 4K

  • News

Geometry Rendering is to be used instead of the popular Checkerboard Rendering technique.

While recent reports said that Dynasty Warriors 9 would use checkerboard rendering to reach 4K resolution on PlayStation 4 Pro, Tech Koei has come back to Wccftech on that and reconfirmed how the PlayStation 4 Pro was working its magic. The secret for this one is Geometry Rendering, which is quite different from Checkerboard.

Geometry Rendring is, as simply as it can be put, a post-process technique which takes a 1080P render and brings depth values up to an equivalent 4K buffer. The end result is that the image is, by pixel counting actually in 4K, but with some missing data filled in to make it work. It’s less demanding than the popular Checkerboard Rendering, but also not as stunning, which is why it’s not used nearly as much.

For those keeping score at home, the Xbox One X version of the game upscales from 1440P to 4K. Dynasty Warriors 9 is set to be a mechanical reboot of the series, opening it up significantly. You can learn everything you wanted to know about Dynasty Warriors 9 right here.

Some games run smoother on base PS4 than on Pro

Journalists have found a similar situation with smoother games on a regular PS4 in the case of Mantis Burn Racing, re-releases of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Last of Us. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is a mixed bag, with some scenes running at noticeably slower frame rates, while others are more stable than the original PS4. Curiously, PS4 Pro owners cannot make these games run smoother: on 1080p displays, the picture is simply qualitatively scaled down from a higher resolution.

Of course, the example of the re-release of The Last of Us by Naughty Dog is especially surprising, because we are talking about a Sony exclusive from an internal studio. The team not only has a reputation for great developers, but is also known for their outstanding optimization skills, making their games look better than most titles of their generation. That being said, The Last of Us is a great PS4 Pro port and one of the best implementations of HDR support. Players get the choice of either 3200×1800 pixels at 60fps or native 4K at 30fps. Interestingly, unlike other projects (where the negative effect usually only affects some scenes), The Last of Us almost always shows a lower frame rate on the Pro compared to the regular PS4.

Of course, minus 2-5 frames per second in high performance mode is a small loss, but when it comes to PS4 Pro, it’s wrong to discuss trade-offs compared to the base PS4. It makes sense that all PS4 Pro games run at the same or higher frame rates as the regular PS4, regardless of the resolution increase or other graphical enhancements.

When it comes to Skyrim (the game is limited to 30fps), the benefits of the PS4 Pro version are quite tangible here, with improvements in increased foliage draw distance and native 4K performance. However, in rare scenes with a lot of transparency effects, the frame rate may drop slightly compared to the PS4 version.

On a 4K TV the picture difference is quite noticeable, but when it comes to a 1080p screen, the advantages of the Pro console are largely leveled: there is no HDR support, and the increase in resolution turns into improved full-screen anti-aliasing due to scaling. But in Skyrim and on a regular PS4, full-screen anti-aliasing is quite good, so the owner of the console gets only a little more grass draw distance and frame loss in some scenes.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is an interesting game in that regard. Testing the first mission reveals a number of interesting features. The project runs with dynamic framebuffer up to 4K using checkerboard scaling. The cinematic in Prague performs poorly on a regular PS4, but on the Pro version, the frequency increases and frame tearing disappears. However, the first mission of the game is played on PS4 at close to the maximum 30 frames / s, but on the Pro version, the performance sometimes drops to 20 frames / s — no good for a high-end console.

Another interesting example is Rise of the Tomb Raider. The game runs on a regular PS4 at a steady and steady 30fps. The PS4 Pro version offers three enhanced modes to choose from. In 4K, it runs at 30fps, but the smoothness is usually worse, and in rare scenes, there is also a drop in frequency compared to the regular PS4. In the second mode, the game runs with improved graphics at 1080p and 30 fps — the frequency here is not lower than on PS4, but the uniformity is still worse. Finally, in the third mode, Rise of the Tomb Raider runs at 1080p at 60 frames / s — the frequency here, although higher, is too unstable.

The first pancake is always lumpy. Perhaps in the future there will be no situations where the PlayStation 4 Pro performs worse in at least one of the aspects compared to the original system. At least that’s the idea behind the PS4 Pro. I would like Sony to make it mandatory to be able to run PS4 games without any graphical enhancements, but using significantly increased CPU and GPU performance — this will allow players to enjoy the smoothest possible environment if they so desire. The journalists contacted Sony about this and received a short comment: «We are aware of the issue and are currently investigating.»

what they say about Days Gone demo

3DNews Software News Action All the signs of a first-class PS4-exclusive …

The most interesting in the reviews

03/06/2019 [19:23],

Julia Pozdnyakova

Tonight Sony lifted the ban on publishing previews of the post-apocalyptic action game Days Gone from SIE Bend Studio. The PS4-exclusive made a strong impression on journalists: they almost unanimously admitted that the game has every chance to stand on a par with Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and other high-end Sony exclusives. Many are saddened by the end of a spectacular press tour held by the publisher — a few hours of the demo was not enough for them.

GamesRadar staff member Rachael Weber especially liked the restrained style of the game. According to her, this is not «cartoon, caricature survival horror» : it is more like the best films and HBO series. Sam Witwer’s Deacon St. John now looks like «something more than a run-of-the-mill action hero.» The authors seriously worked on the character, and now he looks more like a real person with his own convictions, somewhere capable of showing gentleness and even joking. « You usually have to choose between open world mechanics, good storytelling and good combat, but Bend Studio seems to excel in all three aspects » , she wrote. The journalist believes that Days Gone should be given a chance to everyone who is waiting for The Last of Us: Part II.

Game Informer journalist Jeff Cork (Jeff Cork) noted that from other open-world games Days Gone is primarily distinguished by the bike of the hero. Here it is not just a means of transportation, but a full-fledged partner, whose condition needs to be monitored (refuel, repair, modify). In the few hours of the demo, he didn’t feel like the bike was a burden on the player. Fuel is easy to find — as a rule, it is available at gas stations and in technical assistance vehicles. At the same time, sometimes it is better to walk, because gasoline is consumed quite quickly. Cork also noted that since the last time they saw the action, the developers have significantly improved the management of vehicles: there are «great sense of weight» , and the sounds it makes «simply amazing.»

Another important change that the journalists wrote about concerns the moral choice in story scenes. Now it doesn’t exist at all: the developers realized that such an opportunity interferes with the disclosure of the character of the protagonist and brings almost nothing to the gameplay.

MercuryNews employee Gieson Cacho was surprised at the number of unscripted events in the open world. Having stumbled upon the camp of bandits, he decided to destroy the grouping, and did it unnoticed, sneaking up to each of them, after which he secured the traps. However, the corpses unexpectedly attracted a crowd of phreakers, causing him to leave the camp in a hurry. As a result, the infected destroyed the parking lot and almost killed the hero. This, Kacho says, happens all the time in the game, and these are impromptu situations.

Michel Musters of Gamer.nl marveled at the quality of the cinematic scenes, comparing them to cutscenes in Uncharted and The Last of Us. Moving around the world in the game is a pleasure, and this component, he assures, is done here no worse than in the most popular Sony exclusives.

In a GameSpot review, Edmond Tran and Alessandro Fillari admitted that they were most impressed by the variety of ways to achieve goals. You can get to some place or kill the enemy in different ways — both covertly and openly. In battles, there is always a choice between melee and firearms of different ranges, but they can be combined in different ways.

«Days Gone has all the hallmarks of a high-end PS4 exclusive: cinematic production, likable characters, and beautiful open world design,» says Stephen Lambrechts of Techradar. — At the same time, the plot adheres to the standards of games and films about the zombie apocalypse, and only the biker protagonist distinguishes the action from the many similar ones.

«A powerful story, easy-to-understand survival mechanics, and a constant contrast between the emotionality of some and the bestial brutality of others, spiced with a seasoned road adventure style», — this is how Spaziogames.it employee Matteo Bussani described the virtues of Days Gone.

One of the few journalists who had doubts about the game was John Ryan from IGN. He liked the demo, but he is not sure that it will be able to bring «something revolutionary» to the genre. “The question isn’t whether Days Gone is fun to play (because I already know it is), but whether it’s fun to play 30 hours or more, ,” he explained. My answer is… I hope.

Reviewer Dean Takahashi of VentureBeat was uncomfortably surprised by the long download times (he hoped the creators would fix this issue before release) and the AI issues. He also doubts that the plot of the full version will be sufficiently developed and will be combined with the gameplay exactly as the developers want it to be.

Italian Eurogamer employee Massimiliano di Marco (Massimiliano di Marco) said on Twitter that Days Gone runs at 30 frames / s both on the standard console and on the PlayStation 4 Pro, and in the demo there were no drops in frame rate. On a more powerful model, 4K resolution is available (apparently using a checkerboard scaling method). The duration of the main storyline, according to him, is really about 30 hours, and taking into account secondary quests and activities, you can spend 40-50 hours on the game. He learned this information from the lead developer of the project, John Garvin (John Garvin).

In an interview with VG247, senior animator Emmanuel Roth told VG247 that the development team has grown significantly over the years, from about 50 people working on the game at first to about 135. “We hired talented people from the film industry and other big game studios and they helped us a lot, , he said. — Initially there were only three animators. Now there are ten of them, including the director of animation.»

Below is a video preview and gameplay footage from the demo. Days Gone will release on April 26th.
